- Okari, on 10/17/2007, -52/+425How the hell is Halo revolutionary? All it was was your typical FPS game that got way over hyped. I'm getting tired of people saying Halo brought so many new things to the FPS genre.
- JackyAppleJones, on 10/11/2007, -8/+190If any FPS revolutionized the genre, it'd be Doom or Half-Life.
- Sikaffy, on 10/11/2007, -28/+152Halo was a revolution in FPS gaming?
WTF! - TGun, on 10/11/2007, -12/+104Goldeneye was more revolutionary than Halo was for FPS.
- ChillEnt, on 10/17/2007, -15/+107It better be. These newer Wii games have been letting me down. I'm looking forward to this one.
- atomicpoet, on 10/11/2007, -5/+44"To be fair, Halo did revolutionize the FPS genre on consoles. They were never taken seriously until then."
I suppose GoldenEye was just a flash in the pan. - AhrenBa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+40Agreed. Although, if you want a GREAT game, pick up Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. I am aware that it is a remake, but is so refined and fun. I just picked it up the other day, and it is a steal for only $30!
- skjede, on 10/11/2007, -18/+48Wii : gameplay OVER graphics
- atomicpoet, on 10/11/2007, -3/+32But before there was Halo there was Goldeneye -- whose killer feature, it could be argued, was its multiplayer. Thus, Halo can't be claimed to be the first killer app FPS for consoles.
- Uranium118, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34I'm a fan of Halo and it is not revolutionary in any way. We could say it popularized the recharging health because it was well implemented into the game but nothing revolutionary. It took many good aspects of older games and mixed it together very well. It's a very good game without too many flaws.
Metroid will not be revolutionary either. You could only read that on a Nintendo fan site. - xerus, on 10/17/2007, -6/+33Guys, stop arguing about Halo, you're missing the biggest point here. * BEAM STACKING *
- cptgame446, on 10/17/2007, -3/+28So by revolutionary, do they mean the motion controls will revolutionize how i teabag a fallen enemy?
- AnotherCanadian, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28are you out of your mind? halo brought nothing new to the genre.
ai taking cover revolutionary? puh-lease! - TheGeek27, on 10/17/2007, -4/+26Man, now Metroid Prime 3 is cursed. Whenever anyone tries to say something is "better than Halo" or a "Halo killer", the game is doomed.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23So long as it plays better than Red Steel, I'm fine.
- AmishRefugee, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24I had no idea something could be considered a revolution just for selling well. The closest thing to revolutionary Halo ever did was have a slightly more original storyline than other FPSs around at the time
- EnsErmac, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24How can Halo be called revolutionary when all it was Marathon with better graphics?
- HUKI365, on 10/11/2007, -19/+37Agreed. Its the exactly the same as the iPod. People are quick to claim succesful things a revolutionary, but they are never that. They are merely evolutionary. Or just simply good marketing.
- Reno582, on 10/17/2007, -1/+19Halo wasn't revolutionary, but it was damn well executed, and thats all thats required to be a success.
In saying that I hope Metroid Prime 3 is a success. - parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20WTF? Metroid went 3D?
I need to catch up with the times! - duckduckswan, on 10/11/2007, -9/+26I have to say I'm amazed and pleased with the amount of other comments I see ridiculing how "revolutionary" halo was. I'll get dugg down for this but it's always been a sub-par shooter in my opinion. Sure it's what practically sold the Xbox but so f'ing what, it's just a Golden Eye 2.0+ clone. Whoopty doo, I can carry two guns and melee with any of them, OMGz0rs there's vehicles too. Nothing like this was ever implemented prior.
- cautiousspade, on 10/11/2007, -5/+21i really can't wait for this game, the only other game i want more is super smash bros
- waj5001, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Halo is a good game, thats it; the only reason people flip out whenever someone says "Halo was such a revolution for FPS" is because there's nothing concrete backing the claim. The claims are always, "it brought the FPS to the console market", but what about Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini... Halo clearly and simply was the 1st "decent" FPS from the last generation of consoles. There was nothing new, ok, we got an assault rifle that can't shoot, a pistol is bar-none one of the best weapons in the game, a shotgun, a rocket launcher, some alien guns that no one really used, grenades, and melee attacks - the plasma grenade was a nice touch, I give it that. The enemies were standard aliens, ok, cool, get to shoot aliens, but the mutated humans, aliens, and the little alien critters that hop on your head, wait, I played that game, it was called Half Life, Hey Bungie, what'd you do with my crowbar? Nothing new to Halo people, stop saying it please - it's only a good game amongst a vast list of other FPS.
But anyway, I really think Nintendo is paying very close attention to the progress and quality of Metroid; it is after all, one of Nintendo's "seed games" like Zelda and Mario, it's planted deeply in every person that owns and plays on Nintendo consoles, "We own a Nintendo, therefore we must play Metroid". Nintendo is going to focus on the control scheme and hopefully has learned from the mistakes and progress from Red Steel, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor (I won't mention Far Cry Vengeance, I try to pretend that never happened >< ) - a0me, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Welcome to the 21st century man!
You should also check that new game "Super Mario 64" on the Virtual Console. Super Mario, in 3D. Insane!
But seriously, yeah, Nintendo released two Metroid games on the GameCube and one for the DS (+ one Metroid pinball game). - Racerx52, on 10/17/2007, -4/+18Since when hasn't Metroid rocked complete balls?
It's got to be my favorite series of all time, followed by Half-life. - dagamer34, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Revolution only comes after you've created the genre. Doom/Half-life pretty much made the modern FPS.
- vd0man, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16I think just about everybody here has misunderstood the quote. They're not talking about the gameplay being a revolution, they're talking about the controls. Gameplay wise Halo and Metroid aren't in any competition because they're completely different.
- Lobut, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16@AwesomeMonster
I think you're not understanding the difference between revolution and well-executed elements. Now, a decent auto-aiming system, vehicle, and 16-player games are not revolutionary. My reason is that they are either fine-tuning or transporting elements from other PC FPSs.
Revolutionary is something that changes the scope of its genre. Very few games do that and I assure you that Halo is not one of them. - Taedirk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16The latest wave of screenshots really dashed my hopes. I've never been that concerned about graphics, but they've had 5 years and a system upgrade and the only thing that looks different to me between Prime and Prime 3 is the HUD. I really do hope the newest version has strong gameplay, but between the graphics and the failures I've recently seen on the Wii (someone should be killed for Red Steel and Marvel: UA controls), I just don't have any enthusiasm left.
- kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Wolfenstein was the first FPS. Doom was made by the same people later on, and introduced multiplayer FPS over network/modem.
Quake introduced internet-based multiplayer instead of direct modem-to-modem play.
HL1 introduced seamless level transitions, next level starts exactly where the last ended. It had some weapons that hadn't been done before like the snarks. That's it. HL1 was mainly just a good game, not a revolution.
System Shock was the first FPS/RPG hybrid, Deus Ex followed in their steps. Doom 3 copied System shock's log-based narration for story. Bioshock is from the System Shock guys and their innovation in Bioshock will be a narrative one as well. - Jokermx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Halo 1 wasn't online (for the Xbox), so your comment about "for a lot of people it was their first experience playing a FPS on the internet" is not true.
- kelbear, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Halo had no innovation. It just took existing things into a new combination and executed them well...which is kinda everything you need from a game. To be good. Innovation is one means towards that end. So long as the game is good it doesn't matter.
There are a lot of big titles out there that didn't introduce anything. Half-life 2? Gears of War? As long as you do it well, you don't have to radically shift revolutionary paradigms *pfffft* - jacenat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11half life was an evolution of quake1
quake 1 was a revolution because of its "all 3d" usage.
no more 2d enemies. no more 2d rockets. - SpeedyG, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Story should probably read something akin to "revolution in CONSOLE fps gaming". That said, I don't know a lot of games with controls anything like what's being promised, save for railshooters and arcade games.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Perfect dark *****, do you speak it?
- Amadeus2490, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Am I the only one that laughed when I saw that the game's called "MP3 Corruption?"
- ByronT, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Counter-Strike doesn't have health packs.
- Pinkshisno, on 10/17/2007, -1/+10Have you noticed that many console shooters are adapting some type of life that recharges after a while? I don't know if Halo did invent the rechargeable shield in console shooters, but you did start seeing more and more of them after Halo came out. Call of Duty 2 for 360 for example kinda had a rechargeable life.
Correct me if I'm wrong though, I'm not familiar with this on the PC side of shooters. - moofree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Halo was an xbox launch game.
So.... yes... before Halo was out, the xbox had 0 good games and 0 appeal. - blobzorz, on 10/11/2007, -12/+21Halo wasn't very revolutional. It was just the only good xbox game. Space, vehicels, CTF/... UnREAL PERHAPS
- enicholas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9No, Goldeneye was the first decent FPS for consoles.
- metamorfoza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10wolfenstein 3D FTW!
- Taromsn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I only hope they have some good solid multiplayer, there needs to a game I can play with my friends.
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Holy ***** you're an idiot.
- CommissarVlad, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Agreed, but Red Steel was a rushed game made by a 3rd party company. Nintendo won't do anything like that, they have a history of making polished and solid games for the consumer.
- Nick22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Anyone else think that the term "revolution" is getting really old? Seems like every cool looking game/product that offers something new is "revolutionary"
- Athelias, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Two words, Starsiege: Tribes.
- Cyberbladewolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Yup, all those 13 year old dumbasses swearing away on xBox live who cry cheater when somebody who is actually good at the game kills them. Masses indeed.
- sneakerelph, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7it was also in the few FPSs that were on the PS1 and PS2 before the xbox came out.
Red Faction? Unreal Tournament PS2? - ragunax, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8This game will most likely prove that FPS can be played with more ease using the Wiimote. The control is phenominal if done right.
Where Nintendo can win EVERYONE over is a robust multi-player package with the game. Combined with free online system they can make a killing. I can only hope! -
