- MSUKate, on 11/02/2009, -3/+61Well, *****!
I can't even beat SM 3!! - inactive, on 11/02/2009, -1/+48In related news:
Sonic now reduced to blowing the landlord to make rent. - rocknog, on 11/02/2009, -2/+47Eh, I can forgive him for that. After all, there's that huge pit in world 8 where you have to land on an almost microscopic bit of land and then jump over another pit. For years, I was convinced that jump was physically impossible.
- rpgguy1o1, on 11/02/2009, -2/+46world 8 is tough dude, don't beat yourself up about it.
- kylescousin, on 11/02/2009, -4/+38Are you for real?
Super mario 1 can be finished in minutes. - danxmason, on 11/02/2009, -2/+35Has anyone ever beaten super mario 1? I fail at mario
- riverstyx, on 11/02/2009, -2/+33"Lost Levels" was the hardest one back in the day.
- Slinden, on 11/02/2009, -1/+27The article says that Nintendo Power was "willing to bet that this is ONE of the hardest games in the series." Get it right before you mislead people into getting the wrong idea.
- T8erT0T, on 11/02/2009, -2/+25No "That's what she said!"?
Is everyone feeling alright today? - yocouchdigga, on 11/02/2009, -1/+21This is going to be an awesome month for gaming.
- Entroper, on 11/02/2009, -0/+19Damn The Wizard and Nintendo Power for making warping "cool".
It was years after my NES started collecting dust that I realized how to get the most out of games by actually playing through them from start to finish instead of skipping huge sections. Super Mario World had the Special levels that gave the game a facelift, and it kept count of the number of exits that you cleared, giving you a star for clearing them all. That was when I saw the error of my warping ways, and when All-Stars came out, I found there were tens of hours of gameplay packed into SMB1/2/3 that I had never experienced.
Don't skip your games, kids. If you're done with a game once you "beat" it, either the game sucks, or you're doing it wrong. - mywhitenoise, on 11/02/2009, -0/+18how ironic.
- BlockBLX, on 11/02/2009, -3/+19My ass. Nintendo Power will say anything to promote Nintendo's games. There's no way this is harder than Lost Levels or SMB 3. I'm sure I'll beat this the day I get it, just as I did with the DS NSMB.
Which was awesome, by the way... but very easy. - rusty11, on 11/02/2009, -0/+16well yea if you have the whistle
- rocknog, on 11/02/2009, -1/+16Just from watching previews, some of the levels I've seen look pretty damn crazy, so I can believe it. Though on the other hand, it's hard for me to judge the difficulty of a Mario game anymore. I mean, I remember Mario 3 being hard as hell when I first played it, but these days, I can pretty much breeze through it.
- chaosblade77, on 11/02/2009, -1/+16Nintendo Power isn't directly affiliated with Nintendo anymore, they were sold to Future a while back.
Aside from that, numerous sources have commented on the game's difficulty. I doubt it will be harder than Mario 2 JP/Lost Levels, but I won't hold that against it considering that's one of the most punishing games I've ever played. If it's on par with Mario 3, that would be about perfect. - sHockz, on 11/02/2009, -0/+13they are underestimating my mario skills....
- Tkuebrich, on 11/02/2009, -1/+13There is no way this new one is harder than lost levels. I am still stuck on that last castle.
- zip000, on 11/02/2009, -1/+13I was the kid in my neighborhood that everybody came to for video game help, and I'll tell you the first one is tough!
Getting beyond the hammer brothers on 8-3 was a nightmare if I recall correctly. - BradOFarrell, on 11/02/2009, -0/+11Protip: Just run straight through the entire angry sun level. The level was designed to be ran straight through with only three or four well-timed jumps.
- bjs3171, on 11/02/2009, -0/+11Mario 1 is easy. even without warping, it's not too bad.
LOST LEVELS (Mario 2 in Japan), on the other hand. That game is near impossible. I've put hours upon hours into that game (recently) and still cannot beat it. Infact, until recently, I couldn't even get past World 2. - Shaflugi, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10Sure, you can beat it in minutes, but it takes hours of playing the game to ever actually get GOOD enough to beat it.
BTW, warpzones don't count. - ColonelSlanders, on 11/02/2009, -2/+12the ds game was fun but it was also pretty easy
more super mario 64 ds minigames please :) - Snoogs, on 11/02/2009, -1/+11Actually, I thought that to be a fitting use of the meme... I couldn't digg it myself, but I won't bury it.
- DelMonte, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9It's optional, and that's the point: by adding this mode they were able to make the game harder, while giving a chance to less skilled players to still enjoy the game.
- bjs3171, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9if you were a real mario player, you'd be in line on day one BECAUSE it's hard.
poser. - mixeao, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8Is it harder than this?
http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/674708/hardest_m ... - DJWilsonX, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8P hump mario's way to victory!
- dabestdefense, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8The tip that got me through the game was that the battle ship in World 8 was floating on dirty water, not lava!
You can swim right under, amazing!
Felt a bit like cheating, but it got me through to the end back then. - bjs3171, on 11/02/2009, -1/+8BOO THIS MAN!
warps are for pussies. - bjs3171, on 11/02/2009, -1/+8me neither. A friend and I sat down last year, boot to the grindstone, to try to beat the game in the Mario All-Stars version. I can't even imagine trying to play without infinite continues.
I'm still stuck on the last castle.
Untill last year, I had never gotten past World 2 or 3 and I can beat Mario 1 in about an hour with no warps. - Entroper, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Worlds 5, 6, and 7 were amazing. I loved how you climbed a tower in World 5 and ended up in the clouds, very creative design.
- Fleagleman, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6...and the princess will still be in another goddamn castle.
- riverstyx, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6Thats the one I played, in the all-stars super nintendo one. Honestly I tried for about a year then gave up.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6I had no problems with 3, never beat the first one though.
- reticulate, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6Sad but true.
- Langford, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Hardest? I dunno, we'll see. It will be hard to top the Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2 for difficulty.
- xeemo, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Harder than SMB2 japan? Uh oh. As long as it's fun it shouldn't matter though.
- jer2eydevil88, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Sega should sell the rights to Nintendo, Blizzard, Valve, or Microsoft so that a decent game based on those characters could emerge.
I left EA out on purpose because they put unpublicized DRM installation limitations on games like Spore and should go out of business for such practices. - Entroper, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5SMB1 World 8 is pretty much a marathon of tough situations. Every screen is dangerous -- not extremely difficult on their own, but you throw 30 of them together, and don't include a halfway point to start from when you die, and set the timer to 200, and you've got yourself one hell of a challenge. It makes the victory that much sweeter. :)
- rocknog, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4No way, I mean playing it through legitimately. I mean sure, in my younger days, when I was a naive, stupid kid, I would just play through the first two worlds so I could get both warp whistles and the cloud and then jump to world 8, but then later I realized I was skipping over so many great worlds - giant world, sky world, pipe world, etc. So now whenever I replay, I never use the warp whistle.
- Pxtl, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4The tank level was a popular place to burn a P-wing. You could fly over the whole thing.
- iconmaster, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4Miyamoto: Bring it.
- tusharpant, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5looks pretty interesting, I want to try it now
- dysonlu, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4SM 3 was amazingly long (if playing every stages, without using shortcuts) but very beatable. Played it while I was a teen, finished with 90-something lives, plenty of opportunities for 1-Ups.
- zip000, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4All these comments about SMB2 (lost Levels) makes me aware that I have never played that one!
Off to the Virtual Console!
(I actually probably have the ROM somewhere, but it's not the same playing with an emulator really) - EdgarG8, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Lost Levels was a bitch. I passed it on the Gameboy Color but I think the difficulty was reduced.
- bjs3171, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4i hope you have a few hours to devote to getting past world 2.
- BradOFarrell, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3I'm sure only the later levels and side levels are "hard", like how in Mario 3, there was usually a harder world and an easier world and you could choose which of the two you beat to move forward. It's not necessary to beat all the levels to progress through the game. Also, if you die 8 times it helps you get through the level.
