- 4udacious, on 08/26/2008, -2/+63But... Why wouldn't Nintendo milk the Wii for everything it's worth ?
- doshindude, on 08/26/2008, -0/+42One again, this is from an analyst.....so that means they're most likely wrong.
Nintendo plans to keep the wii going for a while; any successors will just be enhancements to the wii/a new wii with a few more features. Kinda like how the expansion pak enhanced the n64 quite a bit. - kazimir34, on 08/27/2008, -1/+38Other analyst: "Or not"
- MikeSobe, on 08/26/2008, -1/+38FTA: But he said Nintendo's next home console could arrive before then. "One possible exception to console timing may be Nintendo, which could opt to upgrade the Wii with faster processing power, DVD capability and/or greater storage."
Sounds like throwing a blu ray player and bigger HD onto a 360. Or the expansion pack for N64 which doubled the RAM from 4 to 8MB, not a whole new console. - MrTsLoveChild, on 08/27/2008, -2/+32Nintendo STILL can't keep up with demand but they're going to add functionality and storage space?
Riiiiiiiiiiight.
How can I get a job as an analyst? They're the only people who are consistently less accurate than weathermen. - ThinkBox, on 08/27/2008, -2/+31OK, so ONE guy says that the Wii might get a small upgrade... and this will start a war... yeah right....
This is sensationalist bullcrap. Buried. - doshindude, on 08/26/2008, -0/+25I dunno about that, the Game Boy line itself lasted for 15 or so years, and I'm pretty sure the original GB lasted for 7 or 8 years, as opposed to the DS's 3.5
- SolipsismX, on 08/27/2008, -0/+20In other news: Some guy makes a guess about something and it makes front page.
Come on, unless this article backed up this prediction with some serious evidence, this is just ***** speculation.
If anything, Nintendo is known for milking out-of-date products (in terms of technology) as long as they can.... and yes, I'm a huge Nintendo fan-boy and even I know this. - nshady, on 08/27/2008, -1/+18Wii has DVD capability, it's just not enabled - you can unlock it with homebrew programs. Storage will eventually be solved by letting you run programs off SD cards or a Nintendo hard drive/stand. More processing power? Not worth updating just for that. This article is stupid. Nintendo will release a proper "next-gen" Wii in 2010 when they've milked everything they can out of the Wii and the pressure of Microsoft's waggle controller (2009) and rumours of the 360's successor start to grow. It will have HD visuals, inbuilt hard drive, improved Shop Channel for beaming virtual console games and DSWare to the DS2, and be backwards compatible with Wiimote alongside the new Wiimote/MotionPlus/Eyetoy or whatever they're cooking up.
- vat0r, on 08/27/2008, -2/+18I think they will. You'll be seeing a Wii with bumped up specs is all.
- chaosblade77, on 08/26/2008, -1/+14Any specific model. The original Gameboy lasted a lot longer than 8 years. It was released in '89, and the GBA was released in 2001, so about 12 years. Everything in between was just a Gameboy with a smaller size or new features (like color).
On the other hand, the DS is nearing 4 years and it's likely we'll see at least the announcement of it's successor next year. - deadmoo, on 08/26/2008, -0/+12They really do need some kind of storage expansion accessory or just update the firmware to allow games and channels to run from SD cards. And Nintendo does have a thing for releasing new versions of old hardware - DS Lite, GBA SP, etc.
- Frozo, on 08/27/2008, -0/+12Nintendo would never change their Wii strategy at this point, are you kidding?? Of course it would be a Wii 2. The whole concept is what is keeping them on a different playing field--which is why they are enjoying their success!
- trdrstv, on 08/27/2008, -0/+11Though I suspect the Wii2 and DS2 to be more "Evolutionary" than "Revolutionary", why do these analysts keep with the "It'll launch first because it's weaker" argument? The PS2 lasted 6 years against 2 stronger (technically speaking) systems and why wasn't Sony in a hurry to launch the PS3? Because they were the market leader.
Wii owners know the system doesn't do HD, and most of them don't care. - Elranzer, on 08/27/2008, -1/+11The Wii bought Nintendo some market share, but it doesn't really have the staying power to last until 2012. I think Nintendo's most likely plan is to do a new console, seperate from the Wii. A sort of third tier, like when GBA and DS were co-existing at the same time.
Nintendo could keep the casual market gripped with the Wii, and then take on the hardcore gamer market with a new HD system. They have the money, resources and brand recognition to pull it off. If Sony can maintain the PS2 with the PS3, Nintendo could maintain a new HD system with the Wii.
Dammit, I want my Zelda HD and Metroid HD. - keozen, on 08/27/2008, -2/+12You Suck
- djruden, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9With Wii Sports and Wii Play consistantly in the top sales and future Wii **** titles destined for the same theres no chance nintendo drops the Wii line.
Wii is the new Gameboy. It's gonna be here for a while. - Elranzer, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9Wii + HD graphics. It's time.
- TimDigg, on 08/27/2008, -0/+9So does Sony
PS2..PS2 w/lan...PS2 slim...
PSP-1000,2000,3000 etc
and MS to a much lesser degree...
S Controller - mattlohkamp, on 08/27/2008, -0/+8Nintendo isn't going to try and get between xbox and ps - there's no need to. It's not their game any more - and they're okay with that, because they're scooping up tons of cash from the non-gamer video-gamer market.
- Charlotte_Web, on 08/27/2008, -1/+8Super Wii?
Actually, it sounds like it could be a great strategy. Right now, there's a ton of A-list games that will never reach the Wii, because the developers say that they don't want to port cutting-edge games to a console with last-gen specs. It would damage the brand they are trying hard to create.
If Nintendo could get the Super Wii to market with specs that meet (or exceed!) the current generation a couple of years before Sony and Microsoft issue their next generation of consoles, they could woo all of those A-list developers to their platform. (Bioshock? Orange Box?)
For the developers it's a win, because it's a lot cheaper to port a game than to develop one from scratch, and if the Super Wii is a sales monster like the Wii is, a game port would be a no-brainer. - Electricpigdigg, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6Despite the Wii's flaws in the graphical department compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 it's far too soon to be releasing a new Wii that soon in the future anyway. It's nothing that good games for ALL audiences can't fix. House of The Dead Overkill is one step in the right direction. Mind you, Sony has been quick to upgrade the PSP.
- TimDigg, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6They aren't entering the move playing market...it's a just an added feature on the console...
Much like ford and chevy aren't in the movie playing market despite the fact that some of their vehicles come with dvd players - Pusod, on 08/27/2008, -4/+10Graphically Nintendo is behind. Coming out with a next gen console should finally catch them up to X-Box/PS3 standards. At least I hope so.
- inactive, on 08/27/2008, -1/+7Nintendo's stock is about 20 points higher than Sony's.
If they keep going like they're going, they'll have much more cash than Sony's gaming division, and soon. Not to mention Nintendo is capable of selling it's console a a MUCH lower price because it can more easily make up the lost profit in first party games, unlike Sony and Microsoft. - Agret, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6Upgrade the Wii with DVD capability? For playback, when HD is all the rage? Don't understand, the Wii already uses DVDs for games.
- donkevin, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5Super NES, Game Boy Color, Virtu-- oh wait.
- Charlotte_Web, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Bumping up the specs makes sense for PC makers; it makes a lot less sense for console makers, because you then fragment your market when the games for the bumped-up console starts hitting shelves.
If a console maker is going to fragment their market like that, it makes more sense to just sell it as a whole new console, and make changes across the board. I'm sure it would be backwards-compatible with the Wii, but probably lose compatibility with the GameCube (since consoles usually aren't backwards-compatible two generations). - djruden, on 08/27/2008, -2/+6I dont think Nintendo cares about entering the movie playing market. Nintendo is a game company, they make games and the hardware to play the games on. They do it so well that all my nintendo products still work to this day. My 1981 DK machine, my NES from 1987, SNES - etc - all the way up to the Wii.
Adding DVD playback will just ruin the laser in the Wii sooner and Nintendo has too good of a rep to ruin with some crappy feature no one would really use anyway. - Pusod, on 08/27/2008, -4/+8they gotta work on making the games appeal to the pc gamers who tend to gravitate to xbox/ps3. some of the reasons i have not bought a wii is 1. graphics.... too cartoony and not enough eye candy. 2. the games... majority of the selection is for children and teens. i'm a grown man and would like to see more adult titles like gta and d.o.a..... 3. no dvd playback or storage.
not my kind of console. sorry. - Borgcube, on 08/27/2008, -2/+6Sony and Microsoft do have more money then Nintendo, but they are also involved in other products and they can't just use all their money on one thing. Nintendo, on the other hand, makes nothing but video games and consoles so, even though they have less then 1/8 of Sony's revenue, for example, they only develop 2 things while Sony develops many more which means more money goes to one development.
Also, Nintendo does have manufacturing experience with consoles, I believe that they actually made more consoles than Sony and Microsoft combined (not in numbers of consoles sold, but in number developed). - Borgcube, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4About that, Wii already has DVD capability, just not official one, there is a homebrew program for it and I wouldn't be surprised if they made an official update with one DVD player.
- jeremyduffy, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4I sure hope so. I'm not ready for a new system to come out. My budget can't handle it.
- Elranzer, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4I suggest Nintendo release a new console, a true HD successor to the Gamecube. Keep the Wii as its own, seperate thing. If any company has the capability to hold three consoles (including the DS) at the same time, it's Nintendo.
- Dracusis, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Are you kidding, who ~wouldn't~ want a Wii with a GPU capable of full HD games?
If Nintendo launched a HD console when they launched the Wii it would have been much more expensive, and with their name still covered in mud due to poor GC sales it would have surely flopped, but now.... - djruden, on 08/27/2008, -2/+6I agree, I'm a Wii60 owner and have more Wii games than 360. I think I've enjoyed more Wii games thus far, of course, all were the big Nintendo titles. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Paper Mario. But those games have hours upon hours of fun.
Some of those games I dont even notice having "bad graphics" compared to 360. Metroid Prime 3 looked amazing.
Nintendo could do well to copy the whole xbox live experience tho. - Charlotte_Web, on 08/27/2008, -2/+6Two years after its introduction, and supply still can't meet demand.
Yeah, I'd call that a revolution... - chaosblade77, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3That statement seems to be taken out of context, it's the same thing that several people from Nintendo have said over the last few months. Nintendo has long development cycles, around 2-3 years per game. They aren't saying 2-3 years from NOW, they are saying 2-3 years as of when the games first entered development.
Second half of 2009 is when we should start seeing more big games from Nintendo, not necessarily 2010-2011. Hopefully they will pace themselves a bit more though, so they don't end up in another game drought like this one. Only two relatively big games for an entire year (Q3 '09 - Q2 '10), Animal Crossing and Wario Land. - hellsing47, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3You're seriously saying Nintendo won't release another console for 7-8 years?
- Borgcube, on 08/27/2008, -3/+6Nintendo saved the video game industry (partially, atleast) so kudos for that.
- Elranzer, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Nintendo has always been the hardware underdog?
The SNES was more powerful than the Genesis. Even with the 32X add-on, the SNES produced more impressive-looking games with the add-on chips built-in the cartridges such as the SuperFX chip. Companies like Rare and Square even figured out techniques to make Saturn-looking 2D games without using the add-on chips towards the end of the SNES' life.
The N64 was more powerful than the PS1, with the exception of the CD-ROM storage capacity (but then again, the cartridges had no load times). - rockrapdude, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3So you wanna say that I have to buy a new Wii?
- petemorley, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3The Wii Motion Plus is Nintendo's attempt at keeping the Wii fresh and prolonging its life. Nintendo are practically printing money at the moment, there won't be a Wii2 for a few years yet.
- djruden, on 08/27/2008, -1/+4I think Nintendo will go with the incremental upgrades for the Wii. The way they handled the Gameboy worked so well. Always keeping it backwards compatible and just improving the design and graphics and sound a bit every time.
Definately waiting until sales start to die down. Then the early adopters might be ready for the upgrade and Nintendo might have a good game ready to release with it. - RMDTech, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Actually if they keep the same architecture then technically they could still very easily play GameCube Games on the system since the basic Architectural structure is the same with just more power for the Wii.
- dig1x, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3You might want to consider that the low price of the USD might mean that nintendo isnt interested in selling to many units here.
They are available in Canada, and Japan seems to have no problem... - mustbepatient, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Very true, and the Gamecube was definitely more powerful than the PS2. Basically, it's usually the opposite of Khast's statement. Plus, I think Nintendo considered the PS2 "real competition"...
- dig1x, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Kinda throws a real monkey-wrench into Sony's *false* claim that it has a 10 year life for PS3.
Sure, it does have a 10 year life, just like the PS2, but honestly, is the PS2 really "relevant" any more? Yes it sells, I suspect for young children and to replace broken units.
I suspect MS will also have a 10-year plan for the Xbox 360, but still introduce the Xbox 720 at the usual 7-ish year mark -- just like Nintendo **AND** Sony will do.
Any new console takes the wind out of the sails of the others -- its an arms race, and Sony cannot simply decide to "sit it out" and play another game. The PS3 has *already* taken enough kicks-to-the-teeth. - jerrycan, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3Well the raw power that the xb360 and the ps3 have would be alot cheaper to make in today's world. If Nintendo could release a system that could surpass the PS3/XB360, say next year, in terms of system power, and maintain that new system with what the Wii has now (%100 Wii, NGC, emulator games), It could really ***** on Sony and MS and their perceived hardware superiority. They'd almost be forced to cut their current gen short, before it gets profitable (or very profitable). Bold move if nintendo does it.
- chaosblade77, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3If they stick with the Wii brand, why waste the money on another console that likely won't sell?
Think about it. Would your mom/grandmother go out and buy a console every five years "just because?" They don't care about things like graphics or gameplay enhancements future consoles will bring. Nintendo would make a lot more money off of game sales and peripherals for a console in 70 million or however many homes [at that time, not now] than they would producing and selling new hardware they can't get into homes because they've damaged their brand in the mind of gamers, and the non-gamers already have a Wii and won't see a reason to upgrade.
Unless we see a fairly large turn around, chances are gamers aren't going to continue to back the Wii. There are upcoming games that target the "core gamer" and if those don't sell as well as expected, we won't see developers attempt games like that in the future because they just aren't as profitable. Judging by the sales of previously released games that aren't minigame complications and such, only the really hyped games (Conduit/Madworld) are going to do decently, but with so many people already dropping the Wii, I really doubt they will do as well as expected.
If another Wii console is released, it will be sold to the non-gamers that are eating it up because it's popular. The same strategy won't work twice in a row so soon, and I'm sure Nintendo knows this. -
