- LordSeth, on 11/12/2007, -5/+86Somehow I dont see this coming into effect as it just seems to logical
- axisofphilippe, on 11/10/2007, -1/+62This seems much too simple to actually work.
- InfiniteNothing, on 11/10/2007, -3/+58Seriously, what are you people putting on your wiis. My flash disk is practically empty
- TheKappa, on 11/10/2007, -10/+47A great idea...
short of an external hard drive, how about online storage? (That way, even your saved games are... heh...saved)
The wii's connected to the internet 24 hours a day anyways... - Rupan, on 11/12/2007, -6/+42This is the dumbest idea ever. I dont want it automatically deciding what to delete. I want Nintendo to man up and let us use SD or an external HDD for games. And piracy? Get real. Just tie the game to the MAC addy encrypt it and checksum it before launch. You wouldnt be able to crack it. This is basically the same system XBLA uses except it uses Gamer Profile instead of MAC Addy.
- robbiedo, on 11/10/2007, -14/+40[puts on Nomex suit]
Whoa! That sounds like something some that Apple would implement on the iPhone. It just makes too much damn sense. - MatttK, on 11/09/2007, -0/+24Mine is filled with virtual console games and game saves. Actually, I just deleted the browser cause it's a massive waste of blocks. I couldn't download Mario 3 the other day until I cleared some space. How hard is it to enable USB hard drives.. :/
- Dameleeman, on 11/09/2007, -4/+26Thats the best solution I've heard. I hope Nintendo actually listens to them because HDD space is becoming an issue and I'm buying less games because of it
- inactive, on 11/10/2007, -2/+24I don't think it makes sense at all, I don't want my system to delete my games without telling me.
The REAL solution (besides a hard drive) is that when you go to download a new game and your memory is full, a menu pops up telling you so and allowing you to choose which games to remove to make the room. Now I can decide what's deleted. - robbh66, on 11/09/2007, -3/+22Since you've somehow, amazingly, have gotten 9 diggs- I'll explain why.
When you run out of space on your wii- you have to delete stuff, whether it be saved games or VC games.
-Saved games can easily be moved onto a dirt-cheap and readily available SD card, but it shouldn't be necessary unless you play a lot of games that keep crazy amounts of statistics.
-When you delete a VC game, it's only off your console. You don't have to re-buy it to download it later. Essentially- that is online storage for you.
Thus in closing, why, with two extremely simple solutions, would Nintendo go through the trouble of developing an online storage system for Wii owners? - iofthestorm, on 11/09/2007, -0/+18Well, it might be slightly difficult to implement, but it's basically automatically doing what they currently want us to do manually so there isn't any real drawback to it. Sure, it might be annoying to have to redownload something you havent played in months because the Wii deleted it to make space for something else, but better than having to do it manually.
- kablammo, on 11/09/2007, -0/+15That's actually not a half-bad idea. ...unless I've take the system to a friends house who doesn't have Wi-Fi.
- JlmAWP, on 11/08/2007, -1/+15The problem comes in, though, with Wii Ware, downloadable content, future channels, and other features that will probably take up a lot of space collectively. 512mb just isn't enough. Period. I'm a very happy Wii owner with 13 games so far, but my stance is firm on this. This feature would be fantastic, but it's like plugging a dam with bubblegum....there's still a huge problem behind that very temporary solution.
I think the problem is that Nintendo didn't think they would be going into online as much or as fast as they have been, or as much as third-parties are pressuring them to. It's not really a mistake so much as it is a change in direction with limited options, but it's still only 512mb.
My apologies for the rant. - LJRod82, on 11/09/2007, -0/+14Glad my and most other peoples ISP's don't work that way.
- Adonai, on 11/08/2007, -0/+14I like this idea from a "its so simple, my mother could do it" perspective (obviously what he was going for to begin with over using SD cards) But honestly, an external HDD is sorely needed. Perhaps not NOW, but very, very soon. WiiWare games like the Crystal Chronicles "Young King" games could potentially be large (from the looks of the character models, we could be talking very large) and to have to "juggle" things like virtual console games into and out of your system - even automatically - is not a good idea at all. If they allow SD cards to be used, which are already a standardized portable media, why not external HDD or USB disks? I could even see Nintendo making a Wii Stand that looks like the current one but hooks into a USB slot because it can be utilized as extra storage for those games or downloadable packs, etc.
Honestly, this is just one area that, as innovative as Nintendo can be sometimes, they remind us how stubborn they can be as well. By the same token, though, Nintendo is the same company that denied a Nintendo DS remake just weeks before they announced the DS Lite, so anything can happen! Let's just hope that external storage can happen, otherwise I will be very, VERY picky in what I download... and that can't be good for Nintendo's bottom line. - freetyme, on 11/09/2007, -0/+11What they need to do is allow use the SD card slot
- Xondar, on 11/09/2007, -0/+11Why not? I bought those games, I should have access to them at all times. When Nintendo comes out with a new console, I expect to be able to download my Virtual Console games for it as well, just as I expect to still be able to play Wii game disks on it.
- silverwolfe, on 11/10/2007, -2/+12Or... they could've thought ahead and included some real--tangible--storage when it launched rather than a BYOM model.
- therearenorules, on 11/08/2007, -1/+10how hard can it be for them to enable external drive use through usb? they can drm the ***** out of my vc games, as long as i have a solution for storing and accessing easily. honestly, i think they're going to give in at some point and release a hard drive.
- maticus, on 11/10/2007, -0/+8Wrong story dude.
- UbIwerks, on 11/12/2007, -0/+8I agree. I can't believe Nintendo didn't do it before!
And for all those who haven't read the article yet, just skip to the last paragraph. :) - inactive, on 11/10/2007, -0/+7Yeah, just like how I won't watch any movie that's not in theaters, any TV show that's in syndication, listen to any music that's not on the current top 40, or read a book that's not currently on the New York Times bestsellers list. /sarcasm
You knucklehead, show some respect. If it weren't for these classics, your precious Halo or whatever you kids are playing these days wouldn't even be here. - Cerebral, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7Finally a sane comment thread here. I'm sorry but I'm going to say it... the more and more all of these little things like this and with the PS3 come out it just makes me realize again how amazing of a job Microsoft did with the 360 and XBL. They solved this problem a long time ago with XBLA games as mentioned above. Aside from the RRoD the 360 with XBL is THE console to try to emulate. Nintendo and Sony take notice. /fanboy_sounding_rant
- itseffinkasey, on 11/08/2007, -3/+10I personally don't like the idea. I have a hard enough time keeping my wii connected to my wireless router since its all the way across and diagonal from my room. I'd like to know whats going on with my system and know which games I have on my wii and which ones I had to delete for other games, or they could let me choose how I wanted to do things and that would be to let me put and external hard drive up to my wii.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -0/+7Super Mario 3 and other gems made in the 20th century are much better than a lot of the games in the wii, xbox, ps2/ps3 library. I guess you're just too young to understand that graphics alone don't make good games.
- looselips, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6Try changing the channel and make sure your cordless phone is 5.8ghz also.
My old 2.4ghz cordless phone always had a dead battery and it interfered with the Wii wireless speed.
I can not imagine why the FCC allowed wireless internet and cordless/cellphones on the same frequency. All of them must have the dumb. - Chicken2nite, on 11/09/2007, -0/+6The one problem with that idea is that you wouldn't be able to play your virtual console games unless you're hooked up to WiFi, thus screwing over th kids who bring their Wii over to their friend's house who doesn't have WiFi.
- robbh66, on 11/09/2007, -1/+7Apparently you don't realize how small cartridge based games are.
- Nabu, on 11/09/2007, -1/+7Its just a simple LRU (cache) replacement policy and should be real easy to work into the Console
- DeathfireD, on 11/09/2007, -0/+6This is where Nintendo should set up account folders online for users. Via a database they could keep track of all the games you have paid for and downloaded. Then in the Wii, give the user an option to have Wii automatically upload the players saved data into their "online account folder". This way, if the person ever does have to delete a game, they wont loose their saved data. They can just download the game for free again and then request their saved data from their online player folder. This would also be great for friends to share their saved data with each other when visiting.
- Alphateam, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Also...I could be wrong, but isn't the save file independent of the game itself?
It could keep the save file, which is small, and delete the game file. - Cerebral, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5I haven't purchased any VC games on the Wii but i'm pretty sure you can move the channels. Like I said unless you are referring to once you get inside a particular channel. Otherwise you hold B and A and it will drag your channel to where you want it.
- Cerebral, on 11/10/2007, -0/+5What macweirdo42 said and the fact that there is no way that you've played ALL of them before anyway so they would be NEW to you regardless of how OLD they are :)
- 9a3eedi, on 11/08/2007, -0/+5Exactly what I was thinking. It's never too good if your wii decides what to delete and what not to, and you have no idea what's going on behind the hood. It's your files after all.
- worldsbestgamer, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Can't I just put them on a card and transfer them on PC or get a bigger card. SD cards are dirt cheap.
- IndigoMoss, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6Knowing Nintendo they probably will support it long after the Wii is dead. If you call Nintendo they still have support for the NES and SNES (at least from the last time I called them which was about 2 years ago,).
- ahsteele, on 11/09/2007, -1/+6They actually dropped support for the NES and SNES last month.
http://www.destructoid.com/this-is-the-end-my-only ... - spyrochaete, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4But you can be sure that Google paid Nintendo big bucks to have their search engine displayed as one of the few default bookmarks. Google would be the champion in this situation if they stepped in to rescue everyone's saved games.
- Linh, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4hold A+B... drag and drop in the order of anything you want
- jdevilz, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4This is a viable solution for now, but when the wii ware service launches this would still handcuff the developers to utilizing the internal memory of the wii instead of a larger hard drive source.
- souljaboytellem, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4I don't know what other people are putting on theirs, but i'm putting on "poke the president", it's 50x better with a Wiimote
- 9a3eedi, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4Thing is, how the heck are we supposed to put in Wii ware? I mean, VC games are quite small in size and all, because they were for past-gen consoles that were 2 generations behind, and they dont get higher than 64Mb. However, Wii ware will use this gen hardware, and we expect it to do it at its fullest. However, 512Mb is just too limiting, even for one Wii ware title. I can't understand how developers would be able to pull off a game like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles without it being heavily compressed to the point that it's ridiculous (horrible loading times because of decompression, crappy textures, etc.)
- daridave, on 11/09/2007, -0/+4I'll stick with SD cards, and while I understand the problem of piracy, I simply say to that: ***** it. Do you have any idea how many virtual console downloads have been going on since the Wii is on the market? Do you have any idea how many MILLIONS they're making out of it ? I think they really can afford the RISK of enabling SD cards for storage and all that follows... even if the sales dropped to 10%, they'd still be making a ***** of money... besides, let's keep it real for a second: anyone who wants to pirate the old games has already done it via emulation -- so come on, Nintendo doesn't need a genius method to fix this, they just have to stop being retarded...
- kelowna4life, on 11/09/2007, -2/+6This is ***** retarded, all nintendo needs and should do is add some sort of copy protection to each game that ties it to the specific wii (oh wait havent they done this!), then just make it so the wii will read off the SD slot directly (can someone say firmware update), then a person an go buy a 4gb sd card for like 50 bones and be done with it. Seriously nintendo get with it *****.
- stepnet, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3There's USB ports on the back, some kind of proprietary flash drive would do the job, no problems at all.
It might only be 4-8GB, but that'd solve all our immediate issues. (hell they could even install the missing dvd playing app on there). - grumbel, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3VC games take an order of magnitude more space then they should be, because they all seem to come with a emulator instead of just the much smaller plain rom. I bet you have a lot of duplicate emulator copies on your Wii after a few downloads. Compression could help a lot here.
- cisox, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3It seems to me like this idea would work really well. It would be nice, however, if they had a 'sticky' option so that VC titles that I flag don't get deleted automagically.
- nicko68, on 11/08/2007, -0/+3I love Nintendo's products, but man they can be so stubborn.
They stuck with cartridges during the N64 generation when everyone else was going with CDRoms.
They had some propietary disc format with the Gamecube when everyone else was going with DVDRoms.
Now they refuse to embrace hard drives while every other platform is going with them.
Surely someone at Nintendo must have noticed that having a paltry 512MB of internal storage was going to be inconsistent with their online plans. - McInternet, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3Sure it does. SDHC and SD are pin-compatible. It's just the filesystem and block addressing that's different, and that can be addressed in a firmware update.
