They will be rolling with these for years. Aftershocks can be as big as the original quake and gradually decrease in strength over the period after the shock. The earth broke the tension in the spot of the quake but now it tenses elsewhere along the fault because of the original release.

While I too am glad that it wasn't a strong one, earthquakes like this are not anything new for the people of Japan considering that they are located at what is geographically known as the "Ring of Fire".
