The movement toward greater democracy in Burma is a good thing and will help the people., People may decry the obvious presence of a quarter of seats in Parliament in Burma being assigned to uniformed military in the secretive new capital and the fancy new digs built for meeting as evidence of only superficial change. A change in the face of military rule - but it is a fact at least here in the US that there are plans afoot involving the hidden gov behind the one that's visible as well.. Burma is moving toward democracy and greater freedom of expression for the people and better access to information and good journalism while the US is moving in the other direction.. Granted each has a long way to go to reach the level of the other but that only has to do with scale of gain or loss depending on one's view.
The US has had the dramatic rise of the prison industry and private military contractors and has militarized the police to a large extent with swat teams coordinated throughout the states. They use things like area denial to counter protest.
It, the US has given rights of freedom of speech through money to corporations to influence voting. Today people want to occupy the courts to protest.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at a meeting with business - "We have to position ourselves to lead in a world where security is shaped in boardrooms and on trading floors, as well as on battlefields." I copied this from somewhere but even that right of expression on the internet is presently under attack in the US in both Houses of what amount to our Parliament.. What I'm saying one country Burma is going toward freedom and democracy while the other, the US where I live and am a citizen is going rapidly in the other direction.
