- bpwwhirl, on 03/07/2008, -2/+87Wow, the Paper Mario screenshot looks great. So nice and clean. Very impressive.
- dinostabOMG, on 03/07/2008, -15/+90"In fact the 32bit PS1 had a number of later games that gave the best of the N64 a run for its money in graphics." Buried as inaccurate. No way, unless you're comparing to very lazy N64 games. This was just not possible with the hardware. Go ahead and digg me down, you know it to be true.
- PrismSub7, on 03/07/2008, -2/+68Best hi-res texture ever: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24472531@N03/23176571 ...
*does a kirby-dance* - joehobbes, on 03/07/2008, -5/+70He did a similar one for the PS1 here:
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sony/ps1/2007/08/en ... - whatthefu, on 03/07/2008, -3/+56I want to play hi-rez Banjo Kazooie so badly.
- fyreboltx, on 03/08/2008, -3/+38I love how these modders and whatnot enhance these old games (for free) and how Nintendo charges $10 for direct ports Ok, so VC games run in progressive scan but crappy graphics (they don't hold up well obvious) with progressive scan is just... smoother crappy graphics. Now, what are people who know about this kind of emulation do? Get a superior version for free or pay $10 an outdated version? Sometimes, illegal actions just make more sense...
Regardless, it's amazing what these guys have done. - Deadpixel1221, on 03/07/2008, -12/+47Inaccurate, the ps1 never gave the N64 a run for it's money in graphics.
- Enfecktion, on 03/07/2008, -4/+36Jet-Force Gemini!
- joehobbes, on 03/07/2008, -2/+30I thought he meant he didn't have a USB controller
- ilikesboobs, on 03/08/2008, -5/+32Mac isn't for gaming. Go back to your Photoshop and make me some new textures for my Mario 64.
- JayBabs, on 03/08/2008, -0/+27Who would have known that little cream puff had such chiseled features.
- doshindude, on 03/08/2008, -3/+29then you must be retarded, blind, or both.
- BugMeNot2, on 03/08/2008, -1/+22The game is not running on the hardware it was optimized for.
- MagicBobert, on 03/08/2008, -4/+25Silly rabbit, games are for PCs!
- daRoach, on 03/08/2008, -3/+23Maybe you should go ask your mom.
- Funman1, on 03/07/2008, -1/+19I would like to see the pics side by side, in the same scene, with the same angle, then with and without the effects.
I can see an improvement, but would be much better if I had side by side comparisons. - inactive, on 03/07/2008, -5/+23I'm loving this. I wonder if this is also possible for the PS1 and other past consoles that we all know and love *Cough*Dreamcast*Cough* xD
- Canadacdn, on 03/08/2008, -2/+20Hey, Nintendo! Do some of this for the VC!
- KingGorilla, on 03/08/2008, -0/+18That can be arranged
- TheKrillr, on 03/08/2008, -3/+19How long has it been since you've seen an optometrist? Because I think your eyes are in need of repair.
- yevkasem, on 03/07/2008, -1/+16is that a compliment?
- karaokekidd, on 03/08/2008, -0/+15I want that cell shaded FF7!!
- NikoKun, on 03/08/2008, -0/+15I've known people who were working on this years and years ago... I used to play hi-rez versions of Zelda OoT and Mario64, on their emulators back then...
I hate to say it, but this is old... But cool enough that it's worth getting to front page even now. - Flame15, on 03/07/2008, -7/+21Your mom's gay...
- supermajic, on 03/07/2008, -0/+14HiRes Zelda ftw. Definitely trying it out right now.
- Lunarbunny, on 03/08/2008, -0/+13Gothic then, perhaps? Goth generally refers to the subculture (unless we're talking in the context of Germanic tribes), Gothic generally refers to the art and architecture.
- nakile, on 03/08/2008, -0/+12I remember reading about this.
From what I understand, the thing that kept the original Nintendo 64 from doing textures like this was it's small 4 KiB texture cache. Large textures were impossible to load, so small textures were stretched out across large objects. Now I'm not saying that the N64 could have done stuff like this, but it could have done a lot more than it did. Quite a big oversight on Nintendo's part. - gameradam, on 03/08/2008, -2/+13I've been doing this with Zelda Ocarina of Time and a Xbox 360 controller. It works great and looks good to.
If Nintendo were smart, they would hire these guys and re-release high resolution texture versions of their old games on the Wii or something. - bryik, on 03/08/2008, -2/+13More like Digg is populated by tons of your mom.
- shauncullen, on 03/08/2008, -0/+11God I hope Rare doesn't ***** BK 360 up.
- BlueTunicLink, on 03/08/2008, -0/+11(>'-')> ^(^-^)>
- freshyill, on 03/08/2008, -0/+10That's a fair comment. People started thinking of 3D as the be-all and end-all for gaming sometime around 1995 or 1996. Truth is, most early 3D games were awful. Storage technology just wasn't there for consoles yet. Plenty of great PS1 games split the difference with beautiful pre-rendered backgrounds. The Final Fantasy games are the perfect example. A possibly *more perfect* example was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which used very little 3D (think save rooms). Perfect proof that 2D games could be better than 3D, and that pre-rendered could still be better than polygons.
- Koskun, on 03/08/2008, -0/+10There is that for certain, and there are some games that do stand the test of time so to speak (SNES Zelda, SMW as two examples), but you've never asked yourself "What would this look like if they could of upped it?"
It's kind of like the first time you played game so-and-so on your old system. Now that you have a nice new system take a look and see how it looks. - whiteguysamurai, on 03/08/2008, -0/+9Wow, banjo really benefited from that, almost looks like a dreamcast game.
- deltron, on 03/07/2008, -1/+10Awesome! Good find. I like the cartoon Mario, and the Hi-Rez Zelda.
- arobar, on 03/08/2008, -0/+9That was the worst analogy ever.
- jman583, on 03/08/2008, -0/+9More on a Zelda retexturing project:

http://i19.tinypic.com/6ahkg0j.jpg - freshyill, on 03/08/2008, -0/+8I'd love to see the sprites replaced for some old 8-bit NES games. Super Mario All-Stars was good, but how cool would a Paper Mario-style Super Mario Brothers be?
- MillionsLivio, on 03/07/2008, -2/+10Just use a wired Xbox 360 controller, it's near perfect for the N64, similar set up and better feel. Plug it in and it instantly finds and installs the drivers if you are running Windows.
- zwaldowski, on 03/08/2008, -0/+8No kidding, couldn't Nintendo just toss in some HQ2x? They don't even have to anti-alias. Just scale it, for *****'s sake.
- joehobbes, on 03/07/2008, -5/+13Emulation-wise, but I'm pretty sure the Dreamcast has a bigger following overall.
But we're still waiting for rock-solid DC emulation. (not to mention the Saturn) - DarthBrady, on 03/08/2008, -1/+9Goldeneye and perfect dark take a Beefy video card to play well.
- arunforce, on 03/08/2008, -6/+14Gran Turismo? Final Fantasy? Metal Gear Solid?
***** please. - thenewkasanova, on 03/08/2008, -1/+8sixtyforce
- Dantetheinferno, on 03/08/2008, -5/+12I never understood why 10 year old games require state of the art (7900+) video cards to play when... it's 10 years old.
- Asianwaste, on 03/08/2008, -1/+8*looks up, then looks down*
You sure? - JudgeMonkey, on 03/08/2008, -0/+6Shh, photo and video editing is all they have. Mustn't let them know we can do all that just fine too.
- pigducksheep, on 03/07/2008, -2/+8Dugg for Banjo Kazooie.
- sexybobo, on 03/08/2008, -0/+6That does sound cool. When are you going to make it and share it with the community like these people are doing with their project?
- RIAAagent, on 03/08/2008, -1/+7It looked like Banjo Kazooie on the 360
