One blogger who has called for religious tolerance has been detained who accuse him of blasphemy and of promoting anti-Islamic concepts such as gay rights.
Khilath Rasheed, whose website was blocked last month, has said he was being victimized because he belonged to the Sufi sect of Islam and not the majority Sunni branch recognized by the authorities.
Tourism, Maldives' largest economic activity, accounts for 28% of GDP and more than 60% of foreign exchange receipts. Over 90% of government tax revenue comes from import duties and tourism-related taxes.
It is going to be an interesting time for the Maldive populous.
This is just recent escalation. It was for long time forbidden to bring any non-Islamic faith symbols or materials into the country (ex. jewelry cross, Bible, books talking about any other religion, ...). Regime also for very long time strictly controls interaction of foreign visitors with native population, there is no freedom of movement both for local population and even more for visitors. That is the same Islam which in the West prophesies that it is misunderstood "religion of peace". If Western democracies have had any backbone countries like this would be shunned and not accepted into any international organization nor dealt with diplomatically or economically, until they provide basic equalities and freedoms.
