slate.com — The world’s most popular online newspaper is not the New York Times, USA Today, or the Wall Street Journal. You may not have ever visited it on purpose. If you’re American, you may not have even heard of it. It’s the Daily Mail.

Given the current state of affairs, being popular = being dumb.
jpurdyFeb 4, 2012
Fox News is an excellent example.

exactly :)

let me guess - you get all ur news and world views from john stewart and steven colbare? do you also use a mac computer and drive a mini cooper? or are you more of a closet hipster?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You do understand that there are hundreds of reputable news sources. Just becasue you ate stuck in the loop of "the Dwarf that became a sex slave to the two headed dog" mode of media

whacklyFeb 5, 2012
i don't get any news from jon stewart or stephen colbert (i are speller). I don't use a mac. I don't drive a mini. I don't own a sweater vest. I don't use an iphone. I don't drink craft beer. I've never used a scarf. I don't have a single ironic t-shirt. And yet, fox news still sucks. Perhaps you are confusing hipsters and intelligent people. I understand that there is often a lot of overlap between the two, but just because somebody is smart enough to not be taken in by the informational ouroboros of fox news doesn't mean they fix in the boxes you use to make sense of the big scary world.

A liberal's life is just one long awkward quest to be popular, yet they constantly deride those who succeed at being popular. Really makes you cringe.
I come from a success-oriented Middle Eastern backround and I registered Republican when I was 18 years old. While the standard liberal slackers spent their time smoking pot, listening to rap and monkeying each other's memes/catch phrases, I was preparing for medical school.
Now I make 10x as much as them and the poor babies are walking around with cardboard signs demanding that I pay more taxes so their alcohol fetal syndrome offspring can buy pot/rap albums.
And they will never win.
Because they are dumb.
Simply put. Dumb people all live the life I just outlined. They re-live it generation after generation, and they ironically (to the point of hilarity) call themselves "progressive" and "liberal". Hahaha.
Fact: Liberalism only appeals to:
1. Idiots
2. Clever businessmen making money off of idiots.
Doctors, CEOs, etc vote Republican because we've spent our lives learning while people our age sat around tasting their own semen and getting hipster tattoos.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Well that's strange. I've got a Master's degree and run a very successful business, but I never have and never will vote conservative.
Mainly it's because their policies are geared towards making the rich richer and the poor poorer, which anyone with half a brain cell can see leads to a less fair and less enjoyable society. But also conservatives, along with their offensive values, seem to have a tendency of being obnoxious pricks.
Sound familiar?
largomintFeb 5, 2012
You are so full of it al. You are obviously a butt hurt conservative basement dweller masquerading as a Doctor. Conservatism only appeals to the uneducated, uninformed, racist, bible thumping inbred hillbilly.
Fact: Conservatives are the new stupid. Read for yourself: P.S. very few Doctors are conservatives because they actually care about their patients.

Dumb people are conservative.
arpadFeb 4, 2012
So that would mean being ignored = being smart.
If the price of you feeling terribly clever is that everyone ignores you, that's a state of affairs I can live with.
And celebrate.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Congratulations to all those Diggers who helped make this happen. You've made a hate-filled bastion of yellow journalism masquerading as a newspaper, which spends its time in the gutter scrabbling around after salacious pieces of filth, the world's most read online "paper".

NY Post? Washington Times? No, but it could be - Daily Mail is right there with them. A terrible rag - not even good for wrapping day old fish. In fact, wrap the paper in the day old fish to keep it from smelling so badly
alanocuFeb 6, 2012
Why would you wrap day-old fish? That's gross. If you're wrapping up that 99 cent can of tuna you are saving for tomorrow, consider going to a fresh fish market. They have fresh fish caught that day. And you don't even have to be part of the 1 percent to afford it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Why hasn't the DailyFail been shut down yet? Weren't they part of the phone hacking scandal?
The most scandalous is their health and science sections were the mix junk science with legitimate news for the sole purpose of scaring people. The were at the forefront of the anti-vax movement. How many children died because of their irresponsible reporting?
ermac88Feb 4, 2012
I occasionally go to the dailymaill to look at pics of breasts. I had no idea it was considered a news source.
barfomaticFeb 4, 2012
That's all I read it for,the bikini pics !
DickybowFeb 5, 2012
You have to admire the sheer effort the Daily Mail puts into its web site; they update continuously. They do exhibit the usual hypocrisies though, complaining about women being treated badly, then leering over semi-nude pics. They are obsessed with Hitler; every day they have an article that references him, presumably to convince their neo-nazi readership that he was “a jolly good chap after all and we need someone like him to run the country now!”
lemonrindFeb 4, 2012
More importantly, how does this trash heap keep ending up on the front page of Digg? The only times I've landed on the Daily Mail is when I click on a misleading headline. If we are all more careful about what we click on, the Daily Mail will go away.
vitriolandangstFeb 4, 2012
It didn't just "luck into" the top spot.
There is a NEED by corporations to make people Dumber in both the US and England. A quality paper with facts, helpful information, and no reports of Zombies, would not be getting the financial backing of the Daily Fail.
Do they also have the "page 3 girls?" We have to consider that they might be the most popular entertainment rag and stop pretending this is a newspaper except in that it can serve the same purpose on the bottom of a puppy cage.
novantiiFeb 5, 2012
Do you have any idea how hilarious "corporations" conspiracy theories are to people who have worked at major corporate headquarters?
Believe me, corporations are indifferent to how stupid you are. They're indifferent to everything. They're tens of thousands of people who have never met each other partnering financially.
Your asinine perception of "corporations" is depressingly reminiscent of a teenager obtusely blaming "grownups" for everything. Some day you'll come to realize that you're the one lacking cognitive prowess, and that those sinister grown-ups and corporations barely notice you exist, much less are they on a mission to indoctrinate/control/stupify you.
vitriolandangstFeb 6, 2012
I've worked at small and big corporations.
I was at Bell South before AT&T took it over, and I worked at a financial services corporation and it was acquired by one of the top 20 companies on the planet.
Sure, your point that large corporations are indifferent is the reason that the comic "Dilbert" resonates with a lot of people. There might be overlap between my opinion and some teenagers -- that doesn't mean that young people don't occasionally get it right.
However -- I'm blogging, not writing a dissertation, so excuse me if I don't hem and haw about this and that consideration so that I don't trigger your "old man" reflex towards immature broad-brush comments.
>> But without going into a fact-finding link mission, I can definitely say there was a considered effort by CERTAIN corporations to dumb down people. There are corporate relationships making textbooks in Texas and there are back-door deals that push a certain Agenda on Clear channel stations.
There was an effort by the NeoCons and the PNAC group to infiltrate and take over Evangelical religious groups and turn them into the voting machine for the Republican party.
But I write for the people who "get it" -- not for the people who watch CNN or listen to talk by the water cooler and think they understand what is going on.

partrowFeb 4, 2012
How sad.
But it is not the fault of the Mail, it is the millions who salivate for salacious and disgusting tabloid news that creates the demand for this trash.
asfinktersezwutFeb 4, 2012
"But it is not the fault of the Mail"
Yes it is; just like shooting a man in the head because he asked you to do it is still murder. Simply because he begged you to do it does not absolve you of your responsibility for your own actions.
partrowFeb 4, 2012
The Mail is trash, and there will always be trash. And yes, they are responsible for what they are and do.
But they would not even be in business if there was not demand for their trash. They are filling a need, just like reality shows, the Super Bowl, prostitution and other businesses do. I was not implying that this demand removes the accountability of the supplier.
asfinktersezwutFeb 5, 2012
Sorry, it did appear that way, thanks for clearing things up a bit. 8-)

mbraynardFeb 5, 2012
What makes the paper so successful are the seductive article link/slugs they post along the right side of the article page. They are quiet vicious in pointing out the slightest hint of a pooch or a single dimple of cellulite.
But, in general, I haven't found them to be xenophobic. I think Slate's just a little butthurt they don't have the same amount of traffic.

The Telegraph and weekly Spectator rule.
novantiiFeb 5, 2012
"Telegraph" would be considered racist/offensive by American standards as well. I remember them publishing an article by some evolutionary scientists concluding that human races were not only real, but growing further from each other now more than ever due to extreme cultural gaps. If you published that in America, where 300 pound bucktoothed mutts have their ACLU/NAACP lawyers on speed dial ready to censor academic experts, you'd have a short journalistic career.

Get over yourselves. This paper isn't afraid to print stories having to do with race or just about anything else. Sure, they can be salacious, but I often ask myself, why am I reading about a U.S. event on a U.K. paper?
It seems that if news doesn't follow the standard liberal/Democrat narrative, it doesn't get reported on domestically. Sad.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

WTF? Then why is it called a bleeding heart liberal? Liberals are typically are protective of people or groups that they have nothing in common with. It can be a straight guy who knows not one single gay person and yet supports their right to marriage. It can be a white guy who has not one single black friends but yet supports the their fight for civil rights and equality.
However, conservatism tends to be towards the group and people they belong in. Are not most racist right wing? Are not most most anti-feminist people right wing? Are not most people prejudice to other religions right wing? That last one applies to Christians here in the US or Muslims in the middle east.
chordonblueFeb 4, 2012
Ah! And did not the Christians also set fire to Rome? I think most Christians can see where this line of thinking is going. Not surprising in the least...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
FesteringStumpFeb 4, 2012
I very much doubt you are capable of "seeing where this line of thinking is going" when, instead of answering a claim about those with right-wing tendencies sharing other characteristics such as racist zenophobia, anti-feminism and homophobia, with evidence to the contrary you make an absurd attempt to identify liberalism with brutal dictatorship.
That's the kind of smear Nero himself could salute.
novantiiFeb 5, 2012
Being right-wing isn't about hating a race or gender, etc.
It's about realizing that some people are dumb and will never stop being dumb, and accepting that it's better in the long term to just trample them than to include them into your social environment and spread their misery to people you care about.
I'm not talking about "conservatives" or Bible-thumpers. I'm talking about real Right Wingers.
I graduated a member of 5 honors societies with a perfect GPA, scored within the 999th percentile on the Stanford-Binet IQ test (high genius), and most importantly, read several hours a day as a teenager while my peers just smoked pot and masturbated and watched cartoons.
Why do people who spend their lives on drugs, loitering in the streets in fetish outfits obsessed with some ridiculous need to be "recognized" think for a even a second that they deserve my help? Factually, they don't even deserve the air they breathe, because their lives center around petty bulls**t and they have no real dreams or a desire to help humanity themselves.
I'll help them when they need help doing something productive and intelligent which helps society at large. That's the Right Wing entry exam.
When they just come out with a monthly scheme to redirect tax money into a new fringe group, they can suck my wealthy genius dick.
There, you got a look into the mind of an overachieving right-winger. Not a "conservative", "neocon", or any of that newspeak. A right winger.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
