Nintendo just got 1000 times more awesome - bixby1, on 03/25/2009, -4/+36Pretty humble guy for being a complete badass
- manyworldsofwes, on 03/26/2009, -2/+31Ands then there was Wii Music.
- judahhertz, on 03/26/2009, -2/+20This guy is awesome. Video games wouldn't be where they are today if it wasn't for him.
- dlan4327, on 03/26/2009, -1/+13Thanks for Donkey Kong.
- LocalDocal, on 03/26/2009, -2/+13There are a hell of a lot of douches in this submission who thinks that creating games that sell millions instantly upon release is as easy as baking a pie. Apparently, it doesn't matter that multiple highly regarded developers cite him as an inspiration, and that multiple of his games are considered to be universally influential, and has all became major pop icons.
Then again, this *is* Digg. Here, people sitting on their armchair making $30,000-$40,000 a year thinks they know more about industries they've never been in than the corporations making billions. - DarkprinceArmon, on 03/26/2009, -0/+10Mario and Zelda change dramatically with time. Every once in a while they experiment with a new style or a new play mechanic which may create a dead-zone game form time to time in the franchise, but they use that time to flesh out new ideas for each game.
Taking Mario for instance.
You have direct squeals
Super Mario Brothers 1-2(different)-3(new style, new play mechanic)
Then Mario graduates to a World, but not all that different from what three was like.
Mario World 2 offers a different style without a present Mario while throwing back to the likes of Mario 1 with a blend of Mario World.
Mario shift to 3-D and all play mechanics have to be recreated to stay with in the styles of a Mario game.
Mario is next throw on a Island (Sunshine) and is given a new play mechanic which allows him to spray water. (this was probably not the best game in the series as it added nothing new to the first 3-D game)
Now we have Mario Galaxy a complete retool of the mistakes made by Mario sunshine with a twist to the play mechanics.
The ides come in the play mechanics and styles and not in the creation of totally new games franchises.
However You are wrong to assume that Mario and Zelda are the only games to come out of Nintendo in the past 10 years. - doshindude, on 03/26/2009, -2/+10Wii Music is no instant classic.
- finaldrumgod, on 03/26/2009, -1/+6Fantasy still means anything can happen right? You know, where anything you can think of can become possible, and possibly even ingenious? And where you shouldn't doubt something before you even give it a second glance? Okay, just making sure.
- diadem2, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5His games are amazing. Don't pass judgment on him just because you don't like 3rd party apps he had nothing to do with.
If there were a stock market for people, I'd buy stock in him.
(dugg up because i double clicked report instead of reply and i feel like a jerk for my apparent lack of dexterity) - Cubeforce, on 03/26/2009, -0/+5Pikmin, Wii sports, Wii fit?
Then again, sometimes stuff he comes up with ends up being crap, like Wii music. - snobrder218, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4I'm sorry, Miyamoto was amazing. I lost any creditability for him when Wii Music came out. I'd also give the guy MORE credit if he came out with a new IP. He's beating the ***** out of Mario, DK and Zelda. For ***** sake, stop! At least wait more than 2 years to milk the same ***** cash-cow. Zelda was great for a long time, but now seeing as this is his..12th game?.. the franchise needs a break. I don't like thinking of Miyamoto as a 1-trick-pony (well three) but what else does he have? Once again, Wii Music was/is terrible.
- daridave, on 03/26/2009, -1/+5"Instant classic" is not the same as "classic".... your answer applies to the latest.
To create an instant classic: In 1980, you couldn't, because it was all about the present and the feel of a "classic" was non existent, since the industry was not doing good. You had hits, which became classics. In the 90s, creating an instant classic was about creating a solid game where its foundations were proven on previous titles, and improving on those. Mario milked this, and so did Sonic, until [...] . In this current decade, creating instant classics is a completely different formula: You just need A BIT of originality and good ideas; everything else, you leave in the hands of fanboys. I guess this is why Miyamoto, a man that I admire and respect a lot, is not making those classics anymore. He's still got a bit of that genius left in him, far from it -- and there's still a lot of Nintendo fans out there -- but I think the hardcore fans are mostly gone... or at least, busy playing something else. I'm not saying nobody appreciates him, but Pikmin versus Gears of War or God of War? I'll let you pick. :) I feel this is why we haven't seen any classics from Nintendo or Miyamoto these days -- they're not trying, and when they do (even if so little), we don't respond like heroin addicts anymore. - Valyn, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4Yeah, cause all the Mario games are the exact same because you jump on things. All the Zelda's are the same because you always have a sword.
Similiar themes does not mean a lack of innovation. An example of 'lack of innovation' would be most (but not all) of EA's sports games. - DarkprinceArmon, on 03/26/2009, -0/+4Doesn't make sense.
- ganymede2010, on 03/26/2009, -5/+8Miyamoto is the Dark Jedi Master of gaming concepts. So much of what we see in gaming today was created by this living genius.
- RenegadeRoy, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3I'm going to go with drugs... maybe pot, most likely LSD... quite possibly mushrooms knowing his fascination with them.
- hilo4321, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3***** off for saying "ohh fanboys will digg me down"
i dont care what you say about miyamoto about or nintendo, but when you say that you're just being a complete tool - heidivodka, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3The amount of hours I spent playing that game, some say they were wasted....I completely disagree
- aneirin, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3a short fat italian who says "mamma mia" all the time is a racist stereotype?
have you ever been to italy? - Laug32bit, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3It would be awesome if that is how he got the idea of Donkey Kong
- Valyn, on 03/26/2009, -0/+3His "*****" sells millions of games. His '*****' is worth more than any other developer's ideas in the world. Personally I'm not too fond of Nintendo anymore (wii and the neutered online sucks ass), but you't argue that his touch is not golden.
- so1omon, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2tgc1 - Explain to me again how video games would be even remotely where they are today without Super Mario Bros...
- DarkprinceArmon, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2You are wrong about hardcore fans of Nintedo being gone. Back in the day those hardcore fans where called game freaks. What has happen is a change in definition of what hardcore is. Hardcore was a gamer who would play games for hours mastering every small aspect and technique the game had to offer. Now-a-days hardcore gamer is associated with the rating of a game. If you play M games your hardcore, if you play E - T games your kiddie. I never liked how the rating system changed the dynamic of what determines a hardcore gamer, If I like Playing Boom Blox that doesn't deter me form games like Killzone 2, and vice versa.
As for Miyamoto loosing some of his genius... I wouldn't count the man you just yet. After all he still alive. - ikaruja, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2"But unlike many developers, he likes to watch people having fun."
I hate seeing people have fun, goddammit. - YellowSnowDemon, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2Have you no love for Pikmin?!
- silver26, on 03/27/2009, -0/+2They don't have a greatest hits line on wii... And probably never will.
- Topher06, on 03/26/2009, -11/+13Yeah, sorry, can't trust a guy that says "ideas are everywhere" and his company floggs hundreds of versions of mario and zelda games even to this very day. At Nintendo, ideas are everywhere, else.
- wkeown, on 03/26/2009, -3/+5I wanna be kidnapped from work to play an unreleased game...
- DarkprinceArmon, on 03/26/2009, -3/+5Lots of haters. If you think Mario and Zelda are the only franchises Nintendo has produced in the last 10 years, you are living under a rock. Fresh new Ideas =/= a whole new game. Activision can get a way with producing Call of Duty over and over again without changing the game style and no one complains. EA does the same. Epic will follow soon. Not even going to mention Id. New Ideas are not graphic capabilities, enemy numbers on screen, explosive levels and realistic backdrops. Those are old idea with better polish.
Miaymoto doesn't always get it right, but at least he's willing to curb the ball a little here and there in his games. The best gaming franchise idea I have seen in a long while comes from Microsoft decision to make Halo universe in to a RTS. It shows they are dedicated to keeping some of their property alive for a bit longer and not discard it in the trash with the same old same old sequel after squeal. - bjs3171, on 03/26/2009, -0/+2i honestly can't get past 2 levels in the newest MegaMan game.
- Bean888, on 03/29/2009, -0/+1"...the prototyping stage...can last up to two years. At this point, Miyamoto has a team of half a dozen developers working to create the game mechanics, through lots of trial and error."
That doesn't sound so "Instant" to me. - LostOverThere, on 03/27/2009, -0/+1C'mon, everyone has a bad game. Just look at Michel Ancel. The guy designed Beyond Good and Evil, that game was incredible! And now just go look at Rayman Raving Rabbids 2.
Yeah, exactly. - diadem2, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1He made a monster on a chain in mario bros due to his fear of dogs. Transporting your own idea or emotion from concept to gameplay is not plagiarism.
- Valyn, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1So what is the age limit on playing video games Stali... Peruvianprinz?
If im not playing video games until the day I day, I won't recognize myself. - ELCad, on 03/26/2009, -2/+3Wii Music has sold 2.4 million already. Hardly a failure. I have a Wii and won't be picking it up anytime soon. Maybe when it's a $20 greatest hits title.
- YellowSnowDemon, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1He needs to get a life? The man invented modern gaming, and it's his job.
You're an idiot. - gnooly, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1"Jumpman" was originally designed based on the limitations of 8-bit graphics.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -0/+1non ce!
- RainNIU, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2"ideas are everywhere."
Yeah, and they're recycled to make thousands of sequels and different takes on the same source material. Don't get me wrong, I loved Metroid, Zelda, and SMB, but let's create new sci-fi, fantasy, or SMB-like material instead of regurgitating the same stuff. How can I get excited about getting a new weapon in Metroid/Zelda when I've gotten it already in a previous iteration of the material? - Valyn, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2Smash bros, Mario Kart
Just cause the same nintendo charchters are there does not mean they are not new ip. - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+2Why would you even pay $20 to *kinda* play jazzy variants of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star?"
. . .
Furthermore, nobody said it was a "failure," but to calling it an instant classic is reason enough to get your head examined, IMO. - ZenMojo, on 03/26/2009, -2/+2Correction: He really does mean ideas are everywhere. Case in point, Twilight Princess was originally Wind Waker 2 until public unrest turned it into a snazzier Ocarina of Time and the reveal of Okami at E3 pushed its development back an entire year, at which point it became a snazzier Ocarina of Time mixed with a crappier Shadow of the Colossus and a poorly implemented Okami knock-off.
So he's serious. - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -5/+51: Think of a racist stereotype, preferably a WOP greaseball plumber.
2: Put a mustache on him along with a red hat.
3: Instant classic. - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -1/+1That was the first game in a long time to make me facepalm and be embarrassed to be playing it - and I was alone!
- Valyn, on 03/26/2009, -1/+1I hate Nintendo. I hate the Wii. I hate the stupid ass controls. I hate the lack of online. I hate the ***** Mii's and their vile spawn that invaded my 360. I hate the retarded balance board. I hate how the Nintendo has made video games trendy with their "barely a video game" system Wii. I hate the DS (not a fan of any mobile platform). All my Wii does is act as a powered USB charger for my phone and mp3 player.
All that does not discount Miyamoto's brilliance. - casker, on 03/27/2009, -1/+1I am not going to even bother reading this article. Miyamoto is and always will be the man, but the title of this article should be how Miyamoto created instant classics 20 years ago. He is a great developer, but he just keeps holding on to these franchises formulas for too long. The times are changing just because mario is in 3D doesn't mean the game is now original. I bet if he opened his mind up and made something completely new, he would blow us all away.
Yes fanboys I know I am asking for your wrath, but what ever. - ELCad, on 03/26/2009, -1/+1I don't think anyone buys the game for "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". There's a bit more to game then you would lead us to believe.
And I don't pay $20 for most games anyway, I mostly just wait a little while and pick them up on the cheap. I never pre order anything, but I did buy, at full price plus shipping, Electroplankton and Korg DS. I also have Jam Session for the DS but I got that for $15, but was never able to find the baby sized amp they advertised. I like music creation games generally. Wii Music, while not being as impressive as the DS games I mentioned, still looks like a fun time.
Isn't "instant classic" an oxymoron? - mpoulin, on 03/28/2009, -0/+0You can't win them all.
- trdrstv, on 03/26/2009, -2/+2"... I'd also give the guy MORE credit if he came out with a new IP..."
Not sure if you noticed, but WiiMusic, WiiSports, WiiFit, and Nintendogs are all new IP's. -
