I've always hated the concept of an "IP Address" - we don't walk around in real life with large identity badges on us. IP's only serve to creepy third party companies that want to sell and track you without telling you - the definition of stalking!

No, but you do physically walk around, and if the authorities want to stop you or stalk you they certainly don't need you to be carrying ID to do it.

IP addresses are how the internet knows where to send the data you requested. With out an IP address, the rest of the world can not talk toyou, nor does the rest of the internet know whom you are addressing.
IP addresses are a basic component of the internet's structure, and if removed would just be replaced with something similar.
The problem is the recording of IP addresses, which is not nessicary in most cases.

A product that was simple to install, which on boot found the nearest reliable proxy, added you to the tor network, encrypted your traffic over the first hop and was intended to be used by everyone to keep them safe with virus and middle man checking. Would find a government agency pointing guns at your head in the middle of the night while your kids are screaming in the background.
Or so it is seeming to be these days.
