- PooChunk, on 01/02/2008, -4/+42Did you even read the article? Games are stored on the Wii and transferred by wifi to the ds. READ
- retral, on 01/02/2008, -1/+35But how lame is that - you can only play a game in the vicinity of your wii? Nah. Most likely they'll have some system like the R4 where you can load the games onto a memory stick.. but you can bet it'll be more secure (to disallow piracy).
DS games are only 8 (or is it 16)-128MB though, so you'll get a good amount of games on even a small 1GB microsd card. I love my R4 - doshindude, on 01/02/2008, -14/+36How is this possible? the DS has no internal memory.....unless they start selling flash cards by the gigabyte.
- Sparkster185, on 01/02/2008, -1/+20I love when a blog steals stuff from another blog, which stole something from a real news source and it makes the front page.
- Humptydank, on 01/02/2008, -1/+16In related news, Microsoft Live was up for ten consecutive minutes.
- kiiwii, on 01/02/2008, -2/+16Considering Nintendo has had DS demo kiosks for years, bringing that home and allowing actual games is just the natural progression.
I highly doubt they saw Sony doing this and thought, "Hey, we should do that too!" - DrywallThief, on 01/02/2008, -5/+18R4 anyone? =P
- Smwbigboss, on 01/02/2008, -3/+15On Animal Crossing, you could transfer NES games from the Gamecube to the GBA. So I guess Nintendo really was the first, unless there was another system before that I'm missing.
- kiiwii, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11I think I'm going to start a blog where I link to digg articles, then submit my article to digg. Bring it full circle.
- Arkz, on 01/02/2008, -0/+11Downloadable games?
Arrrrrrrrrrrr4ds... ^^ - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -1/+10They are launching a commercial flash card in Japan, I'm guessing they will use that and something similar.

Just playing games with a Wii around would be really stupid. - WhereAmI, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6And masterspeaks gets buried like a conservative on Digg.
- retral, on 01/02/2008, -1/+6Not possible.. 4MB = bigger than any single (untrimmed) DS rom I know of.. there'd have to be at least 256MB to be functional - some DS games are 128MB (and perhaps there are a few 256MB ones out there), so 2 roms and your ds is full? I doubt they'd have that.
Most likely they'll employ a system like the R4DS (basically a flash cartridge that uses MicroSD cards) to store games and access those stored games.. Unless this "full game download" thing is only intended for the new DS's that are rumored to have onboard flash memory. - BrandonMills, on 01/02/2008, -1/+6This could bring some credibility to the rumor of a DS redesign with internal memory.
- kiiwii, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4If you'd like, I give you permission to start yet ANOTHER blog that points to the digg stories which point to my blog which link to another digg story.
- Tamant, on 01/02/2008, -3/+7So you gotta have the Wii on and with you everytime you play these games? Thats incredibly stupid and defeats the whole purpose of a portable gaming system.
Flash memory for the DS will create more problems in DS piracy as it is..I don't see how Nintendo will win with this.. - sonochamp, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4RTFA! The DS doesn't have any internal storage.
- Ashex, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4I don't care about being able to download full games. I want WPA
- iofthestorm, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4Indeed, one of the annoying things about the DS is the gimped wi-fi. It's a crappy version of 802.11b, and it doesn't even get anywhere near 2Mbps from what I've seen with downloads in homebrew. However, it could be that the official wi-fi library is faster, but the highest speed download I've ever gotten in DSOrganize's homebrew database is 30KiBps, or ~ 0.24Mbps.
- Borgcube, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4Wii offers a way of paying it already + has a download service of its own + I hope that this means they will make some DS games connectable to Wii games + they are hoping that people who don't own a Wii will buy one.
I ..... must....resist...the....urge....to....buy....Wii! - Shippwreck87, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4You know what would be sweet, being able to put your Virtual Console purchases onto your DS
- kidcodea, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3huh? dude open your eyes.
- dualscreenman, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4Archaic Seal Heat is the only known 256 MB DS game. There are a handful of 128 MB games too. (Most RPGs with craploads of cutscenes)
- Borgcube, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3Legally?
- holeymoley, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4If the Wii is the conduit to the DS, then perhaps the game (and any saved games) are stored on the Wii like a VC game and an upload to the Wii would be required to save a game before shutting off the DS. If the games are like demos and are lost once the DS is shut off, you would have to re-aquire the stored game from the Wii if you want to continue your game at a later time. If the games are really GB or GB Color games, they're likely not much bigger than the demos recently available from kiosks and thus the DS's RAM (?) could accommodate them. It would be awkward, but would avoid having to come up with additional storage media for the DS.
- Po0py, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3I'm sure there will be some kind of cartridge with flash memory in it that you can purchase. There will also probably be some sort of encryption (Although, that is an automatic invitation to hackers, imho.). I wouldn't worry too much about piracy because it is already rampant. If anything it could give people and incentive to stop pirating games. I, amongst many of my friends regularly download DS games purely because I don't want to have to carry the cartridges around. Simple as that. This service, if done correctly, could give me incentive to do things legitimately.
- sonochamp, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3With what portable gaming system? Also, will they call this transfer "squirting" as well?
- chedonline, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3Nicely done.
- NeoTechni, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2PSP does this already, wouldn't that make it the iPod of gaming?
- Zap2, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Even illegally, I know of no way to download games from Wii to DS
- STKD, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2Locked to the MAC address of the DS and tied to your account. There's your authentication scheme right there. Same as they tend to tie multiplayer carts to one DS already.
- chokeaduck, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2You are going to bring upon the downfall of a great system. Remember Dreamcast? Yeah.
- Zap2, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2hacked SNES emulation.....let Nintendo make a emultor...with GameBoy, GBC, and GBA emulator...it will run fine.
- STKD, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2Assume as is easy to do that once you buy a game, it stays attached to your Wii account. You can then transfer it to the flashcart and presumably delete it whenever you want. After all how many games do you really need to keep on one permanently?
Nice idea. - darkNiGHTS, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Glad to see Nintendo embracing the technology of the pirates. Smart move! Now only if TV networks were this fast to catch on... (with bittorrent).
- STKD, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2Technically the DS already has an SD slot. It's just a non-standard version.
- iofthestorm, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Actually, they do go up to 256MB. See Archaic Sealed Hat for one example.
- secretrk1313, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2RAmen to that my friend.
- Zap2, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1a company who wants us to buy their products!
Bastards!! Maybe we'll see a PC store like for the PSP - NeoTechni, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1DS would need an integrated web browser.
- iofthestorm, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Umm, I have a DS and not a PSP but I'll acknowledge that the PSP's hardware capabilities are way better than the DS. For the DS, SNES emulation is just barely 100% speed for most games, whereas the PSP has N64 for crying out loud. And not to mention that the PSP doesn't have gimped wifi, has built-in flash memory slot, upgradeable firmware (well, technically the DS has this too but flashing your firmware is pretty pointless right now and moderately complicated). All things considered, the PSP is many times more powerful than the DS and I was thinking of picking one up used just for homebrew and emulation.
- dbzlotrfan, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Anyone have a mirror of the article, I think the site is down. Right now its up, get mirror encase it does go down.
- NeoTechni, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1"DS which has nearly identicle hardware capabilities to the PSP?"
I'd like some of what you're smoking please. - Borgcube, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1DS could still download the game from the computer instead from the Wii.
- Linh, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1haha, I was thinking the same thing.
- iofthestorm, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Well, people haven't been able to break the Virtual Console's encryption yet so I think their encryption should be fine.
- iofthestorm, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1+ your strange use of + random mathematical symbols + makes your post hard to read.
- Smwbigboss, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2They announced an official slot 1 back in November. It's only scheduled for Japan right now though.
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=67269 - inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1DS which has nearly identicle hardware capabilities to the PSP? And plays PSX games? Ya, they're *****.
- modtho, on 09/10/2008, -0/+1
