Great shots kinda makes me glad I now live in Canada.
But have to point out many of the places included do regularly have snow and ice, it's not all global warming related!
mjm6783Feb 10, 2012
The term Global Warming is not widely accepted due to the ease of misunderstanding the term. Climate change is preferable. Inclimate weather is also not to be confused with long term average global temperatures.
norman619Feb 10, 2012
No they switched to climate change when it was clear the globe wasn't actually warming anymore.
geejayeFeb 11, 2012
Well - the "they" was Bush. He changed it to climate change since it was a kinder, gentler term:
"Although Luntz later tried to distance himself from the Bush administration policy, it was his idea that administration communications reframe "global warming" as "climate change" since "climate change" was thought to sound less severe" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Luntz
jmcgowanFeb 11, 2012
Correct. I also find is amusing when people assume that all places will see a mean increase in temperature, but in fact when Greenland melts the salinity of the North Atlantic will change the ocean currents and cause Europe to go into a real big freeze.
ibdilbertFeb 12, 2012
This comment made me chuckle, and the fact you currently have 9 diggers proves their are a lot of ignorant people incapable of processing facts from fiction. If all the ice of Greenland melted away, the difference of the salinity of the water now and then would be immeasurable. I even read one article that said the oceans would rise 23 feet, how stupid are people, really?! LMAO
berobreoFeb 11, 2012
That is exactly what is happening
ibdilbertFeb 11, 2012
I think the denial is from the older generation who remembers the 60s and 70s when pollution was so bad most major cities in the US had visual clouds of smog over them. At the same time people feared the abnormally cold winters were caused from the pollution blocking the Sun. There were articles of "Global Cooling". Today we live fairly clean lives, and now we have Global Warming. The older generation was also taught to think for themselves, they are not easily brainwashed, even if the brainwashing is true. No wonder they doubt it! Global warming is real, ask the dinosaurs!
LifeCoachLinEFeb 11, 2012
As a member of the older generation and the generation that started Green Peace ect and a Brit, I think you are partly right. We are not easily led. But we do not doubt climate change, it's happened many times in our planets history.
This is fact!
However i also recall England in the early 60's, 80's & mid 80's having tonnes of snow and frigid conditions. Perhaps it is because we have seen it before that we question some of the scare monguring.
The objection is to the misuse of facts.
Plus (and I wish I could remember where I read this! I think it was national geographic) it seems we are not the cause, as each of the planets in our solar system is heating up at exactly the same rate.
ibdilbertFeb 11, 2012
Well Said, + digg for you!
LifeCoachLinEFeb 11, 2012
Thank you
norman619Feb 11, 2012
They ignore the actual global temp trend because it goes against their core belief. Fact is for all their screams of CO2 warming the planet thanks to human activity but the planet's temp is actually trending down and has been for a while. For at least a century if I remember right.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Hey cool source... wikipedia (sarcasm)
elimgarakFeb 11, 2012
I agree - Wikipedia is pretty awesome. One neat feature that you apparently are not aware of is that each article provides original sources for the data. For example:
http://www.grida.no/publications/other/ipcc_tar/?src=/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/fig2-20.htm
http://www.grida.no/publications/other/ipcc_tar/?src=/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/fig2-21.htm
Here is a separate source that shows temperatures fo the last 130 years: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/service/global/global-land-ocean-mntp-anom/201001-201012.gif
And here is yet another one: http://seaice.apl.washington.edu/Papers/JonesEtal99-SAT150.pdf

I agree with you, Fox news is not a good source. I don't remember ever citing Fox. Can you please give me the quote where I did? I would lump wikipedia in with Fox newsComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
elimgarakFeb 11, 2012
Some snow yes - but there is a difference between just snow and temperatures at -20-30 degrees F. I don't think Black and Mediterranean seas have frozen in at least several hundred years.
berobreoFeb 11, 2012
In fact it's been a very warm winter, until now...
dynamooFeb 10, 2012
These are great photos reflecting a serious spell of very bad weather in continental Europe. But the submitter is being disingenuous about "global warming". The issue is "climate change".. the human race's dicking around with the environment causes a CHANGE in weather patterns, not everything gets uniformly warmer. It is worth pointing out though that many of these same places suffered a major drought during the summer, and now are being hit with a very severe winter.
muffcakesFeb 11, 2012
Global warming is also accurate. A warmer globe will lead to some cooler regions.
dynamooFeb 11, 2012
Exactly, "Global Warming" is the overall observed trend.. at a time when perhaps we should be seeing global cooling due to the natural long-term temperature oscillations we would expect.
lunarparcelFeb 11, 2012
Folks who suggest that these freezing anomalies serve to debunk "global warming" theories demonstrate what I refer to as "bottom of the barrel" thinking.
It seems like a very appropriate name, but more to the point, consider a large barrel filled with water and chunks of ice floating on the surface. The "bottom of the barrel" thinkers are gauging the temperature of the water based on a very limited assessment of lower regions of the barrel.
The barrel is placed outdoors under a hot midday sun which quickly begins to increase the melting rate of the ice chunks on the surface. The "bottom of the barrel" thinkers are informed that the barrel overall is warming up. Just at about this time, the near freezing runoff of the melting ice begins to drift downward through the water and is beginning to affectively lower the temperature at the bottom of the barrel. The "bottom of the barrel" thinkers then perceive that this cooling pattern is in direct conflict with the concept of global warming, when in fact what they are failing to grasp is the complex interrelated dynamics of global weather patterns.
That's about the best I can do. To simplify it any more would require a handful of chalk and some cave walls.
flamesniperFeb 11, 2012
The submitter's an idiot. Warming = Localized weather patterns changing. Warming =/= localized weather patterns all warming.
kingkoopa456Feb 11, 2012
You know in canada we get hit with -40 windchill days very often...
LifeCoachLinEFeb 11, 2012
Indeed we do and yet we are still here
kingkoopa456Feb 12, 2012
like -18? really? light sweater weather?
mjm6783Feb 10, 2012
It's not widely known, but there were some computer simulations of the effects of rising ocean temperatures. One of the main impacts had to do with the currents in the North Atlantic essentially ceasing to function. This warming of the oceans could actually plunge Europe into Ice Age conditions, as counter intuitive as that may seem.
blydchyldFeb 11, 2012
Theres a great series of books about this called 'Science in the captial' by KS Robinson.
He summises that you would need a vast ammont of salt to restart the currents
shwaavayFeb 11, 2012
It's the Earth's thermostat. Temp goes up, ice caps melt, the north atlantic conveyor belt stops. temps go down, caps refreeze, cycle begins again.
Try to defeat it puny humans, you will fail.
bobosmitorFeb 10, 2012
It sure is colder then the usual winters they get there.
lbxac20Feb 11, 2012
The AO index is currently strongly negative allowing the jet stream to dip further south than normal and bringing the cold with it.

berobreoFeb 11, 2012
In fact it's not, it's a storm the winter has been really warn
analogkid1Feb 11, 2012
Once again for the dim-witted: Global warming is about EXTREMES of weather. It's not about the entire planet having tropical weather. Google it and educate yourselves. Watch the Discovery Channel. Open up a f**king book for christ sakes.
arliberaFeb 11, 2012
In New York, we're having an unbelievably warm and snow-free winter. I wonder if any of this has to do with the Atlantic current being disrupted.
lbxac20Feb 11, 2012
Its warm here and cold there because of the NAO index is positive while the AO index is negative. Normally both indexes tend to be in sync with each other but occasionally they diverge.
cavimikeFeb 11, 2012
ZOMG snow in WINTER???? STOP THE PRESSES!!!!
Plenty of areas around the world get along just fine with a healthy dose of snow every year. Europe will survive.
RareErrFeb 11, 2012
Is there a way to digg up the article for great pics, but digg down the submitter for disingenuous submission comment?
rgb86Feb 11, 2012
Only if you can manage to find another submission by a non-jackass user, but Digg *usually* prevents multiple subs of an identical link, unless there's some sort of glitch at the moment.
thrusthamsterFeb 11, 2012
These people are pussies, "far below zero"? In Norway, -20 degrees celsius is the norm, and we've had a warm winter with temperature fluctuating between 0 and -10 degrees celsius. Closing down Heathrow because of 16 centimeters of snow? The Norwegian pilots were probably sitting there yelling "Let's f**king go!" to the tower.
macliberalFeb 10, 2012
Of course the ignorant right wing will try to capitalize on this, but it proves the effects of climate change. Science has been proven correct once again.
lbxac20Feb 11, 2012
It neither proves or disproves climate change. This is simply an article with photographs and the cold weather in Europe is simply a manifestation of a strongly negative AO index.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rgb86Feb 11, 2012
The content of the article is not in question here, but rather the editorializing going on in the summary here on Digg, implying that a simple snowstorm is some how evidence against the fact of global warming.
lbxac20Feb 12, 2012
That was essentially the point of my comment. I merely took issue with the statement "it proves the effects of climate change". This is an unsupported assertion regardless of what one's viewpoint on global warming or climate change may be.
In this case the cold weather is clearly due to the AO index being negative in conjunction with a positive NAO index, yet there are dozens of comments here from people attempting to spin this story into evidence supporting their views on climate change.

hay people "Climate change" has been going on long before people found america.the earth axis has been moving back and forth for about 4 billion years, people has nothing to do with the climate.
swarthmorejackFeb 11, 2012
I was in school in the early 60's. One of the few things I remember from back then was the teacher explaining how the Earth's temperature is always changing and that there are 100, 1000, and 10000 year cycles that tend to repeat. That is one reason for change. We are also in a major period of solar activity right now, that is another reason for things being severe right now. Does man's activities have anything to do with this? Sure, a little. But this stuff has been going on long before we were around and will continue long after we are gone. As for the pictures of Germany, they are great shots. I have a bunch of them too from when I lived there back in the 80's. It was nothing unusual to go outside and chip a couple inches of ice off my car in the morning to go to work. In the 90's it was not so bad. Now it's back. Continuous climate change, that is the way of the Earth. If you don't want climate change go live on a space station.
rgb86Feb 12, 2012
The problem with your solar cycle theory, though, is that the hottest decade on record coincides with one of the lower segments of the solar cycles, not the higher ones, which should lead to a cooling effect.

swarthmorejackFeb 12, 2012
Read my post again. I did not say the solar maximum is the cause, I said it was one factor. The weather is severe in some areas, and incredibly mild in other areas. There are a lot of different, sometimes completing, reason for change. People love to hitch their horse to one absolute and point fingers and say that is the reason for this or that. There are no absolutes, except absolute zero.
