- r3m1x, on 10/02/2008, -1/+69Three words: about. damn. time.
- RealDealRick, on 10/02/2008, -0/+44I can't believe they never saw this coming when developing the Wii in the first place.
- anonatron, on 10/03/2008, -2/+27Ok, we will be able to download directly to an SD card, this saves us the slight headache of transferring the file after we have downloaded it. It seems from the article that they are not enabling play from the SD card. Without that ability, we just have the same problem. I do not want to have to dick for 30 minutes to play Mario 3 for 10 minutes.
Play from SD card or this is not a solution. - chaosblade77, on 10/02/2008, -2/+17I'd say it's adequate, but not the best possible solution. 2.5GB of freely accessible storage should be enough for nearly anybody, the only way to fill that is to go on a N64/Wiiware buying spree.
SDHC should have been supported from day one, and the ability to read/write freely to a 16GB card would have been more than adequate. - nintendomaniac, on 10/02/2008, -3/+15What I want to know is why not the ability to use USB mass storage devices as well as SD cards? Homebrew can (though currently limited to USB 1.1), so surely it could officially be implemented (and at full USB 2.0 too!)
- skywake, on 10/03/2008, -1/+12damn straight.. playing from SD cards would be the logical solution. I mean, how hard would it be to have a list of "paid for" channels on the Wii itself and only enable running of those channels... wherever it exists?
Although in their defence this does remove the "you don't have enough space to download this" message when downloading (when you get that you have to exit the shop, delete/move some stuff and then go back into the shop and THEN download) and it apparently improves the transfer speeds to the SD card. Its definitely a step in the right direction - Rioracer916, on 10/03/2008, -2/+13...okay...we can already do this.
The question is can we RUN software from our SD cards? Or do I have to click through 5 menus, free up space by deleting channels, then copy the game over.
Spring of 2009? I'm sorry but I'm honestly not looking that far into the future. I'm of the opinion that this was an inevitable problem that should have had this solution on day one.
First the DSi, now this news.
I'm becoming more and more disinterested. Here's hoping Animal Crossing Wii turns out to be some sort of distinct improvement over the DS and Gamecube versions. - Crazymaniacc, on 10/03/2008, -2/+12It's not even a solution, it's a delay for a better solution.
- opnickc, on 10/02/2008, -3/+134 times the space, actually (.5gb*4=2gb).
And if you use that up, you can always get another one. Not ideal, but without HD video and full game demos, I doubt many will fill 2.5GB anyway. If you do, I suppose you could always keep DLC with its game (e.g. keep an SD card with Rock Band 2 downloaded tracks in the RockBand 2 case).
It's a satisfactory solution. I was afraid they were going to make us buy a proprietary external hard drive. This is cheaper and less obtrusive (I imagine an external hard drive sitting next to a Wii would look rather silly, being it'd be about the same size). - rockstar1o9, on 10/03/2008, -1/+10Does the Wii support SDHC cards, or just SD?
- Elranzer, on 10/03/2008, -1/+10I believe it doesn't support SDHC out of the box, but a firmware update could always correct this.
- Xionic, on 10/03/2008, -2/+10How hard is it to have a small, external, USB harddrive addon? Put a 20gb drive (more than enough space for the Wii) in it so you can sell it for $49.99 and watch people buy it like a crack addict needing a fix.
- doshindude, on 10/02/2008, -7/+15still not an adequate solution. make a damn hard drive.
- brokenworlds, on 10/03/2008, -0/+8Nice feature but should have been there since the start.
- zeebo, on 10/03/2008, -1/+9I'm sure the reason for this is that a 20gig drive, or even an 8gig drive could hold games that would otherwise requrie a DVD. 2gigs is relatively safe. Nintendo are more an more paranoid about piracy.
- APHughes, on 10/02/2008, -1/+9They needed this because some people have not downloaded games due to the lack of storage.
- ThePenrod, on 10/02/2008, -2/+9Taking my comment way too seriously.
- Subcontinental, on 10/03/2008, -1/+7I can't believe it took this long for a "solution." Now we have to go out and buy more crap for the Wii...more money for something that should have been there from the beginning.
- vilago, on 10/03/2008, -1/+7its just a gimmick to make the non-adopters jump on the bandwagon aka more $$ for nintendo
- Elranzer, on 10/03/2008, -1/+7The Wii reads it as FAT16/FAT32, I believe.
- smoger, on 10/03/2008, -1/+7did you think the wii was magically gonna have more memory one day? this is the least expensive thing they possibly could have done.
- apec766, on 10/03/2008, -1/+7Well, depending what they do between now and then for Guitar Hero: World Tour, they're working it some way for DLC to be loaded straight from the SD Card (though it may be through a cached version copied to the system only when used).
- a0me, on 10/03/2008, -1/+6There are currently 256 games available on the Virtual Console, most of them being NES (avg 256KB), SNES (avg 2MB) and Genesis titles (avg 2MB). I don't know how many gigs one would need to download the entire list of Virtual Console titles, but it looks like a 2GB SD card should be enough for most Wii owners.
- n64guru, on 10/03/2008, -2/+7This "new" feature of storing Virtual Console and WiiWare games actually already exists in the homebrew community, and it goes by the name of Wad Manager by waninkoko.
- StormTroopr, on 10/03/2008, -1/+6You can use a normal 2.5 drive in the PS3. Sadly, not for the 360.
(Not a fanboy. I've only used my PS3 that I have owned since release to play MGS4, play with Ubuntu, and try some demos. Seems like such a waste so far compared to my 360.) - LoveWidescreen, on 10/03/2008, -1/+6Keep in mind that they never saw themselves as a competitor to the PS3 and the XB360. They have said many times that they would have been content to have been to remain in third place of the console wars. The popularity of the Wii caught them *completely* off guard. Considering that they expected to have been in third place anyway, it's of no surprise (to me anyway) that they "under-engineered" it to what they felt was going to be their core audience.
My only wish is that they had a way to upgrade the firmware to read SDHC cards. Still, it's not like SD cards take up a lot of space. - smoger, on 10/03/2008, -2/+6Strongbad's Cool game for attractive people
Dr Mario Online Rx

Mario 64
DLC for Guitar Hero / Rock Band / Samba De Amigo / ....
yeah really.. when is anything worth getting gonna be released? - bilbravo, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5My understanding is that the answer is "maybe". The pinouts for SD and SDHC are the same, but depending on how Nintendo implemented the I/O hardware controller it may or may not be able to read SDHC because they store the header in a different format (without looking it up, something like a 4 bit header vs. 8 bit header).
- nobelief, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4R4 allows him to skip buy a remodel of the gamecube for $250 though
- modsuperstar, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Why the hell is it going to take until the Spring? Guitar Hero 4 comes out later this month, we need this solution now.
- Rubyss, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Right now, no. But the homebrew community enabled it somehow, so obviously its possible hardware-wise.
- vilago, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4marketing and profits my friend. its the way of the corporate world. there was probably some profitable reason they didnt do it in the first place.
- peterredding, on 10/03/2008, -2/+5Just make a hard drive and stop fannying about with half assed solutions. I'm sure that it could be held in a nice shiny white caddy that could clip onto the bottom of the Wii so it doesn't look "ugly".
- Slayerdude51982, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Wow...an SD card..should of saw that one coming. Sure it will be okay to download right on the card but, am I gonna be able to play off it? Probably not. That and having till wait till spring 09? are you kidding me Nintendo?
- Philbert, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3Wonder what ever happened to the patent they got for holographic storage.
- LostOverThere, on 10/21/2008, -0/+2As freetyme said, don't worry. You can save more songs onto a SD card. You wont need to wait for Nintendo to fix this up for you. Its enabled by default in GHWT.
- zeebo, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3Wii and DS are really Nintendo's first systems that haven't strived for technological dominance. Its not like they're slouches either though, their goal just wasn't bigger, faster, hotter. Rather it was smaller, cooler, cheaper. Had Nintendo released a HD console on the level of the 360 or the PS3 it would have been yet another big expensive console on the market that wouldn't have been able to really differentiate itself from the competition.
- vilago, on 10/03/2008, -2/+4i agree. i mean nintendo hasnt really been technologically advanced since super nintendo so i'm not surprised by that low limit.
- TheTjalian, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3Clearly not a "ton" of games, then. I can't actually fill up all my channel slots due to the lack of space.
- Scrappy1850, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2what is "to dick"?
- ThomasMarshall, on 10/03/2008, -2/+4They have been, for the past 20+ years.
- smoger, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3Actually no, because Nintendo's solution is to execute programs from the SD card, which last I checked, Wad Manager does not do
- freetyme, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2GHWT does this. It just doesn't technically let you run straight from the SD card. Instead it caches it and, at least according to Red Octane PR runs "seamlessly." The DLC is stored on the SD card and then, using up 200 blocks on your Wii, unfortunately, puts it on there and deletes it after you're done playing. Still if it really is seamless no one will tell the difference.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/04/2008, -0/+1Haha don't worry dude, I got it.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 10/04/2008, -0/+1I don't blame them. You can now boot modified wii discs in softmodded consoles. Runs like ***** but works enough for games that don't need fast loading.
Before I get bashed though, I backed my own games for my own personal use up with usbgecko, Mainly to uncensor manhunt 2 but even that runs kinda choppy. - MarkOfTheDead, on 10/04/2008, -0/+1If you have to ask you'll never know.
- yugiohdan6, on 10/05/2008, -0/+1while this is GREAT it would also be nice if they just allowed a USB hard drive to be used like an SD card
- LostOverThere, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1I know most people are angry at this but in all honestly, this is no small fix. A significant amount of the Wii System will have to be rewritten to change this by default. Yes this was very short sighted of Nintendo to let this happen in the first place, but they realise it now. Also, in terms of Spring 09, Nintendo might be good but their developers are so magical that they can code and debug a few thousands of lines of code over night.
Besides, does anyone here really use 512mb? I've used about a tenth of it, if that. - MarkOfTheDead, on 10/04/2008, -0/+1have you bought any wiiware games and any n64 games?
Well I have, and I've opted to use fceultra to play the roms I bought in cartidge form and still own, and the vc purchases I've made of other games this year because I ran out of space.
Just because it didn't happen to you yet doesn't mean it isn't impossible. - Twee, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Same here man, I've downloaded 2 NES games and an N64 game. I have plenty of space available. I'm not going to buy much VC/WiiWare stuff because I think its overpriced compared to something like the iTunes app store.
