- jackal27, on 10/11/2007, -2/+77Why WOULDN'T there be another Zelda game in development? It has to be their top grossing series at the moment, it would only make sense that they would have a new one fresh on the tail of the last one. Does that mean it'll be out in a year? Even two? Probably not. We were all hearing rumors of Twilight Princess directly after (if not sooner) the release of Wind Waker, and they had a trailer out by the next year, but it still didn't get released until just LAST year. So don't start humping Miyamoto's leg just yet.
- betterth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33Exactly.
In other news, bread is still square and tastes good with butter. Failing to see how Nintendo making Zelda for Nintendo is news. - maabus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24that's what they said about jesus.
- Blue_Eon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23You're right....we will bury you.
The fact is, is that yeah, Nintendo relies heavily on those three franchises, but think about it: How many games on the market are actually like those games AND actually do well? Very few. Mario is THE quintessential platformer and always has been. Zelda is the quintessential adventure game that very few games of the same genre can compete with it. Metroid is is really the only game of its kind in that it's a first person adventure....not just a run of the mill FPS like Halo..
So, the reason why Nintendo can get away with making Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games is because there are very few games on the market like them and Nintendo does those games very well. The other games you mentioned are carbon copies of thousands of other games on the market. The Nintendo franchises, while being used for years and years, are distinctly unique....especially amongst the thousands of mediocre FPS, racing, and "Thug Life" games. - skywake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19so Nintendo is milking their franchises while Sony and Microsoft are coming up with "new stuff" all the time including Gran Turismo and GTA?...... and you think "Nintendo fanbois" are going to digg you down for being anti-Nintendo?

My world now makes no sense!
As for the article, this isnt really new news. I remember hearing about this right after Twilight Princess launched. - guywhodoesstuff, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15A Wii exclusive Zelda game would be nice, one that really utilizes the Wiimote in an original way instead of half-using it because it needs to work on the GC as well.
- MouseCircus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10A new Zelda has been in development for quite some time now. Shortly after Twilight Princess was released, an interview was conducted where Aonuma(or maybe it was Miyamoto) stated that the next Zelda began development about a year before Twilight Princess was completed. He also stated that the next Zelda will be a departure from the usual Zelda formula. They plan on doing something really different with the series.
Taking that into consideration, we now know that it's been in development for at least a year and a half.
I'd provide a reference/source, but it is no longer part of the Twilight Princess article in Wikipedia. I'm too lazy to bother checking the page's edit history, but if you don't believe me, feel free to look through it. The name of the section where they discuss the new Zelda, if I remember correctly, was called "Zelda Wii." - TheG2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Personally, I don't wanna stand the entire 80 hours it's going to take me to beat the game...
- doshindude, on 10/11/2007, -8/+17Wii Balance Board Zelda anyone?
- outbreakofevil, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11You sir are an idiot. Go back to playing Halo and the thousands of games like it.
- plhearn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The same can be said about Halo 3 and MGS4 for xbox or FFXIII for ps3, but at least wii is coming out with original stuff like the wii board.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Apparently Nintendo weren't happy with sales in Japan, although worldwide three copies were sold for every four consoles. I guess they just have very high standards
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7They didn't say they weren't going to make anymore, but they did blame poor sales on the fact that there weren't many wii's to be found then (and now)
- DarkXanthos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7The PS2? really? Funny because the Gamecube had better graphics than the PS2... So.... What was your point again? Using the PS2 as an example of something with "better" graphics than anything is just absurd.
- eightyd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7You do know that Twilight Princess was developed for the Gamecube and ported to the Wii, not the other way around, right?
- TheG2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Twilight Princess sold poorly? What?!?
Maybe you meant Wind Waker? - dylantp20, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Sorry if you think Nintendo really has 3 games that "make the system" I'm not the real fanboi with clouded judgment. As far as games released by Nintendo we've got Excite Truck, Wario Ware, Battalion Wars 2, Animal Crossing (Wii), Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn, Smash Bros Brawl!, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Strikers Charged, Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Trauma Center: New Blood, That's not by far even the complete list of games that look good or are already out and worth playing that Nintendo has made alone.
Now on to 3rd Party, Beautiful Katamari (that's right on wii.....won't be seeing this one on ps3!) Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, Brothers in Arms: Double Time, Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers, The Godfather: Blackhand Edition, Need for Speed ProStreet, Need for Speed Carbon, No More Heroes, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Soul Calibur Legends.
Again not a complete list just what I'm excited about, as you can see that's a lot of games.....take your fanboi blinders off dude. - NikoKun, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I suppose this isn't much of a surprise... But hey, I always love a good Zelda game. Although I seem to remember Miyamoto saying something about future Zelda games, not being as traditional as the old ones. I'm sure they'll still be good.
- plucas, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I thought you were joking until I saw that referenced at the bottom of the article. "Imagine controlling Link with the Balance Board and have him replicate your movements." I'm no hater of the balance board, but I can't see it being used too well with Zelda.
- mrRB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6What sucks is that you used the word "fanbois" seriously.
- opiv421, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Well this is good to know, nobody was expecting another Zelda game.
- Cyberbladewolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Well that's a lame reason. For all you know the balance board could be one of the greatest things ever added to Zelda. I doubt it, but of course everyone doubted the Wii Remote at first too. Don't knock it till ya try it.
- jeanjean, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I guess it's just me getting too old or something. But I long for the good old days with zelda1 and zelda3 when there used to be some real challenge in the game. Put in two modes or something, one for the casual player and one for the old fart if that's what it takes. I really liked twilight princess, but I honestly didn't die a lot of times playing it, and all puzzles seemed obvious from the start.
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Nintendo demands 100% tie-in
- KingBabi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3This is odd, because I saw an IGN interview with Miyamoto and he explicitly says that while there is the possibility for a game in the future, there is currently no work being done.
- championchap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They have indeed, unfortunatly I cant seem to find the article anywhere or id link to it it for you.
I think it must have hit digg because i dont seem to go elsewhere for my gaming news anymore.. I think they said something about going in a new direction with the series graphically. Pretty curious to know how that pans out. I actually loved the look of the Wind Waker and welcome another new style with open arms. - Tikkimann, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4same. They got the wiimote to work, but I don't see how they'd use it.
- Klarth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I guess the fact that every single Zelda game is COMPLETELY ***** DIFFERENT escaped you. Oh okay then.
"God I wish there weren't so many James Bond novels. Get a new ***** idea, Ian Fleming!" - QueEsAmor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Does Madden define consoles too? If you're going to talk about games that define consoles, try not to name multi-platform games. GTA, Oblivion and all those Tom Clancy games would fall under that category.
- shadowfox6, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2yeah, sure why not, finalfantasy is now 13 not counting the spinoffs , so to all people saying its 20 yrs old, if its not wanted then it would have stopped long ago, 20yrs should be an advantage not a disadvantage.
its great news anyway although well have to wait atleast 2 more years before we can play it & im being optimistic. - powlol, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Just curious, but where is that interview. Not trying to be an ass, but i guess i missed it. I had no idea that they had conformed another game was already in development.
- TheGeek27, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3In other late breaking news: Ocean reported to be wet, salty.
- psykiv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The latter
- michaeljh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Add to the fact that Nintendo doesn't milk their franchises. Each of those franchises went through a legendary transformation when they jumped to 3D. Hell, Metroid went from side scroller to FPS and in all of the franchise the transformations were bloody brilliant and still maintained quality!
- firemaker103, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Try it with only three hearts.
- untzboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Where. The *****. Is my DONKEY KONG???????
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The hell with you. Blocked.
- CLShortFuse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the gamecube died when the Wii came out. Mostly all Cube games in development were moved to the Wii.
- JordanM85, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wii hasn't even had a true Zelda yet, TP was the GC release.
- BattleStar47, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Actually this might work, but only in a limited sense. Like if you were riding eponia, you could use the balance board to lean and joust.
- heavystone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It was only a matter of time. Did people really think there would not be another?
- mkriss5681, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1With all nintendo systems (except SNES) there are usually two Zelda games. One in the begining of the systems life and one towards the end.
- Linh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I enjoyed TP. It was a good balance. I struggled only with one boss because I forgot about the whole auto target feature.. haha. I was disappointed in Ganon though, mainly because I beat the Cave of Ordeals already.
- dinostabOMG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's hard not to be skeptical but Miyamoto has seldom let us down.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The only game that applies to your naming rules is the Minish Cap.
Nice try though - aceallways, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree the game was fairly easy.
Could have used more of a challenge. - harpwn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, Minish Cap is a proper noun.
Return of Link
A Link to The Past
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Twilight Princess
Wind Waker
four swords adventures
Oracle of seasons
oracle of ages.
None of those apply. - CLShortFuse, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1um... Miyamoto confirmed they were working on a Wii-ONLY Zelda a few week before the Wii launched. He said Wii-ONLY since he knew fans wanted something that wasn't a port of a GameCube game and fully exploited the wii's capabilities.
- quado, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yay! You know a new Zelda is coming a little too soon when some of us still haven't beaten Twilight Princess.
Or maybe thats just because I suck. -
