- OlnyGuy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+44Wow, Nintendo is finally listening trying to appeal to the core gamer. Unless the new character is "Wii Fit Lady".
- samadam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24I don't know...I think Mama from Cooking Mama has real gameplay potential!
- johnhummel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22You mean like - Wario?
- LegendarySock, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Uhh... Do his job and fix the ***** toilet already?
- Tikkimann, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19New characters from Nintendo? They've done the "innovation" thing right recently, so I don't see any reason not to start a new series.
- johnhummel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I wouldn't be too surprised at this. If you notice in the Wario Ware line up, they've been inventing quite a few new characters - a Martial Arts Ramna like kid named Cricket, of course the red headed Mona (who I guess is now a cheerleader), the young witch and ninja kids, so on and so forth.
The advantage of adding new franchises with totally new gameplay is it allows experimentation. If a certain gameplay takes off, you've got a character behind you can branch off into other (hopefully successful) new variations. If it fails, at least you're not overloading your stable of characters and associating them with failed concepts.
You have to give credit for Nintendo, though: for all of the complaints about "too much Mario stuff", the Kart, Golf, and Tennis games have been pretty damned effective usages of their core characters. I would like to see some more teen to adult oriented franchises - Samus and the Fire Emblem series is a good example of something that can be labeled more "mature" without being "blood and breasts". I had hoped that games like Project HAMMER might fit the bill, but we'll just have to see.
Oh, side note; Nintendo Power. Page 50. Best Samus Aran picture ever. Just for information's sake. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Damn, and I was hoping for "Mario Tour-De-France." Where players can get kicked out for doping if they use invincibility stars.
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Wii-Fit Lady appeals to My 'core gamer', if you know what I mean...
...Yeah, I'm deeply sorry for the preceding comment. - swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13New in '08: Lario and Muigi in an exciting new platform game!
- informality, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11I bet they're going to make a Weach. You know, to go with Wario and Waluigi.
- swrostmore, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9These brothers are mustachio'd A/C repairmen who travel using ventilation ducts! By the way this idea is (c) swrostmore, Miyamoto!
- RenoSJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Pikmin isn't a "guy". It's more of a race of little onion sprouts.
- zengonzo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Last year on the DS?
- TheUngod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The problem is they are assuming the characters they create will become a series. Series shouldn't start with that expectation. Make one damn good game, and if it takes off, make more.
- Jowitz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Plumb I guess.
- McTendo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Brawl potential!
- Renton, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The main character from pikmin is Captain Olmar. He controls little plant monsters called pikmin. If you have a Wii, all gamecube games are backwards compatible, so you should really check this game out.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pikmin - Shuk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7This is great news. Nintendo needs to make a character that has style and that fits with the Wiis graphical capabilities. All the Nintendo characters feel like they are designed for Nintendo 64 (it's hard to explain, but Link, for example, perfectly fits the N64 and any graphical improvements just seem like an added bonus). As for the theme: they've already done:
-Space/Laser guns
-Crazy pipe land
-Fantasy/castles/dungeons
-Jungle/monkeys
-Dream/nightmare land
I'm hoping for a slicker character, with perhaps a Ninja or pirate-esque setting to it. They've never really explored that realm. - KingGoonie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6What about making franchises out of past great games... I want another uniracers damn it! And wheres the VC download!
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+62006, New Super Mario Bros, Actually
- DAaaMan64, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I don't know Chibi Robo is a pretty big bad ass honesty.
- magicjames92, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6exciting... a new color of turtle... i cant wait...
- meruru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I'm guessing Waloshi or maybe Weach
- DAaaMan64, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Chibi Robo is a pretty big bad ass too.
- naio, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Yes, please. Enough with childish characters. My Wii will thank you.
- aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I think you are on to something with expanding the WarioWare Mona Character, Wii gaming needs more female leads who aren't pretty pink princesses. My little cousins liked playing her minigame set (over and over again) so she appeals to the demographic.
(Here is a picture for those that don't know who mona is) http://www.n-philes.com/games/WII/WII_wario_ware_smooth_mooves/2.jpg - DrIce926, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Right, right. And then a Wowser (wtf?), Wamus, a Wonkey Kong, Wirby, and finally, Wash, Ash's REAL nemesis - and totally evil. You can just tell because there's a "W" on the fro-..... nevermind.
Here's hoping they're as awesome as some of the old ones. =) - blaaguuu, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Something that isn't incredibly fun?
- Dracker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I WOULD like to see the Koopalings return.
They haven't been featured in a game since what, Super Mario World?
Bowser Junior just doesn't cut it. - Smopple, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I remember back in the GameCube era when Miyamoto was talking about plans to roll out several new Nintendo characters and franchises over the span of the GC's lifetime. We ended up getting Pikmin, which, although a fun game, isn't memorable for its characters.
- Korexz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5And losing a nut to cancer...

There is the line. - b3mus3d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That would be ***** awesome.
FRYING PAN ATTACK! - Tikkimann, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'd like to see that picture...Does anyone have a link?
- SpannerX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I love Chibi Robo! Strange but very fun game.
- Tippis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Already happened in some of the sliding race stages of Mario64...
Bah! If I can skip 90% of the stage by doing a few choice jumps, that silly Penguin can as well ;P - Flummoxer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It looked crappy. All you do is wave a hammer around; wow really a lot of depth to that.
- crazybrit, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4***** innovation!
- goombanomics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I hope the new characters are Tim and Chris Stamper (former owners of Rare). All they will do is roam around Nintendo-Land feeling sorry for themselves.
- JayD16, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah thats new an innovative. Never seen that in a Super Smash...oh wait.
- Almadiel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3If this means new games, then great. I'm tired of playing the same games on different systems. Metroid is fine and all, but I have it already for gamecube.
- imikedaman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They don't like Nintendo because Nintendo tends to treat them like *****.
At least they are attempting to change as of recent:
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/08/nintendo-learns-to-play-nice-with-third-party-developers/ - Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Nintendo made another new franchise character besides Pikmin (and Chibi-Robo, which the article forgot) in the Gamecube era... Pockle. This is a character with an original RPG, Giftpia (think Mother/Earthbound, Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing mixed), released only in Japan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giftpia - OutlawAdidas, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3actually, Majora's Mask was wayyyy different than most of the zelda games.
WW changed a little bit. TP made it more epic.
SO it has changed - wizpig64, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is the same picture as in the magazine:
http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/characters/zerosuit_samus.html - coldwind777, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Why would they change it drastically? The gameplay, control, etc. for these games is just about perfect as it is. For instance, the gameplay and controls haven't changed much for Zelda since OoT simply because they were so close to perfect. MP2 (which is 2nd party, not 1st, by the way) was so similar to MP1 because MP1 was so amazing.
Most other game developers have been doing the same thing with their big franchises, you just don't notice as much because they haven't been around for 20 years. - aywwts4, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3The series did change, Windwaker and Majora's Mask were good changes, Shortsighted gamers complained that it wasn't exactly like OoT (too kiddish, or the masks suck etc) so they gave in, and made OoT2 (AKA Twilight Princess) Even though looking back, Majora's mask was much better than TP
- Dubbsacc, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Or instead of whining, you could just not come to Digg...
- Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, since they have never done that before, *rolls eyes*
- frigginchris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1about time already.
- Nintendo451, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Project H.A.M.M.E.R.? Please? Seriously. That game looks amazing. I was really looking forward to it! Then they had to go and CANCEL it..... sheesh...
