- Darkangel754, on 07/26/2008, -4/+56Glad to see Miyamoto isn't afraid to say his real thoughts.
- batmanz, on 07/26/2008, -1/+52Problem with the wii is that developers think that they can make crappy quality games, as long as it has motion sensing controls, because, you know, that's cool. Same thing goes for graphics on the other systems, they think if graphics are great, they can get away with a crappy game. I would rather play most of the old games on the NES than most of these new games with great graphics.
- TremorX, on 07/26/2008, -2/+37Steps to port a game to the Wii:
1) Remove Normal Maps & dynamic lighting
2) Replace "press button" with "Shake controller"
3) ....
4) Ported - chaosblade77, on 07/26/2008, -3/+32He's completely right. Some games just work better on a traditional controller. Others work well with the remote/motion sensing.
Having both options for their future console would be a much better idea than simply moving in one direction. The Wii has GCN and classic controllers, but developers usually don't look to those for Wii games. They just design games for the remote. Hopefully with two full controllers specific for gameplay for that console's games, developers will work with both. - BrokenCircle, on 07/26/2008, -0/+15Except the Gameboy, DS, NES and SNES; they were carried by a kickass support of 3rd party rpgs and action/adventure games.
The notion that Nintendo was entirely supported by first party games did not come around until N64/GCN when the only remotely decent games for those two systems were first party games. - Tyrghast, on 07/26/2008, -2/+16Well there you go Miyamoto, you have created a challenge for yourself, now overcome the Wii controls and make a great game with them!
- dragon76, on 07/26/2008, -1/+15I think Nintendo kind of shot their load too soon. Unless they dig deep into the properties chest and come up with a really great Kid Icarus Wii or a kickass new Star Fox or something along those lines, 1st party games are going to suffer and really, ANY Nintendo console is about 1st party games.
- dragon76, on 07/26/2008, -0/+10It's up to the developers to decide whether they want to use the classic controller or even Gamecube controller. A developer could require the classic or GC controller but the truth of the matter is the Wii Remote/Nunchuk combo is much more interesting to consider.
- NecroSexy, on 07/27/2008, -1/+9I agree. The public is outraged, so they're purging their rage by buying a Wii.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8"Same thing goes for graphics on the other systems, they think if graphics are great, they can get away with a crappy game."
I agree, except for those games, people claim they are so great because of the graphics. I've never heard anyone talk about how great a wii game is simply based on the controls, but time and time again I hear people talk about how awesome a game is because of the graphics. I love great graphics, we all do, but a graphics don't make the game. Nintendo seems to be the only company that's figured this out. The thing about graphics, is they don't age well. Remember how blown away you were back in '99 when you played Half-Life? By today's standards, the graphics are crap, but the gameplay still pulls you in. Developers need to stop making graphics the top priority of games, and focus on gameplay and replay-ability. The games that we all remember and love are rarely remembered for the visuals, but for the fun we had playing them. - BlueSkyfish, on 07/27/2008, -1/+8Devs need to know that they don't HAVE to use the motion controls. A platformer or sports game is fine without them. A FPS on the other hand, needs to use them. Playing a shooter with analog sticks is just wrong.
- chaosblade77, on 07/26/2008, -1/+8I wouldn't say the Wii is underpowered... looking at previous generation consoles and the technological jumps that have been made over time, the PS3 and 360 are "overpowered." It's hard to compare the Xbox and 360 due to the fact that the original Xbox was basially a PC, but the PS3 is 3GHz faster than the PS2 (with more complex co-processors), and other aspects of the hardware like the GPU and RAM made similar massive leaps. I do think some of the graphics technologies should have been incorporated into the Wii that weren't, like Shader 2 (probably would have meant a slight GPU upgrade, but nothing much), and it definitely needed some sort of optional storage space, but other than that I don't see a problem with the hardware.
That said... I don't think hardware has anything to do with the console that turns out to be "the best." Not necessarily in terms of "winning the console war" sales, but in terms of which is enjoyed the most by gamers. The PS2 was had the weakest hardware last generation. The PS1 was underpowered compared to the N64. The SNES had weaker hardware than the Genesis - yet all of those weaker consoles were considered better because of what was done with them. If the Wii somehow got a library full of great games that either utilize the motion controls very well, or allow play with the classic/GCN controllers, MOST people would completely ignore the weaker hardware for the great games. - georgemason01, on 07/26/2008, -2/+9Bypass blogspam here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/connected/main.jhtml?xm ...
- overground55, on 07/27/2008, -0/+6you sir, are a ***** idiot.
The snes for starters has unmachable list of AAA games.
I could go on and list some of the MANY, or you could just type up a list of top 10 or top 20 snes games. every list you find will have drastically different titles on its top list.... except for the final five.
it usually ends with zelda, mario, metroid, final fantasy, and f-zero. - nicko68, on 07/27/2008, -1/+7I thought the controls for Super Mario Galaxy were ok. The shaking to do your spin felt tacked on though.
- chaosblade77, on 07/27/2008, -0/+5Buried for not thinking the Wii is a new product? Seriously, learn some stuff about the gaming industry before spewing your fanboy garbage.
- nicko68, on 07/27/2008, -0/+5Buried for "the gamecube... er uh..."
- chaosblade77, on 07/27/2008, -0/+5I guess I don't see how that inaccurate comment about the Wii's lack of horsepower and value is relevant. I'm pretty sure a real gamer isn't going to care that the Wii is less powerful than the other two consoles, they care that developers are screwing them over because they bought this console but the developers refuse to make good games for it. The lack of accessible buttons on the Wii controller is a hindrance, and this is also something that real gamers would care about.
The Wii does not NEED motion controls to justify it's existence regardless of it's hardware capabilities. A good game on the Wii is no different than a good game on the PS3 in the end. In both cases, you enjoyed yourself and got your entertainment, that's the goal of gaming. If you get more enjoyment out of being able to count the hairs on Snake's head or mindless waving a remote around, then more power to you. Some of us take the experience as a whole, not just horsepower, and not just waggle. - Treblex, on 07/27/2008, -2/+75) ????
6) Profit - Shaflugi, on 07/27/2008, -0/+5Well, with one exception. Being able to point at the stars that pull Mario in wouldn't have been nearly as easy or cool with a GCN controller. Other than that, agreed.
- philodygmn, on 07/26/2008, -0/+4I agree with his impetus for the Wii that games got too locked into traditional controllers, I just think the Wiimote didn't need to be so far divorced from them, nor be the Wii's exclusive focus. Underpowering the Wii to such a degree, also, was unforgivable. I'm fine to give his teams all the time they need to perfect feature titles, but stunting them for the sake of casual gamers is a fatal mistake.
- Erythroxylum, on 07/26/2008, -4/+8Yeah, except it's not 2001 anymore.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4You're right, 2d graphics aren't what I was referring to, mainly 3d games.
- AparoidX, on 07/27/2008, -0/+42D Metroid game... hurry up and make it, Nintendo... I'm going to die. :'(
- rexCo, on 07/26/2008, -4/+8Mario Galaxy was good, but mostly everything it did could have been done with a Gamecube controller.
- Valyn, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4Chrono Trigger
Mario Kart
Smash Bros
Castlevania
Tetris
Final Fantasy
Dragon Warrior
Those are obscure? Those are some classics that are still good today.
There are many many more that were good back then, but have lost some or most of their appeal now though. Much like most of today's games will. When people think back at this generation of games, they are not going to be thinking of Crackdown or Overlord. But those were still fun to play through (to me anyways, and they sold well).
Contra
Ikari Warriors

I agree that they had a lot of crap also (and i only scrolled through the NES games), but the lies that there were only a few games worthwhile makes your point into a joke. - Treblex, on 07/27/2008, -0/+4"If I stop playing, I will be fired."
- kanimara, on 07/26/2008, -3/+7This is all talk, just like they said we should expect to see something for the non-casual gamers at E3. In three systems now, or TWELEVE FREAKING YEARS, Nintendo still hasn't learned their lesson about third party support. All talk. I'm expecting 99% of games for the Wii to be casual, as well as the next system they release. There is no reason to believe different. Miyamoto has also previously said he wants to make games for the casual gamers (your family, his wife) so this really means absolutely nothing.
- inactive, on 07/27/2008, -4/+7The Wii should have been packaged with a classic controller in addition to the Wii remote and nunchuk. Not doing so was a huge mistake by Nintendo in my opinion.
- AparoidX, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3But no free porn? Buried.
- Andrwmorph, on 07/28/2008, -0/+3SNES = best RPGs ever
- ShadowMarth, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3The problem is, they're right.
- ShadowMarth, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3True, but you COULD play Twilight Princess on the Gamecube. But... After playing it with the Wiimote, I wouldn't want to. It's clearly superior, since it can do all that the Gamecube controller could and more, not to mention it's much more comfortable to hold.
- scuzzmonkey69, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3dual shock was ALWAYS a bad controller - especially if you are older than about 15 and/or have big hands
the problem i've always had with it was the fact that i have to hold it with the very tips of my fingers to actually be able to use the sticks effectively.
having the left stick below and to the right of the D pad is a big mistake for the reasons chaos gave, and something that really should have been fixed for the PS3, instead of just chucking in sixaxis as a means to compete with the Wii.
that being said though, i do know friends of mine that love it, and think it's the best....so - meh. - cplex, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3Yeah, the Genesis had BLAST PROCESSING!!!1
- Shaflugi, on 07/27/2008, -0/+3Wrong! 3D graphics don't age well. 16-bit games have aged a tad, but they still look pretty damn good, as long as you aren't blowing them up to twice the size.
- T440, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2Thank you...It's getting seriously stupid when we start digging a game site's article that's talking about a game sites article that's talking about the real article.
- Valyn, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2I heard the new Mario Party was going to have Master Cheif in it, along with Niko.
- chaosblade77, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2< /opinion >?
Dual Shock certainly isn't a bad controller (second favorite design to date), but I prefer the Gamecube controller's ergonomic design to it. I don't mind the analog stick placement either, personally I think it's a lot better since more games use the analog sticks than the d pad. I'll sacrifice buttons for comfort, especially if I'm playing for long periods of time. Xbox controller sucked (360 is better) though. I hated that brick.
Gamecube controller could have had a couple more buttons (another shoulder button and maybe select or something) but it gets to a point where you have too many buttons... games either won't use them all, or are probably too complex. - Shadic, on 07/28/2008, -0/+2I've played Twilight Princess on both, and I heavily prefer the Gamecube controller. It feels more natural, and you can tell the game was designed for it.
If the sword actually was more accurate with how you swung the Wiimote, then things may have been a bit different. - ZenMojo, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2No, doing a triple jump backflip off a wall into a swan dive made Mario 64 good. Zelda's combat is pretty archaic to say the least. And who in their damn mind plays the original Donkey Kong anymore?
- Kingoftherings, on 07/27/2008, -0/+2*cough*patch*cough*
- doshindude, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1hell, Cammie alone was enough of an embarassment, who the hell was this woman anyway? she's NEVER been at ANY nintendo function in the past, and now she randomly comes up and totally ruins whatever we were expecting.
- Valyn, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Outside of his exaggeration, its still true.
- ScionX, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1@ kingoftherings
While having the ability to patch games is nice, it's also made it so companies have no issue rushing out glitched out games knowing that they can patch it later.
I myself prefer patches to provide updates/new content to games, not fix things that shouldn't have been in there in the first place. - ZenMojo, on 07/27/2008, -1/+2Games got locked into traditional controllers for Nintendo in particular because the Gamecube controller was a ***** CONTROLLER based off an evolution of the N64 stick design.
The dualshock has always had innovative controls from Ape Escape to Okami that defy tradition despite using a decade-old control design.
Nintendo painted themselves into a corner with ergonomic simplicity and realized they couldn't do anything else with what they had. They emphasized one button while deemphasizing the rest. They made the second analog an awkwardly-placed afterthought and did all they could to hide the Z button.
So while you're using analog-based gesture controls on the Dual Shock or (to a lesser extent) the Xbox controllers with Fight Night, the Gamecube was trying to get people to do less with less.
Nintendo sidestepped this by mapping those "inconvenient" buttons they've been trying to get rid of to rudimentary wrist-flicks. Reasonable enough approach on a one-to-one basis, but not exactly the best step forward in all cases. - Elranzer, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1Actually, it's that the system is packaged with the Remote (and Nunchuk). The Classic Controller must be bought separately.
It's SegaCD-syndrome, basically. - Valyn, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1I completely agree. Well I don't have PS3, because i can't stand Sony as a company. Nothing to do with he PS3 as a console. But I agree with the Wii comments. I mean no DVD playback? No online (might as well not be there)? All these things that Nintendo did show that they were taking the Wii towards a different market. Unfortunatly, its not a market I am part of.
- TheTjalian, on 07/27/2008, -0/+1Actually, Nintendo has never really played nice with third parties, except 20 years ago Nintendo was the big guy in charge, and no wanted to ***** with Nintendo, so they all played along with Nintendo's demands. Honestly? I don't ever expect this to change.
- Elranzer, on 07/28/2008, -0/+1The likes of Wii Music, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, et. al are all the brain-childs of Sataru Iwata more than Miyamoto, starting with Brain Age.
Miyamoto was always about the traditional gaming: Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc. (All of which tend to score no less than 9-10 from most gaming critics). -
