- Harabeck, on 10/26/2009, -1/+83People give Wind Waker ***** just because of the graphics. Which is a damn shame, sure it was stylized, but it worked. And ignoring that really does an injustice to a great game.
- rocknog, on 10/25/2009, -2/+77I don't necessarily agree with the article's premise here. Certainly, the older Zelda games were harder, but at least part of that is because they were less refined than their newer counterparts. For instance, I'm currently playing Ocarina of Time again, and at least part of the challenge for me is simply that the controls and the camera simply aren't as smooth and precise as they are in the newer games.
And as for the story - well let's face it, in the original Zelda, there really wasn't much of a story at all - collect the pieces of the Triforce so you can beat Ganon and save Zelda. And even then there was no real in-game storytelling. On the other hand, I have to say Wind Waker had some of the best storytelling in a Zelda game, in my opinion. I mean, I know some people don't look favorably on it, but I mean, it's such a departure from the traditional Zelda tale - you're not some chosen hero, you're just a kid out trying to save your sister, and Hyrule has sunk beneath the ocean. Yeah, it turns more traditional toward the end, but still, that first part of the game was just incredible to me. - ArvickHero, on 10/26/2009, -6/+61Wind Waker had the best storytelling and ending of all the Zeldas
- Sornos, on 10/26/2009, -1/+54If you want good story telling, try Majora's Mask. Best in the series in my opinion for that reason.
- FallingDonkey, on 10/26/2009, -2/+42The Water Temple will be harder than the final boss in all the games. Book it.
- theGOG, on 10/26/2009, -3/+37I can't wait to see what the next 3D Zelda game is like, Twilight Princess was really fantastic in my opinion.
- skate3214, on 10/26/2009, -0/+30Next Zelda will be called, The Legend of Zelda: Water Temple.
- mattmacneil, on 10/26/2009, -1/+29Ocarina of Time gives me a strange feeling of extreme familiarity and comfort that most things do not.
- ChiffX, on 10/26/2009, -3/+30Too many people hate on Majora's Mask for no reason. I came back to it last year and it was fantastic and confusing.
- doshindude, on 10/25/2009, -4/+30I wouldn't say the Oracle games are in the "new generation" zelda category, if anything, I'd say they were the last of the "old generation" bunch. They were decently hard.
- ipwnall123, on 10/26/2009, -3/+24I actually prefered Wind Waker's graphics over OoT's graphics. I love that cell shaded style, and it really didn't get the credit it deserved.
- quamb, on 10/26/2009, -1/+18Yeah Wind Waker was pretty rad. Remember the hate spewed forth on that game due to it's art style, though it ended up being a AAA game - and the ending battle was just awesome.
And always will trust Nintendo at making games that are FUN.
Though regardless, it does seem Nintendo will always disappoint with a new Zelda. They set such a high bar when bringing Zelda to the next-gen with Ocarina of Time, and seemed to be following suit ever since, rather then pushing the industry forward.
Games now have become far more sophisticated in terms of structure, story, gameplay and the overall cinematic experience. See Uncharted 2, Gears etc or even Mirrors Edge. Can only imagine what a Zelda with those production values would be like. - skate3214, on 10/26/2009, -0/+16Majora's Mask had a good story and was certainly a challenging game (especially with the 3 day time limit) but there was one thing that I hated and that was the final boss\ending, you could literally defeat the last boss in less than 3 minutes if you used the fierce deity mask, couple that with a pretty boring ending sequence and I was quite disappointed to say the least, especially compared to Ocarina of Time's battle against Ganondorf, the atmosphere when you're battling him is AMAZING.
- chefjesus, on 10/26/2009, -0/+16I'm surprised at all the hate TP is getting. I've been playing Zelda games since the first one and TP is my third favorite one, right after WW and OOT. TP to me easily has some of the best dungeons the series has ever seen, and although it wasn't really anything new, the game was pretty much everything that made Zelda great rolled into one game.
- Colmillionaire, on 10/26/2009, -1/+13Actually, buried for not being truthful.
Twilight Princess was a good game. Simply said. No argument needed.
And please rephrase us as Zelda Fanboys. I think we are the most reasonable than any other fanboy =]. - Dinner, on 10/26/2009, -2/+13I came back to it last year too and enjoyed myself. MM had some really friggin' amazing concepts to it, and is probably unmatched in terms of atmosphere and story and stuff. But in a lot of other ways it's kind of an unfinished mess. I wish it were longer, and the many many side quests resulted in anything other than a-heart-piece-you-in-no-way-need-for-anything or a-mask-that-does-nothing (plus a very-exciting-journal-entry!).
- rand21althor, on 10/26/2009, -1/+10The deadliest enemy in Wind Waker was that fully grown pig on Outset Island. He dealt more damage than Ganondorf did, per attack.
- weister42, on 10/26/2009, -4/+13Ocarina of Time. They can just upgrade the graphics and I'd buy a Wii just to play it all over again.
Still missing 7 golden spiders... - rentmitchum, on 10/26/2009, -1/+10The idiots chanting "celda" back in the day were the ones who missed out on one of the best Zelda games ever made. Wind Waker was amazing, and I loved it.. It's right up there with OOT and LTTP for me.
As for the premise, I don't care much for the split.. the Oracle games were like Link's Awakening.. The Minish Cap was good but easier.. Don't trick yourself into thinking they haven't gotten easier in ways too.. I just played through LTTP and then Minish Cap and the Minish Cap is like a spiritual sequel to LTTP.. The difference is, there's always more ways to get hearts and less ways to die.. enemies are easier killed in Minish.. Same way with Twilight Princess, I think between TP and Wind Waker the difficulty dropped way down for TP.. TP is one of the easiest Zelda games I've played.. other than Phantom Hourglass, and that's only hard because of the annoying controls.. It doesn't add to the fun, it just makes it easier for casual ***** to play.. I want precise control over my character. It's ***** LINK, we're not using Sloppy McDaniels to save the world.. This is LINK, and I shouldn't jump off of things by accident as much as I do..
It's fine for something like Scribblenauts, it ***** up occasionally but it allows such a fun game idea to play out. Zelda was just plain better with normal controls, and it adds nothing to the experience for me. It's a gimmick. - Dinner, on 10/26/2009, -1/+10I don't know. I've really been struck by how easy the games are lately. It seems as though you just don't ever really need to take much damage. The enemies are easily beatable and the bosses generally require you to figure out exactly one thing (hint! it might involve the dungeon treasure) and do that three times. I get stuck on the puzzles, but the answer is usually, like...you failed to notice a little bee's nest that's behind a bush in one corner of the dungeon.
Maybe I only get this impression of increasing simplicity because I'm so used to the 3D Zeldas' style of control now, and don't have to endure that learning curve? Or maybe I'm only just now noticing that the whole series follows this kind of model.
I loved being in the universe of Twilight Princess, and getting cool ***** and sword techniques and stuff like that, but there needs to be more of a ramping-up of challenge, more in-depth side quests that *really* impact the game, maybe more upgrades/customizability to your equipment and skills.
Also, the Wii controls just pissed me off and felt awkward. You just flail the Wiimote randomly and Link swings the sword at his own pace; that adds nothing. Except aiming with the bow etc. was pretty cool.
I also fear that 'the game being filled by elements lifted directly from the older Zelda games' will get pretty played-out, pretty soon. Although I think I kind of liked how they pulled it off in TP (it's been a little while since I played). - ldkronos, on 10/26/2009, -1/+9"in the original Zelda, there really wasn't much of a story at all - collect the pieces of the Triforce so you can beat Ganon and save Zelda. And even then there was no real in-game storytelling."
Pffft. Are were even talking about the same game? I remember some awesome in game story telling that would make Shakespeare's jaw drop. Incredible lines like "It's dangerous to go along. Take this" and "Go up, up the mountain ahead". They are unparalleled in games today. Such emotion - Rockkybox, on 10/26/2009, -2/+9' What then, with our beloved Zelda series? It has been around for over 20 years now, surely it too has changed throughout the generations.'
No *****
To be honest I think the best zelda award would have to go to links awakening, really didn't take itself too seriously; but I'm probably just blinded by the fact the its the first one I played - chubbstar, on 10/26/2009, -1/+7yaaaa MORE KIRBY!!
- macmcraeart, on 10/26/2009, -2/+8surely we have changed more throughout the generations. i just don't have enough free time to sit in front of a game machine and collect skulltulas - like i once did.
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 10/26/2009, -1/+7Amen. I haven't played Ocarina of Time in a long time, but from what I remember Twilight Princess was definitely longer and not just a breeze through. It was different and the same then its predecessors all at once.
- untyl, on 10/26/2009, -0/+6Has it occurred to anyone out there that the reason older fans find the new Zelda's too easy is because we've been playing them for 10 years? Even the old ones are easy now, but it's painful to watch people new to the series play the new games, everything seems obvious to me, but not to them.
We've been trained. - rentmitchum, on 10/26/2009, -1/+7I think the article's split has a lot of flaws.. Oracle games were a lot like Link's Awakening.. Wind Waker was just plain amazing..
I think if there's a new gen of Zelda games, it'd start with TP and include the annoying stylus controlled ones. I never once traded in a Zelda game until Phantom Hourglass.. I got like 3/4ths of the way through and I couldn't stand it anymore. It's so much less precise and frustrating to lose the control over Link we've had for years with buttons and sticks.. ***** the new games.. I was so excited to have a DS Zelda, and it's a major disappointment because of the touch controls.
Now Minish Cap, that was easy, way easy compared to LTTP or something, but it was at least good like Wind Waker.. I hate the new DS games. - rentmitchum, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5It's hard to decide between all of them, but if I had to choose a Zelda game out of them, and it would be the only one I could ever play over again, I'd have to go with Wind Waker.. I fell in love with it. All the "Celda" haters either played it and ate their words, or they missed what I feel was the last GREAT Zelda game.
- bearcat8543, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5i had nightmares about the water temple. thanks for reminding me about something ive tried so hard to repress.
- miltank, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5Why nobody ever mentions Links Awakening is beyond me.
- ervinTE8, on 10/26/2009, -1/+6@Dinner
But taking great measures to collect all the heart pieces is half the fun! - bobthegreat1224, on 10/26/2009, -2/+6Twilight Princess took very few liberties with the franchise. It was a solid game, but it offered little that was new or fresh. It did have the shape-shifting, the double hookshots, and the frozen mansion level, but none of these were true departures in any real sense. A good game, but far from raising the bar the way I had hoped.
- YumYumTruck, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5I can't say I like how the article divides fans into new and old, I played wind waker first, and still thought Ocarina of Time was great. I've enjoyed all of the installments I've played, old or new.
Also, speaking of Wind Waker...
Am I the only one who really tried to get all of the sculpture things with the camera? - rand21althor, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5"The 10th enemy has the bomb"
- MorpheousMarty, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4I would like to see a Zelda game that focused a lot more on swordplay. With Wii motion plus we could have epic sword battles, not to mention make the boomerang cool again. I want a Zelda like the new Batman Arham game, with battle sections that are precise and rewarding. When I finish the next Zelda I don't want to feel I just hit an enemy's weak spot 3 times after rolling for 3 minutes; I want to feel I expertly responded to each advance until he makes his final fatal mistake. Seeing as they are making a much more action oriented Metroid game, it's only fair to give our old green hooded friend the same consideration.
- Shirt, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4Dude, yes. Hell, the TP water temple was harder than most of the rest of the game, even though it was nothing compared to OoT. I remember how hard of a time I had fighting Shadow Link, though it could have been because I originally played the game when I was like 9. Seems like I've never had that much trouble with it since my first play through, but still. I thought there was something wrong with the game because I just couldn't hit the *****.
- Dinner, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5But just imagine if there were anything, anything at all in the game that gave you a non-obsessive-compulsive reason for doing so!
I don't think this is a problem for Majora's Mask alone, either.... Though Twilight Princess *did* have one damn challenging part: the giant pit of enemies in the desert. But the reward for completing THAT is itself... pretty darn lame. - vashmyvindows, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4I beat the first Zelda when it was new, again and again. The sense of adventure was incredible. To this day, my favorite in the series is aLttP. Still, anyone who says Ocarina or Majora are better games than Wind Waker or Twilight Princess is being affected by nostalgia. That goes once for people who don't know why, and twice for people who say the earlier games have "better atmosphere" or "more expressive characters".
Each game has its own faults and regressions, but they're definitely becoming more refined over time. What is a game but storytelling, gameplay, and exploration? With each iteration of the series, those three points are becoming more accessible and mature. If that means an easier game, that's a hit I'm willing to take. - Colmillionaire, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5People like you are envisioned in us Zelda Fans minds as burning in hell.
- WraTH017, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5Two days meaning 48 hours? It's not a short game whatsoever... You didn't beat it in 2 days unless you played non-stop during your free time, with a guide, and with absolutely no intention of enjoying it.
- AManWithNoName, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4Majora's Mask was probably the most subtle of the stories as well. There's a whole lot of underlying story to it that you simply don't catch as a kid. There was an article a while back that talked about the Tower and its hidden meaning...Really impressive stuff.
- robwhite1979, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4I remember playing OOT /w my girlfriend at the time... We had been playing it for a few hours every evening together and within an hour of getting into that F#@$%!G water temple I was on my way to Walmart to buy the game guide (don't know why I didn't look it up online, probably dial up). It was even difficult with an illustrated guide... After it was done my g/f and I were like "let's just pretend that didn't happen so we can still pretend we're smart people...".
- doshindude, on 10/26/2009, -2/+5Yeah, I'd have to say the dividing line clearly starts at Phantom Hourglass...with it's retarded control scheme. I can't believe they ***** it up that much.
- MrFisty, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3And today's 'No *****, Sherlock' award goes to:
"The old generation consists of those who have been fans for over a decade, following along with every release. Then there are the new fans, joining the new generation within the decade." - insanekoz, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3@Shadic
I have to agree. Windwaker's core gameplay was awesome, but the difficulty was absolutely lacking. Was it even possible to die?
I first played it when it came out 6 years ago (hard to believe it's been that long) and my sentiments from when I first played it as a 12 year old have not changed. - restlessdesign, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3Truth.
- doshindude, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4I really preferred WW's graphics over TP's "Gears of Zelda" art style that ended up just looking gross to me. WW was the better game.
- farhanfarn, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3if anything tingle ruined windwaker for me
wtf why do i need to give you THOUSANDS of rupees for you to decode the maps YOU ***** EDIOT!!!! - ciano, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3I've beaten a good number of them, and LA is still my favorite.
- NoodlePDX, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3...f-ing water temples.
