- rnast, on 02/22/2008, -2/+50Johnny Lee in '08!
- iofthestorm, on 02/22/2008, -3/+40Damn, that's amazing. I might actually check this game out if it isn't completely horrible. I hope the two Wii remotes means you use one to play and one to head track, because 3 wiimotes would be annoying. But then, this sounds more like an easter egg type of thing anyway. Kudos to Johnny Lee for having his ideas incorporated into a game.
- IllBeBack, on 02/22/2008, -3/+34I wanna get a red laser pointer installed in my Wii remote and then attach it to the side of my head so I will look like a Borg.
Click A to be assimilated, mother *****. - ephemoL, on 02/22/2008, -5/+26This is like the Powerglove, except it'll work and won't suck
- ZephyrNinety, on 02/22/2008, -3/+23Think of the porn!
- psg188, on 02/22/2008, -2/+14We don't need a giant ascii picture in EVERY thread.
- ATLien74, on 02/22/2008, -1/+11Oh man! This is so cool!! I was just blown away by the Johnny Lee video that I saw for the first time a month or two ago... and it has actually crept into a game! At the time I thought, wow this is so ***** cool and simple....they'll either ignore it, or just won't implement it....wow....wow...I can't belive it! Major Kudos to the developers of this game!! THANK YOU!! I had no interest in this game untill now...but now I almost want it as much as GTA IV... ALMOST. :-) I will definitley be buying it though!
And yes, this can totally be done on the ps3 with the ps3 cam and a special lens cap...check it out:

You can bet your ass that if this game blows the ***** up on wii because of head tracking.... Sony will be wanting in on the action! - Moosebri, on 02/22/2008, -1/+10Ok, This is why I believe that the Wii is actually a next generation system. That was AMAZING! And to anyone who says the graphics blow, or the processor is limited, I will give you that. BUT, this proves that video games COULD go in a direction that no one expected, and hence.... NEXT GEN! That was really *****' Cool!
- megaton, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7How do they keep the tracking remote from powering down after a period of inactivity?
- aladrin, on 02/22/2008, -1/+8He needed 2. If you re-watch Johnny Lee's video you'll see he uses the second for shooting at targets, just like Boom Blox will.
- CpMRangerRick, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6I think that just blew my mind.
- Step1Mark, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6most likly it wont power down if its reading the motions from the camera. I could be wrong but the movement of the IR lights might keep it on. or it could be a time based game where you press a on the mounted remote to start the round.
- dako, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6Actual blog post by Johnny Lee on his blog:

:D - etx313, on 02/22/2008, -0/+6With your wang? wangity wang wang? wang.
- skaldicpoet9, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5I hope that this will encourage more developers to try to incorporate new types of movements in Wii games other then your standard waggle.
- DonkeyTonk, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5Even though this is only an Easter egg, it's a very clever one at that. Suddenly this deserving game is gonna receive a whole load more attention. I hope I'm not the only one who wants this game to be succesful so that it inspires more developers (1st AND 3rd parties) to be more creative.
- ParaSwarm, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4That ***** was a workout. After a few rounds you were like Ok, I'm done playing now... please make it stop... pant pant...
- aladrin, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4If you'd watched the video, you'd see a thanks to JL in the credits.
- accelleron, on 02/22/2008, -2/+6While this is possible, the probability that some ***** will try to sell a used one makes me not like the idea.
- sg7791, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Yes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qawFlb4a_w - theaceoffire, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3I just want 3d without wearing glasses. I am not denying that this is all based on that brilliant Nintendo dude, but I (being a glasses wearer) would like 3d effects as well.
Besides, don't you WANT all consoles (And PC's) to offer 3d games? - ATLien74, on 02/23/2008, -0/+3Can you imagine GTA IV with Head Tracking?
Boy-Yoy-Yoing!!! - ParaSwarm, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3ZenMojo fails.
- EtherGnat, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3I think they mean one Wiimote for head tracking and another to play the game. Beyond that you're right, but I'm not sure there's a meaningful difference in actual play. It's true that turning your head would be interpreted as moving farther away by a single remote, and that tracking by two wiimotes could overcome that limitation. In game play you need to be facing the TV to play anyway, though, and if you turn your head very much you're not watching the TV anyway.
- aladrin, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Wow, that guy is -boring-. It took all I had to sit through that.
And then... It wasn't nearly as well done as Johnny Lee's. There was quite a lag time between when you moved and when it updated... and the 3d effect wasn't done very well. it didn't look like you were looking through a window, like JL's did.
So yeah, it's possible... But I worry about the lag time (probably a hardware issue) and the 3d effect (probably a software issue, which could be corrected) and the camera itself... I don't see developers convincing millions of PS3 owners to make IR filters out of exposed film and flashlight parts... Oh, and the glasses... Yikes. - malcolmlo, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Yes, more impressive than this article is this "johnny lee" fellow.
...dudes a badass. - inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2I LOVE the powerglove. Its so bad.
- monkeymad2, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2I was thinking that this would be good if implemented in OS X's GUI,
They all have a camera in the right position and it'd be cool if the windows were "out" from the screen and the shadows were correct - jjpertusch, on 02/22/2008, -2/+4man. this stuff is really incredible. i'd love to see a big studio put this to use. police 911 1&2 in the arcade was so much fun. typical shooter on rails, but you moved your body to do matrix style bullet dodging.
- ultraelite, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2very clever the wii/wang/penis joke sbutle and original, you are indeed a true master of the colloquial English language. Oh wait that's right it's not funny and everyone's heard it about 7000 times.
- ATH025, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3Because the sensor bar isn't a sensor, it's just a couple infrared LEDs.
- samus1225, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2imagine having a room with an lcd projector on each wall projecting a 3d world (the walls would of course have to be movie screens, and the projectors would have to be set on the rear). combine that with johnny's head tracking :-)
- aladrin, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3Yeah, because this wasn't a 'me too' from Spielberg. Grow up. The games today would suck if developers didn't constantly borrow ideas from each other.
- krd1979, on 02/22/2008, -7/+9I suddenly became interested in this game. Having the Spielberg name attached didn't really impress me, but this however, almost makes it a "must have".
- aladrin, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2I don't think you quite get it... You still get some 3D effect from this because your head rarely stays in exactly the same place... So your constant movement would generate the visual clues your mind needs to fake the 3D. 3D glasses in addition might be nice, but they are hardly necessary.
- EtherGnat, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3Why wouldn't it? The video demos look great, and the technology is pretty straight forward.
- theaceoffire, on 02/22/2008, -5/+7^_^ I know! Now if Sony will do the same thing...
http://ps3.qj.net/Developer-creates-Head-Tracking- ... - JudgeMonkey, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Speak for yourself... the problem is we just need a better one.
- ATLien74, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Well he admits he got the idea from J.Lee and even thanks him for the inspiration... He's just proving the concept works on ps3 too. They could easily sell an infrared lens cover that just snaps on to the ps3eye, possibly package it with the first game to use it, then package it with new ps3eyes. And of course they would make some much sleaker glasses...he's just making it work with ***** lying around!
I'm not a fanboy of either console, because I have both... I'm just saying it would be cool to play some games on the ps3 with head tracking too.... especially GTA IV! - Philbert, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1Mine worked great for Super Glove Ball. Other than that it sucked.
- GOJOE, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1This here is why i am so happy i have a Wii. I logged on just to digg this. If this is implemented in 1st party games, gaming will be changed forever. This game went from a not even on my radar to counting down the days. Good on you for getting this feature through the starting gates.
- Philbert, on 02/25/2008, -0/+1"I just want 3d without wearing glasses."
I have seen this done at Siggraph a few years ago. It looked something like a CRT monitor, but if I recall correctly it used a number of panes of glass inside with images projected onto each. What I saw was actually monochrome, but the 3D effect looked just like the Johnny Lee video without the need for glasses. - ParaSwarm, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1I can't wait to play a first-person shooter with this visual mode.
- Lawr, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1ummm, this isn't Johnny Lee's head tracking system.
- inactive, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1
----------------.
/---o MATRIX - Abram730, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1It's you that doesn't get it aladrin.
one issue with the 3D glasses was that eye position needed to be assumed.. that your head was still and motionless.. If you moved your head it messed up the affect and made you feel funny as your brain expects head movements to affect visual input. Head distance could be used to change focal distance, another 3D issue. With head tracking many of the short falls of 3D shutter glasses are solved. You can easily mount LED's on the side of shutter glasses.
There just so happens to be a push to bring back shutter glasses happening right now.
head tracking + shutter glasses = VR.
here is a video

- DrummerAndrew, on 02/22/2008, -1/+2This is spectacular. (Get it? Spectacles? No?)
