First, I applaud the Center for Young Women's Development for putting their mission above all else. Second, I love and use Craigslist. But this story makes me really stop and think about some of their "services", and whether because they can provide them, doesn't mean they should. So frequently they portray themselves as the "David" to the corporate "Goliath". I don't disagree with that characterization. But this shows how complex corporate identities are, and that one day you're "David" and the next you're "Goliath", or maybe both at the same time.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

The real shame is all the advocacy groups for victims of sex trafficking or sex workers groups, even several people from the law enforcement community have all come out and said that the pressure and forced closure of that section of Craigslist was a massive mistake. It hurt victims, it hurt law enforcement. All of the people who know what they are talking about regarding these issues were ignored for the sake of politicians.

Please. If the balance of the comments means anything this women's group is a bunch of self-involved fools who are more interested in putting their noble, ethical purity on display then they are in helping women. With that $100K they could've fed and sheltered street kids or women on the run from guys who thump them. What's good is this little ritual going to do them?
Oh, and where's the link to the original story? The stupid shmuck original poster didn't include the link to the actual blogs.sfweekly.com piece.
Here's the link - http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/09/san_francisco_non-profit_rejec.php#more - in case anyone wants to read the dreary tale of the victory of self-indulgence over compassion.
Nice move Center for Young Women's Development. I'm sure all the kids you now can't help will appreciate your principled position.

This is not putting their mission above all else. From their site, their mission is:
"Our mission is to empower and inspire young women who have been involved with the juvenile justice system and/or the underground street economy to create positive change in their lives and communities."
Please explain how burning $100,000 in a symbolic gesture somehow does more to forward that mission than actually utilizing that money would.

Want to hurt Craigslist? One good way I can think of is to TAKE THEIR MONEY!
thenemo1Sep 17, 2010
I want to say that Craigslist is a open source for everyone.
No one forces these people of both sexes to list themselves on there. They do so for profit they aren't 13 year old kids from Minnesota coming off the bus at times square. Many of these people would work in Vegas but can't as momma and poppa can over look their daughter going out of town for a day trip & overlook the lack of a company paycheck & no w-2 form every year or tax return. no body thinks their daughter does that so it's excusable & overlooked.
Let's grow up here & realize that like many i have a had a colored eyeglass distorted view of the way people really are.
In fact!
They are lazy & many wouldn't even educate themselves if not for the requirement of the state.
So i have to say take off your blinders & see that in many cases the victim is the opposite of whom you think it is! Young beautiful centerfold types are selling themselves for easy money & enticing many that would not have entered into a relationship because they are offering up a live centerfold.
A real live 'barbie' to a isolated population of people that many times are working very hard with limited options for companionship let alone a relationship. THE TERRIBLE side effect is that for some greedy seedy cash hungry (pure as the driven snow) daughters becoming rich this is a issue that many have construed as a girl is a victim era!
WRONG this isn't a girl being used by a lousy pimp to abuse her and treat her as a victim.
This is a girl, women, whose desire for easy money makes her ruin a person by destroying relationship and disease's that destroy lives a terrible situation.
I have never paid for it or never wanted to as it will destroy the person on both sides.
AND,
Now reverse the situation and you have males that prey on other males; and they get out there at a young age they are so voracious that they have as little concern for anything as one could ever expect from society today.
Therefore,
Legal prostitution is the only safer sane way for the world to continue we are born as sexual creatures, yes medical testing 7 registration, & anyone that can't set themselves aside from their desires as many can't has to be protected from the greedy voracious appetite for money crowd.

Idiots.
thenemo1Sep 17, 2010
People have to realize that craigslist can't and won't change society's values and no one can take away a venue for these people that will find a way to do their greedy actions.
darkside2984Sep 18, 2010
There are women who could have used that money in shelters all over the US that are underserved and struggling to stay open. Way to make a statement! Tell the girl who is getting beat by her boyfriend that you shut the doors to make sure that craigslist knew that the world's oldest profession has met its match! Idiots.
actanonverba71Sep 19, 2010
the loudest, most hateful feminazis are always spoiled middle class bitches.
HatfieldDee1Sep 18, 2010
They should have given me the money to find this Craig, beat the s**t out of him, and burn his list.
Closed AccountSep 18, 2010
For what? Because a few hookers advertised there? I bet you advocate shutting down all local news papers too, then.
user500Sep 18, 2010
why would I need a list of all the Craigs ?
karlhSep 18, 2010
If they had wanted to make more than a wuss statement, they should have cashed the check and burned the actual money.
hotrod6978Sep 18, 2010
Agreed, all they did was save craigslist $100,000

In other news, once popular social news site Digg burned all it's users on 8/25/10. Now front page stories have 70 diggs and 5 comments. Pathetic.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
user500Sep 18, 2010
agreed. hard to believe this is my firs time on digg in weeks given I was on here several times a day frequently for hours.
Ive been going to http://popurls.com/ to get my Digg content without actually coming to digg.
mike42979Sep 18, 2010
why not publicize the fact that craigslist gave them a check with strings attached and say they are donating the money to another organization. If craigslist voids the check there going to immediately look like the assh**es.
eumingSep 18, 2010
"As an organization of women that all grew up poor, when will we get the chance for another $100,000?" Sanchez says. "But it was a chance to stand up for what we believe in and say we won't be easily bought."
So they traded $100,000 for a gesture. Well, it's only worth it if that gesture buys them a greater value in some goodwill and positive publicity for their cause, which I doubt it will.
I would like to see Larry Flynt donate $500,000 so they can burn that up to. They should just keep raising the stakes to see at what price they *can* be bought. It doesn't cost anything to donate since they keep burning the checks anyway. And each time they do, they look stupider and stupider. And if they ever accept a donation, then they threw away their own self-defined "principles."
If they really hate Craigslist that much, just accept the donation and use the money to fund litigation or legislation against Craigslist. Craigslist would look like a douche if they gave the money to a non-profit "with conditions" and then actually tried to sue them for it. So instead of making Craigslist look bad, they just make themselves look foolish and make Craigslist look like a like a nice organization that was just trying to help.

Give it to charity you donkeys
trooper09Sep 18, 2010
In all honesty, I can see why the women's group would refuse and burn their donation. It's receiving money from one of your greatest adversary and told you can no longer fight us in any issue that may arrive later. That's a hard pill to swallow when a major goal is to end the solicitation of women. The check really should have been a donation with no strings attached.
notigSep 18, 2010
It seems to me this is pretty narrow minded. Should cell phones be revolted against because they can be used by girl traffickers to communicate with each other to facilitate their trafficking?
If anything craigstlist actually helps to catch these people.
rblancarteSep 18, 2010
I am sorry this was extremely stupid. They turned down money that was 1/8 of their annual budget to make a statement. To me, this isn't a group that is standing up for what they believe, this is a group that is showing they are putting publicity (note this is in the paper) ahead of their real cause, helping women, which that money could have done.
To many, this move could show that this group doesn't truly have their priorities straight and thus is not worthy of further donation. Why should I donate money to a group that bypasses money to make a stand. I mean, I understand if they were being bought off by a group like Playboy or Penthouse, but this is Craigslist. It is almost like we have to donate more to make up for this stance of theirs.
Maybe this money had some strings attached (the legislation part), but, with some creative book keeping they could have easily shown that not a single penny of the Craigslist money went to anything that Craigslist stipulated, while still pursuing those actions. It isn't that hard.
Finally, Craigslist has not truly "facilitating" trafficking. They may have provided an avenue, but no more than the phone companies (because a lot of deals are made by phone), auto companies (people are transported around in cars, trucks and vans) or internet providers (who facilitates e-mail traffic that provides another avenue of communication). Are they turning their donations down too?

user500Sep 18, 2010
sweet the comment page is as buggy as when 4.0 launched.
elmundio87Sep 18, 2010
If that's how they treat donations, they aren't getting a dime out of me.
babywookieSep 18, 2010
They all look like a bunch of angry Subaru lesbians... angry at the fact that they are ugly and no one would pay them for sex.
alanocuSep 18, 2010
How stupid. If this group is concerned about women's rights, they should burn the Koran to protest lashings and stonings and various punishments carried out by the worst abusers of women in the world - Islamic Fundamentalist terrorist countries and organizations.
And if they're afraid being issued a fatwa by the religion of peace, the least they could do is donate that money to a women's organization that has the brains not to burn money, and the ability to put that same money to good use by helping someone.
neotechniSep 18, 2010
I am a feminist, and I facepalmed.
They didn't even burn the money, they burned a check saying they could pick up the money.
That money could have been very helpful.
They cut off their nose to spite their face.
pjdolandSep 18, 2010
Devil's Advocate: Burning a $100,000 check might be a pretty good way to gain $200,000 worth of publicity for your organization or cause.
mrmistoffeleesSep 18, 2010
yeah but if the general consensus from this is that they're complete idiots, then i'm not sure how this publicity is going to translate to $$$
actanonverba71Sep 19, 2010
The most hateful stupid vile feminazis are the middle and upper middle class spoiled (no offense, but usually white) bitches who have more comfortable lives than 95% of people in the history of the world and 99% of people in the present day. These are the same women that keep prositution illegal and, therefore, dangerous. God forbid these spoiled bitches lose their totalitarian stranglehold on what "correct" behavior and "values" are or have to compete with street-smart working class girls who could use the cash to get ahead in life. Not to mention, these pieces of garbage middle class feminazis would hate to lose their stranglehold on controlling male sexuality. These women know the truth: although many of them look good, they are not sensual and are about as sexually exciting as a cold wet towel. If single men had the choice to date these frigid bitches just so they can have a sex life or just have occasional HONEST, legal exchanges with professional sex workers they would chose the latter.
badgerbusSep 19, 2010
I would think that these groups would want to ally themselves with CL more than anything...
Prostitution isn't going away, and at least with CL girls could be their own pimp, and could get the phone number of potential clients.
Now, it's back out on the street corner and back to getting a backhand full of some dudes gold rings when you get out of line.
Even if you don't like prostitution you have to agree that doing it on CL at least made it safer for the women doing it. The people who have been fighting against CL are, in effect, causing more women to come to harm by forcing them to look for work in more dangerous ways.
binaryechoSep 19, 2010
in other news, women's groups are dumb.
