- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -5/+217I'm weird in that I don't believe there should be curse words at all, kids should be taught what they mean - and if anything parents should teach their children not to be disrespectful (regardless of word choice).
When I found out about curse words as a kid, I had no idea what any of them meant (my parents just said they were very very bad), so I thought I stumbled into some new all powerful forbidden thing - so I went around cursing at people for no good reason when my parents weren't around. That is until I found out what it was I was saying. - kruykaze, on 12/07/2008, -22/+199*****, these ***** games need to be banned. How th ***** is this rated 3+ anyways?
- MCA2142, on 12/07/2008, -3/+138Let's ban the alphabet!
- barktwiggs, on 12/07/2008, -12/+135Who buys video games to help their kids vocabulary? READ A BOOK!
- skywake, on 12/07/2008, -2/+124Ironic that an article on scrabble and dictionaries has so many typos.
- skinflute, on 12/07/2008, -1/+110From the article: A spokesman for Ubisoft said: 'We are sorry the game has caused concern, but it includes a "junior" option that stops it using unusual or offensive words.'
- JDoms, on 12/07/2008, -4/+101i would give him a high five
- BeShirtHappy, on 12/07/2008, -4/+97I agree. I am diligent in the language I use around my son. I also explain to him why the word is bad if we are watching something and a swear word is used. My son thinks stupid, ugly and fat (among others) are bad words. If a word is said to hurt someone it is bad.
I know I'll probably get buried for this comment. I just feel that words (not just curse words) can hurt people. Of course, I want him to know that cursing and vulgarity just sounds crude, rude and unintelligent. - WraTH017, on 12/07/2008, -0/+86The greatest threat to society: Language.
- Strongo, on 12/07/2008, -1/+86the definition of *****: getting a triple word score in scrabble against a little kid.
- SagiMewtwo, on 12/07/2008, -9/+88It's a Ubisoft game, not Nintendo. Dugg down for being inaccurate.
- AndrewDB, on 12/07/2008, -9/+87Why doesn't she ask them to ban a dictionary as well?
Hey lady:
***** you. - Farceur318, on 12/07/2008, -0/+74I would say "No, son, it's '*****, look at THOSE *****' and then we would look at those *****.
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -0/+63"Any doubt was removed when the next word the computer offered was 'f*ckers', which it defined as 'a slang word for chavs'."
Since when do you define slang with more specific slang? - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+55My parents bought me those educational games when I was little (think Treasure Mountain, Treasure Cove, Super Solvers Spellbound, Reader Rabbit, etc.) and I played them all the time. Sure I read with my parents a lot too, but I think educational games are pretty amazing learning tools if they are actually fun to play.
- Malik112099, on 12/07/2008, -3/+54...and look at them *****.
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -3/+51That means SHE was at fault. She doesn't have to be a parent, when it's CLEARLY Ubisoft's problem.
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -12/+59We better ban the dictionary as well, oh and the bible while your at it.
- c010rb1indusa, on 12/07/2008, -6/+48Guess what Mom, your kid already learned those words in Kindergarden and probably has a vague but good idea what they mean so stop thinking it's the biggest deal in the world, and let the damn kid play some scrabble.

- absentmindedjwc, on 12/07/2008, -0/+38Two things here... 1) he is your child, so it is up to you to teach him how to behave around others. 2) It is your decision to include swear words and this moral rule into his "lessons".
I believe you are doing the correct thing here. Many times, children get into the habit of swearing at everything and anything because they learn the words when they do not understand them, and then get in the habit of throwing them around. If a parent explains to the child why the word is bad and what it means, and then even goes on to explain that any word that is used to hurt others is immoral to say, then I honestly believe that you are doing your child a service for his future. - subliminalurge, on 12/07/2008, -0/+38Yep.
My wife and I do try to restrict our cursing when the kids are around, but things do slip out. And we watch plenty of R rated movies with them in the room. Believe me, our daughters (7 and 13) have heard EVERYTHING.
Yet I've never heard either one of them use a curse word. Their teachers have never reported hearing such. Neither one is pregnant. Neither one is on drugs. Neither one steals my beer out of the fridge. In fact, both of them are 4.0 students, and take part in every honors program their school offers.
Sorry prudes, but if you raise your children right you won't have to worry. Good kids will still be good kids, even if they do (perish the thought) get exposed to the word "*****" at some point.
Parents need to start parenting, and give up the unrealistic notion that the world is, or ever will be, specifically designed for children.
Don't try to shield your children from reality. Prepare them for it. - frieddonuts, on 12/07/2008, -0/+36Oregon Trail taught me how to avoid dysentery. (answer: you can't)

- subliminalurge, on 12/07/2008, -4/+31***** this cocksucking *****. Who in the hell does she think she is? Does she think HER ***** doesn't stink? I'm ***** tired of whores like this trying to tell me I'm an ***** for not having the same braindead *****-up values as them.
I'd like to rant more and make sure I included every possible curse word, but I think the better way to rub it in her face is to just run to the mall and buy a copy of this game for each of my young daughters. (Who go to school every day, so I know they hear curse words on a regular basis, but have been taught MY values, and at least have the good sense to not swear at home. I'm also aware that on the playground at recess, all bets are off. Oh well, I learned to curse at an early age, and I still turned out to be a respectable, contributing member of society.)
Besides, Scrabble kicks ***** ass!

- Tiak, on 12/07/2008, -0/+25It doesn't have anything that isn't in a regular dictionary anyway... Because that's basically exactly what they did, imported a dictionary in to the game.
Should we be restricting dictionaries now?... Or at least listing dictionaries as T for Teen?...
Reading dirty words doesn't harm anyone, in 2nd grade, I looked up bad words in the dictionary and laughed stupidly, it didn't make me start using them, and even if it had, I don't see why people seem to think that is the end of all morality. - LeadStripes, on 12/07/2008, -11/+35Buried for daily mail.

Parents need to stop blaming gaming companies and learn to take some damn responsibility. It's not Ubisoft's fault she can't read the manual, and don't give me that crap about how she said it wasn't in there because she's obviously one of those parents who looks to blame everyone but herself. Van the goddamn dictionary while you are at it, and encyclopedias. - HyperJack, on 12/07/2008, -4/+2701110011 01110100 01101111 01110000 00100000 01110101 01110011 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01100101 01110100 01110100 01100101 01110010 01110011 00100001 00100000 01101110 01110101 01101101 01100010 01100101 01110010 01110011 00100000 01100001 01110010 01100101 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01110111 01100001 01111001 00100000 01100110 01101111 01110010 01110111 01100001 01110010 01100100 00100001

- domdunc, on 12/07/2008, -1/+20It does in tournament play (thank you Word Wars). Obviously it's up to the players whether they should be accepted in casual games.
- psevium, on 12/07/2008, -0/+18They apparently have a junior version, which would help. If it was only 3+ with no junior version, and it was using swear words, then sure, alter the rating. But I think she should be ok with being able to enable a 'clean' version of it
- Yez70, on 12/07/2008, -1/+19How refreshing it is to hear about a parent with common sense. GREAT JOB!
People like you are the parents that the media should be focusing on, not the fools who want to ban a video game for not taking their place as a parent. - black27696, on 12/07/2008, -0/+18I think we believe it, but we know that daily mail is primarily full of *****.
