I know this is The Onion, but there is some truth to this. There are many people who, believe it or not, have never been around or know someone who is gay.
My boyfriend and I have met a lot of people and there has been no one that we haven't been able to win over. A lot of this resistance comes from the unknown or the uncertain. I don't know anyone that hates me because I'm gay.
The key to winning someone over on gay rights/marriage is to sit down with them, get to know them, and help them understand. It does the gay community no good to simply accuse people of bigotry and hatred without first making the effort to communicate.

Actually i would argue that most people in America have met and likely know someone who is gay. Whether they KNOW their acquaintance is gay or not, is a different story
Some Math:
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality#Demographics
4% of electorate self-identified as gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
So when you meet someone, there is a 96% chance they are straight. Unless you grew up on a stranded island, I would venture to say its safe that you have met well over 100 people in your life. But even with that conservative number, that is .96^100 chance that all 100 are straight, which equals: .017, or 1.7%. So that means, there is a 98% chance that AT LEAST one of those people are gay.
Granted this math is assuming an equal distribution, and not taking into account grouping of similar demographics, and other similar things that can skew stats. But all that aside, the point is, that there is a VERY GOOD chance, that someone you know, work with, workout with, go to church with or happen to have game night with, is a homosexual, whether you realize it or not. And whats crazy, it just might turn out that you like them as a person...

Not to mention that number just increases when you take into account closeted people (however many that may be (probably a lot)).

I've been involved in theatre all my life, and I've been around many, many homosexuals. I like the people themselves. Neither I nor the Catholic church has a problem with the people. Not a bit. Just as I have a propensity to over-eat or be romantic with my wife more than perhaps she'd prefer, we all are responsible for our actions. All I or the Catholic church says is that 2 people of the same sex coming together is not what our bodies are made for. Is there something that biologically causes two people of the same sex to be attracted to each other? Perhaps. Does that mean we need to call it marriage or perceive it as a natural bonding of two people whose nature is to procreate. Absolutely not. You want medical and financial rights of "married" people, fine. Just don't call it marriage...

I admit it. I thought this was real...you got me.
garryfieldsJul 14, 2011
I give you a digg for honesty. But this is probably one of the more far-fetched Onion stories out there...
misteratozJul 14, 2011
Yeah true. I was suspicious. It didn't occur to me to look for satire...

I think it was the mutual interest in Spanish cuisine that did it; I hear the Vicar of Christ is a sucker for a perfectly turned out paella.

Haven't had good Paella in a while. :-(

I had hope that they were facing reality reading the title,
alas, we'll have to wait even longer for sensible reactions from the religous figure heads.

Onion, I know,
but I will never understand what is wrong with 2 legal adults being able to marry.
It needs to be said over and over. It shouldn't be "gay marriage", it should just be marriage.
And 2 legal adults should be able to "I do" it, anywhere in America

Imagine? The followers of an imaginary super being, agreeing to change their imaginary set of rules, thereby rescuing homosexuals from an imaginary eternity in an imaginary hell. Someday. Someday.

the catholic stance on this whole thing is cool. sex always feels better with no condom, right? the sensation, man, it's beautiful.
