- Deeaannooo, on 11/21/2007, -8/+70Here's to the next 12 months! (goes back to playing Galaxy)...
- africansk8er, on 11/21/2007, -6/+61Even if you hate the Wii, you have to admit that it has had one hell of a year.
- JCrusader, on 11/21/2007, -11/+58Its been a heck of a good year for the Wii
Not to mention it had SMG which became the greatest game of all time - BenKenobi88, on 11/21/2007, -9/+48Definitely a good start, and games like Brawl, No More Heroes, Mario Kart, etc will keep me busy through the next year I'm sure.
- laterthandawn, on 11/21/2007, -5/+43And sales would be much higher if stores could keep the damn thing in stock, too.
- Paroparo, on 11/21/2007, -3/+29Congrats to Nintendo for making the biggest comeback in gaming history. I would say turn-around, but we've seen an even bigger change of direction from another company.
The Wii is currently tracking way ahead of the PS2, while the 360 and PS3 are tracking close to the original Xbox, although at least the 360 should surpass it due to launching earlier in the gen.
As far as games are concerned, it had a much stronger first year of exclusives than either of the HD consoles. First year exclusive games according to Metacritic:
Wii top 3: Super Mario Galaxy (98), Twilight Princess (95), Metroid (90)
360 top 3: Gears of War (94), G.R.A.W. (90), Call of Duty 2 (89)
PS3 top 3: Ratchet (89), Resistance (86), Motorstorm (84)
Looking forward to a 2008 filled with lots of Smash, and hopefully much more third party support. - aurorous, on 11/21/2007, -2/+2714 million? in 5 years the gamecube only sold 22 million they're on a pace to eclipse that late next year.
Galaxy is an incredible achievement, Mario 64 took the platforming adventure and made it 3D. Galaxy actually makes use of that 3rd dimension. Running up a corkscrewing level as it spins and then jumping to an upside down rock is disorienting and vertigo inducing... AND IT'S AWESOME!
We also have Smash Brothers: Brawl on the horizon which is looking like it's going to be one of the greatest games ever made. As unsuccessful as the gamecube was viewed to be if you one and had a copy of Smash brothers: Melee and 3 friends it was worth the cost of that system.
I don't know what the hell they pay Miyamoto but it isn't enough. - atomicpoet, on 11/21/2007, -9/+33It's funny that people think the only reason Wii is unavailable is because they are artificially constraining supply. If so, then 14 million is a crazy achievement. That's amazing considering that other consoles haven't artificially been constraining supply and they haven't sold as much -- assuming Nintendo really is constraining supply.
- zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+17I don't think they are. At 1.8 million a month they're cranking them out faster than any console ever has been in its first year. I don't think you can say they're artificially constraining supply when at this rate they'll have outsold the gamecube's entire sales over five years in less than 18 months.
- bpapa, on 11/21/2007, -12/+25Since we're sourcing VGChartz here, shouldn't the headline be - "sales may have possibly passed 14million in 12 months!"
- Murdats, on 11/21/2007, -2/+15Why would I buy a ps3 or 360 when I have a perfectly cabable gaming rig (that costs more then your ps3/360 so apparently i can afford either of the less capable competitors)
I have a wii because it does things my PC cant, unlike the competitors which can only offer me a more restricted intereface (less buttons on the controler) and a restricted, closed system.
and as for novelty value, sure some of the games are fun because of the motion sensing (eg.wii sports) but then you have games like resident evil 4 (and soon to come umbrella chronicles), FPS's which are more fun to play on the wii then the others and all those other awesome games which havent yet come to australia ( :( ) - zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+12How many consoles have spectacular first years? Three 90+ exclusives for one year is pretty good.
- slightlyoffbeat, on 11/21/2007, -2/+13You kidding? Its my wife that's playing the wii!
- carpespasm, on 11/21/2007, -8/+18probably not, most of the people who want one will likely already have one by then, but it'll still sell well I'm sure, especially if 3rd party development of deeper games takes hold more.
- gudnbluts, on 11/21/2007, -0/+10Seriously? Res Evil 4 is great on the Wii. The controller makes it the most involving shooter I've played in god knows how long.
- inactive, on 11/21/2007, -5/+14I logged in just to digg you down, advertiser...
- h4mx0r, on 11/21/2007, -3/+11Over a million per month? Quite impressive indeed.
- dunguyen1980, on 11/21/2007, -5/+13the cake is a lie
- doronster195, on 11/21/2007, -3/+11I want to get one... I can't find any!
- Math, on 11/21/2007, -1/+9Not really when you consider that the 360's been available for sale for twice as long. In 'sales per year released' terms, the 360 is slightly ahead of the PS3 & the Wii is double the sales of both.
- b3owulf, on 11/21/2007, -0/+8Do any of the new systems have a large library of KILLER games??
- Paroparo, on 11/21/2007, -5/+13No, since VG Chartz numbers are extremely accurate.
There's one professional tracking service in the US, and VGC hardware data is within 15% of their numbers on a monthly basis, which happens to be the tracking service's own error margin. Japan has two similar services, and VG Chartz is as far from them as they are from each other. The life-to-date numbers are much more accurate than that due to quarterly reports from the hardware producers and other official sources. European hardware and all software numbers are admittedly much less accurate, but they're getting better all the time.
Anything left to say? No, didn't think so. - mbthompson, on 11/21/2007, -0/+7Wow, a year ago today I (for the first time ever) went to my local Target around 4:45AM and stood in line with other folks, chatting, laughing, playing each other on our DS's, all the while full of excitement over the prospect of owning the most enjoyable gaming system to be introduced to the U.S. I think it was one of those experiences that you just can't repeat.
- WhoDoneIt, on 11/21/2007, -1/+8You're upset because clients are making you money. You should rethink your business concept.
That's almost like saying you are a gynocologist who is totally pissed off because you didn't realize that after you graduated med school you couldn't pick and choose hot, young patients only. - zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+7They've started shipping out 1.8 million every month, so its really not that surprising. If they can keep up the current level of sales for another 6 months, they'll pass the Gamecube.
- b3owulf, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6Strikers, Battalion War 2, and I'll even throw in Mario Party cause my friends love to come over and play
- sauvaget, on 11/21/2007, -1/+7to be honest, i was dissapointed at first. I've had a wii since January. first few weeks were fine. friends kept coming over for a quick round of sports and wario. but after completing zelda the hype wore off quickly. but just a few weeks ago i picked up metroid and it was fantastic. just bought galaxy last week and have been playing it every evening since.
hardly any other games have managed to get AND keep my attention for so long.
and with kart and brawl heading our way next year, I'm sure the wii will get the play time it really deserves.
this is what makes nintendo great, their first party games are always absolutely brilliant.
and to all those so called next-gen gamers who think nintendo games are just for kids... try getting 100% on galaxy and metroid. it stays fun all the way and keeps you busy for days, if not weeks. - MilkDaddy, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6??? - this chart basically shows that they Wii is averaging about twice the sales of the best selling console ever, except in the first couple months when Nintendo had supply problems. I don't think this chart shows that "It's not so much that the Wii is selling a lot but that its competitors are selling so little." at all...
- alexkorova, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6Ratchet is a great game, but SMG is hailed as the best platformer ever.
- REBELinBLUE, on 11/21/2007, -0/+6Which is why you shouldn't buy things that are in sort supply from eBay, because it supports the scumbags who go out a buy as many as they can just to stick them on eBay and jack up the price.
- zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -1/+6Dreamcast was $199 as were most of Sega's other consoles, previous Nintendo consoles were $199 at launch as well. Traditionally consoles have been relatively inexpensive toys compared to computers, $400 and $500 systems are a relative rarity. The NEO GEO and the 3DO are the only two that I can think of that I can think of prior to this generation that attempted such high prices.
- slaystench, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5I want Brawl!!!!!
- BlueSkyfish, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5Right now, they say Wii sold 14.21 million, and they just adjusted their figures in accordance to NPD figures last friday, so you know it sold at least 14 million.
http://www.vgchartz.com/news/news.php?id=644 - b3owulf, on 11/21/2007, -0/+5Ratchet is an awesome game, but I still choose galaxy over it (of course I have both, but 1 is getting played more than the other)
- Lasereth, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4Adjusted for inflation, the Wii is VERY cheap. The issue with the Wii is that its competitors are so much more expensive at launch. PS3 being $600, 360 being $400....and the Wii being $250. Of course the non-gamers and casuals are gonna go for a gaming system that is freaking half the price of its competitors. And yes, it is the cheapest console ever adjusted for inflation.
- zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+414 million in a year. Another 10 million in the next six months. 24 million > total gamecube sales
- ZenMojo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+4For some reason it got 3 75's and a 60...the 60 was for its lack of multiplayer, the 75's because...well, I'm not exactly sure what the ***** they gave it 75's for, but there you go.
- zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Even if you refuse to count Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Zack and Wiki (87) averages out to be just about the same as the 360's top 3.
- Punchbunny, on 11/21/2007, -4/+7Outsold every other 'next gen' console. Pretty sweet :) Well done Nintendo. They did what everyone (except me and Mr Robinson down the road) said they couldn't do :) They're the current market leaders. 1) they have sold more units. 2) they make more profit on each unit than anyone. So they're making more money than anyone else :)
- daridave, on 11/21/2007, -2/+5Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros, Smash Bros... there, I got your 12 months for you. :)
- zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -1/+4Huh, I've not been displeased with the Wii yet. I may only have eight games for it so far, but not having had a Gamecube the twenty odd gamecube games I've picked up for it and the virtual console games I've downloaded have filled in the gaps between releases quite nicely. Certainly the Wii has fared far better for things to play on it in its first year than many other consoles.
- b3owulf, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Ugh! You only had to wait a few hours. I got to mine at 11:00 the night before. I envy you.
- KrustyTClown, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing.
- KrustyTClown, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Sony's $600 is not much different than a $399 dollar console 7-9 years ago.
- WhoDoneIt, on 11/21/2007, -2/+4Can't afford any other game console? Really now, c'mon. Infact, I would love to bet you that the average household income of a Wii owner is great than those who own a PS3. If I was a high school kid who worked at McDonalds and a hard-core gamer who likes to shoot aliens in FPS all the time my choice would be the PS3 too.
Have you ever thought that is why they aren't selling so fast? Maybe it's because the PS3 target group tend to be younger more immature people and they can't afford the system.
Had the Wii been the same price as the PS3 I would have still overlooked the PS3 and gone for the Wii. Hands down. - zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2Similarly there are non-exclusives for the Wii that never made it to the xbox 360.
- atomicpoet, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Actually, it's only one year.
- zeebo, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Technically if stores could keep them in stock the sales would be lower, since they wouldn't be selling. Still, I've seen Wiis on store shelves in previous months in the middle of the week and at odd times, you just won't see that happening now because of both the holliday rush and games like Super Mario Galaxy being released.
- osko2052, on 11/21/2007, -0/+1Ebay. It looks like everyone buys them ad resells them on ebay for a profit. If not you can buy one online bundled with games.
- zeebo, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Except that 7-9 years ago no console sold for that kind of price was successful either. The original playstation is probably still, adjusted for inflation, the highest priced console at launch that has ever 'won' a generation.
