- Hellothere123, on 02/29/2008, -8/+58It's because of brawl.
- redline6800, on 02/29/2008, -9/+58This is news?
- AdonalFoyle, on 02/29/2008, -15/+59Sony giving up in Japan is like Microsoft giving up in the U.S.
- MadceltUK, on 02/29/2008, -5/+34More accurate headline....
WII OUTSELLS XBOX360 by 23.5 to 1
But who really gives a crap about this anyway - cthellis, on 02/29/2008, -15/+34What, with Wii Fit and Smash Brothers Brawl out? NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next you'll be telling me that Metal Gear Solid IV or Final Fantasy XIII might move some consoles!
(Also amusingly, the Wii and PS3 are both getting consistently mumped by both portables. Japan seems to be moving in that direction in general, and concerning itself less with the livingroom ones.) - jgtg32a, on 02/29/2008, -1/+16Livingrooms in Japan?
- latova, on 02/29/2008, -3/+14If all people wanted was pretty graphics from games then they'd all own PCs.
You can call it what you want, a gimmik, console for grandmas, etc, but Nintendo is laughing at you all the way back to the bank. - barandon0D9, on 02/29/2008, -4/+14Well, if by 4 you actually mean 2, then yes!
- Obsession88, on 02/29/2008, -13/+23People still give a ***** about numbers??
- sirbeta, on 02/29/2008, -5/+14I had no idea that PS3's were going for ~$1000
- Mayday, on 02/29/2008, -8/+17Better question. Are 360 and ps3 fanboys so insecure that they need to attack the wii anytime they can. I love the true gamers don't play wii attitude. Show me what a 360 and ps3 can do that I can't do on a computer. When did graphics become the most important aspect of gaming? Actually research the wiimote hardware. C# has a great library for the wiimote. Start righting some code for that bad boy and then we should talk about next generation. They haven't even tapped the surface of the full potential of the wiimote.
- NinjaJoey, on 02/29/2008, -4/+13I guess if by "going down" you mean "outselling all competitors consistently" then you're absolutely correct.
- xTRUMANx, on 02/29/2008, -2/+10Exactly what I was thinking. How about an article confirming that Carlos Slim is still the richest man in the world.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/29/2008, -3/+11Reggie? You're comparing Reggie (a PR guy) to game and hardware engineers?
- KingGoonie, on 02/29/2008, -6/+13Big... are you serious!?!?!!? Or is this your first day on digg? PS3 almost outsells wii in the worst month for sales, and its all over digg... so it goes both ways.
- tehrich, on 02/29/2008, -3/+10I think I liked video games better when I was young and ignorant of the business world. I bought games cause they were fun and didn't give a crap about who was outselling who.
- barandon0D9, on 02/29/2008, -4/+11Sony has given up in Japan? Since when? PS2 was HUGE in Japan, the PSP is selling strongly and the PS3 is improving. And what about Sony is focusing on mostly FPS games? I only own one FPS for my PS3 (COD4) and its not made by Sony. At any rate, I think Metal Gear Solid 4 and the FFXIII games will help Sony sell plenty of consoles in Japan.
- canthraxp, on 02/29/2008, -2/+9Breaking: 4 persons fail to use the "Breaking" joke. It's unsure if this number will increase, more at 11pm.
- Harbinger67, on 02/29/2008, -1/+8Or buy one in June for the MGS4/DS3 pack, like a ***** of other people are going to do.
- zioxide, on 02/29/2008, -1/+7They're pretty much "current-gen" now.
- CyberKyle, on 02/29/2008, -3/+8This Just In....
NINTENDO SPENDS MONEY ON MARKETING... MAKES PROFIT! - inactive, on 02/29/2008, -3/+8The PS3 is also outselling the 360 by 5:1 in Japan. (The Wii is outselling the 360 by 24:1). Besides, I don't really consider the Wii to be in direct competition with the other two consoles, I have a PS3 and a Wii and they really serve different purposes. Sure, they both play games, but the games on the PS3 wouldn't really work well on the Wii, and the Wii games wouldn't really work well on the PS3. It's almost like comparing the Nintendo DS to the PS3.
- staticneuron, on 02/29/2008, -1/+5Why is it wii and ps3 instead of wii vs 360 or PS3 vs 360?
- virtualball, on 02/29/2008, -3/+7People are probably more apt to pay $100-$150 for a system then $400.
Just saying. - Destinatus, on 02/29/2008, -0/+4you're going with the amazing even though you haven't played it? I've played it and it really is pretty much the same thing as Melee. There's no need for blind brand loyalty here.
- Stevethegreat, on 02/29/2008, -3/+6The people buy the Nintendo Wii for Wii sports, period.
W/t the WiiSports there would be no "Wii success", apart from Mario Galaxy there's hardly any good or innovative game that the other consoles can't do better. Nintendo Wii is the very definition why not always the best or more innovative wins in an open market, in fact it's always the best marketed the one which wins if it also happens to be good at what it's doing is irrelevant. Wii takes gaming back to 2000 and presents it as next-gen, that's quite of an achievement. If Okami (a title of the old-gen) is big news it says everything about how "next-gen" the console is. If those points are not enough, then what more do you want? I have also to add that the Nintendo Wii is the only console I own and now I think that PS2 was better deal.
Whatever the deal I think all consoles are sham, there could very well be one which would be able to play all present and past games and supporting all kinds of controllers..... - dandonia, on 03/01/2008, -0/+3Go play Sky Dive for the PS3 or Super Rub Dub or even Lair - sure these games arnt getting great reviews but I have played the first two and they are far better than the reviews make out. Also Uncharted showed that Motion control used sparsly could be cool, like walking across the logs and throwing grenades.
Lets not forget the PS3's Eye games like that tank game which looks cool and pretty inovative.
Im not trying to ***** on the Wii as I think it is pretty sweet but lets not say the other companys are doing nothing to move consoles along. XBL Media Downloads, PS3 Bluray Media, PS3 internet access, both PS3 and 360 have great online facility's and PS3's about to get HOME which looks amazing. - KMartSheriff, on 02/29/2008, -5/+8My friend and I have walked through BlockBuster many times looking for a good Wii game and it's impossible to find something actually interesting. Also, and I'm sure I'll get dugg down for this, but that Mario crap is getting old. I don't care if Mario is playing soccer/golf/whatever. Come up with a fresh idea for once.
- stereoa, on 02/29/2008, -2/+5In related news, Wii developers outdevelop hardcore games with casual ones 100 to 1.
- Juntistik, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3All fanboys care about numbers and skew them in the way to promote their side.
Wii: We have the most sold!
360: We have the best attach rates!
PS3: We sold more then 360 in [insert date here]! - Protoss, on 02/29/2008, -4/+7Didn't people say that when it first came out? And here we are a year and a half later, with the Wii barely staying on store shelves still. I don't see the Wii as a fad, but it might fall back into 2nd place. The Wii is targeting a market that no other console has tapped, the non-gamer. My mom is thinking about buying a Wii because she loved Wii Sports so much, along with the rest of my family.
- TheG2, on 02/29/2008, -2/+5What the hell were you trying to say?
- Madgoldfish, on 02/29/2008, -3/+6That captain obvious submits a lot of stories.
- MrTito, on 02/29/2008, -1/+4Uh... I don't know what point you're trying to make here. The Wii is a niche product because of Wii Sports? Wii Sports is the most successful game of all time? No other Wii games sell because no one owns any other games, and no other games take advantage of the Wiimote?
I'm confused by what you're saying. All I know is that everyone I know who owns a Wii has more than one game. I mean, other games are selling. There's data out there. And more than one game that takes advantage of the Wiimote, at that. Hell, I bought one of my nieces a Spyro the Dragon game for Christmas and watched her play it on Christmas Eve and it definitely took advantage of the Wiimote's abilities. Maybe it could be said that the Wii is more limited to less complex games, or kids games, whatever. But otherwise (if that was even a point of yours), you're not really accounting for reality. - Protoss, on 02/29/2008, -5/+8Did you read what he said? The Wii is innovating in the sense that the games have a whole different level of interactivity now.
- zeebo, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2There are more than three types of televisions. There's ATSC, NTSC, PAL, SECAM, and QAM, and signals that can be tuned in and understood by one might not be understood by another. This incompatibility problem is nothing new.
Yes it would be great if everybody could agree on a single standard platform, but its not going to happen in the video game industry anytime soon. Hardware still divides the industry, as does development environments and APIs. You can't simply make a single box that would play Wii, PS3 and Xbox360 games, it would have to be a concerted effort by the industry to produce a single platform for developers to build on. The PS3 may be powerful, but its SPEs can't simulate the three general purpose cores of the 360, and the Wii hardware is different enough from both that software emulation on either system would likely be impossible.
Who would back this single console? Nintendo? They make money selling their hardware, they have no incentive to stop. Sony? They make their money off of licensing of third party developers, if they give up their hardware they lose all their revenue from the game division. Microsoft? They may not make money, but the 360's mission is to push DirectX and Microsoft's proprietary APIs on developers, attempting to lock them to their platform, they aren't going to push a single open platform. - Sherman901, on 02/29/2008, -1/+3now if only they'd release wii for north america..
oh wait... they just suck balls at supplying enough of them. - rova, on 02/29/2008, -2/+4Because then I get to play it for 10 more months. I am buying to to play it right?
- Misanthrope, on 02/29/2008, -1/+3Seriously. I don't recall the last game that had amazing gameplay on the Wii. SMG I guess, and I'm sure someone will say Brawl...but come on. 98% of the software on the Wii just plain blows.
I have a Wii. It's the first "Next Gen" I bought. But when it glowed blue the other day....I turned it the ***** off, because I just don't care. - mousky, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Yawn. I thought the "Nintendo Wii vs. PS3" thread was replaced by the "Ha, ha, to all owners of HD-DVD player" thread.
The whole 'Wii vs PS3 vs. XBox 360" debate is utter nonsense. Why can't people just enjoy the console they bought? - zeebo, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2And it would be $1000 and wouldn't ever happen on a large scale due to the contractural obligations of the hardware suppliers. There isn't going to be a single console any time soon, this industry just doesn't work like that. Neither is hardware power the major selling point, most people could care less about system specifications. Do you know what the best selling gaming hardware was last generation? It wasn't the Xbox (which was slightly more capable than the Gamecube), or even the Playstation 2. It was the Pac Man, Galaga, and Pole Position.
As for people buying the Wii for Wii Sports, that phenomenon is nothing new. People buy consoles all the time for a single game, then they wind up buying more as time goes on. Guitar Hero was a major system seller on the PS2, Halo is the major system seller for Microsoft, and going back further people bought the Playstation just for Final Fantasy 7. - inactive, on 02/29/2008, -3/+5Nintendo is not worth more than Sony, sorry bud.
- corejava2, on 02/29/2008, -4/+6Things will probably pick up for the PS3 in Japan when MGS4 and Final Fantasy drop. If not, then THAT would be a headline worth digging. But this... not so much when you take into account SSBB.
- fhornplayer, on 03/01/2008, -1/+3Who would have thought that a system that appeals to everyone would have been successful?
- ericrous, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Jesus, you sound like Tom Cruise describing L Ron Hubbard. Get at ***** room, fanboy.
- candafilm, on 02/29/2008, -1/+3Unless you're in the business you shouldn't really care. I still buy games because they are fun. Just let the fanboys fight it out since they are obviously so insecure about their purchase that they feel the need to attack the other consoles. Competition is good for everybody people.
