- sinurgy, on 11/15/2009, -2/+89If you think the Wii workout is as good as your gym workout then you're not really working out when you're at the gym.
- mike23w, on 11/16/2009, -3/+33I gave up on both. So about the same.
- fant0m, on 11/16/2009, -0/+23I don't think it's as effective as a good workout at the gym...
But some exercise is better than polishing off a bag of Doritos and playing Call of Duty. Even if it's just a little workout...
I'd still recommend the gym, though. - jloff, on 11/16/2009, -0/+19"While exergames can be helpful in small doses, they are not meant to be replacements for professional trainers who can monitor fluctuations in an individual's body fat and heart rate and modify routines to make them more effective"
How many people using WiiFit would actually sign up for a gym in the first place, let alone get a personal trainer?
If anything, the Wii is a stepping stone to doing "actual" workouts. It's too ideal to say that everyone should sign up for a gym and get a personal trainer. - jaytek13, on 11/16/2009, -1/+16It seems a lot of you don't actually own the Wii Fit to be commenting. It is severely lacking in cardio workouts. Running in place is pretty much the only legitimate thing they can claim to be a "cardio" workout. The rest of them, like step aerobics, do not get your heart rate up high enough to be considered cardio (or even a workout for that matter... though I will admit step aerobics is one of the funner parts of Wii Fit).
It does actually have a lot of strength training options. What you get out of it is purely up to the individual, but the options are there.
I think where Wii Fit shines is in core training. The yoga is actually pretty good (though it is beginners yoga), and the balance board nicely compliments getting the form right.
In any case, whether your at the gym, running/biking, or at home on Wii Fit, what you get out of it all depends on the effort you're willing to put in. - supermanly, on 11/16/2009, -0/+15Who do you think you are? syntaxgs?
- spiderman0505, on 11/15/2009, -1/+16Nintendo should come out with one of those Ab vibration attachments for the Wii Fit
- mejf2loy, on 11/16/2009, -2/+14Wii should all just workout at the gym.
- jasmus, on 11/16/2009, -0/+11I found that after joining a gym, it was the start of endless push of spend more money. Personal trainers making it sound a lot more complicated than it needs to be so you'll buy sessions with them. Diet plans that go into way too much detail so you stress over nutrients and buy supplements. I see you're standing slightly on one foot, you should probably get a massage with this guy we are promoting and go to this chiropractor that advertises on our screens. This, plus watching bogans and meatheads hitting on and female that dares stray from the female only room and being there for hours and not really working out is why I don't go to my gym anymore.
- Variability, on 11/16/2009, -1/+10If you think buying Wii Fit is just as good as going to the gym, perhaps fitness isn't the only field which you are coming short on.
- hatdrop, on 11/16/2009, -0/+8i agree sex is also another fine example of exercise with application
- Valyn, on 11/16/2009, -3/+11One big thing not mentioned. Not all the people who play WiiFit will ever go to a gym. Should be comparing WiiFit to other entertainment. How many more calories do you burn playing WiiFit vs watching a movie. That's the real comparison.
Personally i think everything on the Wii is crap, especially stupid things like WiiFit. But lets be realistic. Most people (that are not trying to look good to the inviewer) don't do WiiFit instead of going to the Gym, they do it or they sit down and play/watch something on the TV. In which case, it's a hell of a lot better for you than watching TV and finishing off the last of the Bon-Bon's. - jasmus, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7All of the boredom of being stationary while you're at it. Buy a bike, that way you at least have to get home, you can't just get off and give up.
- mikemx7f, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7Or, you could do basic gymnastic strength exercises, or start off with pushups, cruches, jumping jacks, pistol squats, one arm pushups, etc. Absolutely free.
- kreneskyp, on 11/16/2009, -3/+9Wii fit is good for getting you back into exercise. Its not at all suited for serious workouts though. Its also more focused at women who tend to just want to lose weight. There are very few strength training exercises, which men want.
Theres another game "yourself fitness" that i think is alot better even though it doesn't use the wii board. The workouts are a lot better, they can actually kick your butt. but again its still only an interactive workout video that mostly focuses on cardio. - rpgguy1o1, on 11/16/2009, -1/+7i broke a sweat trying to break my hula hoop record
- robszol, on 11/16/2009, -0/+6The gym is obviously better than working out with video games.
- InternetTuffGuy, on 11/16/2009, -1/+6I agree that a better workout can be had at the gym, I don't think anyone is seriously debating that issue.
However, my wife was been planning on signing up for a gym membership next week for the last several years. I bought her a Wii Fit and a couple of the other workout games, like Active Life Outdoor Challenge, etc... and also got her some ankle weights and wrist weights. While that gym membership is still scheduled for next week, she's also busy working out 10+ hours a week with the Wii, and I truly enjoy sitting back and watching her when she's working out wearing only her underwear or nothing at all, both of which usually lead to an additional workout routine for both of us.
Investing in the Wii Fit was money very well spent in my opinion. - TrevorBradley, on 11/16/2009, -0/+5Dance Dance Revolution dates back to 1998, predating the Wii by 8 years and is a massive cardio workout.
It may not have got me fit, but it sure as hell helped me lose 75 lbs 3 years ago. Hacker's Diet + DDR FTWeightL - jasmus, on 11/16/2009, -2/+7Yes. It is difficult for some. I am overweight, and the strain that jogging puts on my joints (legs mostly) is enough to stop me being able to run again the next day. I started jogging a few weeks back and got 2 in a row, then a 2 day break, then once more and I was still feeling major discomfort.
I now have to either walk more, spending more time I don't really have to burn the same amount of calories, or buy a bike / join a gym. neither of which I particularly want to spend the money on.
It's not always just as simple as getting off your ass and going for a jog. - smackydoodle, on 11/16/2009, -1/+5If it gets people up and exercising, who gives a ***** which is better?
- hatdrop, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4don't worry mejf2lo, at least i see'd what you did there!
- NomortaL1, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4whole heartily agree. What's better than exercise with application?
- kelvinbanner, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4That 3 minute run must be a real smoker.
- mikemx7f, on 11/16/2009, -1/+4You could start jogging like 100 feet and increase it slowly. Or just do 10 jumping jacks and go up 1 a day. Or do 1 pushup, 2 pushups, 3 pushups etc. until you can't do anymore. Small steps. I couldn't do a pull up 3 years ago, and now I'm almost to the one arm. Really, very small progressive practice works.
- smemily, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3In my husband's case he does Free Step while watching TV. He was going to watch those shows anyhow, but now he is moving while doing it. Neither one of us was going to go to the gym anyhow, and it's cold outside, so Wii Fit is better than nothing.
- smemily, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3You know what is pathetic? Even in my 4th year of swim team, at 5'5 and 118lbs, I still could barely do pushups. I had killer legs though. I just do not build arm muscle well.
- KyleMistry, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3I doubt the Wii really comes close to being as effective as a proper workout does.
What baffles me is why this even warrants comparison-- is it really that difficult to go for a jog or do a few push-ups every day?
The Wii is convenient, but that's all. It's not going to yield particularly effective results, unless you decide to buy some strap-on weights and get very, very into it. - zombird, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Digging news articles keeps me in shape. I did 3 reps of 20 diggs, beat that.
- Klisk, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3The problem is that you can't lose weight by jogging or doing a "few" pushups unless you're ectomorphic and have a low-weight metabolic set point.
When you're heavier you're not going to see any progress in weight loss without high intensity running and circuit weight training (hour+). Most people staying slim by "jogging" and doing a "few" pushups would never tolerate the workout required by their peers with less convenient body types. - cawfee, on 11/16/2009, -2/+4Buy a stationary bike for ~$150. All of the home comfort with your music and your choice of entertainment without all the sweaty rude people at the gym, and it's cheaper than a Wii too!
- tduffy31, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2"This way I can work out in my underwear in my own house and save an extra hour"
Really?.... - WarriorBlake, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2oh, you mean the ones that SHOCK your abdomen to flex your abs for you. That'll go quite well. As long as you have your finger blood pressure monitor accessory.
- kreneskyp, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2I 2nd the idea of just wanting more strength and to be nicely toned.
- bigfatphony19, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2They're better because I can eat doritos while playing them.
- kelvinbanner, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2It doesn't sound like you've ever been to a gym.
- Klisk, on 11/16/2009, -2/+4@sentinel106 Surviving what? Bloomingdales, shopping malls, and office jobs?
- allisonV12, on 11/16/2009, -2/+4At the gym you have sweat hogs spewing who knows what contagious disease on the metal and rubber grips.
In all probability the A-C filters are clogged and dirty recycling the same filthy air day after day.
Then add the bacteria breeding ground of the steam room and Jacuzzi.
Add some dick shaving thier pits and pubic hair over the sinks
Wii wins - sgxyay, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Konami should have rebranded DDR as some workout-focused software and cashed in like crazy on the wii fit craze.
- offspring06, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Why would you want to be scrawny? I'm working towards a happy medium of being slimmer but with a muscular build.
- Shinku3, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1What? There are as many Strength training exercises as there are yoga exercises. I don't understand what you're saying.
- kreneskyp, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1let me rephrase. The wii does not have strength training that allows you to add more resistance.
Yoga does work but its more limited in how you can progress compared to free weights or gym machines. Sure you can change the duration, interval, and number of sets but once you reach a certain point you're stuck. You can't add more weight because the only weight involved in yoga is your own body.
Unless you're very out of shape you can progress through most of the strength exercises in wii fit in a very short time. - Shinku3, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Buy wrist and ankle weights? If you want a complete strength training regimen you're going to need access to things like extra weight besides your body anyway. Wii Fit is just a way to get started.
- harinezumi, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1I find that buying a Perfect Pushup set (and actually using it every morning), jogging between the office and the parking lot, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a perfectly sufficient amount of daily exercise to keep myself in shape.
Why waste time and money exercising at a gym or in front of the Wii when you can incorporate exercise into your daily routine? - Shinku3, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1I don't think that's fair. Yes it's not the same as going to boot camp, it's not the same as getting a personal trainer, or joining an exercise class, but it is still based on traditional exercises. If you do it long enough, and you do enough of the exercises, you will get a work out. Given the obesity crisis we're going through right now, it seems kind of ridiculous to argue that it's not exercise just because it's in the video game medium.
- revslaughter, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Need to buy a floor?
- MrFisty, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Totally agree with the cardio comment. There is a lot of filler on there that merely looks like exercise but it's just not fast or long enough. But yes, some of the strength stuff is good, moreso when you unlock longer times and more reps.
My girlfriend does actual yoga and she's commented that the yoga in Wii Fit is extremely basic and not really likely to give you a good workout. Though as she puts it: "It's better than you sitting on your arse all the time". - Trichomonas, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Just eat less and watch how many calories you eat. You can also walk more and do some strength training at home. Just start slow and work towards a goal. You can start by just walking around the block every day and increase it to 30-60 mins of walking a day. By that time you could try jogging again. Just don't overdo it...you definitely don't want to injure yourself and have to pay medical bills.
Also, I'm not saying you have to join a gym in order to lose weight but saying that you don't want to spend money on it is a bad excuse (unless you're very broke). Joining a gym isn't that expensive....eat a few homemade lunches instead of buying (better or you anyways), maybe re-evaluate a decision to buy something you were going to and you'll easily have the $30-50 needed to join for a month. -
