- dansmeek, on 01/20/2008, -6/+75i'm so sick of headlines that have to be 'sensationalized.' 860 != "thousands"
why can't you just say 860? or "hundreds?"
it's starting to make me lose any emotion attached to these sensational phrases such that when an article like "billions of people watch on live TV a threesome with Bush and Osama Bin-Laden" appears, that I won't even care. - bechard, on 01/20/2008, -1/+37Hey, now we can email each other! (Sigh) I too was on this list, and I can't wait for the spam to start flowing...
I actually called Activision when this happened (4:00pm, EST) and complained...they appologized, but offered no recourse, even though my email address will likely need to be trashed in a week's time, and I've spent years with this email address.
So long corporate contacts, etc.
Thanks Activision.
P.S. Someone else responded in the CC'd email about the new disc process...
1. Activision sends you a prepaid envelope for you to place your original GH3 disc in.
2. Mail disc in pre-paid envelope.
3. Wait 2-4 weeks for replacement disc, pending no other postal slowdown.
4. Get GH3 in likely 5 weeks, finally get to play the game that you paid for after over a month's hiatus.
Awesome. - MacHarborGuy, on 01/20/2008, -0/+35if only Wii friend codes were this easy to spread around
- nightmare1228, on 01/20/2008, -0/+34*Clicks reply all button"
- Zarokima, on 01/20/2008, -4/+35Buried for thinking anyone here cares about your blog.
- joshuaer, on 01/20/2008, -0/+27HELLO SIR. I AM MILLIONS AIR FROM FAR AWAY COUNTRY I HAVE SENT YOU EMAILS PLEASE CHECK YOUR INBOX.
you know it is real look at all the caps! - Zarokima, on 01/20/2008, -0/+25Buried for expecting that to increase your traffic.
- b12dreamer, on 01/20/2008, -0/+21Yeah, I was on the list as well and i've already been spammed.
Now this is a big corporate messup. - angrycat, on 01/20/2008, -2/+21That's why I use my cats email when signing up for those things.
Then my kitty bites me when he finds out :( - inactive, on 01/20/2008, -0/+19Dugg up for bashing people that try to get traffic to their crappy blog.
- wiifm69, on 01/20/2008, -4/+20well, I'm fairly sure this is the reason why you have junk mail filters
- egonSchiele, on 01/20/2008, -0/+16so now that you have those 859 email addresses, why not try to organize a rebellion against activision?
- truspect0r, on 01/20/2008, -6/+22[This comment is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Church of Scientology International]
- doshindude, on 01/20/2008, -0/+15The whole replacement process is retarded.....why send in your game first then wait 3 weeks for a new disc to come???? why not do what Harmonix does with Rock Band and have them ship the new stuff first then you return your defective stuff?
- houndeyex, on 01/20/2008, -2/+15By the way, 860 != "thousands"
- nottanner, on 01/20/2008, -0/+12Megan Fox.
- AJO21, on 01/20/2008, -0/+11Time to raise hell. I was on this list as well.
They're not getting away with a simple apology. Once suggestion was to waive the sending in of the discs, and just ship us the game when it's ready, bypassing the 1+ month wait. Seems like a decent idea.
buuuuut... I WOULD like a new controller as well. - Zarokima, on 01/20/2008, -0/+10Bush, Osama, and who else?
- thetechkid, on 01/20/2008, -1/+11See the problem is people like you can't see the implied "/sarcasm"
- PixelD, on 01/20/2008, -0/+9Oh Noes! Xenu is here! Run everybody before he gets your thetans!
- aboyd, on 01/20/2008, -0/+9Why is orenshk getting dugg down? He is correct -- the text says that the 860 number comes from just ONE of THREE email messages that were sent out. I've seen this before -- the mail program won't take thousands of addresses, so the dumb email user breaks it into a number of messages, each with a few hundred recipients. If Kotaku got three such emails, that's roughly 2400 email addresses exposed (assuming that each of the 3 messages had about the same number and no duplicates). If there are other messages that were NOT forwarded to Kotaku, then the number is even higher.
- PixelD, on 01/20/2008, -0/+9Are you kidding? They want you to go wait that long without a game while they throw the old disc in trash? Not like it makes sense to scam them in for a free game if you need the guitar to play it. Guess thats their way of making people think twice about taking them up on the replacement.
- orenshk, on 01/20/2008, -2/+10Um....
"In just one of the e-mails that was forwarded to us, an impressive 860 recipient e-mail addresses were listed in the mail's 'To' field"
Read. That's spelled R E A D - MalDON, on 01/20/2008, -0/+8If the email server sent them out in batches it could very easily be thousands.
- iascoot, on 01/20/2008, -0/+8because, they shouldnt have to
- mrgoat, on 01/20/2008, -7/+14860 people? big ***** deal.
- MrsButtersworth, on 01/20/2008, -2/+9This is ***** trivial.
- enclaved, on 01/20/2008, -1/+7What they should do is have two options, like how many other companies do RMAs
Option 1: You send your old product, they send you new product.
Option 2: You give them a credit card number to ensure you'll return the old product, and they send you a new one. You send the old one back. - Sil369, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5Richard Simmons.
- zonk3r, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5Not sure why you are telling us. You should click "Reply All" and let everyone on that list know what Activision did.
- MacHarborGuy, on 01/20/2008, -0/+5"When did digg become so sensationalist?"
o_o I cannot believe someone actually asked a question like that! Digg, open posting system, sensationalist, NEHVA!!! - egonSchiele, on 01/20/2008, -1/+5dugg for pic.
- CurlyMike139125, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Nintendo has the best system ever...If something's broken, they'll send you a new one first, BUT, you have to give them your credit card number, so if you don't send in the defective material, they'll charge it. Everybody wins (unless you forget to send the old one back)..
- MalDON, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4Again as I've said, their mail software probably batched emails together in 860 email chunks to reduce load.
- qwertydvorak, on 01/20/2008, -1/+5just require them to put up a credit card if they want to get the new one first. they don't mail it back they get charged. pretty common practice with alot of parts replacements.
- ThE0eNiGmA, on 01/20/2008, -0/+4FYI: Harmonix USED to be the developer behind Guitar Hero. Neversoft is the current developer behind the Guitar Hero franchise. Activision is the publisher of Guitar Hero, and MTV is the publisher of Rock Band. So you can't say that Harmonix made both Guitar Hero III and Rock Band.
- Eldorian, on 01/20/2008, -2/+6Obviously you've never heard of junk mail filters.
- MalDON, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3Good luck with the new controller buddy.
- aboyd, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3It was one of 3 messages that were forwarded to Kotaku. The other 2 emails had more addresses. The math may in fact add up to thousands.
- doshindude, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3you're retarded, Harmonix DIDN'T make GH3. Neversoft did.
- xxxana, on 01/20/2008, -0/+3ASK THEM FOR AN EXTRA GUITAR :D
caps lock is auto pilot for awesomeness. - MalDON, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2For the record, and so people stop saying the headline is false:
Chances are the email was sent out in chunks. Yup, such a novel idea to reduce the server load.
If there was only 860 gh3 owners for the wii, I would be ashamed of them. - mrjit, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2Cross shipment of RMA's is not even remotely rare. Obviously they should require a credit card to charge if you don't return the equipment, or like Logitech just tell you to trash it.
- 5xSTUN, on 01/20/2008, -0/+2I've seen this kind of thing before, and if you were to try to explain to the sender of the email just exactly what he or she did wrong, and exactly why you don't EVER do that, his or her eyes will glaze over.
- Virgule, on 01/20/2008, -1/+3"opps"
- leetninja, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1play a real guitar ... dicklips
- boberthepker, on 01/21/2008, -0/+1Happened to me, I now have 99 strangers email addresses and they have mine...oh well...it's not like spam is a problem w/ gmail.
- ttam, on 01/20/2008, -1/+21. It's your own fault if you didn't give them your spam address.
2. Now everyone has each other's contact info to better organize the class action suit - daborg, on 01/21/2008, -0/+15. ???
6. Profit! - Coffeedemon, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1Can't you just use those to start off your friend code list?
