- Okari, on 02/22/2008, -7/+288I miss the old days where when you actually bought a game and/or console you got the full thing and didn't have to pay extra for stuff that you should already be getting.
- Soave, on 02/22/2008, -6/+135As long as Brawl is free... :)
- Adam420, on 02/22/2008, -8/+95Thats what I really liked about nintendo games, they have never done this, like everyone else.
- artemus, on 02/22/2008, -1/+87As far as I recall, Nintendo said that it would let third-parties determine whether or not to charge for online services. I wonder if this is related to that.
- nymphetamine, on 02/22/2008, -1/+83Here's my gamertag: 0138 1777 8763 5399
- jawbreaker4fs, on 02/22/2008, -3/+74I'm going to be pretty pissed off if I have to pay for Mario Kart online
- doshindude, on 02/22/2008, -5/+71Nintendo LIVE?
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -3/+58I have no friends to play with my wii.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/22/2008, -5/+53I'm not. Playing online should always be free. It's one thing to offer ridiculously priced DLC, it's another thing to charge people to play online multi-player.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/22/2008, -6/+40Cool, but it's meaningless without you adding mine first. 4578 8463 0218 9673
- ubuntu710, on 02/22/2008, -11/+45Oh so now I have to PAY to have a friend code!!!??
- shit, on 02/23/2008, -0/+33*bloop*
"0138 1777 8763 5399 is online"
(edit: whoops, apparently I don't know how the reply feature works.) - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+34Like Diablo II LOD.
- artemus, on 02/22/2008, -6/+36And yet PS3 has the smallest install base of all the major consoles. Imagine that!
- mywhitenoise, on 02/22/2008, -2/+30I did read the article, and it's pretty ***** vague, it could be interpreted many ways.
- Fallout911, on 02/22/2008, -9/+37I own the Wii and it's been sitting there for about 2 months with absolutely no play.
This will lengthen that. - SPECOPS, on 02/22/2008, -2/+30you have the perfect username
- theaceoffire, on 02/22/2008, -1/+28I hope so. They need free online play.
- mywhitenoise, on 02/22/2008, -0/+25I'm pretty sure it's February.
http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/02/22/gdc08- ... - soccerman90, on 02/22/2008, -1/+23hopefully this means they are dropping FC, gaining voice chat , and gaining a better service overall
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -7/+28Broke? You're an idiot. Nintendo is getting rich. Compare that to Sony and Microsoft, who are both losing money on their consoles.
- FatLoser, on 02/23/2008, -1/+22That's why it's called PAY and play...
- glimp7, on 02/22/2008, -1/+21"Nintendo initiative to avoid misleading consumers into thinking they can buy games that can be played entirely free when they cannot." Very confusing.
- burrgrinder, on 02/23/2008, -1/+21Lest we not forget that online consoles allows them to push out buggy games and then offer bugfixes and updates after the fact. It's one bad habit they learned from the PC industry.
I kind of liked it better when they knew they couldn't screw up and had to test their game. - stevea1210, on 02/23/2008, -2/+22Are you still talking about a game console here?
- Supernova36, on 02/23/2008, -0/+19Well I'm glad to see you're giving it a chance.
- cubbiesx, on 02/22/2008, -2/+21Maybe it's like old school arcades, $.25 to play a game of "Ice Climber".
- smilf, on 02/23/2008, -0/+19That is one hell of a game, still alot of people playing it today.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+18http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress.com/2008 ...
- ZephyrNinety, on 02/22/2008, -9/+26If it doesn't suck, I'd pay a reasonable price. LIVE is more than worth it. If they do just as well, fine.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+16Once again Nintendo makes an announcement with no details.
I would wait for more news until we start panicking. - colincornaby, on 02/23/2008, -1/+15Sounds like Nintendo is building something like XBox Live. It would be nice if they would just directly say that instead of all this marketing mumbo jumbo.
- jlebrech, on 02/23/2008, -1/+15This is probably just for a MMO style subscription service for certain games.
- maduin, on 02/23/2008, -1/+14Now they'll just have two tiers of online service, which is great. I'd gladly pay for the ability for online communication, lobbies, leader boards, tournaments and zero friend codes and so on and so forth. And if I didn't feel like paying to play I'd just use the regular NWFC and go bare bones online.
- sleepyjjk, on 02/22/2008, -12/+25My first reaction was "NOOOO"
But then.. well, I guess it would be okay if more online games got introduced and online play was more enjoyable.
The tradeoff is probably worth it. - soccerman90, on 02/23/2008, -4/+17Hopefully this means nintendo will drop FC's and replace them with gamertags, give us voice chat, and make it a better service overall. If they dont, and still charge, ill be pissed
- mywhitenoise, on 02/22/2008, -2/+15Where the hell did you get the assumption of nixing the friend code system?
- Shweeeb, on 02/23/2008, -3/+15People are overreacting....
"Today, during a GDC presentation, Nintendo's Takashi Aoyama announced a new EXPANSION to Nintendo's Wi-Fi services called Wii Pay & Play."
Geez. It's just like those people who said: "I have to pay for the internet browser now?" - Betaflame, on 02/22/2008, -1/+13Since when is Kotaku not reliable?
- trivialmaggot, on 02/23/2008, -0/+11pardon my asking, but isn't that what Xbox LIVE does?
/doesn't have an Xbox - ElwinRansom, on 02/23/2008, -2/+12"If, instead, Nintendo is getting a big head, and even bigger nuts, and begin charging for play that would have normally been free (SSBB for example), then they're going to lose at least this fan who has owned just about every Nintendo system there has been."
I agree. This is ridiculous, especially considering how much money they have been raking in the last few years with the DS and Wii. - STKD, on 02/22/2008, -10/+20And that would work. If they had actual games worth playing online.
- ShugNinx21, on 02/23/2008, -1/+11Well, when Nintendo finally has an online service that is as good as Xbox Live then they can consider charging for it. Right now Nintendo's online gaming service isn't even up to par with xbox live on the original xbox.
- dancerobots, on 02/23/2008, -4/+14I miss not reading that comment
- winmywii, on 02/23/2008, -1/+10All I have to say is that somebody needs to bring back SEGA channel.
- sanman, on 02/23/2008, -4/+12size matters
and
all your base are belong to us - Spyderman5853, on 02/22/2008, -3/+11This is dugg because the people need to know, but someone better start talking details soon.
- merreborn, on 02/23/2008, -4/+12Online services cost money to update and maintain.
Xbox live is pretty solid evidence that gamers are okay with that fact. - teamparadox, on 02/22/2008, -5/+13free yes...crap yes...
- DigTheDoug, on 02/23/2008, -0/+8That's awesome that you got Firefox to work on your Wii. I'm sure you will tell us what version on Linux you have on there supporting it as well?
