- Paroparo, on 10/11/2007, -12/+73I really hope those screenshots are extremely work-in-progress, or something went seriously wrong with transfering them from one format to another. We've been promised the game would look much better than the original and go way beyond the visuals of Halo 2, but those looks possibly worse even worse than the original Metroid Prime. Now I know graphics isn't all that matters in a game and that the original MP really did look very nice, but we consumers should never be satisfied with being promised something a product is going to be "completely awesome", and then getting something that is "very good five years ago."
The news about the content seems very promising though, especially the shots with Samus swinging in mid-air with her grapple beam. The large amount of unique looking characters seems to indicate there will be lots of other characters in the game, not just Samus by herself roaming around ruins. - pizzatsf, on 10/11/2007, -3/+56Nah, they just have to tighten up level 3.
- nonpareil, on 10/11/2007, -2/+41If the 'cube could pump out RE4, there's no reason that the Wii should be producing this. Jeez, these look more like DS screens.
- Zeldafreak104, on 10/11/2007, -8/+40who killed the graphics?

Then you've never played Goldeneye or a N64 before. - OgnodoD, on 10/11/2007, -12/+26"I really feel sorry for wii fans. I mean I think its clear at this point that this is all the wii is capable of producing."
No, it's not. These are a few less-than-stunning screenshots and proof of nothing more. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers Brawl look very nice in the graphics department. Now, if they come out with a new trailer and it looks really bad, then that's something else, but it still won't be because the Wii couldn't handle more. - OUChevelleSS, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Anti-aliasing anyone?
- Lynx34, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I agree with the poor image quality. Previously released screenshots are way less smudgy and jaggy. Those looked damn nice, and in motion things always look a lot better too.
These were some shots released last september...

Same deal with Joystiq this morning.
A handful of absolutely crappy (read: someone screwed with them intentionally or by mistake) screenshots mean jack *****. Have you never seen the clips or real screen shots yet?
Uhg. - PigThief, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Galaxy looks good because Nintendo is developing it, plus they have written a bunch of shader FX for it which is one of the wii hardware's strong points.
Indeed, don't you hate those cheaters at Nintendo? Shame on them for using all the Wii's capabilities to make a game look good; after all, we know that the Wii just can't produce great graphics!
Your logic makes me want to die. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+16Looks low-res to me. I don't think it's the game's fault, I think it's the fault of the screenshots. I mean, the trailer didn't look nearly so bad. But of course, fan boys are gonna have a field day with this regardless. Hey, but it's coming out on my birthday, that's kinda cool.
- OgnodoD, on 10/11/2007, -14/+25What bugs me is that several game journalists who saw it last year said that the game looked REALLY good. These weren't just Nintendo-loving journalists either. I'm inclined to believe them, so this tells me that someone at Nintendo was being an idiot when they picked these screenshots to represent the game. They need to get a trailer out, NOW.
- kethraal, on 10/11/2007, -14/+24"I mean I think its clear at this point that this is all the wii is capable of producing."
No -- at this point, it may be all that some developers are capable of producing (that I do not doubt) -- but the Wii is not exactly a hardware weakling. It's got:
750CL-derivative PowerPC chip, running at 729MHz (could be an evolved 750CXe, but likely based on the 750CL design)
A custom ATI chip, "50% more powerful" than the Gamecube's GPU
88MB RAM (not too bad for a console)
It's definitely more powerful than the Xbox, and although it's not up to the level of the 360 or the PS3, it's certainly got enough computing muscle to turn out better graphics than we've seen so far.
As with _any_ system, it takes time for developers to learn how to optimize for the hardware. The graphics you see here are probably produced by a relatively unoptimized engine. The architectural similarity to the Gamecube is a double edged sword -- while a 360 developer can't simply recompile an Xbox-optimized engine for the 360, the Wii's Gamecube heritage _does_ allow that sort of "rough and ready" port. As a result, some developers opt to rush a game out before it's ready, simply slapping a couple fixes on a an aging engine, adding the occasional motion blur/bump-map, and releasing it as "a Wii game" (when in reality, it's not much more than a Gamecube game running on a Wii.) Metroid, being a high-revenue franchise, has probably fallen victim to this -- Nintendo wants to get MP3: Corruption onto the shelves (and into the shopping carts of gamers) as soon as possible, thus they probably just ported over the same engine used for the Metroid Prime games on the Gamecube.
A year or so from now, we will start to see new, original, fully-optimized titles appearing -- and I would be quite amazed if they didn't blow away MP3C graphically. If "Shadow of the Colossus" can look as good as it did on the PS2, it's not unreasonable to imagine a good dev house putting together some truely beautiful games in the future. - TheTjalian, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12@kethral
The Wii uses a Power PC Architecture. The Numbers could be exactly the same and the Wii would take XBOX to school.
Anyway, this looks worse then the E3 demo last year, so I'm putting this down to bad selection. - EDmAN, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Hey August 20th is my birthday too. I thought that was pretty cool also...
- PigThief, on 10/11/2007, -6/+15Even the mighty wiimote has been found to not work properly or accurately.
Really? Please explain, since I haven't had a single problem with it. Otherwise, quit pulling FUD out of nowhere. - EDmAN, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Psst... Retro is not lazy, look at MP an MP2 they looked great on GC. Maybe the delay was more about controls and content than graphics would that be so bad?
- bittermang, on 10/11/2007, -9/+17The pictures just look really lossy to me. It's not the engine, it's the JPEG.
But then again, I look at lossy horrible JPEGs all day, so that might have something to do with my perception. - dragon76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Metroid Prime and Echoes looked fantastic, even today they look fantastic. Outside of the great looks they were superb games. So far Zelda, Paper Mario and Corruption have been GameCube ports. The gameplay has made the first two stellar sellers and if this is what they are doing when they're just porting GC games, I can't wait for games developed for the Wii exclusively.
- EDmAN, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11swrostmore, just because the Wii doesn't look as good as the 360 and PS3 doesn't mean that everything on the system will look like crap. Let's face it, if it doesn't shine like it has cellophane wrapped around it, or look like it was dipped in oil you don't think it looks good. Of course that's how you like all your men... I mean games..

- swgc5, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Dear god those screens are ugly.
- EDmAN, on 10/11/2007, -11/+17Wow, you guys are way more talented than me, because I can't see enough of anything in these screens to judge the games graphics. Besides aren't graphics based on a lot of things we can't see unless it's in motion? I've seen a lot of pretty screen shots where the game ended up looking like crap, and a lot of ugly screen shots and the game ended up being very pretty and fluid.
It's not that I mind a person prejudging a game by it's screens that's your choice, but how the heck do you even see anything in these screens to judge? No landscapes, no good enemy character models, nothing, these screens are just poor choices to show off a game. You can't even see if the lighting is decent because everything is dark. - Frisbinator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I love it how most everyone on the internet bulletin boards pulling for Nintendo were harping on the price of the system, and now that they're realizing some of the consequences (inferior graphics) they (like a LOT of people here) are complaining about 'em! You people crack me up.
- BuckleButt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'd rather have smooth first person control with Cube-like graphics, than clunky Red Steel-esque control with 360-like graphics.
- Maverick28, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5the graphics obviously arent that bad its probally just low quality pics we all have seen the e3 video no reason to worry
- snazzypadgett, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10...........are you serious? It's coming out on your birthday, too?
That was the first thing I noticed about the release date--8/20 is my birthday too :) - AWBoy666, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5http://www.duggmirror.com
- g33kfu, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Wow! What are the odds? (hint: about 1/365)
< /sarcasm> - EDmAN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+45 not so great screens come out and people are ready to tear this game apart. Look if it looks as good as MP2 and in !6:9 I will be happy. MP2 was a great looking game with nice textures for GC. If you don't believe me those of you that have it plug it in your Wii and play it in progressive mode. The game looked great for last gen and up until these 5 screens everything for MP3 has looked a little better than 2. I really don't think Retro stopped half-way and said, "hey lets go back and make everything suck graphically now" especially when everyone said it was running at 60fps. MP3 will look better than it did at E3 and better than MP2, that's good enough for me considering the Wii isn't a whole lot more powerful than the cube, and the cube wasn't a bad system in technical terms itself. What we have here is over hyped anxiety: where people were expecting the game to all of a sudden look like it was coming out for the PS3 or Xbox 360 just because Nintendo decided to take the time to put a little more polish on the game. PLEASE STOP
- Derfus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4it needs to be a side scroller or 3rd person of some kind, FPS's are lame-o
super metroid on the snes was much better than the metroid on gamecubes - Dracker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5It seems that Wii is sorely lacking hardware antialiasing. I've seen jaggies all over the place, and not even just from these screens. Jaggies in a lot of games. Twilight Princess for example was plagued by them.
What makes this even more boggling is that I can name some Cube games that looked much better than this. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! for example. Sure, the graphics were cartoony but they were smooth and the FPS didn't suffer at all from it, even with MANY objects, karts, and items on screen and moving.
Wii can do better than this. This looks like the original Prime, if not worse. - jdillingham, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I'll probably still check it out, and I don't think the graphics are horrible, but they aren't any better than the GC.
- DeepFreezed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4wow, is that it?
how sad is that? you get what you pay for I guess.
if this game was on any other console, it would have be blasted for being sub-par. When did the wii standards go so low? - strifeprime, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4This game is going to be awesome. I know Retro will create a beautiful and living world for us to explore. High rez textures are all well and good, but art design matters much more to me, and Retro has proven to me in the past that they have some excellent art designers.
- fallenone05, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6I thought all of you Wii gamers used to say "it's about having fun not graphics," seems that the sentiment is changing to "it's about graphics and fun" which is the sentiment that the true next gen systems can only offer.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Headshot
had to be said... - vd0man, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The most puzzling thing to me is that Metroid Prime on the GameCube looks so much better than these screens, and that came out in 2003.
Seriously, I put in Metroid Prime just to test out the backwards compatibility on my Wii and was stunned at how great MP still looks. Hell, other than being at a lower resolution I personally think the first MP looks better than what's been shown of Halo 3 so far.
Either Retro messed up bad or someone really screwed up capturing these screens. It's just really hard to believe MP3 is going to be a graphical downgrade from the first one. - swrostmore, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7because sales figures are a highly accurate indication of quality
- tektalk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Just wait until they unveil the Wii V.2.
- Radan, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Forgive me for this, but I just have to say it.
And what was it about Halo 3 having lousy graphics, again?
With that said, regardless of the graphics (which by judging of those screenshots are not that impressive, even if you disregard the low quality JPG files) the gameplay will hopefully be really satisfying, if they can squeeze out the full potential of the Wii controller, and really, who buys a Wii for the graphics anyway?
However, I really can't understand why Nintendo couldn't do the Wii some justice and give it a better graphic processor. Gameplay is more important, in all honor, but why can't we enjoy some stunning bump mapping and special effects at the same time? - kethraal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"The Wii uses a Power PC Architecture. The Numbers could be exactly the same and the Wii would take XBOX to school. "
I used to program for PowerPC everyday... I'm aware of how much it kicks the P3's ass :-D
But yeah -- that was kinda my point: it's got a much faster chip, and (depsite the lack of the 360's unified shaders, etc.) a pretty competent GPU.
The Wii should be able to produce much of the 360/PS3's eye candy (albeit at 480p) -- anti-aliasing, motion blur, depth of field, etc. are not beyond the GPU/CPU -- but they may well be beyond the capabilities of current devs. - EDmAN, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Hmmm... I think I will wait for some actual hands-on impressions of the game before judging the game by these screens. They don't look that great, but I wasn't really expecting the graphics to get much better than the GC version. Basically Retro said they were working on the lighting effects and the physics (ragdoll) as far as graphics are concerned when I read the last interview. I expect slightly better textures and 16:9 will be all the other visual improvements we'll see.. Wii is not a powerhouse, nor does it need to be to have great games.Hopefully the controls are what they are being hyped by Reggie to be, Metroid Prime 3 “will reinvent the control scheme for a first person shooter. It’s the closest you can get to PC control in a [console] game.” That's was his quote today.
- Heavy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Aaaaa the jaggies ooo the horror make it stop MAKE IT STOP!!
- Majin_Raditz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I hope they are still working on the graphics because I think MP:2 looked better on the cube.
- Redchannel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2At least the title screen looks pretty.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I played Metroid 3 at E3 personally, at the time it looked graphically identical to Metroid Prime (which I beat).
