- empeethree, on 02/09/2008, -3/+90It shouldn't cost 75 cents or more to play a video game at the arcade.
- LogicBomB, on 02/09/2008, -5/+82You can really tell who grew up with arcades and who grew up with consoles from the comments at engadget.
Those who grew up with arcades miss the human interaction, the embarassment of someone taking your money by kicking your ass. Lining up your quarters to get in line and take on mr. big stuff who's won 15 games in a row. It's a visceral experience and it's sorely lacking these days. It was a culture and now it's gone.
Those who grew up with home system simply think "why pay more?" and "why do I have to leave home to play games?". They just don't "get" the heart-pounding fun of loosing hours of your time with other people. Laughing, gaming and the thrill of pulling a perfect comeback from someone who had you beat. You don't have cheering with consoles. You just have a quiet bedroom and a headset. - Edrick, on 02/09/2008, -6/+42"You just have a quiet bedroom and a headset."
Which, you must understand, is simply preferable to some people.... - doshindude, on 02/09/2008, -13/+43arcades died in 1983 people....
- LogicBomB, on 02/09/2008, -2/+23I tend to agree but that's not their fault - inflation is a bitch. Even an arcade that's fully packed at most hours of the day could not afford to stay open when rent, electricity, etc cost as much as they do. Not to mention the cost of the machines. Sucks for us but it's not like it's their fault.
- theNazz, on 02/09/2008, -4/+23It won't be long before Karaoke bars turn into Rock Band bars where customers can sign up to play a specific song, instrument, and skill level... custom rock band instruments/drum kits, lights, contests, people literaly getting boo'd off stage... change is constant but making change requires adaptation. Adapt or die.
- NecroSexy, on 02/09/2008, -6/+23Translation: it felt good to be ripped off in the arcade.
- Tenareth, on 02/09/2008, -1/+15Only in America, they are/were still huge in other countries.
- daridave, on 02/09/2008, -8/+19boo-f*cking-hoo. Namco, just smell the coffee and start making GOOD games for Wii, and you'll see your profit stay up. Way up.
- Elderon, on 02/09/2008, -0/+11Thats over in japan so I don't know how much they charge to play, but over here in the U.S. most arcade machines i've seen are usually $1.00 or even higher. Now I can't speak for everyone, but thats way to ***** much.25c sure, 50c maybe, but come on a whole damned dollar to play for probably not even 5 minutes? no thanks.
They need to spend less time blaming Nintendo and more time blaming themselves for not bringing anything innovative to game machines. At least nintendo is continuing to evolve. Also helps if the people setting the game prices arn't all a bunch of greedy *****. - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+10Pacman must be rolling in his grave.
- pkakira88, on 02/09/2008, -1/+11um, you've never seen any arcades in japan have you?
Some arcade game actually do have online multilayer and some even require internet access for certain features in the game. - Azuvector, on 02/09/2008, -1/+10I really couldn't have summed it up better myself. There's a real social aspect to gaming in an arcade that's really been lost since the advent of consoles and online multiplayer. The prices per play haven't helped(As someone's already mentioned, that's not something that's really been under the control of arcade manufacturers or locations; inflation sucks for low-cost entertainment.), but there was just a different and altogether more enjoyable atmosphere(And I don't mean the unfortunate BO that some people have, heh.) about arcade gaming that consoles at home and PCs just can't make up for. There's just something different about being in the same room with 10-20 people all competing and enjoying themselves and what they're playing. It's I guess, the nerd version of sunday night football or something. An arcade is kind've like a perpetual gaming party.
- linuxrocks2007, on 02/09/2008, -4/+13Correct except most arcade ports don't go over the $20-$40 range. House of the Dead 2+3 Return is going to be released at $30. Plus many people don't have access to an arcade or its an inconvenience so they just buy the console edition.
- Acqua206, on 02/09/2008, -0/+9I can't ever remember being called anything of the sort in my arcade gaming days. At least in that era, you had to call someone a fag to their face. Discretion was recommended, especially if said person was an otaku nerd who had 40lbs on you.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -3/+11KA DURKER DUR.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+8The only game I play at arcades is dance dance revolution. I have it at home, but it's just not the same as the real thing.
- kilodelta, on 02/09/2008, -0/+8ya, but who reads gamespot anymore?
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+8That's why I stick to my 25 cent Galaga machines
- Coffeedemon, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7"A lot of the types of games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home,"
Did I fall into a time warp and its now 1985 again? Maybe if it didn't cost a dollar + to play some ***** light gun game. - Amadeus2490, on 02/09/2008, -2/+9Well, I blame the PS2 for not only the downfall of arcades in America, but also for the destruction of the dreamcast. It was all for an arrogant lie, too.
- monkeyhoward, on 02/09/2008, -1/+8Why are arcades better?
The noise.
There is nothing like then din of an arcade.
I miss that. - Niceguy4186, on 02/09/2008, -11/+18THEY TOOK OUR JOBS!
and just a mental note to start working on my MAME machine again - sat0shi, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7I must say that I don't see arcades in Japan going anywhere any time soon. They are almost ALWAYS crowded when I go, unless I go at some weird time like around lunch on a weekday. The problem is that people aren't very sociable at arcades in Japan, partly due to the fact that unlike Ameican arcades you are usually sitting on the other side of the cabinet from your opponent. This is great because you don't get in each others way, but it kind of sucks because you don't get to really SEE your opponent.
- BlackOp, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6There are millions of arcades in Japan.
- FoxOrian, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6The last mature arcade in boston closed out a year or two ago... It saddened me :(
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -4/+10seriously - i'm surprised arcades exist in Japan. I havent seen one around here since 1996
- BrettTheUser, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6But those are older games, and House of the Dead 4 is still arcade only. I think I played House of the Dead 1 or 2 on a Pentium 2 machine 10 years ago.
Though I do with there were arcades here. I'd love to play more light gun games in an arcade again. - diskit, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6It's a competitive market. Learn to compete or go out of business.
- ShugNinx21, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6Getting payed in Quarters made them a ***** ton of money. Some of the first arcade machines, the techs were called out because the game had stopped working and was thought to be broken. Turns out the things were so jammed full of quarters that it couldn't accept any more.
The problem with arcades is that with the advent of home gaming machines, the arcade offered less and less over what someone could do at home. Over the years home machines have added more and more innovation and now the Arcades have very little game wise that's different to offer the customer.
If they want to survive they have to come up with a gaming experience that just can't be duplicated in the home. It's something they should have been thinking about for a long long time. - arcticblue, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Yep. If some 13 year old ever talked to me in real life the way they do online, it'd take an incredible of amount of self-restraint to keep me from doing bodily harm to them.
"oh you stupid gaynigger. i'm gonna pwn your ass back to the welfare line" as he proceeds to annoyingly sing... you get the picture. - Acqua206, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6You can't begin to compare an arcade in Japan to the ones we have here. Think of a Gameworks x5.
- LogicBomB, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6Many hobbies cost MUCH more than gaming. It's hardly a ripoff to spend a few dollars an hour having some of the most gaming fun of my life.
- heypetray, on 02/09/2008, -4/+9I must have spent close to $1,000 on DDR. Holy *****.
- piper999, on 02/09/2008, -4/+9If you buy a game to play at home for $60 that is the same as 80 plays of an arcade game at 75 cents. is it really such a bad deal?
- Tenareth, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5I already know one in Seattle that has Rock Band and Guitar Hero nights.
- PinkalPeaches, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6Sorry, but Tekken online is such garbage compared to playing side by side with someone. I've never met a single person who was half decent at Tekken say that online was a better or even equal experience to Arcade or live competition.
- stack3r, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5you would think that arcades would have kept evolving, so that they could always offer something you couldnt get at home. Obviously they just rode the money wave and were to ignorant to believe consoles would undermine them.
AND WHERE THE HELL IS VR? Was talked about and boasted about for agess years ago, nothing came of it except lots of dodgy stereographic helmets that had blurry graphics and made you sick and cant forget the limited game support. 10 years ago i thought we would have decent VR by now .. so far from the truth. - SoCalMario, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6Yeah, Good job NAMCO! I think the arcade industry shot themselves in the foot! Back in the 80's it was 25 cents to play now you have to put 1 dollar to play. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! Now why do I want to pay 1 buck to play when I can get unlimited play at home for 40 bucks a game! (or less) Namco needs to stop crying and stop pointing fingers and make those arcade games for the Wii!! It's called innovation! Besides I rather play wii at home while getting drunk and not have to worry about getting a DUI (Dave and Busters anyone???)
- Varz, on 02/09/2008, -0/+5Gaming cafes have replaced them.
- AzureRise, on 02/09/2008, -1/+5NOOOOOOOOOOO. Asian girls must stay hawt!
- AzureRise, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4True, I live in a small ass town where our biggest attractions are Target, Walmart, and the only movie theater in the city and even we have a gaming cafe.
- Dracusis, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4I know a Tekken championship finalist, and he would agree that Tekken "online" is utter garbage. He spent years playing in arcades learning from and competing against other hardcore players. Playing online just doesn't compare as the players don't interact on the same kind of level, don't participate in the same kind of discourse about their play styles and the like.
Online play will never match that of a real arcade, not on that level. - Abominous, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Well there hasn't been many arcade games released in the past few years that are anything to get excited over.
We all saw this coming when 32-bit systems emerged and arcade ports started to become perfect. - calon9, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Well put. I loved contests the local arcade had. Whomever had the high score on their new games that month got to play a whole day for free. Arcades were a cool day out with friends too: have a slice of pizza somewhere, then hang out at the arcade and waste a few hours of our youth. It was always partly about the games and partly about hanging out with friends.
But now I play console and PC games and socialize other ways. Even though I think I miss the arcade days, I'm just missing the carefree days of a youth with a pocketfull of change. - Emnsta, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4thats actually true, and people are digging you down?
- Travelsonic, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Sounds like you know a lot about arcades/arcade games. < / sarcasm>
and:
"...I was younger, probably spent $50 for 2hrs of playing time a"
Haha! $12 for 2 hours unlimited gameplay at my local arcade. - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+5I blame the electricity council for the destruction of the candle wick council. I blame the automotive union for destroying the horse buggy union. I blame progress for destroying the past.
