- atomicpoet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Well, as with any change in any industry, there's bound to be upheaval. When it comes to third parties on the Wii, the big winner is Ubisoft and the big loser is Eidos -- who paid dearly for ignoring the Wii. Meanwhile EA caught the Wii train just in time and I think MySims might actually be a hit.
I think the best thing to come out of this upheaval, however, are small developers. Certainly, none of their games are million sellers, but with their small budgets, a hundred thousand copies sold isn't bad. Majesco is the prime example of what I'm talking about.
The best game this month came from such a developer. Two days ago, D3 released "Dragon Blade: Wrath of Fire" and I have to say it's bound to be a sleeper hit. It's a hack and slash that has the motion control perfected. If you want an uppercut, you swing upwards. If you want a quick stab, you know what to do. The graphics aren't phenomenal, but I love the fire effects. I bring this all up because the big publishers had their chance six months ago to release such a title but were instead content to release the same party game over and over again. So in comes D3 who releases a game that, while not entirely original, does not have any similar game to it on the Wii right now.
Now, in six months, we're probably not going to have this conversation. The fall lineup is amazing. I'm going to buy RE:UC. I also think NiGHTS looks pretty cool. But I think the big winners are going to be the small developers. Mushroom Men looks fantastic. - h0ly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Great article. I would add that some game reviewers just don't have the mindset for evaluating Wii titles, and this hurts sales. The premise of this console is that graphics doesn't need to be cutting edge to make a fun game, and still they keep comparing the Metroid graphics to Halo 3, and giving it low scores. It just doesn't apply in the context.
Also, some games are based on really cool and fresh concepts, but still they don't receive enough resources from publishers. Take MySims for instance; building stuff with the wiimote it's a really, *really* cool idea. But it seems they didn't have enough time to really flesh it out (without online you can't share your creations with your friends, nor walk around your city with them, just to name a few shortcomings).
