You know, I'm actually willing to believe they have good intentions, in that I can buy that they actually want peace. It's been a rough decade and they've probably realized that fighting isn't getting them anywhere. However, at the end of the day, the end goal is to convince us that they can be left alone so they can weasel their way back into power and carry on with their crimes against humanity.
Now normally, I'm the first to admit that I see something wrong with getting involved with other people's affairs. Normally I'd say, let them do whatever the hell they want so long as they promise not to bother us anymore. However, we've seen the atrocities they committed while ruling over Afghanistan, even ignoring their efforts to hide Osama bin Laden. Under most circumstances, I'd just say if Afghanistan wants them back, that's their funeral, but for better or for worse, we do legitimately have a say at the moment, and I'd hate the idea of actively making a decision that allowed those creeps to get back into power.

you're mixing the taliban up with al qaeda / mujahideen
taliban was not involved in the conflict with Russia back in the 80's they are a newer group based from quran schools in Pakistan

Different names, same dudes. Mullah Omar, is the spiritual leader of the Taliban fought as a guerrilla with the Mujahideen 89-92 which the usa financed.
