- bittermang, on 10/10/2007, -6/+56You can tell the devs were far too in love with how the grapple mechanism worked.
Somewhere on Bryyo I believe, there is a lever that works an elevator. This lever is at chest height, and resembles your normal everyday vertical hand lever like you've probably seen in your Half Life's and otherwise industrial complexes of the world. I don't recall anything from the scan saying why it needed to be, but none the less suggested "Hey you could totally grapple this! Yeah!" And away you go, ripping away violently at this everyday lever with your electro whip. Don't just use your hands like a normal person, no, you're Samus "*****" Aran, banshee queen of the space hunters. You bow to no lever.
Ripping open grates, removing obstructions, tearing calm peaceful switches apart, swinging like a monkey, appropriating shields from pirates, even ripping tendrils and tentacles off the indigenous and phazon enhanced species of the world. It's all great, it's all immersive, but damn if I don't feel like some kind of belligerent space ass running around the world ripping apart everything I can get my grapple around.
We get it Retro, you guys really liked the grappling hook. The tenacity and early stage in the game that they give the thing to you even gives it a kinda Gravity Gun quality, where you could tell Valve loved the physics thing and wanted you to have it through the whole freaking game.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have more space pirates to kill. - ursername180, on 10/10/2007, -5/+45There's going to be some 3rd party developer reading this and programming a new game called 'Doors And Levers' or some *****.
- vinht426, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35I thought Elebits utilized the Wii remote really well... was it that underrated?
- mlvassallo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25While the BIG FPS to tout is Bioshock right now, I believe a LOT more credit is due to Metroid Prime 3. Just pick it up and play it- you will know what I am talking about.
- MKautz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21I'm about 12 hours into the game and so far, I agree. The motion controls are by far the best I've experienced on the Wii. I can't say they have been 100% spot on but they have been much easier to use than almost any other game I've played.
- mrmacky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20I love the powerglove, it's so bad... and I mean, bad...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYDuy7wM8Gk - beerunifies, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Pssst, that's the developers sneaky way of masking loading times.
- JustinPM, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17So let me ask anyone here, you're in a powered armor that has different beams and missiles and all kinds of "holy *****" kind of features. What the hell would you want to do with this man, stroll around with a Hello Kitty lunch box tiptoeing so you don't break plants? Screw that man, most of the ***** she runs into tries to kill her, so you know what, if that were me I'd stop with the questions and kill anything that resembles something dangerous.
- ahhell, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15What in the hell did you just say?
- DangerMouse9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14No one knows. There were lots of *s and gibberish. What I don't understand is why people think putting F*** in place of ***** is less offensive. I mean, the word is the same, everyone and their 2 year old knows what the word is. To me, self-censoring is far more offensive than just saying the ***** word.
- PhilH, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Dammit. Now I need a new name...
- gweedo767, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11While I do really like the grapple feature, that switch did make me laugh.
- vanadium77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12I thought Elebits did a fantastic job with the motion controls as well, except for the fact that your timing had to be very spot-on to open doors correctly. The concept was great though, as was the premise of the game. (Great for multiplayers!) Other than that, yeah, it was a very underrated game.
- MiDri, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I have an innate fear of levers & swtichs...
- beerunifies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Do you get off work and run to the Wii so you can upon a door with some ridiculously long and convoluted motion?
Simply put, yes. Have you played the game? - directive0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Opening doors in Godfather: Blackhand were also very intuitive and well timed. It was essentially the same thing as a button press, when you think about it, but it felt a lot cooler.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Dugg for "belligerent space ass" remark.
- iceboxqs, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8The controls for this game are amazing. This game will be the base that other devs look at for FPS controls on the Wii. Finally a real FPS control scheme on a console, it has been way to long.
- fluidfoundation, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I didnt play call of duty 3 for the wii more than once because the controls felt akward. MP3:C took the same control scheme but added one feature, the Lock On with the ability to move the reticle to any point on the screen without moving your field of vision. THIS WORKS PERFECTLY.
I am very impressed with the control scheme, and even a little impressed with the graphics. Its no Bioshock but its Metroid, and I love it.
Now if they only created a Castlevania 1st person with being able to use the wiimote as a whip. - LethalGeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Losing control and staring some blah loading screen is even worse. I found in MP1 that gunning the door down and running straight to it generally gave the game the message to load in time.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7You missed out on Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario? For shame!
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6ok! oh wait...it's not released here in australia until december :((
- jedi0utkast, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Nintendo and Retro should release this control schema implementation as an SDK to all developers out there planning on creating games for wii.
This is FPS done right and after trying it, is hard to go back to using a dual analog to move around. - blackhand0114, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It's just that he's acting like he's played every game in the Wii.
- vulapine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Then play it in December.
- Snuff99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You can reverse the controls so that A jumps and the trigger shots. That's how I play. It's in the control options.
- joey368, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That's not what this topic's about.
- tr0tsky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The remarkably complex boss fights is one of the things I love about Metroid. Scan the boss, and it will generally tell you what you have to do. When in doubt, find something to use the item you most recently got against them.
- plhearn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I wouldn't go that far, but part 2 is definitely worth playing.
- beerunifies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So you bitch about the atypical Nintendo by-products, 'kiddie' games, yet want 'simpler' bosses in Metroid? Hmmm...
And you know, you aren't reading the logs to obtain info on how to beat the baddie - simply scan the dude and you are presented with TWO TO THREE lines of general info about the creature, which usually hints at how to take him down. Yes, there is a logbook but it seems that's just for additional useless info (origins, type, etc). - beerunifies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Well, comparing it to games he has yet to play seems a little silly, dontchathink?
- beerunifies, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hey, turn around, stupid!
- taraba, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm guessing the author of the article never played the game. I love the articles of "This game does better than any other game." because more often that not it's really saying "This game does better than any other game THAT I PLAYED."
- McTendo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Loser blocked. :)
- thanakar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I don't know..maybe my Wii remote batteries aren't up to par but I have difficulty with the push and pull doors and pumps. The pull back and twist are no problem but when pushing the switch back in that movement if rarely registered.
- DTJunkie07, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Don't skip number 2 it's better than the first.
- directive0, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Lord, just try the game. Theres no way anyone here giving you opinion will be able to tell you what you're asking. Simply put, the motion controls to open doors only comes along every once in awhile. Its usually just the standard Metroid "Shoot to open" thing. But there are some parts where you have to activate a mag lock type device and its really cool. Did they completely overuse it or waste time that could've been spent elsewhere? NO, not in my opinion. Try it and form your own opinion, then get back to us.
- Eevee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pull-twist-push is convoluted? Isn't that on about the same level of complexity as actually turning a doorknob?
- Stuntaneous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2wikipedia says october, wikipedia is god.
- mittortz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No, they just have a lot of worthwhile articles. I started visiting them regularly after discovering them on digg, and the articles are well-written and informative imo.
- directive0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2now that is an idea. Standardized FPS controls on the Wii would be a god send.
But seriously, Nintendo, the trigger needs to shoot. I know A is usually the "shoot button"...but come on... its a TRIGGER!!! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1this game is amazing truly amazing just when I think I seen the best in the game I turn the corner and it get's better, hat's off Retro
- Snuff99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When it asks you to point the Wiimote at the screen is when you should adjust your hand giving yourself room to perform the action. I find it helps but the system is by no means perfect.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1If i recall correctly, konami was being total ***** about the wii remote a few months ago and not really taking it seriously.
Castlevania WOULD be the ***** though... - LordVance, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3idk who was digging you down, but they obviously didnt click the link
- wtfmate112, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2Another Ars Technica story on digg? Looks like they are trying to do the same thing as destructoid by digging up their own stories to get traffic to their site.
- MrMongoose, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3I know I'm in the minority here, but I find having to use a sequence of convoluted movements to simply open a door a bit annoying in a video game. The same with "typing" in access codes, the first time I had to do that I couldn't help rolling my eyes. Metroid is about exploration and adventure, not being a space-station security simulator. What's next, you have to use motion control to reach in and pull out your next club selection in Tiger Woods golf? Or maybe to tie your shoes before hitting the links? Just because you can do something in a game doesn't mean you should.
- rjejr, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2I'm currently 2 hrs. into MP3:C while also still trying to beat Metroid Prime at the end of MP (I'm skipping MP2:E b/c there doesn't seem to be much point from the reviews) and while I like the grapple motions I really could do without the whole pulling turning pushing of the handles thing. Yeah its immersive, but not an activity I feel the need to be immersed in.
To me what makes the game more immersive is the voice acting and NPCs. MP has been a long solo affair (sorry but Space Pirates and Metroids don't count) and I appreciate that Samus Aran exists in game with other people. Maybe a few years from now I won't care, but it's nice now while I'm playing. - taraba, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Unfortunately it might not make it's way in to any other game. The Halo 2 party system and the game's all around handling of multiplayer sets high standards for online games (not just FPS games), but unfortunately no one seems to improve their game because of it. They seem to look at the raised bar and then go about their business like it never existed. It's a shame because I don't care for Halo, but I'd love it the Halo 2 type of multiplayer was standard in all types of games. I'd like to set a group of my friends and I in PGR or some racing game and then take us all from race to race together but mix up the competition. I'd like to be able to get two consoles and two discs and play a 2 v 2 game of Splinter Cell split screen when friends come over.
- DangerMouse9, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1A Castlevania 1st person would suck. I like being able to see everything around me, not just 65 degrees in front of me.
