- jonstewart24, on 02/01/2009, -5/+94Well it comes with the console...
- chaosblade77, on 02/01/2009, -4/+45Worldwide Wii Sports sales - Japan Wii Sports sales = Worldwide Wii Sales - Japanese Wii Sales
Wii Sports may be the single best selling game of all time, but it's not exactly "fair" considering it's bundled with the fastest selling console of all time in every single region except Japan. - Renton, on 02/01/2009, -2/+43Protip: girls play video games too.
- MattEaston, on 01/31/2009, -10/+50I can't believe Nintendogs has sold over 20 million - what is wrong with everybody?!
- ShutItDown, on 02/01/2009, -6/+38I would consider that cheating.. but thats just me.
- vsujohn2, on 02/01/2009, -2/+23Super Mario Bros was bundled with NES for a while. Still 40 million is impressive regardless. Sold 3.47million in Japan, unbundled which is the 17th highest selling game in Japan all-time.
- djphatjive, on 02/01/2009, -4/+23Wouldn't that mean IE is the best selling Browser around?
- kg37, on 02/01/2009, -0/+18The Wii Fit number of 14 million is VERY impressive, considering it is $90, difficult to find, and has only been around for just over a year.
- arsheroica, on 02/01/2009, -2/+19Right...like Super Mario Bros.
- Daemastrius, on 02/01/2009, -3/+18If i'm not mistaken, at some point in the sales history of the NES, SMB was bundled with every NES like the Wii is with Wii Sports.
- ButchersBoy, on 02/01/2009, -0/+14I'd rather clean up a virtual ***** than a real one.
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -2/+14Kids like it. Don't worry, when they grow up they'll migrate to violent and bloodier games just like the rest of us.
When I was a kid I played with a Tamagotchi, not particularly proud of it now. Although back then I would rather spend more time playing creative games like Theme Hospital and Theme Park. - arsheroica, on 02/01/2009, -1/+13It was THE game to own when the NES came out -because- it was bundled. How can you say that one would have sold just as many if it weren't bundled, but the other wouldn't have? Wii Sports sold like crazy in Japan where it wasn't bundled.
- cinephile24, on 02/01/2009, -1/+10Not exactly, it just shows that a lot of people own a wii... it's bundled with the console :)
- ShutItDown, on 02/01/2009, -1/+10i like it. its fun to play with people. its simple and fun.
- mdoom, on 02/01/2009, -1/+10Most used? sadly yes.
- Maxamegalon2000, on 02/01/2009, -0/+8Are you saying Wii Sports wasn't THE game tow own when Wii came out? People who didn't know anything about the console, or even video games, wanted to try "that bowling game."
- arsheroica, on 02/01/2009, -2/+10So was Super Mario Bros. Derrrrrrrrrr
- JlmAWP, on 02/01/2009, -9/+17I am one of the biggest Nintendo fanboys you'll ever meet, but Wii Sports being bundled with the console makes this kind of bogus.
Super Mario Bros. was THE game to own back when the NES came out, and would most likely have had similar numbers even if it hadn't have been bundled. If Wii Sports had been separate, I wouldn't have bought it, and I'm sure many feel the same way. SMB is the spiritual winner here. - G-RaZoR, on 02/01/2009, -0/+8I am pretty sure nobody had to say that. Thanks though, for ruining a perfectly good day.
- notoneofus, on 02/01/2009, -0/+7I know it does in the US, but it doesn't in Japan. What about other markets?
- AdmiralJimbob, on 02/01/2009, -0/+7They are coming out with a new version.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Sports_Resort - Cubeforce, on 02/01/2009, -1/+7A lot, just like in Japan where it isn't bundled.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+6Is that from SMB3 World 8-1?
- cigawoot, on 02/02/2009, -2/+7And for 39 million of those users its the only title they have for their Wii.
- Maxamegalon2000, on 02/01/2009, -2/+7Do they even sell Wii Sports separately in other countries? Why would they?
- perfectsilence, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5Wii sports is fun for people that have friends.
- Sogui, on 02/01/2009, -3/+8Now that they have such a huge audience, can we get some decent games?
Seriously I haven't bought a Wii game in a year... at least give us some more Zelda love, not some Gamecube port (though it was good). - ileftfark, on 02/01/2009, -1/+6It probably has to do with the Wii players demographics - XBOX and PS3 owners are usually males, 12-35. Contrast with the Wii, which has an appeal range of ages 2-Nearly Dead. Hell, my grandparents have a Wii. They don't give a ***** about Zelda, they play puzzle games and simple things like Wii Golf.
Basically, it's the 'casual gamer' that the Wii has won over, which is why you aren't going to see the kind of numbers for the hardcore gamer games that you would with CoD4 or any game that every 16 year old kid plays. - WhoDoneIt, on 02/01/2009, -1/+6And what would you propose they call if they don't call it a game?
- Philbert, on 02/01/2009, -0/+5No the fact that it's better than the others makes it good.
- arsheroica, on 02/01/2009, -2/+7Yes, to everyone pointing out how this "doesn't count" because Wii Sports was bundled - bear in mind that the same is true of SMB.
- sanman, on 02/01/2009, -0/+4I'm a guy who's waiting for Wii Sports Resort, and that new MotionPlus gadget. I'd really love to try some sword-fighting games with that.
- darconi, on 02/01/2009, -1/+5except that these numbers were from Nintendo themselves...
- dhwebb, on 02/01/2009, -0/+4IIRC it was a dual game cartridge, SMB and Duck Hunt.
- merher, on 02/01/2009, -1/+5Just like IE with windows, you cant argue with the numbers; no matter how unfair it may seem.
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -3/+7Wii Sports is in no universe the best game on Wii.
Twilight Princess? Super Mario Galaxy? Smash Bros. Brawl? Resident Evil 4? GH3/WT, RockBand 2? - chaosblade77, on 02/01/2009, -1/+5I agree. Mario Kart Wii, Wii Fit, and several DS games are a lot more impressive than any bundled game's sales.
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -3/+7Wii-Play was crap. Wii-Sports (Tennis) was fun till you exhaust it. I'm sick of Wii marketing and promo sites announcing virtual console games as main releases. Who cares, it's so easy to get an emulator and have all the VC games, lets alone see each one announced on new release lists and what not. We need more serious RPG's.
- purzzzell, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3Read the quote - they're not saying "best-selling" anymore.
They've changed it to "most-owned console game".
You can't argue with it if they word it that way.
Also, in Japan, where it doesn't come with the console, it has something on the order of a 50% attach rate (50% of wii buyers buy wii sports), which definitely says something for it - how many games do half the people that own a system have? (poor grammar, sorry, but my point is clear). - LogitechG15, on 02/01/2009, -0/+3There was also a lot less gamers back then though.
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -11/+14Anyone else feel screwed that wii sports kinda sucks, but its still the best game available on wii? Cant they come out with a new version?
- maduin, on 02/01/2009, -0/+3Problem not solved, the average consumer has no idea what an emulator is, or roms, or what the s-video port does on the back of their video card. Even if they did, they wouldn't be able to switch the signal to output to their TV. Hell, most of them don't even know what the inside of a computer looks like. It's why Best Buy can charge $100 to install a stick of RAM, because the average consumer is an idiot who earns money with their time so they can spend money to save time on learning how to do anything for themselves.
- ileftfark, on 02/01/2009, -1/+4Wii Fit is definitely better if you like simple sports games, but try out No More Heroes if you want to try out more of a "gamer's game".
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -3/+6Since day 1, my thoughts were that Wii sports is fun, if overly simplistic (hell, I still play it). But my overall impression was "Okay, it's a good demonstration of the motion controls, it certainly uses them effectively, if nothing else." Oh, how horribly wrong I was. Here I was thinking that Wii Sports was a terrific "proof of concept" demonstrating that motion controls can add to the game experience, but most everything since then has seemed like a step back.
- perfectsilence, on 02/01/2009, -0/+3have you met anybody that haven't played Wii Sports? it's WAY more popular than SMB.
- SreyaNotfilc, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3It saddens me when I see statements like the ones above. People should be free to play anything they want to. If 20 million people decided to purchase Nintendogs, that's fine. Why should we conform to one form? That is the "hardcore" gaming.
It's like saying that we should get our information from one source because it is high creditable (CNN) instead of using another news and information outlet (Digg) that provides us with a variety of information. Or sticking to the most watched network (CBS) instead tuning in to the SciFi channel.
I find that it's awesome that games such as Nintendogs are able to stand a chance against a more hardcore game such as Half Life. It's great that someone can create a form of entertainment that isn't conventional and be successful with their product. Variety is awesome and it shouldn't be looked down upon just because it doesn't follow the mold. - kanuk20, on 02/01/2009, -2/+5Well then, Solitaire that comes with Windows XP/Vista should be the best selling game of all time, Wii Sports shouldn't count since you can buy it on its own.
- inactive, on 02/01/2009, -2/+5You are not alone in burying VGChartz. I do it every time, especially when their spambot digg accounts submit things.
- doctechnical, on 02/01/2009, -0/+2Then I'm surprised there's no Nintenbabies.
