How come you can't turn on your Wii to play a GameCube game and navigate to start the GameCube game using just the GameCube controller?
Why can't I exit a GameCube game without having to turn off the Wii console?
Why are my VC games stretched on my widescreen? (FYI: 360 Live Arcade games automatically put bars on the sides when in widescreen mode)
Where's the promised USB storage support?
Why can't I download game demos on my Wii?
Why do I have to use my phone to chat with my friends when playing an online game? (too busy working on that Wii Fit scale instead of a headset?)
Hell, why can't I even see when my friends are on their console and chat with them even?
Why did a game like Strikers already bring Nintendo's online servers to their knees when it was first released in both countries? What does this mean for blockbuster titles like Brawl?
Thanks for the clock Nintendo...can't wait for the next update in another 6 months. - bovester, on 10/10/2007, -4/+61You let me know when hard drive became hyphenated...
- spoiled1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+46Really?
Like typing words and stuff? - loconet, on 10/10/2007, -3/+43Because contrary to popular belief, technology is not created with ***** magic pixie dust!
I am not a Nintendo fanboy, I've never really own a Nintendo system before, but I am a software engineer and I am very familiar with launching big scale projects. It takes ***** time people! It has to be designed, tested, redesigned, tested again (repeat cycle 10x times), get pass marketing and finance, manufactured, etc, etc. Simply put, it is not magic. Releasing all those features at once would be a support nightmare for them. I'm sure it's not "that" big of a problem for a big company such as Nintendo but they don't want to ruin what they have going right now so the rather play it conservative and release bit by bit (no pun intended and I bet there is a business case for it too). - MatchStick, on 10/10/2007, -5/+39meh, let me know when it supports a usb hard-drive.
- JonLatane, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22Um... why would you get a dongle? The Wii already has Bluetooth built-in.
- cyberwarriorx, on 10/10/2007, -9/+28Now they just need to add support for bluetooth keyboards. Then I can use my wireless apple keyboard.
- danielrh9, on 10/10/2007, -11/+29I sincerely wish some of you would stop bitching about what the Wii does and doesn't do. If it interests you, buy it. If it doesn't, don't. There's no need for you to go running into every comment section and board thread you see to bitch and whine about what you can do on the 360 that you can't do on the Wii. Shut the ***** up already and go play your coveted 360 and leave us who actually enjoy the Wii the ***** alone.
- icantdrawanime, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15This guy found an added parental control that asks if you want to allow "User to User communication"
who knows, maybe this is an indication that a voip system is on its way...
http://blogs.ign.com/AtownKED/2007/08/07/62576/ - ltkerr0r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Probably has to do with the game "Boogie" that just came out the same day as the update. The game requires a USB mic so this update enabled USB for that.
- diblasio, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18"It could be good in the future, but for now..."
Pretty much sums up how I feel about the Wii in general these days. :( - Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15I'll vouch for the testing part. I am a Software Quality Engineer specializing in Performance and Load Testing. Most companies underestimate demand for online services. Most developers assume that their code will be sufficient. Sure, they unit test, but take that code out of the development environment and invite 10,000 or 100,000 people to use that code. Sure, Microsoft is doing fine with it TODAY. But Microsoft has years of experience with distributed applications.
Nintendo does not.
It will take time for Nintendo to bridge the gap, and if they do not close on it shortly they will suffer the demise of the Dreamcast. - MonsterChaOS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This will be very useful when it actually works with the browser.
- geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10"The Gamecube hardware cannot interface with any of the Wii's hardware, thus this is physically impossible."
This is just plain wrong. The Wii has a software emulator for the GameCube, but the problem is the hardware (from what I can tell) basically reboots itself using GameCube firmware. What would need to happen is to add a "Supervisor" that controlled the GameCube's OS, but that's a *****-ton of work. So while it'd definitely be very nice, it's probably a long ways off (if ever). This goes for a lot of GameCube things as well; the Wii firmware doesn't recognize the existence of the controllers at all, but the emulator for the virtual console games apparently does (and the VC emulator is apparently much less of a resource hog and can actually run from within the Wii's firmware).
This is what happens when you rush things out the door. Nintendo should have waited until both the developers were ready with some good titles and until they had all of the kinks worked out. But, even with little oversights and caveats, it's still a very nice console. - jeffeb3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10it's not a bloated PC though. There is no background OS. The name of the game for optimization is low level control. obfuscating the game just to add a "get home" button is retarded.
I although, a press on the home button could trigger an interrupt, which I can only assume the processor would respond to. But would the gamecube game be OK with being paused without being emulated? I suppose the home key could just reset it, but that'd be more annoying. - MrSidnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Paku, check out

I had some problems with my connection, and found the answer to be the broadcast channel:
--Change the channel that your router broadcasts on.
By default, most routers broadcast on channel 6. Change your router's channel setting to 1 or 11, as those do not overlap with other channels. Router "Channel" settings are typically found in the "Wireless Settings" area of your wireless router's setup utility. For information on accessing your router's settings, click here ( http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/routers/en_na/routerIndex.jsp )to select the brand name and model number of your router (if available), or consult the owner's manual for your router. - loconet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Nintendo is behind the xbox?
- br0ck, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Strikers online works perfectly. Perhaps there were minor launch day issues, but they've scaled up and everything works fine. Can you even find a single complaint in the Strikers or Wii Technical forums at http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/ ? Anyway, maybe you could consider Strikers and server beta test that will be used to get all the bugs out and be ready for the Brawl launch.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10im in yourz diggz dikgzing u down
- paku, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9My complaints (in case someone from Nintendo's support reads digg):
Wii Shop will die in the middle of a connection, or timeout trying to connect, locking up, and force me to cold-boot the Wii. This is after I've tested the connection with the News, Weather, and Internet Channel.
Everybody Votes will fail to connect, before and after I tested the network connection with all the other channels (except the Shop channel).
The friend-code system. Seriously, there is not one person on the planet who likes this, and it's killing my love for the Wii. Isn't there a better way to insure the safety of children when developing a online community (have to call in to get an activation code for online services)? - loneBoat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Do I have to put a wrist-strap on my keyboard now, in case I accidentally let go while flailing it?
- teh_techie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It glows like that when there is a message, either a system message or a message from a friend that's in your wii address book.
- TooEarly, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5if you get lucky you might be able to read the article. but if not this is what it says:
You might be able to use a keyboard, go and try it and tell us. - lqqkout4elfy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That's how the Dreamcast died.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I dunno, but that sounds like some defensive thing lol. I got my wireless USB Microsoft Keyboard to work. If a wireless keyboard works, I'm pretty sure a lot of models can as well :P
- ogryn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Tell Adobe to update their SDK's from version 7 then...
- Langford, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9It would be nice to start a Gamecube game with the Gamecube controller and nothing else, but I can't say that I care any about the other stuff you mention. Any feature is nice of course, but I didn't buy my system under the delusion that it had any of that other stuff.
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -16/+21im in yourz wii typin wordz
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Excuse me, boss, I need this Friday off. "Why?" Because a video game is coming out, ugh, duh. Everyone knows that.
- naio, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7It's hardware independent, you moron.
- Shadow503, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The above comment fixed it for my friend, he was having the exact same problems. You or your neighbors probably have a 2.4ghz wireless phone.
- knetworx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5And yet, the Wii is about to pass the 360 in sales.....
- vypergts, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I agree, the friend code system really blows and is something which needs fixing on the DS too.
- knetworx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Then why not just go buy a GameCube if it bothers you that much. $30 (GC) < $250 (Wii). I bought my Wii to play Wii games, and I see the GC compatibility as a bonus, not a hindrance.
- Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The OLD bluetooth keyboard from Apple didn't play nice with the PC or anything else. Did Apple change that with the new version ? ? ? I highly doubt it.
- aNoble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I assume this means that future Wii Ware games will be able to use the keyboard. Which could also open Wii Ware up to a lot more than games.
- Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Anybody know which keyboards are supported. The page indicated that "only certain models will work"
- R3Dirkulous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I agree, must games have bigger scale problems the same time frame as a luach..remember halo 3 beta madness?
- ogryn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have the connection settings in my current house in Position #2. The update reset it to #2, so I had to go back in and select the 'Use This Connect' button, then all was well again :)
- ahsteele, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Your comment was relevant and made sense right up until the Dreamcast comment. According to VGChartz Nintendo already has sold more Wiis than Sega ever sold Dreamcasts.
- MrSidnet, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Tried my BenQ x700, worked fine. Too bad about the lack of Opera support. Yet.
- edru, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4yeah but at least the ***** nintendo adds is optional.
- lokai, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4If you are so unhappy with the Wii, you could always just sell it to someone else who would enjoy it more. Give it time. Hopefully things will improve somewhat down the line. Some people are happy with the Wii just the way it is. My girlfriend won't always give me head every damned time I want, but I still enjoy being with her and for what she does do. I suppose that I should just complain to her that she isn't doing anything right and then kick her to the curb, eh?
- Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4WIRELESS? SERIOUS?
You mean the kind that have a wireless RF dongle? - danielsan1701, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You mean !!M.
- DinX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5http://www.gamernode.com.nyud.net:8080/News/3582-New-Wii-update-allows-use-of-keyboard-sorta/index.html
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It tells you right in the manual that this is not supported and yet you still act surprised.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Keyboard support is really cool. I've sent messages like crazy today lol. It's a shame that it doesn't work in the Internet Channel, because that is what really matters lol. Surfing youtube on the Wii is good, but with a keyboard.. AWESOME. Maybe next time.
I get this feeling that Nintendo would have to negociate with Opera or something in order to get keyboard functionality to work in the opera browser. - Eddible, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3***** Halo...
- directive0, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4That hurt but it was oh so true. Thanks for saying it for us. These seem like small items, but they are the little details that make or break a user experience.
