They're all toys. The question is: Which one fits YOUR tastes. Each one has it's strengths and weaknesses. - spoonard, on 10/11/2007, -9/+46Wii is running out of steam? You should be running out of steam by flapping your uninformed lips the way you are now. The Wii is outselling the PS3 3:1 and the Xbox360 2:1. So if by 'out of steam' you mean 'selling two and three times as fast the competitors' then yes, it is out of steam. Next time you want to make a stupid, uninformed comment, stop...think about it for a second...then don't.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -5/+40Is that why there are still people lining up for it whenever a store announces they have them in stock?
- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -13/+35In that case, Dumble, you should all quit console gaming and start playing more CS and SC. You want skill? Come to the PC.
Or do your friends mean: "More skill than the Wii, but not too much skill?" Then that tiny island known as PS3 land is right for you!
Seriously though, I hate when people say that Wii isn't "hardcore" or something -- not that it is, but they imply that the PS3 and Xbox360 are hardcore, in some fashion. I say none of them are. Can you play video games for a living with consoles? Do consoles have Star Craft, Unreal Tournament, or Counter Strike? No? Then sit down, you're all kids.
Or, one can agree that "pure skill" gaming isn't the end all and be all of gaming. I personally own a PC for "hardcore" gaming and a Wii when I just want to have fun. I feel like the 360 isn't fun enough to beat out the Wii and isn't skill oriented enough to beat out the PC. They're mutts that can't do anything best.
I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong (although I did deliberately phrase some of this in provocative ways). This is just my opinion, I know. Just hoping you can see a different perspective here. - EochaidRiata, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19"Old as the hills:"
The other story failed because it is blog spam. This version links directly to the actual article. - Bega, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23yeah, more and more people are buying it, the question is, who will keep playing it?
I got mine back in january, I played the hell out of it for about a month and then, I just stopped. I'm a college student so I'm not overflowing with cash to buy just about every single game that comes out so I have to limit myself to what I consider really good titles. The problem is, wii really hasn't had another 'classic' that I would consider buying, (paper mario is just not my style, thanks). I'm really aching to play it, but there's just nothing there that I want right now. I want to play RE4 for it, but that's not for another month or so. I have to wonder if I'm the exception, or have most people just stopped playing after a while.
Of course all that will change once super smash bros brawl comes out. - WhereAmI, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20@fatdog789 (#6842463)
It hasn't been almost a year...barely over 6 months... - coasterswim, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15@ acex23
I know, right? A console is only as awesome as its production rate. That is the single deciding factor that will determine how much I love it once I have it. - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17@Dumbledorito -
Pick up SSX Blur and actually pull off an uber trick. It requires a great deal more skill than any game that you can play with two analog sticks and a bunch of buttons. - justice7, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14I have a wii, and its been collecting dust now for months.
i'm bored as ***** with it, and i could really give a flying ***** how many they sell over the next x number of years. What i CARE about is whether or not any decent games are on the way.. and its looking pretty grim, just a re-hash of old Cube/N64 titles... yipee...
My 360 has been getting nearly all my attention. Lovin' the halo3 beta, guitar hero 2, Rainbow Six Vegas and of course Gears
35 Million people are going to buy a Wii for Wii Sports? I'm doubting this. They need to come out with some good games. - aurorous, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13wageslaven every single one of your arguments were used last year to explain why the Wii would sit on the shelves while everybody bought a PS3. Change the phrase "Waving your arm around" to "drawing on a screen" and those exact same arguments were used 3 years ago to explain why the PSP would completely destroy the DS and drive nintendo out of the handheld markets. If your heavily spun assessment of the video game industry were right Nintendo would be 24 months away from bailing out of the hardware market entirelyjust as sega did last Gen.
The reason there are shortages now is because even Nintendo didn't think the Wii would be this successful. Even most nintendo fanboys figured that 2 weeks after launch the shelves would be full of Wii's. And they therefore they didn't pre-order and ended up regretting it later. So far every shred of evidence says Nintendo got it right.
The basic premise behind both the DS and Wii is that modern video game controls are too complex for most people. It's become a steep point of entry in the past 10 years and a lot of people just don't have the skill or dexterity to master 2 analog sticks and 10 different buttons. You ever try to teach a non-gamer the control scheme to any Madden game in the last 5 years? The motion controls change the paradigm and make the control more natural. The only thing missing now is the 3rd party developers need to wake up and start making good use of the controls.
Nintendo is often compared to Apple and there are similarities in how they do business. But where in the computer world we see the Mac as a relatively expensive niche product that a dedicated core of fans support while the PC is for the masses, I see the role reversed in video games. I see the PS3 and the 360 catering to the 5-10 million hardcore gamers who only play FPS's and only care about graphics while everybody else in the world buys a Wii because it caters to them. According to studies 60% people who play games online are women playing flash based tetris clones. Microsoft and Sony don't care about them and your probably offended that they're even consider gamers. Nintendo's going to make (yet another) mountain of money of those gamers, the software sales for the DS are already proving that. - Zap2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13@Bodhesatva
"Do consoles have starcraft, Unreal tornament or Counter Strike?
Yes...N64 had starcraaft, Unreal Torn is going to PS3 and Xbox 360, and Counter Strike was on the xbox.
Maybe you should look things up first? Both consoles and computer have different types of great game. Anyone who thinks only one platform has everything, anyone will ever want, is an idoit. - jhnshft, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11They'll have trouble making their numbers if they don't start shiping more. I still can't find one anywhere.
- Zephkiel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Actually, UT3 is coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 and CounterStrike has been out for the Xbox. Also, Super Smash Bros. Melee has plenty of tournaments with cash prizes and the top player has won over 40,000 USD. Not as much as some Koreans have won with StarCraft, but it's still not something to scoff at.
- SaintStryfe, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15At my gamestop, Wii sell out in two days, while for three weeks, we've taken more PS3's in trade in (usually for Cash, not store credit, meaning people are in financial trouble, and not that they just didn't like it or played it out) then we've sold. Used PS3's sit on the shelves for weeks (one 20g model is going for 4 weeks now), with nothing more then casual glances, while Used Wii's (I think we've had less then a dozen in the 7 months) go out the same day.
Trust me, Nintendo has a bona-fide hit on their hands. Sony, mean while, has some serious problems they need to address - the biggest one is people who bought the system seemed to do so for status, or for blu-ray, not for the games where they make money. - MaximegalonInfo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9They are called paragraphs. - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@WhereAmI and Dumbledorito -
Well, first off, I didn't say anything about baseball. I said SSX blur. Wii Sports is a different animal entirely. It's a pack-in meant to get you used to a new control system. The learning curve is going to be VERY small so you don't get frustrated. They want you to have fun with the new control system.
SSX Blur, on the other hand, is a bit more hardcore. I have had MAJOR difficulty in getting things done in that game. Other people seem to be able to master it, so I can't claim it's the fault of the controls.
But the conceit here is that other gaming consoles are less of a toy than the Wii. Get over yourself.
The original NES was definitely considered a toy in its day. I'm sure people who played Atari 2600s with joysticks and paddle controls looked at the D-pad and two buttons as a gimmicky toy. But consider that it is the basis for every game controller for FIVE console generations since.
They're all toys. The Wii just does something different. And for those who forget, the PS3 included motion sensing as well. - ceralor, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8hdtvdust, while I usually support you, you're wrong here. I have the cash, and I've been looking everywhere constantly, and not a wii to be found at Target, best Buy, Wal-Marts, nor the circuit city an hour away.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7According to ebgames Wii games scheduled for the rest of May & June in the US:
Mario Party 8
Mortal Kombat Armageddon
Surf's Up
Tamagotchi
Big Brain Academy
Chicken Shoot
Scarface
The Sims 2: Pets
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Escape from Bug Island
Resident Evil 4
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Pokemon Battle Revolution
The Bigs
Cosmic Family
Driver Parallel Lines
Mercury Meltdown: Revolution
Ratatouille
Transformers
There are several movie shovelware and last-gen ports in there, but hopefully a few gems as well. 19 games in 5 weeks isn't too bad. For reference they list 16 games for the 360 and 8 for the PS3 over the same period. - glittalogik, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5@Bega:
Trauma Centre is meant to be awesome, and Rayman is pretty fun. I'm hanging out for RE4 and Katamari. - gameboyhippo, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Here's the problem with PC games. I find them all unappealing. No Sonic, no Mario, no thanks!
- Mrstupid7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Just like the novelty of touch screens?
- GolfDude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4by 2012, the HD Wii will be released, so surely they are including that number as well..
- Bodhesatva, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Zap: Right right, I knew that technically the games existed on several platforms (I even own Starcraft 64) -- my real point is that they aren't the game's primary systems: every one of them is a port from the PC, and thus far, all of them have been crap (CS for Xbox, SC64 for the N64 were shades of their original glory).
Your choice of gaming with consoles is fine. I personally love my Wii, and have owned a PS2, PS1, N64 and several other systems in the past. Just don't expect these to be the pinnacle of gaming skill, ever. And again, you can stop calling me an idiot, since I already knew those games existed. It's like saying that Zelda exists for non-Nintendo platforms: technically true, since it was on the Phillips CD-i. It was so horrible that I don't really consider it comparable design. If you'd like to say that Starcraft is "on consoles" because a non-online, toned down version with no mouse support exists on the N64 (as opposed to the Computer version, which is fully online capable and still played regularly in professional gaming), please, feel free. - iofthestorm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Uhh, it says in the US only, and if you predict that Wiis will sell in the 3 major regions equally (US, Europe (not to belittle it or anything, Europe is bigger but w/e), and Japan), Wii will sell 105 million by then. Reading comprehension ftw.
- troye, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Yeah, Nintendo, may sell 35 million Wiis by 2012, but how many of them are going to have online gaming. I'm guessing maybe 10. Playing by yourself gets old after a while. I can only play so much Mario games or a non-online RPG. That's why I went with the 360: I can showoff my gamer-score, Xbox Live, great graphics.
- itsameericle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Actually you can game professionally on consoles.
www.mlgpro.com
Also, I don't see why anybody cares what's "better" or "worse" in someone else's opinion. If I enjoy something, that's all that matters (and should matter).
Sure, some things may be considered more intense...but different games (including competitive ones) are often equally challenging between platforms, yet simply in very different ways. - zhulien, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6I just hope they release a wired controller soon or perhaps one with a USEFUL range so I don't have to stand within 2 metres of the tv to play.
- ripstuntz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I dont care how much the Wii is outselling the 360/PS3.. 35,000,000 is not happening.
- zwilliams, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Nintendo could hit that target of 35 million by 2009 if they could produce enough of them. I'm still waiting to buy mine.
- flair1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I found one as sears.com at $249 plus shipping! thanks to

I think you mean there are not usually 2 Zelda games or 2 Mario games games on the same console.

I'm sure their expecting to go broke and fail to meet all their goals. What an insightful, unbiased piece of news. - MillenniumX, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Forever? Certainly not. But for the time being, it shows no signs of slowing down. Quite the opposite: it's actually speeding up.
- morrislevy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Easily done. Money in the bag, Nintendo.
- AJRiddle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I prefer the Beatle over the marketing chief.
- TDR25, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3As much as I like Nintendo, I just think that comment was delusional. I don't doubt that they can sell 35 million units, but I don't think the console can last till 2012 if the 360 and PS3 are still around and a lot cheaper by then. I'm saying this on my part because I honestly don't believe that processing power and graphics makes a good console, but it does kind of matter.

I'm sure during that timespan Nintendo can manage to release a couple Mario titles, another Zelda title and loads of Wii Sports type titles to prompt people to buy the system. Add that to an inevitable price cut somewhere down the road and 35 million is easily attainable.
- metagov, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3@acex23
At the _this_ rate, Nintendo is on track to sell 7 million every 6 months for a total of 84 million through 2012. Assuming half of those sales are in the US, they're looking at 42 million units moved. So, you're right. It's nowhere near their estimates :-) - DarkSora09, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Does anybody honestly believe they'll keep up this pace?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5I seriously doubt Nintendo will, because by 2010 no doubt there will be another Nintendo console out, a la generation next Version 2 -Wii
At this rate of being that the general public still unable to successfully obtain a Wii and those who have a Wii are now complaining about lack of Games and quality graphics that their Wii's have collected dust since the hype died down, i can honestly bet the Wii won't be as popular come Xmas of 2008 , let alone by 2012........
Wishful thinking at it's best - conkers209, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I'm in Georgia and you are able to find everything for Wii, the system on the other hand, some places like Bust Buy I see them put serveral Wii's on shelves (about 10+) and other places around here, they keep them in the back and you have to ask for it. So next time you goto a store and you don't see any Wii's, ask someone that works in the store, and you may get a good chance they have one in the back. Besides, even if Nintendo has to come out with a new system 2 years from now, at lease that won't sound as bad as if Sony stops support for the PS3 because that is $600 and the Wii is only $250. But I can't wait until the end of this year to see how sales for all three systems do.
- MillenniumX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Why not? Given the current proportions in the markets, 35,000,000 in the US would equal about 70,000,000 worldwide. The PS2 sold far more than that, so why wouldn't the Wii be able to sell this many?
- Wiirollen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Nintendo Might Make A sequel to Kid Icarus for the wii the 1987 NES classic Might get a Make over but if so the game probably won't be Released until 2008
