Seriously? They had code in v3 to prevent any one source from dominating the front page and they left this fundamental rule out of v4?
That was either a glaring oversight or an obvious sellout. I'm betting on the latter.

No they made it so a site has to be white listed before it can front page multiple times a day. imgur, youtube, wired etc are all white listed sites and could see the front page often. All of this other spam you're seeing from an RSS submission wouldn't have popped more than once.

I've got to say i've never seen so much wining... Digg users: things change, this was all meant to be an improvement, why do most people seem to conclude this is somehow selling out. Digg makes money of advertisement. They get most clicks or most views on advertisements when the there are a lot of users. To keep users and keep expanding, digg wants the site to be better. But v4 is NOT an upgrade, its quite the downgrade. What was once a fun site has turned into publishers spamming an RSS feed. Not to mention the site is just uglier as a whole...

The engineers at Digg have stated that it is NOT possible to go back to V3 because it's more than a cosmetic change - it is an infrastructural change. Those that are holding out for V3 to be rolled back are just waisting their time - it's just not going to happen.
The only thing you can do is wait for the changes to take affect and settle with whatever is loaded as the final version. I've moved on to reddit not because I love reddit but just because it provides what I want.
It's a bit like this - You've learn't to drive in an automatic car for the last few years, now you're being forced to try a manual (stick) car - either you have the patience to stick it out and learn how the new stuff works or you just go. I've gone.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I find it hard to believe a tech company like Digg doesn't back up their infrastructure. Which from your response I'm assuming they don't which is which speaks volumes of Digg's poor protocol and procedures.
I've had friends in IT and Software Development where backup was crucial to company policy. A friend of mine was actually let go because he forgot to backup one day's worth of data at the place he was working at the time... It was also the same day the system crashed and important transactions and records were lost in the process, thousands of dollars were lost as well as man hours rebuilding a days worth of data and playing catch up.

There is nothing wrong with auto-submitting. Publishers should have the option to submit their own content to Digg. If I were a publisher I wouldn't want someone reposting my content on a blog and then having it hit the Digg Frontpage, and as a Digg user I'd rather get my news from the source than from power users.

Dude have you been living under a rock all this time? The auto-submitt feature is what is killing Digg. Publishers like Mashable, BBC and Engadget are auto-publishing a ton of crap that may or may not be interesting. They are ultimately holding a monopoly over the front page. Because of these larger publishers or corporations, independent sources (the random, quirky and out-of-the-blue publishers) never make it to the front page. This is the fundamental problem. Digg V4 is one large RSS, so why should anyone bother coming on Digg when you can load up Google Reader?
Granted Front Page news was influenced by power users in V3, but everyone had some influence over what got to the front page as well, as a result there was more interaction and the comment section was always loaded.
V4 algorithm, no matter what they do to it will never work like V3 unless the auto-submitt feature is discarded.

Quite a few people have probably already figured out how to auto submit to digg in V3 placing a disadvantage to everyone else. I'm all against robot publishers running the show but you have to verify yourself as the source of your blog to even get auto submitting to work. More content will filter into digg because of auto submitting but that doesn't mean you have to digg it up and have it make the front page. If thats what is happening then blame the community. Digg is buggy as hell right now and I'm surprised they dropped V3 so quickly before getting thorough feedback.

The auto RSS feature takes away the friction from publishing content. I never used to submit stories for that reason, too many hoops to jump through. Better to pipe the content in there (eg. Twitter) and let the community decide what is and isn't quality.

Because the stories that were submitted on v3 STILL CAME FROM THE SAME PLACES. The only difference is that now we get to see MORE stories from content providers, and if we want to see content that isn't from a major provider we just have to look for articles submitted by Diggers.

While the auto-submit through RSS thing is in fact an RSS feed because, well, it's an RSS feed, it doesn't change the way that stories get to the front page. People (even if the amount of people is still stabilizing) have to digg those stories for them to go anywhere. It's no different than one power user submitting every story from Cracked, and another every Ars Technica article. It's more democratic really, because it's based solely on the content instead of the clout associated with that user. People follow publishers they LIKE, so naturally they'll digg something they LIKE from that publisher. Big sites have more followers just like they have more visitors, so those big sites have their content more exposed just like the other sites.
Just because a story is from a big site doesn't mean it's bad, and just because a story is from a small site doesn't mean it's good.

Digg has a moderation system that looks for suspicious comments. The key to not getting your comments deleted that fast is to simply not use the word "digg" in your comment. Especially "digg sucks" "digg v4" or any words like that that could raise a red flag. We did some tests and noticed that with the same comments, if you replace DIGG with |)1GG or DlGG (L instead of I) it will stay on for a lot longer... sometimes going undetected.

Well, let's put it this way...if they went to the v4 to appease sponsors, and most of the diggers move to Reddit, or other social news website....who's going to click the links? Appease the users FIRST, or else there won't be any users to appease the sponsors.
Personally, I only peek in occasionally now, as this v4 sucks, and I keep hoping that someone in administration has a few braincells left...

We're getting it one piece at a time I think. First we got thumbs back, then stupid fixes for things they never should've broken, then the return of upcoming, then more power to the power users (I never thought I'd promote this as a good thing, but I'll take them over corporations any day. By putting them at the top of recommended lists, they'll have more power than ever).
Soon enough, auto-imported stories will have their importance toned down until they reach irrelevance.
Just leaving for a week or two and coming back is a good idea. Gets the point across, and gets you more usability.

I think the best way to fix the power-user / corporations issue is to keep track of the money. It's going to be difficult to figure out who makes money from stories getting to the frontpage. But if that information is displayed for the people you follow, users will take that into account and stop complaining about Digg and the focus will shift to the users being followed to be open about their revenues.

Get rid of autosubmit. Bring back buries. Bring back being able to report and block users. Stop letting month old stories reach the front page, wasn't the old limit something like 26 hours? Bring that back too. Also,bring back upcoming.

Can we get an option to make the digg logo in the top left take us to the top news? I follow 2 people, a IRL friend that doesn't' submit stories and Ron Paul back in the election who no longer submits and don't really want to start following people, I liked just having the front page be my entry point to digg. I constantly click the digg logo and then realize I have to click "Top News" to go where I want to go now.

I liked to be able to unclick topics I didn't want on my front page. Also, I unclicked videos since my work blocks all of them anyway. Now all those things are getting in the way.

Are you tracking each TIME that I bury it? Because every time I open the front page the same stories reappear. This is especially true with SPONSORED stories. Don't think me stupid enough to believe that is less than deliberate.

What about the ability to block a person? Even if people weren't making 50 posts of spam spam spam but 200 more spams it would still be nice to block people you don't want to read.
I think a lot of us are wondering why logical features that were on v3 weren't put on v4. Usually a new redesign expands on the features that were already on the site and gives more options to them, not completely take them away. I assume Digg kept reports on how often features were used, how could you all not see these were key things that people wanted?
The site right now, not even talking about the algorithm and publisher feeds, feels like a first attempt of an idea that has never been done. So many things are missing that should be here. It is a real disappointment, especially if this has been in the works for over a year.
And bugs bugs bugs bugs. It is laughable how many things screw up at random.

re: blocks - we did actually evaluate the usage of that feature, and, sadly, not many people used it. however, it's an important feature for those who knew about it and used it; I would love to see it back.
might sound empty to many, but we're working hard to do a few things: keep the site stable, evaluate which features we had in v3 that should be here in v4, and iterate on new features for v4. many of these efforts are happening in parallel right now and I hope you all will stick around (or come back).

I kinda digg the "top news from people you follow" section now that it's showing both the digg count and the number of friends that have dugg it. Not too shabby. Also, it doesn't look like the algo is entirely back on track yet, as I have yet to see an independent user hitting the top news...

Kevin claimed that the Reddit guys were in the Digg offices something like a week ago. There really doesn't seem to be any bitterness or ill-will there at all. He legitimately seemed to like them and what they're doing, and want them to get some sort of management better than Conde Nast.

1. Fix the digg app for iPhone. Did nobody realize that it would be rendered inactive when you went to digg v4?
2. Comment scores viewable from profile page. I used to love checking up on my prior comments to see digg up/down and comments. That system is badly broken ATM.

Timestamps: Will the "Made popular" time make a come back too? I liked that feature because it shows how stale the submission is, and also how popular it is (i.e. if two stories have 300 diggs but one was made popular faster, then the Digg rate must be higher and thus more popular amongst the users than the other one).

I like the look of the site but it could definitely be more user friendly so to speak. Auto submitted stories are a terrible idea.. defeats some of the spirit of community, that and the emphasis put on networking. I know that outsourcing audiences is the done thing these days but it still sucks balls imo

The algorithm is still broken in my eyes. Engadget is getting to the front page with like 80 diggs. Yesterday I saw some article getting to the front page with 24 diggs. Reddit OTOH is needing several hundred diggs to get to the front page. From the outside it still looks like there is a heavy bias toward sources who are paying for it or otherwise have connections at digg.
