Never has this .gif been more appropriate. - cmgogo, on 12/29/2007, -19/+61in the ps2's defense, we are talking about a handheld vs a console here
- AJayD, on 12/29/2007, -4/+37Anyone surprised?
- mufasa, on 12/29/2007, -2/+32Haha, i actually remember in the early days of the DS, probably before it was released, everyone though the PSP was going to sell way better.
- fkr3, on 12/29/2007, -15/+42Wow.. who would have thought a gaming device you can take everywhere and get lots of cheesy little games with lots of bright colours would be popular in Japan.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -3/+30Nintendo and Sony are businesses, not sports teams. So why do they have cheerleaders? And I don't mean the typical attractive female cheerleaders These companies have out of shape internet geek cheerleaders! :)
- rudy23, on 12/29/2007, -7/+24nope. but comparing apples to oranges is
- AwesomeMonster, on 12/29/2007, -2/+19... who said they did?
- Cossa, on 12/29/2007, -6/+21I know this has been said 1000 times in the comments here, but this truly is comparing apples and oranges. I mean, if you have four kids (and a lot of money) you could might feasibly buy each of them a DS. However, you'd likely only have one PS2.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -4/+18Go to any local electronics retailer, and i promise you, the DS costs more than a PS2
- sirflibble, on 12/29/2007, -2/+14My thoughts exactly.. generally a console is purchased one per household, a hand held is one per person. You'd expect hand helds which is sold at a cheaper price point as well to sell better. Seems like non news to me.
- wushi, on 12/29/2007, -1/+11so you're buying the all hardcore vs casual thing ???
marketing... - skywake, on 12/29/2007, -0/+916.5% is still a hell of a lot especially when you consider that that number is skewed towards certain demographics. Get a group of 80+ year olds and maybe you will get 1% of them having a DS but in other groups like 20-24 year old males you might get 70%.
- theprez, on 12/29/2007, -3/+11I'm a videogame fan, not a console fan/fanboy. I'll buy whoever gets/makes the games I like. 360 for Halo, PS3 for MGS4 and FFXIII and the DS for Metroids and FFIV remake. I can't care less who is the company selling the system. If the games are worth it, the system is worth buying.
- asgodwin, on 12/29/2007, -4/+12DS is easy (and cheap) to hack... a la R4 Revolution.
- ZenMojo, on 12/29/2007, -1/+8"Okay, kids, hop in the car. We're going to visit Grandma in Connecticut!"
"But that's an 8 hour drive!"
"Don't worry, why don't you all bring your PLAYSTATION 2's!!!"
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. And in Japan where everyone rides the train...? - inertic, on 12/29/2007, -2/+9I needed a handheld in which I could play some fun games for 1/2 an hour while on the train everyday without having to get too involved in the games. The DS is perfect for that. While the PSP is also a great handheld, it doesn't have as many as the type of games I want that the DS has and it still is out of my price range.
- squirmalicious, on 12/29/2007, -0/+6It's also THE standard for hardware lifetime sales... so this is a pretty big deal.
- directive0, on 12/29/2007, -1/+7Hardcore gamers play everything, so I'm sure a good chunk of the sales are thanks in large part to that demographic.
- BlueSkyfish, on 12/29/2007, -0/+6Just get a slot 1 card. It'll let you play movies and music from a micro SD card.
- pdileepa, on 12/29/2007, -9/+15Compare DS with PSP and not with PS2. DS still wins and that's what we should be looking at.
- B3000, on 12/29/2007, -3/+8Keep in mind that Yaoi and Tentacle rape are also big in Japan
- 4dna, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5i thought the image preview said "haters" ...i kinda like that more.
- Pschkqitzsough, on 12/29/2007, -3/+8I cheer for Nintendo because the stock is making me huge amounts of money :) I'm in at 33.xx since Feb. 07 and have more than doubled my money already and hoping to double it again next year.
- tastypastry, on 12/29/2007, -8/+13Yeah, keep telling yourself that.
- Vash3001, on 12/29/2007, -4/+9The DS has hardcore games on it as well. Only 1 out of my 7 DS games are casual (Wario Ware Touched)
- KingGorilla, on 12/29/2007, -1/+6now it does
- KingGoonie, on 12/29/2007, -1/+6Honestly? I'm surprised. Did I think it would eventually become the best selling gaming device ever? Yes I did... I mean before PS2 wasn't the original gameboy the best selling? So its not that it overtook it in Japan that surprises me, but that it already did it... I figured it would be further along in its life.
- ELCad, on 12/29/2007, -2/+6I could easily fit 10,000 DSs in my house, but I don't. I just have 1 for the 3 players here.
- cmgogo, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4thats exactly it - people will have both. however, since the DS in an on-the-go device, it's usually purchased one per individual, as opposed to a ps2, which would generally be one per household.
- linuxrocks2007, on 12/29/2007, -2/+6Your comment has so many faults it's funny.
1. You used vgchartz as a source. - poxonyou, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Exactly, people are always away from home here in Tokyo. Everyone walks, rides a bike, takes the train...there are so many shops and things to do everywhere. So, it's not a surprise that a portable game console is so popular here. I think the DS benefits from having more quick, pick up and play games, where as the PSP games are often more involving...not too convenient when you're switching between trains every 10-15 minutes.
- Frogee, on 12/29/2007, -3/+7theres a game on ds that could help you with your eyes....
- zeebo, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4And being cheaper is a bad thing why?
- archer104, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4"***** features are better than a ps2, who's are very generic."
...i don't know...have you seen my wife? - KingGoonie, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4So stop looking at the one game in the store and shift your eyes to all the other games..
- Shaflugi, on 12/30/2007, -0/+4..what are you talking about? Any way you slice it, PS2 has still been out 4 and a half years longer, and the sales beat that. That's there not to get?
- whyufail, on 12/29/2007, -2/+5So does that mean there will actually be someone to pictochat with out there?
- TheTjalian, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4I'm getting sick to death of people saying "YEAH BUT THE DS IS A HANDHELD SO IT DOESN'T COUNT!!!11". When was the last time you saw a handheld over take a console, hmm? Only one I can think of would be the Gameboy and gee, wasn't that released around 15 years before the bloody PS2 was around?
Face it, the PS2 got owned. It overtook its sales in under half the time the PS2 was around. It's owned the best selling console ever in Japan, and now it's on its way to trumping the best selling handheld ever, the Gameboy. - alexkorova, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3Still, that means that if you meet a group of 15-25 year olds, probably half of them have a DS!
- sleeknerve, on 12/29/2007, -4/+7it was when the ps2 was selling like hotcakes.
- Biznarie, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2Word.
- CharliesRevenge, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2What's*
But in all seriousness, I agree with you. - inactive, on 12/29/2007, -2/+4That's what the dsfanboy.com just did with this post.
- Tikkimann, on 12/30/2007, -0/+2Actually, the PS2 is really easy to hack now, too. If I recall correctly, you can play burnt DVDs on it all by inserting a special memory card.
- ZenMojo, on 12/29/2007, -2/+4Japan, a country where there's not enough room to sit down since so many people ride the train? When those numbers go global, call me.
- KingGoonie, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2Too bad the wii is better then the 360, which I also love, and the craptacular PS3... Too bad the wii has the best games, and some kick ass third party games like trauma center and zach and wiki. Try again. If you wanna talk mass produced crap, that was the PS1 and its games. PS2 was the only system worth buying, how SOny got that so right, and the PS1 and PS3 so wrong... wow. Well the PSP is good too..
- KingGorilla, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3that's a common misconception about tv and videogames
- ELCad, on 12/29/2007, -2/+4What's more hardcore then Contra 4?
- KingGoonie, on 12/29/2007, -2/+4Both = gaming devices. But your right if you mean consoles... I love my ds, and my ps2, along with my other systems.... but its a pet peeve of mine when people call the DS a console. Consoles are the wii, gamecube, xbox, 360, ps, ps2, ps3, etc... handhelds like the gameboy, the psp, the ds, the lynx, the gamegear are different.
