assh**es. I'd like to sacrifice them to the gods of stupid.
clitniblr036Jan 3, 2012
That's a long wait list.
berkanaJan 3, 2012
They would be pleased; the farce is strong with these farmers.
rudegarJan 3, 2012
no sacrifices makes the god stronger, and stupid is strong enough as it is
neotechniJan 3, 2012
One can not make something stronger that does not exist in the first place
razorsfuryJan 4, 2012
how do you know that the god doesn't exist? prove it.
razorsfuryJan 4, 2012
people to sacrifice to make gods stronger. they sacrifice to gain the favor of the gods.
razorsfuryJan 4, 2012
people don't sacrifice*

armedrebelJan 3, 2012
A year when people still believe in god(s) despite all the evidence generated to the contrary, unfortunately.
razorsfuryJan 4, 2012
There is evidence that proves god(s) don't exist? Let me see some of that.
Closed AccountJan 4, 2012
Apparently it doesn't matter in that part of the world
johnomazzJan 3, 2012
At least the country isn't going along with it. They will be imprisoned and possible put to death.
norman619Jan 3, 2012
I will never get how anyone could ever think that the taking of a child's life like this is ever a good idea. This is beyond sad.
krazydlJan 3, 2012
That is some f**ked up s**t.
jasmoran66Jan 3, 2012
One of Earth's greatest s**tholes...
PsychcompJan 3, 2012
The question is, do we blame the individual for these barbaric actions, or do we blame the religion? As not everyone who believes in the religion does this, and the fact the state is charging them with murder, we do not blame the religion for their actions, we blame them. Anything else will harm other members of the religion who had nothing to do with this.
charlesdkraussJan 3, 2012
Irrational beliefs can lead to immoral actions.
f**k religion.
Ouzel7Jan 3, 2012
You want the atheism tally of deaths again? Didn't think so.
charlesdkraussJan 3, 2012
Sure. Let's see the list of people that atheists killed because of their lack of belief in a god. We can also say that because they didn't believe in Zeus they killed people. Or they don't believe in Osiris they killed people. Or they don't believe in Horus so they killed people.
pinkfish411Jan 4, 2012
Nobody ever kills just because they believe in a god, either. They kill because they have certain beliefs about what belief in particular god entails, just as atheists kill because they have particular reasons for rejecting belief in God and have certain beliefs about the implications of that rejection.
Point is, anti-religious forms of atheism have led to countless deaths, and that's something that nobody with a knowledge of history can deny.
razorsfuryJan 4, 2012
People don't kill because they believe in god. They kill because others don't believe in their god.
"atheists kill because they have particular reasons for rejecting belief in God and have certain beliefs about the implications of that rejection"
That's the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I refuse to believe that more people have lost their lives because of atheism versus those who have lost their lives in the name of a faith.
"anti-religious forms of atheism have led to countless deaths"
The least you can do is give examples since no one with knowledge of history can deny it.
pinkfish411Jan 4, 2012
People don't kill simply because others don't believe in their god, either. They kill because others don't believe in their god AND because they believe that those who don't believe in their god deserve to be killed. The generic state of "believing in a god" really doesn't lead to any sorts of actions on its own.
And I've sorry if you're ignorant of history, but atheists have killed for reasons tied up with their atheism. Russian communism is of course the most prominent example, and as a PhD candidate in the midst of a dissertation on politics and religion in Russia, I can say quite confidently that any atheist apologists who say that none of the Russian revolutionaries did anything bad because of their atheism is full of s**t. The example illustrates very clearly my point: the atheists in Russia had specific reasons for rejecting belief in God, and those reasons led to an openly anti-religious form of atheism that led in turn to the violent suppression of most forms of religious faith.
The point is, arguing about the evil that "theism" or "atheism" does is pointless. What matters is the wider context in which those generic categories are situated and the specific content they are given.
charlesdkraussJan 4, 2012
"Nobody ever kills just because they believe in a god, either."
-People's beliefs change their actions. And when I say beliefs I mean anything that you believe. If you find out someone lied to you about something, it's going to change your actions. (There are better metaphors than this, and hopefully you can think of some yourself.) On the same turn religious people will change their actions based on their religious beliefs. The muslim suicide bombers REALLY did think that when they flew those planes in to the twin towers that they were going to heaven where 72 virgins are waiting for them. They didn't kind of believe this. They didn't mostly believe this. They REALLY believed it.
"just as atheists kill because they have particular reasons for rejecting belief in God and have certain beliefs about the implications of that rejection."
-I reject every single god that man has created. This is somewhere in the thousands if not tens of thousands. Rejecting a belief in them has not caused me to want to harm anyone.
Do you want to kill people because you don't believe in Zeus, Krishna, Osiris, or Horus? Killing because you have a LACK of belief in something is the most ridiculous thing I hear from religious people. You guys are nuts.
"Dumb de dumb de dumb... I don't believe in alchemy or astrology... time to get out the murderin equipment!"
pinkfish411Jan 4, 2012
Yes, beliefs can impact one's actions (just as actions can impact one's beliefs). I've never disputed this. I would probably dispute that the 9/11 terrorists did what they did solely because of their belief about heaven, because that's an extremely simplistic understanding of what causes most terrorism; but I've never denied that some religious beliefs can have bad consequences.
I've also never said that rejecting the existence of this or that god is necessarily going to lead anybody to go out and kill anyone, just like believing in a god isn't necessarily going to make somebody want to kill someone, and won't for the vast majority of people. But neither atheism nor theism exist in a vacuum; they are generic descriptions of complex sets of beliefs that are held for a wide variety of different reasons. Some forms of belief in a god can lead to evil, and some forms of rejection of a god can lead to evil--and some have in history.
I have no desire to go kill anybody because I don't believe in Zeus. But if there were a lot of people out there who believed in Zeus, and I thought that belief in Zeus was holding humanity back from reaching some cherished goal, I would probably be inclined to take positively anti-Zeus measures, and that may include violating the rights of people who believe in Zeus.
The problem with you sophistic insistence that atheism can never lead to evil is that you insist on using the word in an artificially restricted sense. Atheism is lack of belief in God, yes, but in the real world, very few people--even self-proclaimed atheists--use it to mean nothing more than that. All atheisms occur in wider cognitive contexts, just as all theisms do, and those contexts are what flesh out the generic descriptor "atheism" or "theism" and give them content that can lead to good or bad behavior.
neotechniJan 3, 2012
zero. Wow, that was easy.
Ouzel7Jan 3, 2012
You know better .... but you are anti theists ....so you'll never admit it. You just think the story is rife for your anti-theist comments.
theTokyoBlondeJan 3, 2012
When the world falls apart around you, people turn to, do the most crazy sh!t. Can happen anywhere, I think.
odkinJan 3, 2012
It's like when liberals want to to sacrifice our means to feed our children because industrial and energy production makes Gaia cry.
razorsfuryJan 4, 2012
that was just dumb.... way to make it political..

A graphic example of ignorance...very sad.
redhautemamaJan 4, 2012
Never no that this era there are places that are not yet civilize, who still believe in human sacrifice in exchange for good harvest.
munionhunterJan 3, 2012
Those wacky terrorists, when will they ever learn?
razorsfuryJan 4, 2012
huh?
slangitmanJan 3, 2012
Because no one in the West has ever killed a child for stupid reasons. (How many of you believe in the prophet Abraham, who was willing to gorge out his son's guts to make God happy?) But I gotta hand it to them: the carving of the Aztec sacrifice put a nice racist twist on the whole thing.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
originalspeedysJan 3, 2012
But if it's their culture, who are we to judge?
dusanmalJan 3, 2012
Just another example of what happens when social system is based on collective instead on the individual. In this particular case Left can see the evil because it have been done for religious, irrational purpose. But irrational/religious part is not the root of that evil. The root is the concept that collective benefit is more important than individual (in this case deeply rooted in Hindu religion but in general, Progressive concepts are fundamentally not much different). As soon as we allow "benefit of the majority" (99%?) or "benefit of the Earth" (eco-nazis) or any such concept to dominate society (ex. public healthcare for everyone because of its collective benefit) - we are on the way toward sacrificing individual life and liberties for proverbial "sacrificial liver". Individual right as more important than any collective, societal or Global benefit is the only way away from this kind of brutality.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Ok...wasted that 30 seconds of time I'll never get back...
humanitJan 3, 2012
Argh. You really only seem to have eyes for black and white. We have had universal health care and education (including free universities) for generations now here in northern europe and consider them the same way that you probably consider publich highways. If the US can not do it, it is because of systematic corruption (corporations and individuals milking the system because of poor legistlation), not because "it can not be done". All extreme oversimplified belief systems should be avoided, the devil lies in the details. People are in fact more productive easily when they do not have to worry about personal bancrupty by illness or any such thing, life is complicated enough and there are reasons to work hard without slave wages. 'nuf said.
clitniblr036Jan 3, 2012
Thank you, humanit. You hit the nail right on the head.
sloppyjoes7Jan 3, 2012
"If the US can not do it," that means that we're smart enough to not go down that road to economic destruction.
caseycooldJan 3, 2012
Yeah how did that work out for use during the dubya years? Oh wait...
norman619Jan 3, 2012
Actually we are trying to do just that with Obama care. People don't get that nothing is free and that government tends to hide the true cost of programs like this to keep the ignorant masses happy to the detriment of the nation's fiscal health and viability. The EU is paying for their stupidity now just as our country is paying for the decades of similar irresponsible spending.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
norman619Jan 3, 2012
And those healthcare systems are underfunded because they are insanely expensive and a big part of why the EU is in such trouble now.
This had me LMAO:
"People are in fact more productive easily when they do not have to worry about personal bancrupty by illness or any such thing."
How many EU nations are facing bankruptcy thanks to social policies like the one you seem to be so proud of?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

*Waves from Canada* Oh, it can be done.
And sure, we may pay higher personal taxes or have a higher cost of living than Americans (not by much)...but I've also never, for a second of my life, wondered what it would feel like to get hurt and be scared of whether or not I could afford to be made well again.
My spouse and I are both young professionals in industries unlikely to have been affected by the kind of economic downturn that hit America...Even with that security, I still want to live in a society that takes care of its sick and injured, whether they currently have a job or not.
To me, things like welfare and social assistance are on a completely different level than your physical health and well-being...

I always think it is funny as an American that it is said "this is the greatest country in the world", when we dont have things that countries we helped destroy in WWII have enjoyed for 50 years or longer.
Our government took away the controls that were in place to prevent what has happened now, which is the big greedy infection of corporate money and power in politics.
With that we are left with crumbling infrastructure, programs that dont work and need overhauled, and lack of basic services due to for-profit prisons, medical care, and telecoms, and colleges, all of which should be government managed like any other public service or utility.
We'll see, i never believed 2012 would be the literal end of humanity, but based on the evidence our world may still be radically different by the end of the year. It's all at the boiling point now, real Americans and their own States have had enough of Federal shenanigans.
isaac7719Jan 3, 2012
Did you read the article? The farmers were poor. They wanted money. They sacrificed a 7 year old girl to "the gods" for better harvests so that they could get more money. That sounds like an individual, and a religious, incentive to me.
clitniblr036Jan 3, 2012
Exactly. For some reason, they always seem to gloss over that fact.
isaac7719Jan 3, 2012
But they didn't... read the article..
NeosopheusJan 3, 2012
"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
clitniblr036Jan 3, 2012
LOL! I love that scene.
kyzzyxxJan 3, 2012
So what you are saying is some people want to live in a society and some don't. He does not.
kyzzyxxJan 3, 2012
You know, you may not like his ability at the english language, but he does make a point. I am not saying he is right or wrong in THIS post, but, he does make a valid point. The problem is, you people are TOO f**kING STUPID AND IGNORANT to even come close to understanding the point he is making. Let me give you a f**king clue, dumbasses. What is the purpose of a society?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
