- chaosblade77, on 03/20/2009, -1/+25Nintendo said as early as E3 last year, maybe earlier, that they wanted to incorporate more non-game related functions into their portable. I don't think there's anything secret about it, since they were bragging about their cook books, software to find local restaurants, and baseball stat tracking for Mariners games. Then there's what was brought up with the DSi itself: another browser, the MovingMemo program, and Pictochat is still around. Finally, in the Iwata Asks, there was mention of further Nintendo branded basic applications like special clocks and calculators.
Given the emphasis on first party applications, there's not much question they would also want third party applications to help push the store and make it a selling point. - GTOFan350, on 03/20/2009, -5/+28Shigeru Miyamoto meet Mr. Steve Jobs

May be as important as gameplay, but if the graphics are the best part of the game, and the gameplay sucks, I would have rather them emphasize on the gameplay.
Graphics < Gameplay - henhouse0, on 03/20/2009, -1/+16What's next? Jailbreaking the DSi?
- Kotoyumu, on 03/20/2009, -2/+16Its not all about the graphics, thats the reason why Nintendo has been so successful, its about gameplay and what the user gets out of it. I like my DS over my PSP. I just purchased Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and that game is crazy fun. Especially how Rockstar applied the use of the touchscreen feature, makes it a great portable game.
- MusicMagi, on 03/20/2009, -4/+15Graphics, yeah.. that's what's important in gaming.
- handheldchimp, on 03/20/2009, -3/+12I have been beta testing a developer model of the DSi, and it has had a test app store for months. This includes emulation of older console games, just like the Wii can do. It is currently, very limited in what it does, and apps must also go through Nintendo. Their policy with submitting apps is still being written, but it is way more strict then the iPhone app store.
- DarkprinceArmon, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6I think you are forgetting the fact that Nintendo has a entire 3rd party of companies that have been happily making tons of money off of the DS gaming world. I'm sure if Nintendo wanted to open the market to them on developing apps for their stores they would be elated to make more money developing stuff. You may be right about Apple having a lead, but I don't think Nintendo is directly competing for space in the same vein as Apple is. I don't hear the tech sector saying the DS is competing with the iTouch and iPhone and vice versa.
- Khast, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Okay, let's go with the Sony PSP...oops it too has games that are $20-40 as well.
Xbox360 - $20-$60
PS3 -$20-$60
Wii -$20-$60
Of course you could always go to places like GameStop, EB, or Pawn Shops and get games $5-$50 for the respective systems.
Lovely excuse... - punkcat, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4i bet it makes a cause to upgrade.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Isn't the DSi already out in Japan? And isn't there an DSi app store in Japan? Hell, isn't the whole selling point for the DSi the fact you can access a DSi app store?
- DarkprinceArmon, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Why is their always some person that thinks that two or more pieces of hardware cannot share the same space. I get so tired of reading retarded post like..." I have a Wii and since I bought my PS3 my Wii has been collecting dust blah blah blah... I'm thinking of putting my Wii on ebay." Why be a troll when its not necessary?
- slicecom, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4They better not make it point based like the Wii and Xbox Live systems. I want a dollar amount for each item and the ability to make micro payments, like PS3 and iPhone allow.
- punkcat, on 03/20/2009, -4/+7graphics draw you to the game, gameplay makes you stay.
- NathanialBurrer, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3http://tinyurl.com/d5nl9j
No. There will be points, and they will be separate.
All in all, I hope the DSi flops so I can just get a DS2. My Lite will work just fine for my gaming needs. - chaosblade77, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3True or not, I'm really surprised Nintendo doesn't have a Virtual Console of sorts on the DSi for portable systems. That would be a huge selling point.
GBA emulation isn't possible on DS hardware as far as I know, but hardware emulation shouldn't be out of the question unless they chose to remove it for whatever reason. Maybe the boosted RAM and processor can handle the emulation though. - Billions, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4Sounds cool except for the limitation to the DSi model, which ignores their huge installed DS base, and essentially makes the DSi a "new device" release. I'm sure it won't really limit the success of the DSi, although when drawing comparisons to the Apple AppStore, you have to acknowledge that by supporting both iPhones and both iPod Touch models, Apple avoided alienating their earlier adopters.
- DarkprinceArmon, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Although there are a lot of homebrew apps out there already for the DS than makes it more than just a game machine, I think Nintendo doesn't want to stray to far from the hand that feeds it. I don't see a direct challenge to the Apple App store coming form the creation of the DSi as most would like it to be. I think Nintendo would still like things to be limited to gaming in a sense when it comes to their hardware. I think Nintendo will use its DSi Store for VC GB, GBA, family legacy DLC, for game related material to enhance some of its new releases, and for some of its products in the Non game categories like dictionaries, translation devices, maps, and cook books. Hopefully though they will take note of some of the cooler things that have been done in the homebrew area and allow some of that content to show up in the store as DLC for the new device. I think it would help better sell the device to people who already have two or three DSes
- YellowSnowDemon, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Mirror's Edge was crap on the HD twins too.
- chaosblade77, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3As a 3D artist, wouldn't you at least be one of the few that understand that style is more important than sheer detail? In that respect, there is plenty that can be done with the DS.
Also, gameplay is far more important to most people than graphics. I don't care how good a game looks, artistically or technically; if I'm not enjoying it I won't keep playing it. It doesn't work the other way around though, a game might look like crap, but if I'm enjoying it I'll keep playing it. - Elranzer, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3They're letting you use SD cards for that.
- levitron, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4I'm a huge fan of online flash games (turret defense in particular)- I have pissed away way too many hours on simple, clever games, and would gladly pay a couple bucks to have them on my DS, to play on buses, planes, cars, etc.
- Elranzer, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3"Maybe they can take some of the money they earn from it and make a handheld with better graphics."
Yeah, because the success of the monochrome Game Boy versus the Sega GameGear, the GameBoy Color versus the Nomad, GameBoy Advance versus everything and the DS versus PSP really makes Nintendo emphasize graphics' importance in handhelds. - fuckupedoslut, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I second the first poster. Was this supposed to be a secret? Anyone with a good head on their shoulders could anticipate what they've long hinted at. - uahgekido, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I agree though, to make this win it should be closer to iTunes. Too bad they already said it would use DSi points. There were rumblings that DSi points and Wii points wouldn't be cross-compatible, but I hope that turns out to be BS once it hits the States.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Or just buy a flash cart and download all the games for free :)
- Charlotte_Web, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I don't know if Apple was the first to pair an app store with a mobile device, but they were definitely the first one to do it right. The app store is a big driver of sales for the iPhone. Apple built the business model, and now everyone is flocking to it. Nintendo would have been ahead of the curve.
To their credit, Nintendo did ship the Wii with an app store, at the same time that the DS Lite was launched.
I wonder if someone will ship a flash drive for the DS that will allow you to store apps - Charlotte_Web, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Meant to say flash RAM drive
- Elranzer, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Xbox Live *is* available for original Xbox, though...
- fuckupedoslut, on 03/20/2009, -1/+3Of course it doesn't apply to DS or DS lite. That's like asking if XBOX Live is available for the XBOX. It'd need extensive upgrades. Silly.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2The DSi's got an extra 8(12?) megs of ram, twice what the DS has already. I imagine that DSiWare can access all of said RAM (why else have it?), and in a much more direct fashion than the DS Web Browser's ram pack, which is as slow as hell.
- XxtraLarGe, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2The problem is the accessibility of the developer tools. It costs around $2000 for the tools and getting accepted isn't easy either. Apple has a huge lead on them in the downloadable game market because the barrier to entry is much lower if you already own a Mac, and still not near as much if you don't. Mac Mini for $600, an iPod Touch for $229, ADC Pro membership to sell on iTunes is $100, and the tools themselves are free if you just want to try it out.
- AirRaven, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2"Easy to Program For" doesn't come into it- it's just cheaper.
The PS2 was a nightmare to program for, by most accounts- that didn't really stop it. - diggdowner, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Hopefully Sony can take note and (finally) release some sort of app store too. There's only so much you can do with the browser and portals...
- Elranzer, on 03/20/2009, -2/+4You'll need an AceKard for that (only flash cart that works for the DSi. Sorry, R4 fans).
- chaosblade77, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2That's not really worth it is it? I read that the Acekard can't be updated to work around DSi firmware updates that may lock it out. And (as far as I know) there's no guarantee that it will be compatible with the NA/PAL DSis. So investing in one of those might leave you with a useless $20 cart at some point.
Hopefully TeamCyclops releases a DSi card that can recieve updates to work around the firmware updates, their cards have awesome features. I don't have a flash cart for my current DS, but that's probably what I would look for to get one. Waiting for DSi cart options and the NA DSi release before I take the plunge though. - fuckupedoslut, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2My apologies. XBOX isn't really my system (I'm more of a Nintendo/PS girl), the only one I have is modded to all hell. A better example would have been to compare Wii to GC.
- wafflesomd, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Does this apply to the original DS and DS lite? Or is it strictly locked to the DSi?
- fuckupedoslut, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Well, I wouldn't say the whole selling point, but when you consider how much of a focus it is/has been...this news isn't "news" at all!
Oh and go Mariners! I love the idea of that stat tracking feature...even though I know this season might not have stats worth tracking... especially with my beloved Ibanez gone... - avidlinuxuser, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2The SDK for the DS is not $2k. It's a few hundred dollars. The only SDK that Nintendo has out now that cost over $1k is the Wii dev kit but that can be had for as cheap as $2k.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Nintendo loves money and the Apple iPhone App Store makes a lot of money. Nintendo already discussed selling games online for DSi. It's just too bad that DS Phat and Lite can't access the store when it launches because of the DSi's built in storage.
- Elranzer, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2"It [DS] costs around $2000 for the tools and getting accepted isn't easy either. Apple has a huge lead on them in the downloadable game market because the barrier to entry is much lower if you already own a Mac"
You realize that a development-capable Mac Pro costs more than $2000, right? - apena89, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1SD card?
- nrox653, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1If you're a 3D artist (and note you're an ARTIST), you're contradicting your own ***** self while bragging to all of us that you can create 3D crap. Ooh, look at you, you can draw a cube in 3D; good for you! You're the least likely to know if graphics or gameplay is important, MrArtistMan.
Graphics is probably the third thing people think about when buying a game. - viper001, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1I love my DS, but honestly would enjoy it a lot more if it got an upgrade in the graphics department. I'm not saying graphics are in any way superior to gameplay, but why does it have to be one or the other? Can't we have both?
- R75700, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1No one cares.
- nat014, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1Why not. Sound interesting Nintendo is just following the money!
- sebey, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1well I think nintendo should hold of on that as we really don't have any numbers about how many iphones have download as least one app.
we know that it is a place to make money but is it because it has a really active bunch of iphones or is it all the iphones that have contributed to the appstore 500 million download count?
plus the nintendo ds is in more league with mainstream than an iphone is plus there is legacy there as the ds have been around for a few years now so.I won't say wait on this one ninty. - Tunic, on 03/20/2009, -3/+4Because everyone likes to take an easy to program for cash cow and take it out back to slaughter it.
and/or
don't fix what isn't broken. - inactive, on 03/21/2009, -0/+1Unsurprising, considering that in the list of DSiWare on wikipedia there's only, what, two games and five apps? And that they've been offering a web browser, free, since the DSi's launch?
