- christoast, on 09/04/2008, -0/+1293D screen was about a billion times better then i thought it would be.
- endlessoul, on 04/11/2008, -0/+122This man is a genius. His Wii projects have expanded the possibilities and capabilities of video gaming. Nintendo needs to hire him. Now.
- Otium9, on 04/11/2008, -0/+75So true what he said about researchers embracing internet video. I can't believe how far this guy has come and how fast he did it.
- lansuggs, on 04/11/2008, -0/+64Amazing demos. One thing that impressed me over and above those was that he seemed like quite a well spoken dude considering that he was just a random researcher. +1 for good public speaking.
Can't wait to see some Wii games utilizing that head dealy! - finalblue, on 04/11/2008, -0/+39His projects and Youtube presentations: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/
- lonedust, on 04/11/2008, -1/+38Forget about next gen gaming.. this is the future of learning.
- lorductape, on 04/11/2008, -3/+37The wii is going to be like the DS- at first it seems like a waste of technology, and all the games for it are better played with the gamecube controller. However, we get enough innovation like this, and other games that are starting to be announced for the wii, and it just might become the best of the three.
- nickzee, on 04/11/2008, -0/+32This is awesome
- djuniah, on 04/11/2008, -2/+27Don't worry, one is on the way. I'm currently part of a team developing a PC game based on VR head tracking with the wii remote. Look for more info in a month or so
- exomni, on 04/11/2008, -2/+26Does he realize he just wrote "Hell!" on the white-board?
- themastersb, on 04/11/2008, -3/+27Hell!
- Hefelumpman, on 04/11/2008, -0/+24Taking fairly cheap hardware and creating products that compete with products that cost thousands? This guy is a genius, pure and simple.
- stattek, on 04/11/2008, -0/+19It would probably look equally impressive in person if you were the one wearing the head tracking unit. Watching someone else using it ruins the experience because the computer isn't responding to the location of you head, and thus looks like any other 3D simulation you would see in a game or movie.

- >mark, on 04/11/2008, -0/+18so simple and yet so freaking awesome

That aught to just about cover the bases. =P - herodrink, on 04/11/2008, -0/+15This has been around for a while now. It is good to see there is still solid interest. There was another developed using the Wiimote for a Minority Report-esque feel to digital photography... can't remember the link though
- jonamerica, on 04/11/2008, -0/+14It's great that there are intelligent people out there, who can take good products and use science to make them better. Of course, it only really works when corporate owners of those products don't act like fools and claim that improving something is somehow stealing intellectual property or breaking copyright laws.
- bootie, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12Amazing what 60$ can do
- InitialDMP5, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12he isn't a game developer and I don't think he is trying to pursue a career in gaming. He simply found the IR functions of the Wii Remote interesting as a researcher.
I think he has much higher aspirations then working at a game company. I don't doubt he already has a great job. Nintendo would be smart to seek his guidance for a very hefty fee though! - jjpertusch, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12this guy is a ***** genius.
- InitialDMP5, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12its nerves. When you have a lot to say, and you are nervous, you take short breaths, so you are forced to inhale more air every time you speak. If you were giving a presentation in front of many established and intelligent researchers, I'm sure nerves would have an affect on you. I think overall his presentation was great and he summed up what he needed to say and show quite nicely. If all you can do is judge his breathing, then you must agree as well.
- sh860, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12He's still a grad student at Carnegie Mellon. He needs to write his phd thesis before he goes anywhere!
- shiftless, on 04/11/2008, -0/+11Poor guy, he cleverly hid that with a window though!
- gaijintendo, on 04/11/2008, -4/+15I really want to play that 3d breast game.
- pak314, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9Would be nice to hook up that 3D display feature to Compiz Fusion software. Then we have a real floating cube effect.
- sleeknerve, on 04/11/2008, -0/+9why are you on digg??
get busy and develop that game!! - recruz, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8imagine playing an FPS with head tracking ... you run up to the corner of a building, and you can't see around the corner ... then you just move your head slightly around the corner to peek around the side --- and then BLAAAMMM!! head shot!!! DOOHhh!!! I can't wait!!!!
Or how about a racing or spaceship game (x-wing anyone?) - you're racing (or flying), and you can look around the side to search for any baddies to side, above or below you! sweeet!!
What other ideas can we come up with? - steger, on 04/11/2008, -0/+8imagine super mario galaxy in 3-D? talk about motion sickness.
- YoctoYotta, on 04/12/2008, -0/+7*****
- InvaderDem, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7I agree. In my opinion, the Nintendo Wii is the beta for the next generation of gaming. For the longest time it's been a battle of graphics. Well, it's getting to the point where graphics are hitting a ceiling and we (and by we I mean the human eye) won't be able to see any more improvement in graphics. The Nintendo Wii took a different approach and is working with motion-sensing technology. I'm pretty sure that by the next wave of gaming consoles, all systems will have motion-sensing technology.
Some people scoff and say it's a gimmick, but once people get used to the idea of working with motion-sensing technology, run with it and get creative with it, it'll be amazing what can be done. - MixMastaKooz, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7Actually Exomni is correct. It looks better when you use a single source of sight: one eye or a camera, when viewing the wiimote headtracking stuff. Having done this hack, I can pesonally attest to it. You need shuttered glasses to get the full effect of 3D. Using your stereoscopic vision without a shutter actually diminishes the 3D effect.
- diablo75, on 04/11/2008, -0/+6Don't forget that head tracking will likely be integrated into Compiz Fusion.
- monsterette, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Wow!...he makes it sound so simple.
- TotalHalibut, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Wow, you're a truly upstanding member of society aren't you?
- balomenos, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5very cool stuff, new media rules!
- Timdegreat, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5I'm sure this guy is already getting job offers. I'd be handing out my resume to Nintendo if I were him.
- rockefeller2, on 04/12/2008, -0/+5***** it, just quit college and "go pro" like basketball players do.
- koko775, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5And have them control his work, rather than it being open for everyone to use and implement? No thanks. He's doing fine outside of Nintendo, and going inside wouldn't really help him spread the tech.
- DomZy, on 04/11/2008, -3/+8All I can say is...Wow
- sirbenofwhite, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4he just used the dot for the exclamation point for his 'o'
but im sure he just wanted to slip a little funny in there... - ByteGuerilla, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4Your dedication to idiocy is commendable. It's been a while since I've seen someone waste this much time writing inane comments that serve only to cement your name as an imbecile.
- ligyron, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Finally a TED presentation that's concise and straight to the point
- Dundasbro, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4I must say your retarded self-censorship amuses me greatly. I would predict you are... 13... 14 if you happen to have down syndrome or something.
- Kentj1, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4He reminds me of Dr. Bunsen from the Muppets
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1ayQelkb1uk&feature=rel ... - TotalHalibut, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4Well for one I'm capable of stringing together a coherent sentence, which means in comparison to you, I'm a ***** demigod.
- MixMastaKooz, on 04/12/2008, -0/+4A bit...it doesn't look like you're looking into another 3D space. If you watch Johnny Lee's video, the camera, being attached to the eye glasses, looks as if you're looking into a room within the LCD screen. When you do it in person, it's cool, but it just doesn't feel as if you're looking into another 3D space unless you close one eye. For a FPS, closing one eye isn't fun and could throw off your balance if you're standing: something that happens a lot on the wii.
- christoast, on 09/04/2008, -0/+4lol what?
- kowalzki, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3Johnny Lee is not about theoretical works. He's about practical application. Guess what is more important?
- inactive, on 04/12/2008, -0/+3Except Nintendo won't hire him cos they consist of an inner Japanese clique and all other members of the company are 'outsiders' in their fascist infrastructure. Now digg me down fanboys even though you have no idea what they're like on the inside!
