700+ diggs and can't even get the front page. You corporate media whores. Kevin Rose is taking it up the ass from Ted Turner and Time Warner. Telegraph's dick is in his mouth.
OFF TO REDDIT WE GO!
sixchamberAug 27, 2010
Let's examine the front page closer now shall we. There are currently 16 stories and all 16 were submitted by the source itself. What's that mean? It only took 48 hours for the lamestream media to have a chokehold on this s**t. The users have no voice anymore. This site is an aggregate for TechCrunch, Mashable, Wired, ArsTech, etc. That's all it is.
Cool idea Kevin Rose. You spent millions of dollars to create a giant RSS feed. Cool idea, bro. Mark my words: Digg V4 will go down in history as one of the biggest Tech blunders of all time. Kanye West voice: OF ALL TIME.
You don't even realize how bad you screwed up yet. When you lose 80% of your traffic in the next few months you will reap the fruits of your selling out.

The idea of Digg (I thought) was to see the best stories promoted by the most people not the stories that are paid advertisements with a few random ones thrown in by the digg algorithm because it thinks I should like them.
Digg RIP
piper999Aug 27, 2010
I used to like Digg when the front page had the best stories dugg up democratically by the most people.
Now it has a mixture of paid adverts and stuff the digg algorithm thinks I should like.
Screw it. Digg is dead now.
piper999Aug 27, 2010

johndiAug 27, 2010
I can't help it. In my mind "OF ALL TIME" is read through "The voice of God." The fail is far too epic for Kanye.

No, seriously, it won't even make the top 1000 tech blunders of all time.
Nobody will remember Digg in a few years after it's gone.
brainrazerAug 28, 2010
Bob told Kevin: "Who are we all kidding. Go look at all the top stories right now. It is completely being taken over by self posts from the big media dogs. It is an RSS feed of major media companies. And this entire belief that we need or want to share stories to our Facebook friends is just ridiculous. How can you be in the internet business and not know that Facebook is not really used that way? Are you surrounded by that many yes men?"
Kevin replied in part: "We promote the stories that are dugg, I'm sorry that the stories you are digging aren't making the homepage."

For the past two years, I have used Digg multiple times per day, almost every day.
Seeing how s**tty it is in comparison to before I may stop completely.
Thanks Digg staff, or whoever actually made these changes happen, way to ruin one of the best sites I know.
Of course if Diggs changes again, this time for the better, they could win me back, however, at the moment, son, I am disappoint.
hiphocAug 28, 2010
True, digg was about unique stories from small sites having fair play with big sites. It was about content. Produce something good, or have a power user submit then watch some good traffic go to your page. Fair and square. Digg has been turned into cable TV. 300 channels and nothing to watch. This is what will happen to internet 2. We are all on the web running away from the crap on TV and the newspapers. But much like Jason, Freddy or Michael Meyers. The mainstream media will not go quietly into the night.
Just one question, would The Oatmeal have a chance at being discovered on the new digg?
aliengoodsAug 28, 2010
Kevin Rose hates geek people.

Don't underestimate the silent majority. Just because a few people go nuts doesn't mean that everyone will leave. I won't; I don't mind this new look. It was all corporate junk and lame top 14 lists before anyhow but it was better than anything else (but just barely).
If they did lose 80% of their traffic, you can bet there'd be swift changes. I'm pretty sure they won't.

Apparently everyone wants Digg to go backrupt rather than try to strike a balance to pay the bills? Too many trust-fund kids or teenagers who don't have to pay rent here that don't understand such things.

bury him all you want - Tyns is right. We say we love and value and want the old digg, but the old digg WASN"T paying the bills.
Anyone who's run a business knows you can only be non-profitable for so long.
That being said _ I don't like the new digg, nor think this was a good move either - BUT...something needed to be done to make it profitable.
thekipperAug 28, 2010
Not only did they not some how make the front page, they aren't even in the 'Top in 7 Days'. You know, the page that just lists the stories with the most diggs by the order of digg?? Yeah, I guess the algorithm must have just skipped over those stories by accident.

They fixed up Digg v4 like it was an RSS feed
It's permanently adverts
Everything is organized so badly I don't recognize it
I can't tell the ads from the articles
Baby check this out, I've got something to say
Man, it's so s**t in here
When they restore version three and I can think again

Seriously? Don't like digg, don't use it. Don't use it to talk about how much you don't like it. This is why Baratunde Thurston called diggers dumber than redditors. Go on, go and migrate over there, I'm sure they'll be very unhappy to see you.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I gave it a chance and its still bad. The two biggest reasons to come to Digg was to see different content and to be able to vote on the submissions. Thats all gone, can't bury, site is buggy as hell or submissions have had their dig button disabled. I'm not happy with the new design or losing features that brought me here. For crying out loud, Digg looks like Facebook!

It's nonsense for him to suggest that somehow the problems are the result of a surge in visits. I will not, for a second, believe that there has been some orders-of-magnitude jump in usage of the site. I sure know I'm using it a lot less right now.
geogeerAug 27, 2010
The question is how many unique visits a day does it normally get?

Looking ahead, this is more than just a poor rollout and continuing bugs. They can be fixed. It is the missing features, the ones that made digg a useful site that kept me occupied hours a day. If you don't mind the lack of features that previous digg had then you didn't use the site to its potential. You would most likely be happy with RSS feeds and twitter. Good luck to you.
njankAug 27, 2010
sorry, I liked your comment but forgot to digg you three times. only got one in. hopefully the next person can fix my mistake.
pktgumbyAug 27, 2010
I was able to give him 5. Although honestly, I don't think this is working as we think, it's likely getting one digg from me and then 4 other people had dugg him and it didn't refresh until I dugg him.
acknotswAug 27, 2010
I'll give it a week to see how it all shakes out, then I'm going somewhere with a better public image, like 4chan....
crazyredivanAug 27, 2010
That's my biggest problem, and I think what Digg is failing to realize: it's not like we're complaining that the layout changed. The entire functionality changed. It's not the same product anymore.
When Facebook makes changes, you can opt out and ignore all the stupid s**t they keep adding. I can't opt out of not having "upcoming" or "bury" capabilities.
They've killed Digg.
Closed AccountAug 27, 2010
To be fair, we're also complaining about how inexplicably buggy the site has become. And it's much easier to respond to THOSE complaints than to the more pressing problem of Digg's entire premise being eviscerated and replaced with corporate sewage.

if you had put this comment up a week ago, it wouldve been buried like crazy...
i had the new digg for a couple weeks before it officially came out and i used it for about 10 mins (this was before all the big problems from high volumes of traffic) and i simply did not like it... kept using the old one...
the link for the new digg was new.digg.com they should throw up an old.digg.com
bmad965Aug 27, 2010
I wouldn't mind it so much if I didn't have to see it every 2 seconds.
gdj11Aug 27, 2010
I don't even care about the bugs on the new Digg, because I know they'll be fixed. What I do care about is how everything is so cluttered and unintuitive. I used to go on Digg probably every half hour, now it's only a couple times a day.
spicychickadeeAug 27, 2010
That sounds about right for me as well. I don't bother stopping by nearly as much as I used to. But then I guess they don't care, they're looking for "unique hits" now instead of repeat traffic.
theavenger3Aug 27, 2010
Not only does the new Digg suck, they've censored many VERY popular articles from reaching the front page.
These articles mainly are filled with Diggers who are fed up and have moved to Reddit:

themachine1Aug 27, 2010
I'm convinced Digg is no longer using a computer algorithm to determine which stories are front paged (Top News). There is some fat f**k at Digg headquarters sitting at a desk manually deciding.
kmyeAug 27, 2010
I used to defend digg and its system and the integrity of its system against the conspiracy theories of fanatical Paul supporters who were pissed they couldn't take over the entire front page. I still think that was true back then, because there buries out there, and much of the attempted gaming was being done with new and always-related accounts, things that would be easy to account for in their algo...
But now, particularly without buries out there, but also because of the organic and distributed nature of who's been digging these, it seems extremely plausible that whoever is running show, maybe the VCs, really is restricting certain stories from FPing...
however, there's still no way they're choosing which stories DO hit the FP...there were two big accouncements that FPed *yesterday* about how D4 *might* go live the next day. Unless some element within the company was *trying* to make new digg look as silly and awful as possible, that wouldn't be happening under direct control...
theavenger3Aug 27, 2010
We can easily deduce that Digg is preventing the negative stories about Digg 4.0 from reaching the front page, as they would be embarassing.
How else would you explain this link, with over 1200 Diggs, not reaching the front page?
http://digg.com/news/worldnews/rip_digg_com
kmyeAug 27, 2010
@ta3 There's motive, means, and a lot of strongly suggestive evidence. There's also a long history of digg acting very ethically in these kinds of situations. But that past upstanding example makes this look even shadier, and I tend to lean towards your suspicion here, and maybe it's because different people might be calling the shots now...
It's especially hard to figure out what happened to the RIP story, as the submitter was banned pretty early on after its submission, and had been basically spamming its link all over the place. Those are kinds of things I'd put on the de-weighting side of an algorithm if I was building one for here. But there've been other stories without any of those issues that still haven't made it, while all these bulls**t ads with 60 diggs have FPed, so, it's looking increasingly sketchy imo...

pjhorrexAug 27, 2010
No, people would get used to a new coat of paint. This isn't a simple swap of a CSS file or two. It's a complete overhaul of how the site works and now favors content creators promoting their own stuff over individual users finding and sharing cool stuff around the web for all to see.

I noticed the Wikipedia page hasn't been updated.
"Digg is a social news website. The site's cornerstone function consists of letting people vote stories up or down, called digging and burying, respectively. Many stories get submitted every day, but only the most Dugg stories appear on the front page."

The Encyclopedia Dramatica page has been updated, and it's gold:
"On August 25th 2010, Digg decided to demonstrate how quickly a once-popular website could completely ruin itself by implimenting the worst brand relaunch since New Coke. The New Digg, which looks like Facebook barfed all over it, takes the big problem with the old Digg (cliques digging eachother's lame, biased stories) and elevates that style of story popularity to being the only possible way to get stories listed on the front page. The New Digg is expected to be capable of completely ruining the company within 2 months, faster than any corporate suicide in recent memory. Testifying to the overwhelming success of the redesign at ruining the site, for the first time in Digg history, there is 100% agreement in the comment sections about a topic, that being that the site sucks now."
zannaduAug 27, 2010
Very nice. That takes away some of the sting about how painfully inaccurate the basic description of Digg is anymore.
