- priegog, on 03/30/2009, -8/+31Boy oh boy.
Waninkoko is just a leecher of the scene shadowing and taking credit for the work of others. This is just the latest in this kind of behaviour.
More about this from marcan's blog. http://hackmii.com/2009/03/my-6-hour-trip-to-the-d ...
This guy is real deal, and actually works towards allowing people to run homebrew on the wii, rather than the lucrative (and illegal) bussiness of pirating. - matthewf01, on 03/30/2009, -0/+13It was added last week in System Menu 4.0 firmware update.
Unfortunately it also locks out the Twilight Hack, so if you haven't used the TH to install the Homebrew Channel, DO IT NOW before you update your system! - TVarmy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10Actually, the USB was just patched to 2.0 in another softmod, the Wii was capable of it the whole time because of how the USB hardware is set up, Nintendo just set it up at USB 1.1 speeds, likely to prevent piracy.
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -2/+9:facepalm:
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -3/+10I don't understand why Nintendo haven't offered this G a job yet.
- TVarmy, on 03/30/2009, -1/+7You can load Wii games via a USB hard drive through this softmod. This means you can play backups (and possibly pirated games, ahem...) and they will load faster than from a DVD. This saves space and is more convenient than finding the game you want.
Oh, and yes, the hacker is from Spain, if that's what you meant. - barc0001, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6I can see the use for this. My Wii's out of warranty and it's optical drive is starting to flake out. If I had a way to load my purchased games onto an external USB device so the optical drive didn't have to do any work day-to-day, that would extend my Wii's lifespan dramatically.
- TalahRama, on 03/30/2009, -1/+6This is not an April Fool's joke. People apparently kept trying to leak it, but it was sort of irrelevant, since it required a cIOS that Waninkoko hadn't released yet.
Someone else is working on running GameCube games off of the SD card, but it's still a work in progress. I think it can't do audio or something. Does this one also do GC games?
Another note: it is likely that an ISO shrinker would have to be used to load games, since they would be over 4GB otherwise, which it would not be able to load. - andrewober, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5I can confirm that its real. I've ripped 3 games (A real Wii Sports, A real Mario Kart Wii, and a pirated copy of Mario Tennis Wii) and they have all worked great. The GBATemp.net forums are lit up right now.
I had issues after installing the cIOS ver 9 and running the USB loader that said "Could not start USB Subsystem". Tried a different USB to IDE converter and it worked fine after that. It's obviously somewhat buggy now but it does indeed work. - anawnymoose, on 03/30/2009, -2/+7Well, seeing as marcan never releases any of this code that he could supposedly write blindfolded, people who want to play backups (guess what, I've never pirated a wii game in my life and find this useful) have little option. My games are generally unreadable after a couple years, and at $40-60 a pop I'd rather have working software that will play backups than a smug sense of satisfaction as I open my wallet for nintendo and pay twice for yet another game.
- insanebrain, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4your screen.
- Shadic, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Most of the homebrew stuff isn't actually for piracy. There's a lot more applications for other things, such as being able to load games of a different region.
Meanwhile, I mostly use mine for code files. - Dohko_Xar, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4If you can't beat him, make him join you
- aladrin, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Not you, apparently.
- wideawakewesley, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Read the link
- Data33, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Well, you shouldn't update at all, imo. But after you have homebrew channel installed, you can update without losing the HBC...
- TVarmy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3If that were true, there'd be at least five USB loaders out by now. He's not the only person who thinks a USB loader would be useful.
- mcbarron, on 03/30/2009, -3/+6Wish I could digg @priegog twice - Waninkoko is a rip off artist.
- randoof, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3apologise for the n00b question, is it safe to update after using th twilight hack?
- MacHarborGuy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Twilight Hack died with the 4.0 patch, at least via the SD card since you cannot copy saves from SD back to internal flash.
- IdanE, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2This is just pure ignorance. I have a wii with a faulty DVD drive (thanks to my little cousin) which has trouble reading discs half the time. The Wii isn't officially sold where I live, so I need to either buy a new console or send this one to a friend in the US who can get it fixed and send it back - costing about as much as a new console.
OR, I could dump my discs onto a portable HDD, and solve this problem.
Also, I have a bunch of PS2 games that became unusable after a while. Being able to store the files on a hard drive would have enabled me to actually play FFXII last week like I wanted. I'd really like to be able to avoid this with Wii games....
But yeah, people will use it for piracy, so might as well screw over all the people who actually want to put it to good use... that makes so much more sense! - diggduggDOOM, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2@Data33 "Well, you shouldn't update at all, imo"
Some new games come with system updates, though, right? Can you circumvent this update and still play the new games? - earthceltic, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3So we're gonna need an english tutorial page along with mirrored download areas to get a factory default wii to this level. Any takers?
- TVarmy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Yes, but Marcan, a prominent member of Twiizers, said he has other exploits in mind, and is focusing on deciding which one to use. I'd give it a month before declaring the scene dead.
- xboxgmer, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3They already have a cIOS for the 4.0 update that lets you "...now be able to move any pirated[Backups] VC/Wiiware titles to and from your SD card without issue. You will also be able to load [Backup] discs from the disc channel..."
Loading Backups from USB doesn't seem all that far out. - maduin, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2you have no idea what you're talking about.
- kinseyincanada, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3legal game backup collection my ass.
- wideawakewesley, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Actually, if you were in the least bit informed, you'd realise that there are plenty of people purely interested in "homebrew". The majority of the work done on the Wii has been done by someone (marcan) who purposefully keeps any piracy related hacks private and informs Nintendo as and when he finds serious flaws.
- Kevin108, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2Cool, thanks!
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Well obviously, this is not homebrew. But believe me, there's a whole homebrew community that has nothing to do with piracy.
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2here is a ball
perhaps you would like to bounce it - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Because I am responding to the article, look what files he is loading in the photo!
Monster Heroes
Mario Party 8
Mario Kart wii
Yeah this is homebrew alright. Did I ever say homebrew doesn't exist on the Wii? No! I'm just saying this particular article/tool release is geared towards piracy. - Data33, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1@diggduggDOOM
Let me clarify: It's my opinion that you shouldn't update unless you really really have to. Sooner or later, you're going to be forced to update though =( - Philbert, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1Your cat, chasing a laser dot?
- chaosblade77, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1http://hackmii.com/2009/03/my-6-hour-trip-to-the-d ...
- matthewf01, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1@randoof - its generally 'safe' to update after you install the Homebrew Channel, but might want to hold off until the community has a solid set of tools WORKING on 4.0. Currently a few items are still pending.
@Elranzer - as mentioned above, it's a little more complex than just installing Homebrew channel then updating. You'll want to patch your IOS'es (Waninkoko released a tool for this), which reinstalls the 'trucha bug', an exploit previously used to hack the system's IOSes, into the updated IOS slots, THEN it updates. This allows you to copy games to/from SD/system on 4.0 without issue.
You guys can go to www.gbatemp.net , ever since I read the 4.0 update was out during Nintendo's press conf, I've been following the guys on these forums as they brick their systems (hah), and try out different solutions. - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -1/+2Actually it is, xbox-scene.org is rife with tutorials and tools on how to copy games and hack your DVD rive yet there is actually no actual 360 homebrew in existence because the SDK has never been cracked. I'm not sure what the Wii homebrew scene is like but that cover is used quite a bit for the fact people are just copying games for piracy.
- Philbert, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1Thanks for pointing this out, I've been staring at my Wii's blue light flashing and thinking I should check what it is. I never got around to doing this Twilight hack so without your post I probably would have just gone ahead and updated.
- Antialias, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1It would be difficult to do gc games as the gamecube can't see the sd card, usb, wiimotes etc. Who knows though.
- percussionking, on 03/30/2009, -2/+3--Overview--
Part 1: Buy or rent "Zelda: Twilight Princess"
Part 2: Twilight Hack
Part 3: Homebrew Channel - raza7370, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1nice
- Elranzer, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1The Gamecube can read SD cards through its memory card slot, via an official adapter.
- bigdanmahony, on 03/30/2009, -1/+2Also him whining about "his" backup launcher being leaked frustrates me.Most of it was made from already available code.
Complete dick. - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -1/+2Wow, I didn't know you can now play saved Wiiware/VirtualConsole game right off the memory card... awesome! This homebrew usb loader will make it even better (if true).
- olsonea, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1En inglés, por favor.
- TVarmy, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1Funny you should say that... There is a USB loader for PS2 as well. Google it.
Also, in case something happens to your Wii (say, you accidentally patch it to 4.0 and can no longer install homebrew), you can get a mod device called the "FlatMii," which is a passthrough cable for the Wii's DVD drive that lets the Wii load games from a USB connection to a PC or hard drive. It's more patch-proof than the softmods, although simply not upgrading is enough to keep them safe. - barc0001, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1@priegog, one question for you. I understand the vitriol directed at Waninkoko for ripping off others' work and pointing it toward piracy, but how is piracy "lucrative"? How is Waninkoko monetizing this work? Not snark, a serious question.
- prettyawesome, on 03/30/2009, -2/+3Yay! Finally!
Now I don't have to use my SD card to Homebrew, and deal with all the hassle of loading it up. - Elranzer, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1I installed Homebrew Channel before the 4.0 system update on a vanilla 3.4U Wii, confirmed it worked, etc. Then I installed system menu 4.0.
Homebrew Channel still works and can still install WADs to the main menu. However, the unsigned/homebrew WADs cannot run off the SD Card. They can only run from the main menu. - ATL, on 06/20/2009, -0/+1perhaps part of the homebrew software that allows for games to be loaded will be NTFS support
maybe I'm dreaming... -
