dailymail.co.uk — People sterilized against their will under a discredited North Carolina state program should each be paid $50,000, a task force voted today.
This would mark the first time a state has moved to compensate victims of a once-common public health practice called eugenics.
The panel recommended that the money go to verified, living victims, including those who are alive now but may die before the lawmakers approve any compensation.

You know. If I was sterilized against my knowledge, I'd be looking for more then $50,000.
shroomtimeJan 11, 2012
Maybe $50k/year.
tastemyrainbowJan 11, 2012
after a 500k downpayment
mlw4428Jan 11, 2012
After a $10M "we're sorry you can't have kids" apology donation.
The_SovereignJan 11, 2012
To be perfectly honest, I can't put a price on my ability to procreate. I mean, it's as fundamental as anything can get.
I suppose if you end my line, I will end your line. I can't have kids? Your kids are as good as dead, and I am going to chop your balls off.
Tit for tat.
macbookformeJan 11, 2012
What a lousy compensation lawyer did that silly number???
ncmusicJan 11, 2012
It wasn't a lawyer is was a committee setup but the state. They apparently wanted something not punitive, but also low enough the state would actually pay.
ninhJan 11, 2012
Which means that a class action suit that makes their heads swim should follow this insulting offer.
ncmusicJan 11, 2012
This all came from a woman who tried to sue for $1 million but was rejected by the courts. It's pretty ridiculous. I don't know what the right compensation is but this isn't it.
Apparently >50% of states had similar programs, NC's I think went on the longest (the 70's some victims are in their early 40s) and it's the first state to compensate anyone, maybe even apologize and admit wrong doing I think.
ninhJan 11, 2012
It amazes me that the genital mutilation activists are not all over this like white on rice. Oh wait .. it's not in Africa, that's why.
lurchermanJan 11, 2012
Are there genital mutilation activists?

I think a few states have apologized, although it is shocking that this is the first time people are being compensated.
RavenshoodieJan 11, 2012
"Most victims were poor, black women deemed unfit to be parents. People as young as ten were sterilized for reasons as minor as not getting along with schoolmates or being promiscuous."
This is outrageous Nazi type s**t, right here in our own country. What else have they been doing to us? Full disclosure should be demanded.
debasisgJan 12, 2012
Check the history. Hitler was inspired by the KKK activities in the US.
quisquisJan 12, 2012
Not just KKK... the entire eugenics movement started in the western academic world.
ka5p3rJan 11, 2012
and you people thought Josef Mengele,Ernst Kaltenbrunner where evil villains.if you google experiments on american civilians you would see that nazi doctors was no deference.
RavenshoodieJan 11, 2012
We brought them over after WWII. Operation Paperclip.
knailbomb420Jan 12, 2012
After we brought who over ? Mengele died from old age in S. America and Keltenbrunner was hanged after the Nuremberg trials.

There was no difference because the vast majority of both groups are the same, not evil, people.
garrywJan 11, 2012
I paid $900 for my snipping. These women got it for free??? Then complain?
toxnubJan 11, 2012
your comment made me laugh. I am sorry that I cannot prevent the idiots from burying you.
shyloveJan 11, 2012
Only the programs discovered have such compensation, How many secret programs never are discovered in their experimentation and manipulation of society, don't be lulled into think this changes anything... these programs just like cia experiments probably just re-emerge some place else. We are living the Truman Show...

You're not the porn star shy love, are you?
shyloveJan 12, 2012
all stars are porn stars and stars draw stares that look down stairs as well as up stairs... and stereotypes
drjjlJan 11, 2012
This is an incredibly sad story, not only because people's rights were violated so egregiously, but also because this isn't something money can truly compensate for.
neotechniJan 11, 2012
They could adopt easily.
It's not as if Africa has a shortage of parentless black children
drjjlJan 11, 2012
Adoption is an option for anyone, but that would be little comfort to these women and isn't really the point. If you're someone who wanted or planned to have your own biological children and this ability was unjustly taken away from you by the government, there truly is nothing that can compensate for that.
These women had their bodies tampered with and their rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness grossly violated. A $50,000 payout is insulting.
neotechniJan 12, 2012
(My) Point withdrawn.
BLPJan 11, 2012
I am not sure where the blame should be placed, or even if it should be. I just think it is very sad.
johnnysoftwareJan 11, 2012
I think the idea is to transfer some of the victims sadness away to where it belongs.
debasisgJan 12, 2012
Now realize the we condemn the Nazis, show support to Israel after butchering the native Indians and African slaves. And democracy is our biggest export.
hopefuldavJan 11, 2012
Sad stuff, but a good article. If, as I suppose, the number of people that were sterilized against their will, was a deciding factor in the amount of compensation. That is not right. You cannot say that I am due compensation for my pain and suffering and then lump me into a group to make it more affordable for you to compensate me, The number of people caused harm should not be a factor. 50k is not enough.
tastemyrainbowJan 11, 2012
only 50k??? hmmmmm
salbatrossJan 11, 2012
What s**tty compensation.
johnnysoftwareJan 11, 2012
My, what does the anti-abortion, anti-condom crowd say about this?
stuffradioJan 11, 2012
They probably support her. What's your point with your question? You should be asking, "what does the pro-abortion, pro-condom crowd say about this".Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bookantJan 11, 2012
"what does the pro-abortion,"
There is no such crowd.
The pro-choice crowd finds this disgusting and unacceptable just as they do any attempt by the state/relgious nuts to take away any individuals' reproductive freedoms.
stuffradioJan 11, 2012
Pro-choice is pro-abortion. They are for abortion or having the option. If they are for having the option to have an abortion, they are pro-abortion. If they are not, they are anti-abortion. There is no fence to stand on. You are either for or against.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bookantJan 12, 2012
Wrong. You can be either for or against the individuals' right to decide this matter for themselves, regardless of how you feel/what you believe about the procedure itself.
seroevoJan 12, 2012
You can support the ability to choose without supporting the choice that someone might make, but only to a point.
Ultimately, you can't be entirely against a potential outcome if you'd allow it to be a choice.
To use an example, if I said I supported your freedom of choice to either hit me or not, but was entirely opposed to you hitting me and felt that you have committed a crime if you did, then that's not a true freedom of choice. At that point, you're really just saying I have a choice as long as I pick what you want me to pick.
So those that are pro-choice, while maybe not wanting abortions, still have to be reasonably fine with that potential outcome, compared to the pro-life/anti-abortion which don't want abortion to be an option at all.
inajeepJan 12, 2012
Only sith deal in absolutes. The world is not black and white. Good vs evils is a fairy tale. Grays do exist.
neverstandstillJan 11, 2012
I think everyone should be sterilized at birth and then once that person reaches a responsible age (lets say 18) they can petition to have the sterilization reversed if they wish to have children. Part of that petition would be being able to prove that you’re healthy (mentally and physically) enough to raise and child and more importantly that you can PROVIDE for that child and will be able to give it the best quality of life possible.
I don’t agree with what happened to these women – but as a big picture I would love to see a control, like the one I just mentioned, put in place. Could you imagine the effects this would have on the economy, crime, society, and so many other things.
neotechniJan 11, 2012
"I think everyone should be sterilized at birth and then once that person reaches a responsible age (lets say 18) they can petition to have the sterilization reversed if they wish to have children"
It can't be reversed in 100% of cases, and humanity would practically go extinct.
neverstandstillJan 12, 2012
I get the point you're trying to make but you're just being dramatic. Even if it could only be reversed in 90% of cases the population would still have a healthy growth. Besides, with all the money that the government would save by not having to support people who couldnt afford the children to begin with, they could easily develop a method of sterilization (and sterilization reversal) that was nearly perfect.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I think you're a troll.
I think it would destroy the country it was implemented in. I mean, I know I would want to see mass rioting in response to a Nazi takeover. I'd be right there on the front lines.
neverstandstillJan 12, 2012
A Nazi takeover? "Nazis viewed the progress of humanity as depending on the Aryans and believed that it could maintain its dominance only if it retained its purity and instinct for self-preservation" - If you bothered to read what I wrote you would know that I included EVERYONE regardless of race or nationality.
The only people who would be rioting are the people who shouldnt be bringing children into this world.
The_SovereignJan 12, 2012
So you completely miss the link between forced sterilization and Nazis. Ok then. Nice talking to you, psychopath.
neverstandstillJan 12, 2012
I'm not saying that we should forcibly sterilize the entire world so that the “rich white man” can take over the world. Get off your soapbox and open your mind to a debate. Did you bitch when you had to be tested to receive your driver’s license? Did you bitch when you had to apply for colleges? Are you going to bitch when you don’t get a job that you’re not qualified for? No, because the reason for these prerequisites is to see if you’re qualified. Why should someone that can’t support themselves be allowed to bring a child into this world just to suffer. It’s not meant to be unfair to everyone else, its meant to make it fair for everyone.
Psychopath? Grow up.
quisquisJan 12, 2012
Who gets to play god?
neverstandstillJan 12, 2012
I imagine if God existed this thread wouldnt even be needed.
quisquisJan 12, 2012
You clearly missed my point. What I'm asking is who makes the decision on who is or is not fit to have a child?
JLF2035Jan 12, 2012
I'll admit that I think there are some people that really do deserve to be sterilized; I actualy joke about it quite often. But, that still doesn't mean it should happen. Not in this country. How the hell does that even happen here anyway? Whoever did it should be forced to undergo the same procedure.
craig1958Jan 11, 2012
I'm amazed that this hasn't been the subject of a very large class action suit. Hopefully, this insulting offer will couse the suit to be filed.

the UNITED NATIONS and CARE routinely sterilized people of India to prevent overpopulation in the 60s, UN get your checkbook out if the public remembers

These programs remind me of the dis-topia novel Women on the Edge of Time, the fact that we even had these programs scares me
