- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+84Am I the only one who doesn't care for USB Harddrives yet?
My Wii came with a SD card slot. Utilitize it, Nintendo!!! Let one of your big secrets be a firmware update that allows channels to be run off of the card!
Also, *ALL* my channels are filled up. You listening, Nintendo?? I have 400 blocks of internal memory left and I *WANT* to give you more of my hard earned money but everytime I go to the Shop Channel they want me free up channels before buying more. I am not going to play a copy/paste game with my Wii. I need more channels and I need them grouped together by console so my freakn' Wii doesn't take 10-15 seconds of pure dead silence with a black screen everytime I enter the main screen. It's messy, cluttered, and increases my system's load times. All because I pulled out my credit card and punped money into your bank accounts. - traviscaruth, on 10/11/2007, -7/+85:(
- madaznboi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+38Well from the CVG interview:
Is Nintendo considering releasing a hard drive to bolster the Wii's memory for all this new content?
Nintendo: No.
Well there is a chance Nintendo is not releasing a hard drive and opens the usb ports to third party solutions. *crosses fingers* - doshindude, on 10/11/2007, -3/+31when they said that, I'm assuming they just meant for now. Now if they meant that they're just not making one ever, then I'd be going "ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???"
- DatoeDakari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23Do you own a Wii? First off you have to transfer the game to the SD card, then delete it from the internal memory, if you need more space; then if you actually wanna play it you have to transfer it back to the memory, but not before transferring and deleting something else if the IntMem happens to be full, now let me ask you...who the ***** wants to do that? Not coming out with an HDD is a mistake if they plan on continuing VC and Wiiware releases.
- meepzork, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22dont get me wrong, i love my wii.... but im getting pretty annoyed at this. I have maybe 4 channel slots left open (i like the VC... ALOT) and transferring to and from the SD card is a huge pain in the ass. I have the usb ethernet adapter, and its actually faster to just delete the channel and re-download it when I want it back.
According to the wii, i have PLENTY of space (blocks) left for storage. They need to send out an update that adds a few more pages of channels, or even better yet they could reorganize the whole thing in a tree structure by console... - kingofthisnight, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I have a crazy idea for Nintendo. They should utilize the Everybody Votes Channel for something other than, "Do you brush your teeth in a clockwise motion or counterclockwise motion?" Maybe they could ask questions such as "Would you want a hard drive attachment to store all your VC games?" or "What classic Nintendo games would you liked to see turned into brand new Wii titles?"
I think having a hard drive would be a great addition to the system. I have yet to fill up the internal memory but I know someday in the future it will happen. To be quite honest I am not going to rule out the possibility of there being a different storage medium to put VC titles, WiiWare, and game demos onto. - charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19With 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB SD cards.
- AhrenBa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14God, what the hell Nintendo? Do you really want to risk ruining the success you have had with the Wii so far? Listen to the customers for once....just once would be nice.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14I laugh at all the people who were saying "OH MAI GAWD I LUV U NINTENDO! U ALWAYS HELP THE CONSUMER!" back when Digg had articles about a rumored harddrive
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Im going to assume that a future system update will allow you to save VC games and channels on an SD cards.
- plhearn, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I've been playing resident evil 4: wii edition and I can verify that its 10x more fun with the wiimote than with the gamecube and ps2 controller.
- joelmole, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11I'm fine if they just keep SD, if they update the firmware on the Wii to allow reading from and writing to the SD card directly, rather than having to use to storage management interface.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Actually, I see this as a good thing.
Because im hoping (as unlikely as it is) that they will just add USB mass storage support. Id much rather buy my own 4gig flashdrive for $30 or external 500 gig for $150 than pay $100 for an "official" 20gig drive from Nintendo.
And no im not trying to single out the 360, im just saying any official drive for any system will be massively overpriced for the amount of storage it has because that would make it your only option. - latca, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10They should also allow the games and channels to actually run off the SD cards.
- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9You can already do so, but you have to manually transfer it. It would be nice if you could choose the storage medium before you download the game and/or channel.
- halleyscomet, on 10/11/2007, -10/+18No, you're the only one pissed off about the controller.
Well, you and the Sony executives who were beaten to the punch.
A quick note: Calling it "Gimmicky" won't magically convince Wii owners that there's something wrong with it, or dissuade people form buying it. It just makes you look like a sad, pathetic fanboy lashing out at the fact that PS3 systems are sitting on the shelves collecting dust while Nintendo is selling Wiis as fast as they can make them. - sephiroth965, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9You could just digg him up...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8That's cause the 64DD was proprietary and junk. A standard USB hard drive would be cheap and no development costs needed. It's a no-brainer.
- Mearn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Nintendo never bought Sega. Sega just went out of the hardware business.
- sephiroth965, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They should really just make the wii compatible with usb storage devices and make it so we can play games directly off a usb hard drive.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10This is what they originally said from the beginning, that the Wii would support any USB media storage device. I was actually surprised and pissed when I got mine home and it didn't already.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Hear! Hear!
- MCHampster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Exactly. The issue is not having enough physical storage space. The issue is not actually being able to utilize the SD card slot to play games from and save state to. Instead, you have to play a game of copying and pasting between it and the internal memory. If they had a firmware update that made the SD card a first-class memory citizen for the Wii, this probably would be mostly solved.
- pr1me4, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8i'm still waiting for earthbound 64!
- plhearn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Don't be silly. You can already pirate any VC game easily with an emulator. No one is going to try and get a VC game off the wii's memory and pirate it when you can just download it for free off the internet. And your idea probably couldn't be patented plus Valve already uses that idea.
- teeker95, on 10/11/2007, -9/+15What, you didn't realize these things when you bought it? If those are your priorities in a game console, then you are not the Wii's target demographic. You wanted a 360. You can't blame Nintendo for that.
- gibson424, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6you mean to tell me that the kings of add-on accessories (second only to sega) will not make one that's borderline necessary?? give me a break
- boberto, on 10/11/2007, -9/+14We should be happy they are giving us CHOICE in how much storage space we need. You can go out and find a great deal on a large SD card and spend a lot less than you would on some overpriced first party hardware.
- opnickc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6How many of you have actually filled up the included space? Do you really need every VC game on the console main screen all the time? Is it that hard to put some on an SD card, or delete them and redownload them (which Nintendo lets you do)?
This is a non-issue, I don't understand why everybody is so up in arms about it.
That's why Nintendo isn't doing anything about it - it's not a problem in the first place! - EvolvedAnt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Digg is not a contest to see how many stories you can submit that make it to the front page, so stop acting like you just got cheated somehow. With hundreds of thousands of viewers, any important news is bound to be reported by multiple people, it is all in the article title that determines which one gets digged to the front page after that.
- Emmo213, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5NAND flash can handle ~1,000,000 cycles. Don't know where you got several hundred from. And yes, I'd like to be able to actually use my SD card!
- BigFloppy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11I think you'll find you are the 'sad, pathetic fanboy', as he made no mention of Sony or the PS3 whatsoever, and yet you had to make the assumption that his comment was in any way related to either. What i find even _more_ hilarious is how vehemently you defend Nintendo when they couldn't give two ***** about you as an individual, just like Sony or Microsoft. In fact, they probably give even less of a ***** about you because they're not relying on future income from you through games, as they didn't make a loss on their console in the first place, unlike Sony and Microsoft who actually need to keep their user-base. It makes no difference to me, i don't own any of these 'next-gen' consoles. I just find it slightly deranged/disturbing how much loyalty people have for these brands.
But don't let me hurt your feelings. Nintendo loves you. - dunlop, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I just got my Wii so I've learned something new (not being able to play games from SD).
that said, I really don't understand the allure of the VC. Are these just exact replica's of the NES/SNES/N64 games? 99% of these are all over the web for emulation, I imagine the original Super Mario Bros will look kinda crappy on a 60" plasma widescreen... I thought they were enhanced in some way but when I look at reviews they do not seem to be changed like some games are for XBLA.
Also if they are exact replicas, I would imagine 512MB can hold a LOT of stuff so it might not be that big of a deal to have to copy/paste something.
Please don't interpret this as me bashing the Wii, I'm underwhelmed by it so far (I only have Zelda and Wii sports, the no Wired LAN option was also a surprise) but will wait till I have given it a chance before I give a final opinion on it. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Maybe you should try doing some actual, you know, research before blindly buying a product then, instead of complaining about it after the fact. You know, like reading game reviews? Looking at screenshots? Bothering to read ANYTHING about Nintendo industry news? That sort of crazy stuff.
If you want a computer... I'm sorry, "game console" that demands you to attach a hard drive, go get a 360 or something and enjoy shelling out more money. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes nintendo stooped to very dodgey tatics.
They never officially promised online games, usb support etc they just sat back and allowed 3rd parties to hype the console then did nothing to disapate the myths. I know many people who were annoyed on the wiis day of release to go home and find u cant play wii sports online etc. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -7/+10Oops, Nintendo's being stubborn again. Nothing new there... Although this time, I don't even see why. Usually, I can at least understand why Nintendo backs up its boneheaded mistakes, but I can't see what they gain by not developing a hard drive. Any theories?
- morningblur, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Here is a link to that interview: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=14271
Source: http://kotaku.com/gaming/there-are-no-tanks%27%27%27/nintendo-uk-on-wii-hdd-no-dice-273003.php - triplehelix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3sphiroth is actually correct in theory, just not in the actual number of cycles. flash memory has a much much smaller useful life when counted in read/write cycles, then a hdd. the difference between storing pics and running software, again when counted in read/write cycles, is huge.
- kravex, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Same as what I said above, it's needs to be 3rd party, if they did an official one how long would it take them to make and ship 8 million?
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3But they aren't allowing ANY drive right now.
- allisonaxe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3no hard drive? then they better allow people to start playing things off of SD cards quickly, i'm running out of space!
- MrObjectional, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Have you ever heard such a firm denial? The last time I heard such a straightforward answer from Nintendo was when they were denying the existence of a remodeled DS (a few weeks later, the DS Lite was announced). I wouldn't sweat this too much.
- DatoeDakari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ok, I kinda see your point, they only have a set # of channels, so i guess they weren't planning on people having massive amounts of games on the actual system, it would be nice though if they released firmware that would allow more channels and HDD support, but thats probably not going to happen. Is anyone working on a firmware hack? haha
- stregone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Its great because it is a LEGAL way to do it.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2When did they ever say that? As far as I recall, people just speculated that you could because no other use for the USB ports has been announced yet. I do not know of any official Nintendo announcement where they ever promised that the Wii would support any USB storage device.
- VeganG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Hard drives can increase the performance of disc-based games, allowing them to do things that they couldn't before. Blindly saying that you don't want pesky hard drives in your consoles is like saying you don't want more of "that damned annoying RAM" in your consoles.
- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The N64 wasn't a complete mistake.. sure the prices were higher, but going to the Playstation at friends houses i was always really pissed off having to wait for games to load.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2i read a while back on ign that the wii doesn't support over 2 gb...i could be wrong but buyer beware...
- dunlop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2While I mentioned above that I am underwhelmed by the games, physically the Wii is very well put together.
I'm not sure how you think they could get rid of the sensor bar, that is needed to track how the WiiMote/Numchuck is moving. Short of building it into the Wii and forcing you to put the Wii on your TV, it's just not going to happen -
