Nintendo announces 4.7 million Virtual Console games sold, Mario rules Top5
arstechnica.com — The Wii is a sales monster, but Nintendo has just announced that sales of Virtual Console games are just as brisk. At 1,000 games sold an hour and Mario ruling the top five most popular games, Nintendo is practically printing money for itself.

I got the anniversary collection for the Game Cube a while back and was so freaking excited about it. But then I played it. The fire and jump button were backwards. I thought I could get over this, but it was too much. I had to return the game and pick up the PS2 version with the correct controller configuration. Because of this unforgivable blunder on the Game Cube version of the game that means no Mega Man on the Wii.
Luckily I got the Zelda disc that was packaged with Game Cubes, so I am all good playing Majora's Mask and all the other Zelda games on the Wii.

I agree! Super Dodge Ball was beyond awesome. - AntBing, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I couldn't resist the original Zelda, Excitebike and Punch-out. They got me for 3 so far, and there are a few more I'm close to grabbing. The VC is the best part about my Wii these days.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Super Dodge Ball! Man, I played that game non stop as a kid. I didn't think anyone else even knew about it's existance. I wish there was an SNES sequel or something to it, the GBA one wasn't really that great.
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36Give me Super Metroid or give me death.
- Toupee, on 10/11/2007, -13/+6They ***** up the controls for Super Nintendo games with the Virtual Console when you're using a Gamecube controller if you ask me. In Super Mario World, you should be able to hold the run button with the tip of your thumb and tap the jump button by rolling it back without letting go of run. It's been like that in every Mario game! But then with the Gamecube controller run is the top bean button, a normal jump is the little B button, and the rarely used spin-jump is on the big A button. What the hell? I have to lay my pointer finger across the top bean and use my thumb to jump.
Ignoring the fact for a second that I can't justify paying for a single game as I've had the entire romsets for these consoles for nearly a decade (and digg users, c'mon here: who hasn't?), with all the perks of save-states and NETPLAY ... having an unconfigurable, remarkably bad control scheme is the real nail in the coffin. And who is really getting my money anyway? Any of the original developers? Or just Nintendo as a corporation?
Obviously no one cares since they've sold 5 million roms already, but I refuse to buy any on principle. Don't get me wrong, I love the Wii, but I can't support the Virtual Console. If I'm going to pay for games that are over ten years old, they're going to have to beat the going yard-sale rate. Which is about a dollar a game. And that gets you a nice tangible cartridge, too. - noots, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15goldeneye.

Speaking of SPM, they should release a channel that checks to see if you have SPM in the drive, then loads a traditional platformer engine in the mindset of the old school mario games and just uses the graphics/music and such from the disc. No flipping into 3d, no RPG elements, just good old 2player mario action with a small download file.

Oh, and that's a completely reasonable standpoint, seeing as everybody in the world played the exact same games as you did in the 1980s, not to mention still own working consoles and cartridges.
It's just so HORRIBLE of Nintendo to make their older games avaliable and playable again. I can see why this would cut you deeply.

- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -19/+5I ***** doubt Nintendo is "decimating" Microsoft and Sony in terms of online sells, and online play.
- PhantomRogue, on 10/11/2007, -20/+3Yeah, because they sell your old games back to you.
Nintendo is laughed at for not being AHEAD of the times, not for doing something well. I dont think there is anyone in the world who thought the VC wouldnt do well. The VC alone is why some people bought a Wii. This article comes as no surprise. But the Wii still doesnt have Online capability, which will only hurt its future sales of NEW games. Look at the PS3 and 360s best games, all online, the Wii's best selling games are N64 and NES Games! - Raian, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9@mywhitenoise
Your doubts are ill founded -- Nintendo is trouncing both Sony and Microsoft in terms of online sales, and when you look at the Nintendo DS, online game-play as well. - airwalkery2k, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9And to think. My Sony friend and my Microsoft friend laughed at me when I said I'd prefer a Wii over their systems during one of their fanboy debates.

oooh, a whole 2 games on their console that has been out for 7 months.
- neiltc13, on 10/11/2007, -11/+3I always think that people are pretty silly for buying into this. Sure, one or two classics isn't gonna harm you but I've seen people with ten or twenty games lined up on their Wii. To them, I ask if they bought the game because they wanted to play that game or whether they bought it either because of the novelty of playing it on Wii or because they feel they need to because Wii has so few AAA full retail titles.
Either way I wouldn't buy a single VC game myself.- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13For me, it's an issue of convience. I don't want to have an NES, SNES, N64, GENESIS, etc. all hooked up to my TV just so that I can play whatever game I want at the time. This way, I can pay a small fee to have it consolidated on my Wii. (Obviously, I wouldn't buy every game I own for the VC. But, I also don't play every game I own with any regularity. The ones that I do play more often can be bumped up to Wii status, if Nintendo has released it already.)
I say, if you don't mind spending the money, then there's no problem. And, I don't mind spending the money. - djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2"I don't want to have an NES, SNES, N64, GENESIS, etc. all hooked up to my TV just so that I can play whatever game I want at the time."

1 wii title == $5.00

The original, Master Quest, Collector's Edition, and the VC one. I know it's stupid, but I'm fine with "paying for the same thing twice". I want to do it. Nintendo isn't forcing me.

- EndangeredMassa, on 10/11/2007, -8/+0Mario may rule the top 5, but it' an odd statement. I would say that Mario dominates the top 4, not the top 5.
If the top 10 includes 6 Mario games, would you say that the top 10 is ruled by Mario? I realize that this is just an issue of semantics more than anything else, but it still bugs me a little.
It's cool to see that the Virtual Console is doing so well. That virtually (haha) guarantees that Nintendo will continue to crank out (old) games for it, which is awesome.- daRoach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5If 6 of the top 10 games were Mario games you would say that the top 10 is ruled by Mario. He would be contained in more than half the list, thusly outweighing all others.

My dream: Earthbound 2 (Mother 3) on VC.- gardnmi, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1Actually every game is $10 because thats how many points you have to buy. When is this point BS going to stop and I can just pay exact prices.
- heresy_fnord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1$7.25 on average actually. :)
That means they could be making $34,075,000.
Even if they just sold $5 games, they would still be making over $23,000,000
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6These games are ridiculously overpriced. Virtual console was one of my most anticipated features about the Wii when it was originally announced. I dreamt of building a collection of classics some just for Nostalgias sake. Reggie pounded his chest at how great it would be. Then Nintendo decided to gouge us for them. Oh well good for Nintendo I guess, the one thing they do really well is make profits.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Obviously other gamers disagree about them being ridiculously overpriced, to the tune of about...uh..4.7 million games or so. :p
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I know. It's scary. So much for my protest against Virtual console prices.
- jgerry, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5I agree, they're too expensive. I've spent $15 so far on Mario Kart 64 and Donkey Kong Jr. They're fun and nostalgic, but you can only get so much enjoyment out of this old stuff.
If the games were priced at $1, $2, $3, $5 max, I think they'd sell 2-3 times more. But I think they don't want to sell more because they're afraid that people will stock up on VC games and not buy the actual Wii games. - loup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I did buy both legend of zelda on super mario bros. off VC, mostly to see how well they worked, but that's as far as I plan to go for quite some time. I kind of think they should cut the price point in half on the games. If I could get original NES games for $2-3 and N64 games for $5-6, I would probably buy quite a few, but at $5 for NES and $10 for N64 and the rest priced between that, it doesn't outweigh the inconvenience of setting up my old systems.
- KJSatz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2You actually think they priced them HIGHER for the sole purpose of people buying FEWER because of some weird conspiracy that they don't want people to buy TOO MANY games?
Whatever....
- ickingfudiot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5You know what's sad (but impressive at the same time)? My friends and I bought Mario Kart 64 on an impulse for virtual console a few months ago, and we play that more than any other Wii game (or other console game besides Guitar Hero) combined. By a massive amount.
I'd forgotten how solid of a multiplayer game it was.- frygar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Now if they'd just hurry it up and release the original Super Mario Kart, everything would be just dandy. (BTW, I totally agree with you on SMK64 being the penultimate multiplayer game ever. It is, and it is still as fun today as it was back then.)
- ickingfudiot, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Which just makes Mario Kart Double Dash even more disappointing, sadly. Here's hoping a Wii Mario Kart will a) not suck and b) not overuse the motion sensitivity.

- kanimara, on 10/11/2007, -19/+4This is almost entirely because there are no actual games to play on the Wii, all it has is the virtual consol Smart move by Nintendo definitely, maybe they're even purposefully not caring about 3rd party support or releasing a steady stream of good games because they can milk everyone through the Virtual Console. Definitely an interesting tactic.

1. There are lots of GOOD FUN games to play on the Wii. Not just multiplayer party games as lots of people say(they hatin').

3. I have never ONCE seen an advertisement for VC games. Not ***** once. - kanimara, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2And how long do those "fun" games last?

Wow you have completely changed my mind about the Wii.... Thank you.
Now I see the light. It has the best games ever made, and that will ever be made

No one cares whether or not you buy or don't buy VC games-- I'm sure Nintendo doesn't care much either, especially after seeing the sales figures.
Finally, no one cares whether you have a preference in terms of video game companies or consoles either.
That's my two cents. - loneraven, on 10/11/2007, -6/+5Since I have no moral problems with emulating nearly 20 year old games (nes games) and games I already own (snes and n64 games), I can't see myself ever purchasing a game off of VC.
My xbox is great at emulation, and if that fails, I currently have my hdtv plugged into my pc as a second monitor, and my 360 controller makes an excellent gamepad. - ripple01, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2You can find all of these games available to play on your PC on the Internet if you know where to look...

With the replay factor and fun times with the family (you gotta love those "when I was your age, this was my favorite game" moments) how could you not like it?. They're $5-10! You're complaining about price-gouging, when you shelled out $250 for the console, and $50 a game. In my opinion, most of the games available for download are better than the new ones coming out for $50 anyways.
- Snowy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@Zamfir
@PhantomRogue
@djsyndrome
And sooo many others
I don't know about you guys, but when I was growing up I didn't have that much money to drop on all the popular games as they came out. I bought a couple games for each system and if I was lucky my parents bought a couple more. Most of the games I have bought on the VC aren't games that I am "paying for twice", most of them this is the first exposure to them and I am glad that Nintendo allowed me the opportunity to experience them for a few bucks. As for the ones I did own it is a paltry sum I have to pay for the convenience of having my games all on one (working) system.
As for everyone else always complaining that the VC is too expensive: you can buy about 10 games on the VC (depending on what you get) for the price of 1 new game. I don't think that is too expensive.
Also I play games on my TV with my game controllers. Not on my computer. Downloading roms just isn't anywhere near the same.- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I agree. I hooked my laptop via Svideo to my TV and used that logitech gamepade that mimicks the SP2 dualshock and it still didn't feel the same. I love the classic controller, can't use anythign else.
- djSyndrome, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4If you have the working system and the original cartridge (or HuCard), buying the same game on the VC does nothing except trade space and an A/V connection on your TV for cash. I sold my Wii because after four months I realized that there were very few games coming out that I was interested in, and the $100 I spent on the VC were on games I already owned and had packed away in my garage. Also, I never found the CC a good fit for Genesis or TG-16 games, although it worked well enough for the NES and SNES ones.
Downloading ROMS is another matter entirely, and something I personally don't agree with.
- RAiNsTorm, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0Emu FTW!
Sorry but I've bought these games already, and like to play them on the go now that I'm not 12 anymore.
Oh, and @snowy
Wireless gamepads on a HTPC makes it even better than the original since you can save states and play multiplayer, etc. No one said you have to sit at a desk with a keyboard mapped and on a 17" monitor... but since you can't that must mean the rest of us are missing out one something great. - dqderrick, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4WANTED: Strider (Genesis)

- viserov, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Goldeneye!
- pasher1221, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Great 4 player game on VC = BOMBERMAN... Try it!
- MCHampster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You can get up to 5- player if you use a GameCube controller. See the VC instructions for the game.
- brian1625, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nintendo World Cup Soccer!
- Canadianinjapan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'd like to see some more 64 games sometime this year......
- brian1625, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd imagine this helps Nintendo with NEW console sells as well as it would be making people more reluctant to sell their Wiis to used dealers seeing as their VC titles are etched into system.
- greenmky, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I wait for games to come out on the VC and sell off my old carts.
Part of it is video quality - NES over composite video looks pretty icky on a projector and even on my 37" for that matter. S-video is much better at least for the consoles that support it like the SNES.
Also, wired controllers + projector are a pain, especially with a couple of cats and a 17month old in the mix. Don't get me wrong, I've been playing Chrono Trigger on my SNES, but I'd rather play it on the VC with a wireless Classic controller.
And yes, I have a HTPC project that's been in the works for a few years but it's hassle and annoyance to get different controllers working on all the emulators and to hide the PC interface, and it's morally questionable and illegal anyway. I'll probably go that route someday for a standup MAME cabinet, but it's too much bother for just kicking back and playing an occasional 8-bit or 16-bit game. - seraph82, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Wii owner talking here:
THE ONLY REASON THEY'VE SOLD SO MANY VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES IS BECAUSE THERE'S ***** FOR SELECTION FOR ACTUAL WII GAMES. HELLOOOOO, NINTENDO! 7.5 MILLION WII'S SOLD AND WE'RE WAITING FOR ***** CONTENT!
cyclowiz ftw. Never paying ***** for old video games I already bought back in the day. ***** THAT. - MadMastaZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1At least zelda made 5th.....
- dekoboko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1how about:
Baseball Star and just for kicks StarCraft 64! - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Any idea how this stacks up to the 360 marketplace sales?
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1bpapa, you've got to believe that if/when the 360 Marketplace gets better sales than this, Major Nelson won't hesitate to blog about it :p
- MewTwo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4It's impossible to comment on these types of submissions because there are too many die-hard Nintendo fans on Digg (telling you to "***** off" or digg you down when you say something that's true).
When are you going to open your eyes and see how lame the Wii is...- felyduw, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3The question here is when are you going to shut up and stop being immature.
You dislike the Wii, fine, now just explain me what's the point in saying that in a web forum regarding an article about Nintendo's sales?
Do you believe I would stop playing Mario Strikers or 1080 (for the GC) a bit every day just because you said that the Wii was lame? What's your point?

- abc789987, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2TECMO SUPER BOWL was the best game ever...
ahhhh I miss my Nintendo... - sputt87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1These games cost them nothing to offer, you pay for the emulators with the Wii purchase. Now how about subsidizing the console cost! Think of how many consoles they could sell if it were offered at a more reasonable price. I know I'm not alone in thinking $200 is too much for such hardware.
- uppedbyhiggins, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Buy Golden Axe and prepare to laugh for a while.
Also, save up your magic until boss fights. - LastNYCHero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The Wii is pretty damn dope. I have no games for it yet since I am skeptical of the gameplay for some games like a basketball game for instance. I really want to get a mod chip for it so I can DL games and burn em to see if a game is worth it you know. I don't mind paying for a game I will use a lot like I did with the Gamecube's Live 2006 or whatever it was. Personally I can't wait for the new Star Wars game with the light saber fighting action with the wii controller. That ***** should be off the hook. I heard about it here:

Peace Diggers - xenonline, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0what nobody understands is that the game on the original console is the best, no matter how many VCs are released.
