- chocobomog, on 11/10/2007, -15/+70Agreed, the big games everyone is looking forward to now on the Wii are new versions of old staples like Mario, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, etc,. People play those games for the fun, nostalgic content, not the innovative way of controlling them (like Wii Sports). In that aspect the Wii is competing against the PS3 and 360 and is completely outclassed. In 5 years those systems will have some of the best looking (not to mention fun) games around. Think of what the next versions of games like Bioshock and Ratchet and Clank will look like in 5 years. The Wii can't compete graphically with games like that.
If the Wii's big games aren't being played for the controls then what is the point? In order to last 5 years the Wii needs more must-have "Wii Sports" games which thrive on the innovative controls and are not just updates to old franchises with a few motion controls tacked on. The Wii Sports- type of games are what make the Wii shine and currently it is lacking. Instead we get shoddy ports of PS2 games, mini games, the occasional first party sequel, and an occasional third party gem which is largely ignored by the mainstream gamer (Zak and Wiki). - mywhitenoise, on 11/10/2007, -20/+74I'd honestly be surprised if it lasts up until 2010.
- xerus, on 11/08/2007, -6/+53No matter what happens, the same people will be posting online about how the Wii has no games. After Wii Sports, Excite Truck, and Zelda there was a time where I didnt play many games. Then I picked up Trauma Center, Super Monkey Ball, gave Warioware a spin, then Metroid Prime 3, Mario Strikers Charged, and now Zack and Wiki with some Battalion Wars II on the horizon, with Super Mario Galaxy soon to come.
After playing all these and still seeing the same "Wii has no games" comments I'm just dumbfounded as to what people's expectations are. - skywake, on 11/08/2007, -1/+35Sounds like the NES all over again.
- KingGoonie, on 11/10/2007, -20/+53lol.. "can't compete graphically" Perhaps you havent' noticed it can't compete graphically right now... its not stopping it. DS can't compete graphically with PSP.... PS1 coudlnt compete graphically with N64.... are you seeing my point. ITS THE GAMES THAT WII HAS, AND THATS WHAT MATTERS.
- KnockoutNerd, on 11/08/2007, -2/+33Hopefully they will continue support past 5 years but have a new console come out.
- airwalkery2k, on 11/08/2007, -3/+32This is why I love competition. As a Nintendo Fanboy, I know Nintendo would love nothing more to stop innovating and create a status quo. If it weren't for competition from SEGA and later from others, we'd still be on the NES. It took a lot of pressure from increasing Genesis sales to finally get the SNES out in America.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -4/+23anyone who hasn't experienced wiisports for more than 3 days won't understand if it's really worth it or not and will probably get one so that's what nintendo is banking on
- CheezIt9109, on 11/12/2007, -4/+21"After playing all these and still seeing the same "Wii has no games" comments I'm just dumbfounded as to what people's expectations are."
Games marketed towards adolescents and immature men focusing on violence, sexuality, and other juvenile tastes? - atomicpoet, on 11/08/2007, -3/+19http://www.metacritic.com/games/wii/
Most new games have scored 75 or above. - chingy1788, on 11/08/2007, -3/+19lets not forget the virtual console, though not originally made for Wii, you can play them on the Wii
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -1/+16I'm going to be getting an HDTV very soon, and i have a Wii, but also a 360. I like both very much (honestly though, my online gaming remains on my PC), and I have yet to try the PS3, but I'm sure its also a good console, just at the stage 360 was at, respectively, when it was at that point in its lifetime, which explains the low amount of good games that are available.
Now that i have seen what 1080p can do (which regrettably I have learned my 360 will not support... only 1080i :( ) I just don't see Nintendo going 5 years down the road without some other project, if anything just to compete against Microsoft and Sony in that market.
As we move into the future, more and more people will probably get an HDTV, and eventually maybe even one of the new DVD formats (most i think are like myself and are waiting for a clear winner of the two formats).
I guess we will have to wait and see. - Mrstupid7, on 11/08/2007, -3/+18Graphics are the only reason why I buy any games. The graphical detail on the dots on Guitar Hero are so astounding in 1080p that it makes the game about a million times funner.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -5/+20Great, more than five years I have to wait before the REMOTE CHANCE that I might be able to play an actually online Nintendo console. And that's what I told myself during the GameCube years. DOWN WITH FRIEND CODE SHENANIGANS!
- CheezIt9109, on 11/08/2007, -0/+13"new versions of old staples like Mario, Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, etc,. I personally play these games because they are among the very best in the entire industry, and they suite my tastes. Oh, by the way, Mario Galaxy currently has a 97 on metacritic. I wouldn't call that outclassed. - xerus, on 11/08/2007, -2/+15So what you're saying is that the Wii would be great if it had the same stuff that other consoles had? Thats not really the reason I bought mine. Seriously.
- atomicpoet, on 11/08/2007, -2/+14Keep in mind you are an early adopter. Most people -- grandma included -- are perfectly content with their 480i standard television. And it is the grandmas of the world that are currently Nintendo's new audience. Not to say core gamers are *no longer* the audience, just that they're not the new audience.
- Misanthrope, on 11/08/2007, -0/+12You know it never occurred to me to stand up while I play Resident Evil on Wii. It's not really that kind of game. It's much better while sitting down. Maybe you just don't really understand the difference between a game where you need to stand and one where you don't. Maybe the Wii is too "deep" for you...I didn't think it was possible, but you make me wonder.
- lacronicus, on 11/08/2007, -3/+15I think we can all admit that the wiis graphics are in fact a lot worse. Sure, that doesn't make it a worse console, but lets be realistic here. On that note, the entire idea of next gen games is not to look pretty, but to use that extra power to make the games better. Take assassins creed. Sure, it looks pretty, but where it really shines is the AI and the environment, things that only processing power can get you on that sort of scale, and things that really make the game unique. Sure, not all next gen games do this, some do just add some extra polygons here and there, but they are only as common as games on the wii that tack on the controls. It all depends on how the developer uses the tools they have. You can do some great things with the faster systems that the wii couldn't do, and you can do some great things with the wii that no other system can do. Don't discount either way of doing things.
- Hazardc, on 11/08/2007, -1/+13All xbox 360's support 1080p, it's just they do it over component if they're not one of the newer hdmi models
if 1080p doesnt work it's your tv's fault for not accepting 1080p over component. - honeymustardn, on 11/08/2007, -3/+14Wii Sports isn't the only good game out right now.
- ThankTheCheese, on 11/08/2007, -8/+19I love my Wii, but let's be honest -- the graphics are already 5 years behind, they can't last more than an 5 years. I know graphics aren't everything, but you just know that the next gen Xbox and PS consoles are going to have Wii-like controllers AND upgraded graphics, so Nintendo will need to match it to keep up.
- bigbadgoat, on 11/07/2007, -2/+12*Compares PS2 games released in its first year to games like Shadow of the Colossus and God of War 2*
You sure the PS3 can't get any better, graphically? - zengonzo, on 11/08/2007, -3/+13Which makes it ultimately pointless for Nintendo to try to compete on the hardware front.
- roxya, on 11/08/2007, -1/+11To say graphics are at their peak is complete rubbish. Our eyes can only take in so much detail... what?!?! Can't your eyes tell the difference between CG FMVs and gameplay? What about CG in movies, like Lord of the Rings? I don't see anything even remotely close to that ***** on consoles.
- pathy, on 11/08/2007, -5/+15The next iteration of consoles will force Nintendo to create their own - or they'll sink in to the budget market. Or maybe that's where they want to be?
I know it may piss a few people off, but Nintendo could happily lose it's entire 'gamer' market now. What are they selling the DS on? Brain Training. Nintendogs. All those little mini-games, appealing to children (Pokemon, I realise it has a lot of following in older people, but children are still the main audience), or to those that aren't in to such intensive play.
That's also who the Wii is aimed after. I know, it has a few big hitters that gamers love, but with things like Wii Sports, Wii Fitness, and the mass of other games that will be out for the thing just to pick up on the massive hype it has... Nintendo will always have a space for the 'hardcore', but why spend millions developing a game you'll play when they can spend much less developing games for your mother, sell them cheaper and sell more of them?
Maybe I'm cynical. Well, I am cynical, but maybe I still have a bitter taste over Wii Fitness. What a crock of *****. - seanthebond, on 11/08/2007, -4/+14They really should just bring out a new Wii in two years that is more powerful than the 360 and PS3.
- honeymustardn, on 11/08/2007, -6/+15And have it cost like $600? Nah.
- fognozzle, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9He's not saying that the Jaguar = PS3, he's just saying that the most powerful system (even by a long shot) in no way guarantees a winner. Geez...
- CheezIt9109, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9I was implying that the people who discuss the Wii as having no games are the people who expect the games as I described.
- KingGoonie, on 11/08/2007, -8/+17Lol... and you AGAIN fail to realize Jaguar was YEARS ahead of the other systems at the time.... what happened to that? Neo Geo was as well... etc etc etc.
You can rattle off the specs all you want, if people don't want the system then they won't buy the system regardless of whats upnder the hood. - inactive, on 11/08/2007, -1/+10Damn... On the one hand, I see your point. The SNES was a good thing. On the other hand, I loved my NES and was sad to see it go (metaphorically speaking, that is). I appreciated the better graphics, but that controller was basically an extension of my hands. Took a long time for me to warm up to the SNES controller (I thought it had too many buttons).
- Misanthrope, on 11/07/2007, -0/+9PS3 is a toy, 360 is a toy. Do you really think that great graphics make a ***** video game anything more than a toy? People get way to serious about GAMES, they are just games. I'd rather spend $250 on a toy than $400 on a toy. They are all just toys, just games...just for entertainment. They aren't serious pieces of equipment, they're nothing all that special. Fun little toys, the lot of them. Don't make it more than it is.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -1/+10How NINTENDO will step up to compete? I think Sony and Microsoft are the ones who are going to have to do the stepping up, considering that the Wii is still winning in console sales, is the only one of the three that provides some actual gameplay innovation in the form of motion controls, and managed to do it while still being the most inexpensive one of the lot.
Given Sony and Microsoft's history I think Nintendo has already anticipated that these two will be copying Nintendo as much as possible next time around. - inactive, on 11/08/2007, -0/+9Hey Farva, what's that place you like to go to, you know, the one with all the crazy ***** on the walls?
- Misanthrope, on 11/08/2007, -1/+10You know, as an adult, I feel it's my responsibility to stifle the notion that "mature" means "shotting people" and blowing stuff up "on the fly".
Are you SURE you're over 12? And by "over the age of 12" do you mean 13? - exomni, on 11/08/2007, -3/+11The DS shows no indication of failing anytime soon, and it's been three years on that.
- TBobes, on 11/12/2007, -19/+27If the Wii doesn't get some good games, they won't even make it through 2009. I haven't touched my Wii in months, because none of the games interest me... (guitar hero is an exception, but I have it on the PS2, and the Wii version is pretty much just new songs with really crappy online play)
- greenblob, on 11/08/2007, -14/+22Besides, the PS3 and the 360 can easily add a Wiimote substitute peripheral with a USB sensor bar and a firmware update.
- cgruber, on 11/08/2007, -0/+8Nes is a bad example, nes cartridges had tons of different mappers that extended the hardware well beyond what was on board the unit.
http://www.bripro.com/low/mappers/index.php - Mrstupid7, on 11/08/2007, -4/+12Because add on peripherals do oh so well.
- CamoChris, on 11/08/2007, -1/+9The people who are looking forward to Mario, Smash Brothers etc. are gamers, but a large number of the Wii's fan base don't fall into this category. They don't follow the development of a game and all the hype leading up to launch, they just see a game in a shop, or see an advert, and buy it if they think they'll like it. I'm sick of people saying Nintendo are relying on their old franchises, it's simply not true. This generation with the DS and the Wii they have been focusing of new franchises like Brain Age, Nintendogs etc. which appeal to a mass audience, much more than in the past. They are also working more on franchises which were new in the last generation on the GameCube and GBA, like Battalion Wars, Animal Crossing and Warioware, these aren't established brands like Mario, Zelda and the rest. These newer games do use the Wii controls, and are different to anything on the other systems.
- EtherGnat, on 11/08/2007, -2/+9When are hardcore gamers going to realize that not everybody is like them? There are as many types of gamers as there are people, and many are having a BLAST with the Wii. My wife and I play and enjoy the Wii all the time. My 60 year old parents enjoy the Wii I bought them, and they hadn't played video games since the Atari 2600. Hell, even my 80 year old grandmother loves Wii bowling and has talked about buying one. I'm not saying there aren't and won't be deep, hardcore games on the Wii. It's not the main focus of the system though. Get over it--The gaming world doesn't have to completely revolve around you and your tastes.
- atomicpoet, on 11/08/2007, -5/+12Maybe in Japan and Europe, but in America it's pretty DOA.
- archer75, on 11/07/2007, -1/+8I find that most people who have Wii's played them alot at first but soon after rarely touch them. Wii sports is still the best game out there for it. I have a ton of free rentals from blockbuster and have been renting alot of Wii games and have yet to find one that is worth buying. It would be nice to have better graphics capability and HD support to give it more longevity.
- EtherGnat, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7The /sarcasm tag isn't there, but I'm sure you can find it if you look hard enough.
- bjs3171, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7all they have to do is improve the graphics, as far as i'm concerned
- Supernova36, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7Yeah, Digg him down, he's definitely serious.
- Zap2, on 11/08/2007, -4/+11have u played online? plus rumble, wireless and speaker in the controller!
- Narcowski, on 11/08/2007, -1/+8It would be very easy for Nintendo to add these features if it wanted to though... maybe they'll do it sometime. What really bothers me is A) lack of voice and B) the "different friend code for every game" thing.
