- U83RMENSCH, on 03/12/2009, -0/+43as cool as this is.. we all know they are going to ditch the edu-software and go out and get mario kart asap.
- salinungatha, on 03/12/2009, -0/+41There are Japanese kids who don't already own a DS?
- tensaibaka, on 03/12/2009, -0/+21After reading the Japanese article linked from this link, it looks like they leave it up to the schools themselves to decide which software will be allowed to be used, which can be good, but they should at least have a "recommended" list of software for each school to choose from. Here in Japan there's a whole bunch of DS software for learning English, and also the Japanese language. I myself use a couple of the Japanese calligraphy ones, which is great for keeping sharp on the various kanji and readings. I think the main concern here is that the parents are still associating the DS with "gaming only", and not potential educational supplemental tools.
- nigelmansell, on 03/12/2009, -3/+231st recommended software
Ret’s Rearn Engrish - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+13I suppose that could help with driving theory lessons
"Avoid bananas, drive over coloured bits of the road for a speed boost and always, always watch out for blue shells." - MinaSulo, on 03/12/2009, -1/+13America is so backwards, they would just take YOUR DS.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+12give me nintendo, you keep the software
- Elranzer, on 03/12/2009, -0/+9For *****'s sake, R4 is not the only nor best flash cart for the DS!
Move on to something with SDHC and ability to run on the DSI. - Maudrid, on 03/12/2009, -3/+11R4 anyone?
- salinungatha, on 03/12/2009, -0/+7No
- Trifold, on 03/12/2009, -0/+6And in Soviet Russia, DS takes YOU!
- umbrellainabin, on 03/12/2009, -0/+6wel obvsiouly....exactly what i would do
- W1LS0N, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5second largest city in japan, population 3 million.
- animenexus, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5HOORAY for Japan =D
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5Meanwhile, my DS gets confiscated :(
- SmackAttack42, on 03/12/2009, -1/+6Yeah, I thought all Japanese babies were born with one in their hands... that's what Uncle Miyamoto told me...
- bpwrinn, on 03/12/2009, -0/+5I didn't know you could Twitter on DS. :0
- mlvassallo, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4Are you thinking of Okinawa, Daniel-San?
- chedonline, on 03/12/2009, -0/+4CycloDS is much better.
- zuiquan, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3Says the guy that still uses a slide rule because he can't figure out the % button on a calculator. We're behind other schools because education is of paramount importance in those countries and it's quite different in America. Ever been to school and been looked down upon by others because you're smart or try hard in your classes? I sure as ***** have. Cultural differences = educational gaps. End of story.
- Philbert, on 03/12/2009, -0/+3I'd love to find one of those calligraphy programs for PC with a Wacom tablet.
- Sraser, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2I was in play-based learning K-Grade 3, this would have been a dream for me back then.
However it would have cut into the time needed to keep my lego-mafia running smoothly. - elduquex26x, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2Will it run Starcraft?
- XxtraLarGe, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2I think the DS could be a great way to get people to learn. Puzzle games like Sudoko & Brain Age, plus all the "My [Miscellaneous Language] Coach" type software out there could help some students who might not be interested in learning otherwise.
- outz, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2You think the DS is going to be free?
- morpheus83, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2Welcome to Japan.
- Greengoo, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2In my Japanese classes at MSU a few of the students had the kanji/kana program for the DS and would sit there doodling on it in class... it was really cool.
- aussieNickuss, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2That's nothin'......there's plans here in Victoria, Australia to GIVE an Acer Aspire netbook to every grade 5 student.
- mourne, on 03/12/2009, -0/+2To think that you have to use a pen and paper to learn something... That's just silly. Many people work differently. Some people like audible lectures. I personally can't glean a whole lot. I'd rather read my data.
And this coming first hand from the the guy who never went to high school, but is a successful network engineer...
Just because it works for you, doesn't mean it's for everyone. - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1Between this, sushi, and Hayao Miyazaki's films, I freaking love Japan!
- Philbert, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1I know that, but apparently he doesn't.
- dustinjr1993, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1im not jealous because my school has a BOCES program and i think its awesome
- mourne, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1What about the Osaka-ben? If it's not the redneck area, the way they talk sure is considered that way. At least to every Japanese person I've talked to.
- Philbert, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1In this box, open it up and see.
- Myztry, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1It's 10,000 students according to the booklet I'm holding. The stated worth of each package is AU$900. They're not actually giving them away. It's a lease agreement comprising 2x$52 annual payments, and an optional $52 purchase option at the end of the third year. Non warranty repair and insurance included with $100 excess. Theft replacement requires police report.
Anyway, my kids DS cost me way more (especially with the 'edge card' and 4Gig SDHC) - mourne, on 03/12/2009, -1/+2eigo ...
- LadyLucifer, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1I'm not impressed yet :P
I will be when they do the same with the DSi, lol. - Mtbeaver, on 03/15/2009, -0/+1Not exactly, but I assume the government is going to pay for them rather than my parents.
- fanfablebig, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1what? does Oprah own these schools?
- Ceryn1126, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1Anyone have the original japanese source on this?? It's a bit hard to believe... (and if its true i wanna show the principal at the japanese elementary I work at)
- ansatsu29, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1What the heck?
- endyminion, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1Did you do JCMU by any chance?
- KajiRaider, on 03/12/2009, -1/+2Another one? maybe but i`d rather buy a M3 right now XD
- ssquared22, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1That's an amazing plan, even with the education software
- aussieNickuss, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1I guess the "grape vine" can be exaggerated at times. I heard it through the ST at the high school I work at but haven't seen any official docos about it.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+1Great Idea! Lets start making kids loyal to a certain brand early on so we can make more money later.
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+1where's my Pandora?
- didodrone, on 03/12/2009, -0/+0Wow this is a total upset in my case for my generation. i would have loved to play these "educational" games in class as a "learning method". get it straight....its down right entertaining and absorbs your mind as a child. If you would have told us to produce the same or better effort with video games instead of books, I believe we would have been more then glad to adapt as well. But i dont wanna seem bitter im glad they have recieved the opportunity
- Philbert, on 03/12/2009, -3/+3You mean Ingirisu?
