- kinseyincanada, on 03/23/2009, -5/+56what the hell, didnt it come out like 8 months ago? why are you discussing the controls now.
- xwater, on 03/23/2009, -4/+23this article is like, a year late
- TheInimitable, on 03/23/2009, -0/+14My roommates and I all use the wiimote tilting. It's not as accurate as a GCN controller (or even the nunchuck joystick), but it's certainly more fun.
- nerdherder, on 03/22/2009, -2/+16I generally use the remote and nunchuck. I found steering by tilting to be more difficult than I thought it would be. I'm sure if I just used it more often I would get used to it, but hey, I'm lazy.
- batmanz, on 03/23/2009, -8/+21I like the wiimote and nunchuck.
..But Mario Kart 64 is still the best. - the2989, on 03/23/2009, -0/+11Once you get good with it, it's very accurate. Accurate enough for me, anyway.
- maduin, on 03/23/2009, -1/+10it's called flicking your wrist slightly upward. It's not Nintendo's fault that you can't grasp simple concepts such as that.
- Ioncannon, on 03/23/2009, -1/+9One thing I can say about the controllers, is that with a analog joystick, you know the limit of it's tilt, basically when it can't move anymore. However with tilting or the steering wheel, there is not such stopping force, so you never know when you hit the maximum angle of the controller. This is one thing I hated about turning with the wheel. Also, specially in brawl, when you push a button, you know the action will be executed, while waggling, may or may not execute it.
- mikek814, on 03/23/2009, -2/+8same for me remote and nunchuck expert, tilting is not sensitive enough for my taste
- Zippo, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5I started off with the wheel like most people. I finished all the tracks and was playing online... and despite my best efforts, could never really obtain 1st place in the online races. I couldn't really figure out why they were playing so much better.
Then my friend suggested I switch to the classic controller... and suddenly I was 1000x better at the game. - Ioncannon, on 03/23/2009, -2/+7I use a Gamecube controller, it's as accurate as can be.
- the2989, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5Yeah you can. It just takes a little practice, then it's easy as cake.
- fictionalOne, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4Like I tell my 5 year old at home, "It's not about who wins, it's about having fun." There, now use the damn steering wheel and have some fun.
- macbookhair, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4you lose all credit for saying looses
- electrikyle, on 03/23/2009, -1/+5I absolutely love when a group of friends comes over and we put on MKWii and they all plug up GC controllers because "you're so much more likely to win" and I play tilt-style and come in first. It really comes down to how willing you are to try something new. I find it ironic that people complain about there not being any innovation with this game, but there's an entirely new system of control to learn, most people just don't bother. It's so very worth it, and in my opinion, provides just as much (or more) accuracy. Same goes for Smash Bros Brawl - everyone gets out the GC controllers but I use the Wiimote - they accuse me of "cheating" when I win. Since when is a system's designated controller considered a handicap? If anything, it proves that I've taken the time to learn the game!
- Cubeforce, on 03/23/2009, -3/+7In the end it comes down to what kind of game you're playing:
-For fun: use the wheel.
-Competitive: GC controller or Wiimote+Nunchuck, waggle just isn't as accurate or fast when you're sliding around tight corners. - the2989, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4Mario Kart Wii kicks ass. Are you not very good at it?
- moothemagiccow, on 03/23/2009, -2/+5Pretending the remote is a steering wheel is the coolest goddamn thing about the game. Now you no longer look like an idiot moving your head and arms around as you turn.
- the2989, on 03/23/2009, -2/+5Tilting the controller without the steering wheel on manual drift is the only way I can play. Analog sticks are boring compared to the tilt, and the wheel makes it noticeably harder to control. Manual just makes me go faster.
- birch25, on 03/23/2009, -1/+4I don't own the game, but my brother does and when I played with him I tried the tilt controls first and thought the game was sluggish and nowhere near as fun as previous iterations. But when I tried the nunchuck + wiimote controls it turned into the Mario Kart magic I've come to love with the series. Mark Mario Kart up on the list of Nintendo franchises that did not benefit from Wii controls.
- Shenaniganz08, on 03/23/2009, -2/+5I 100% agree wtih Loncannon
Its the difference between a touchscreen keyboard and a real keyboard. A touchscreen keyboard you hope you touched in the right spot, with a real keyboard, there is a tactile and audible click confirming it ( there is NO guess work) - TomFrost, on 03/23/2009, -2/+5What's the difference between the gamecube controller and nunchuck+wiimote? Oh no they're not permanently affixed?
- the2989, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Practice makes perfect, I've got the wiimote tilt down to an art. Some of my friends swear by the joysticks, but I usually beat them by a mile.
- wkeown, on 03/23/2009, -4/+7Hardcore karters use the wheel all the time.
- twertyto, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3The steering wheel is too sensitive in my opinion. For example doing a wheelie with the wheel always makes me turn off pace. I found the classic controller to handle better...probably cause I've used it so much in the past.
- maduin, on 03/23/2009, -2/+4that's like saying Mario Tennis is a Mario game, or Mario Golf, or Super Smash Bros is a Mario game. Mario games are the main Mario franchise, Super Mario Bros 1 2 and 3, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, etc.
- johnlucas, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3Just because a game has been already released doesn't mean the discussion has to end within that game launch window. You ever heard of replay value? Games can and have been played for years...centuries even! Millenia in some cases. You shouldn't let the publishers train you into thinking a game is only as good as its launch period.
More people own it now & I thought it would make a good topic of conversation since the game has been more explored.
John Lucas - EMGroup, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Gamecube controls would have been perfect if the trick button wasn't on the D-Pad.
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2They rubber-band more with online.
- Halokhan, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Thats good advice for a 5 year old, but what about college kids who are competitive. Losing sucks! The only way to have fun is to win.
- ithejosh, on 03/23/2009, -3/+5its ***** called MARIO kart
- bjs3171, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2Who cares? They royally ***** up Battle Mode, and that's all I really cared about. The mandetory time limit is incredibly anti-climactic, and not since the original SNES version, has Battle Mode been remotely strategic in gameplay, without the ability to jump over barriers with the feather.
But yeah, tilt steering works great in this, and excite truck. - N0DIGGITY, on 03/23/2009, -1/+3I've yet to find a game where I prefer the motion controls. I actually like the gamecube controller better!
- twertyto, on 03/23/2009, -0/+2I personally use the classic controller since I find it offers the best control for me. I think that if all styles of play were perfected the wheel would be the best controller. It's more sensitive than the other options so therefore it is hard to master.
- bjs3171, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1wow. are those iron outsoles really heavy?
- afterlife23, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1dougman82 got it right, plus they shoud've added custom karts and bikes.
- bjs3171, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1i don't get it. What's the point of having a wii if you use Game Cube controllers?
- KrustyTClown, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1The original Mario Kart was designed for use with a game pad so thats what a lot of us are use to.
- Dougman82, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1Yeah, I agree. I guess I was just thinking about multiplayer.
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1What a stupid question, bjs.
- Shadic, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1***** yeah, the feather was the greatest power up ever.
- robwhite1979, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1This is true... but those clever folks at nintendo could probably figure something out :)
- Awezing, on 03/24/2009, -0/+1I'm using a signature.
Awezing - inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1I didn't see any. wierd.
- RobotKeaton, on 03/23/2009, -1/+2Didn't this game come out about a year ago?
- johnlucas, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1electrikyle, that's EXACTLY what I was hoping to hear from the article. The game allows players to debate which style they prefer most in action. There's no right or wrong. GC/Wavebird, Wii Classic Controller, Wiimote/Nunchuk, Wiimote solo, Wii Wheel. Whatever you feel is best you try. And the reward is in your win.
Every style plays slightly different & that's the beauty of the game. Thank you for your reply. :-)
John Lucas - N0DIGGITY, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1 me too. Long live the cube!
- EtherGnat, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1I always hear people say this, but it almost never happens to me. I can finish first against the computer almost every single time. In online play it's a bit more of an issue, but generally still adds to the fun for me.
- fictionalOne, on 03/23/2009, -0/+1They should focus that competitive drive towards their career/education/sports. Unless they aspire to be a professional Mario Kart Racer, then my previous advice still stands.
- ButchersBoy, on 03/23/2009, -2/+3Super Mario Kart is the best. Period.
