- bbqsalad, on 07/31/2008, -2/+68This is actually understandable. These cards are useful for homebrew dev's.. but they do hurt game sales for sure. I personally own a M3 Simply and have pirated games that I would have paid for. It is just too easy to download a rom. Plus I am a bastard. But if it wasn't for these cards I probably wouldn't have ever purchased a DS,
- Khast, on 07/31/2008, -7/+61My advice, if you don't want piracy.... work with the homebrew community, don't lock them out. Keep the homebrew environment under control, and firmware hacks won't be needed for anything but piracy.
I use my PSP 99.9% for homebrew applications, as I didn't find too many games I just had to have. Being able to play Hexaxis was a treat. (Looks as good as a commercial game, and is very challenging.) - sockpuppets, on 07/31/2008, -3/+44I wish I could pirate myself some taco bell right about now.
- Irfit, on 07/31/2008, -1/+39I think the problem isn't exactly with homebrew, but with piracy. Its really easy to install pirate games using the R4.
- meruru, on 07/31/2008, -3/+37A lot of these problems can be side stepped by providing a legal way for people to write their own software. You don't have to open source the whole device, but if you provide an API to people and some avenue to distribute their product then the number of hackers and illegal mods will go down.
- Julik, on 07/31/2008, -1/+24Working with homebrew's will not prevent piracy...
But bringing attention the fact that these cards exist will probably help fuel piracy. - apersaud, on 07/31/2008, -2/+25Sorry to say, but there will always be piracy, as long as anything costs money.

- donshi, on 07/31/2008, -3/+20I own an edge card and it kicks ass.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -2/+19It was manufactured for piracy. If not, then the company wouldn't release updates so that it would be compatible with the latest roms. Not that the R4 team has made an update in forever.
- ibeetle, on 07/31/2008, -0/+17Homebrew and piracy are two different things.
Homebrew can add personalization or functionality to a piece of hardware.
Piracy is just ripping off to save the user money. - Step1Mark, on 07/31/2008, -2/+18I like the way you think Mr SockPuppets
- SpectralSounds, on 07/31/2008, -2/+17I own both an R4 and a CycloDS and I cannot believe how easy it is to pirate games on the DS. I almost feel guilty doing it. Then, I remember that I bought two DSs and a bunch of games (The second DS I bought only because of the CycloDS). Oddly enough, the games I bought for it are the only ones I actually play. The DS has way, way too much shovelware crap on it.
I'll be honest and assure you that I will be downloading the new Dragon Quest rom though. I wouldn't buy another DS game. - Jrr6415sun, on 07/31/2008, -0/+15I am the same way, I was actually planning on buying Zelda, but I just decided $35 was too much.. Zelda makes millions anyways.. and I am a bastard.
I actually did buy all 4 phoenix wright games to support it after trying it on the R4 and loving it... so there are different sides - TotalHalibut, on 07/31/2008, -8/+22Good luck with that, considering it has many legitimate uses and was not manufactured for the purpose of piracy. You might as well start suing CDR manufacturers.
- ibeetle, on 07/31/2008, -1/+14That is pretty much damn near the truth.
Before Apple added and opened the App Store for the iPhone one did not dare even think about buying a iPhone without Jail Breaking it.
Now there is the App Store I bet the number of hacked iPhones have plummeted.
Give the dev kit away, let the developer determine price (even if that price is free), and watch the success. - isntreal, on 07/31/2008, -2/+15Good thing I already have one.
- Julik, on 07/31/2008, -1/+14CDR's are used in multiple interfaces... those chips are used in only a nintendo product. So it is a little different than going after CDR manufacturers.
- silverzone, on 07/31/2008, -0/+11I believe you shouldn't censor yourself.. that's what the "Turn off profanity" button is for.
- inactive, on 07/31/2008, -1/+10Well yeah, thats always the case. Even with the PSP.
There are devices for the DS that enable homebrew and have very bad retail game support, and guess what, those devices don't sell at all. No one uses these for just homebrew. Maybe some people, but I bet that number is so tiny. - chaosblade77, on 07/31/2008, -0/+8Based on what I've read, Nintendo has made no mention of homebrew anywhere in this case, people are just bringing up homebrew because it hurts the homebrew community and makes this look worse than it is. If Nintendo was actually more open to the idea of homebrew then this wouldn't be nearly as big of an issue.
- DanBoodro, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7now i know about flash cards
- firelion, on 07/31/2008, -0/+7I call ***** on "DS carts designed to open the platform to hackers and homebrew applications". I have the r4 and know at of other people who do as well, and while you "can" run homebrew stuff on it the ONLY reason to really have one is for bootlegging games.
- bbqsalad, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6The ONLY game I purchased after pirating it was Hotel Dusk.. because it was that good.
- bwdd, on 07/31/2008, -1/+7They attack as the R4 gets popular.
- evilcaptain, on 07/31/2008, -0/+6The homebrew stuff is better than most commercial games for me.
multiplayer quakeds rocks :) - mnemy, on 07/31/2008, -1/+7If they made the DS that versatile, I doubt as many people would pick up an R4. Having 20-30 games in one cartridge is extremely convenient, as well as being able to load music/videos. The DS games I owned before getting the R4 I tossed, and just restarted them from the beginning. Losing my saves was a small price to pay for the convenience of not having to swap cartridges all the time.
- JoshReflek, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Buried for misleading title.
This is not an issue where nintendo wants to lock out homebew, its strictly about combating piracy.
However, Nintendo does need to provide a homebrew alternative. - Buzzby, on 07/31/2008, -2/+7I wouldn't have bought two Nintendo DS's If i couldn't use my M3 Simply...
- ilistenisee, on 07/31/2008, -4/+9R4 is the reason i bought 2 DS.
gota love em ROMs - inactive, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Because someone pirates a game doesn't mean they would buy it.
Stealing is stealing, I'm not saying pirating is right, but I have downloaded so many games and probably would have bought like 5. - orlyfactor, on 07/31/2008, -1/+6FTA: "everyone is losing money because these carts make piracy such an inviting proposition."
No way, all of the ***** I download I would not buy anyway, and if it weren't for the R4 I would not have bought a DS to begin with. So, in my case, Nintendo made money off of the DS itself and that's that. So, that argument is total *****. - HolyChimp, on 07/31/2008, -0/+5Waiting til it's used doesn't help the dev any more than pirating does. Only GameStop makes the profit on used games, and beside, he already said that he's a bastard.
- skinturtle, on 07/31/2008, -3/+8Now now diggers...watch the hypocrisy. Just a few minutes ago you were all responding to the story about how DIGG was in the right to protect it's IP against Digpicz.com and now here you are saying that Nintendo has crossed the line!
Tsk tsk..
Man ole man..I've never seen the likes of this. What a circus! It's great comedy relief. - inactive, on 07/31/2008, -2/+6Yeah, cause that's close to this.
- MacHarborGuy, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5last time I checked, Canada has an additional tax on CDRs simply due to piracy.
- NerveBand, on 07/31/2008, -4/+8I wouldn't be too sure. look at Sony with the Playstation 3. by opening it up to use Linux on the platfomr, they have effectively warded off those who are digging into ISO loaders and exploits.
At current day, there is not a single backup solution for PS3. - iXneonXi, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5The R4 is horribly out of date anyway, and people in Japan can order online from sites like Dealextreme which have free worldwide shipping. I saw a Supercard DS One SDHC for less than the price of a game and numerous features. Also, if Nintendo provided homebrew software such as moonshell and DSOrganize in the firmware, many people wouldn't even bother. I really enjoy my two DSes with a Supercard and an R4, EZFlash 3 in 1, and a Wii with Homebrew channel. I can't wait till the interoperability between them increases.
- removesstains, on 07/31/2008, -1/+5Doesn't Nintendo realize that there just making more people aware of flash cards by trying to sue the manufactures of flash cards.
- vism, on 08/01/2008, -0/+4@NerveBand: PS3 is also so complex that even developers are having trouble figuring it out. Give it a few years, something will show up. Also the cost of Blu-ray discs also make it not feasible, although there's always loading to hard drive.
- reechme, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4It's not ALWAYS about pirated games - but because there are many posts already about people saying 'yup, I use 'em to pirate' it kind of proves a point.
Who wants to play crappy half-baked demos on their DS? No, people want free games, hence why Nintendo are going after the R4 makers. It's used for piracy as well as homebrew, more people will use it for piracy than homebrew! - jonshipman, on 07/31/2008, -0/+4I just weened my mom off the "Copying DVDs" habit. Why? I just graduated college last year. It was irritating calling up to say hi only to get "Why doesn't Pirates 3 copy?"
Whenever I was over I always had to update her ripper just so she could get past the latest protection. - LocalDocal, on 07/31/2008, -2/+5Yes, it makes sense to work with the console that has 'yet to be hacked' (although this is false; there are already modchips/hacks for the PS3). However, what makes even more sense is developing for consoles where your games will sell more. The companies believe they can sell more on the Wii/360, so they develop there.
- HeyArnold, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4do you remember when nintendo went after rom sites years ago? and its only NOW that they are making money on software created 20 years ago?? Point is that instead of going after these guys, and ultimately leaving no legal method of creating content for their consoles, why not release a dev platform?? *****, its already been made, they can just hire the guys/gals who put it together, and surprise! SELL IT! Nintendo needs to pull their head out of their ass and listen to what the people want. Its not always about pirated games.
- Travelsonic, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3"Stealing is stealing"
And water is water, what's your point? Copying != stealing != rape.
Morally reprehensible? yes, but ignorance is bliss when comparing apples to oranges I guess. - twigboy, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3as with most platforms, i pirate to try and if i like it, i buy it
i have a stack of legitimate games ive never opened, just because i like them
as for that, there are ALOT of shovelware games on ds and wii that i have downloaded and it even feels like a waste of bandwidth and time to even try it.
ensure some sort of quality in the games and people will be more likely to spend on games rather than test the waters first. - CCUboogernjit, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4WOW just WOW!
- centran, on 07/31/2008, -0/+3Oh come on.. you aren't a bastard. You are a honest bastard!
- Jrr6415sun, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4Who am I to decide $35 is too much? um well I make decisions for myself so I can easily decide that $35 is too much for me. $35 is a lot of money when I can get it for free.I wasn't using $35 or it making millions as an excuse to get you to like me or to convince myself that it was reasonable.. i don't really care
$35 is a lot more than free, so you're right I took choice #1 and didn't buy the game, just downloaded it.
And yes if it makes millions I would rather use my money to support good games that noone buys. - FolkTheory, on 07/31/2008, -1/+4"New R4 shipment has finally arrived! You know what it does! Absolutely no questions will be answered concerning this product..."
love it -
