"He said that despite acknowledging the abuse, he would never willingly forsake his priesthood. He said he had made his vows and he would “not break them.”
So f**king little kids doesn't break any vows?
Just execute this piece of s**t. People like this shouldn't be allowed to live.

It's truly ugly how he dismisses the abuse as "a little game", making it OK in his mind. But then again, look at the book of the faith. In the story of Lot escaping from Sodom and Gamorra. After Lots wife dies, and he has no sons to carry on his name, he f**ks his daughters and gets them pregnant. The story doesn't put a negative spin on that in any way. It seems to indicate that it was ok since he needed a son.
Sick s**t.
Ok, before the 'faithful' come forward and point out that the daughters got him drunk.. I'm a parent, and those of you with daughters, tell me, how drunk would you have to be to f**k your kids? There's no amount of alcohol.. Period. It's sick s**t.

The text says he was so drunk that he didn't even realize what was going on. It's clearly trying to distance him from any active participation in the act, because such incestuous relationships were eventually made against Israelite law once Israel came on the scene, so, despite the fact that incest for the sake of preserving a bloodline was a very widespread thing at the time, whoever wrote the story is clearly wanting to distance their beloved patriarch from it.
It seems you lack the cultural sensitivity to interpret ancient texts. Most people in the ancient world simply did not think that incest with sexually-mature relatives, even very close relatives, was "sick s**t." Taboos change, you know, just like how homosexuality was once seen as such "sick s**t" that it deserved death, and now most young people have no problem with it. Your taboos aren't universal, they aren't rooted in reason or human nature or anything like that, and they didn't exist in other times and places, even though, as I said, the Jewish tradition DID start trying to make incest taboo (and that cultural legacy may very well be the reason that you think it's taboo today).

Well put, and thoughtful. A nice change from the usual comments.
Now, as to your first paragraph. I agree that whoever wrote the text was trying to protect Lots memory to some degree. Firstly, being male, I can state from experience, that if a male is too drunk to know what's going on, he's not going to be able to achieve an erection, let alone complete the act. It's a safe bet to presume that Lot did indeed know what was going on.
And sure, in ancient times, such practice was probably accepted by primitive peoples. Although, I doubt your assumption that disdain for incest is not part of human nature. Aside from rare individual urges, the abnormalities often brought about by inbreeding would dissuade most thinking beings from the practice. There are exceptions, the ostrich people of the Vadoma tribe in south africa is an example.
What changes is education, general intelligence level, thinking and reason overriding instinct. Apes will breed with offspring, they are driven by instinct and lack the intelligence to reason, which leads to morality. It comes down to what is morally right, and what is wrong. As humanity moves forward and our capacity for intelligence grows, we are more capable of overriding our primitive animal instincts.
I do indeed understand the cultural difference between these modern times and those ancient times. Most mythologies were penned in ancient times that modern society would view as 'backwards'. That modern religious people depend on these texts to guide their own morality is a disturbing reality. Fortunately, humanity is slowly letting go of these religions.
This Bishop lives in modern times. The worlds human population is more greatly educated and capable of moral thinking. There is no defense for his acts.

I think you're missing my bigger point that basically nobody depends on the story of Lot and his daughters to construct an ethics of sex. The story is simply presented as "what happened," and the author is apparently embarrassed by what happened, so the event is not getting held up as some kind of model for behavior. To try to connect the bishop's actions to the teachings of the Old Testament is misguided because the OT's explicit statements about incest are against it, not in favor of it, and every Christian commentary I've ever heard about the story highlights the shame of the event (just using the "drunkenness" excuse to shift blame from the patriarch to his daughters). There is no defense of the way the bishop has acted, true, but I also don't think anybody's trying to find one in the story of Lot.

I don't disagree with you here. The reference was relevant to the subject. We are commenting on an event around a priest. A man who should base his life upon the teachings of this particular religious text. That particular story stands out in a way when talking about morality in the context of religion.
And indeed tying the bishops actions into the teachings of the OT, being that the majority of those teachings are strongly against the act, shows the criminality of his actions.
He's scum. He should be booted out of the order and added to the Belgian equivalent of a sexual predator list.

olmerta. people complain about rappers and their "stop snitchin'" crap but what about the clergy, and the police?
sexyteenagerApr 17, 2011
Typical pedophile bulls**t ..... typical rapist bulls**t actually ..... blame the victim by saying they wanted it.
There should be much more severe punishments for these crimes.
laurahoustonApr 17, 2011
pedophiles don't limit themselves to just 2 children, they have their age bracket, they start their 'games' to groom the kids for the objective.
The 2 kids are now 40 year old adults. How many 100s of 5 year olds had moments alone with this man over his lifetime?
One of the first sunday school questions is , where is God? answer- God is everywhere.
pedophiles are everywhere too.

The sad thing is that until recently the Cathoholic church has been able to sweep this crud under the carpet. So the people in the Church simply don't understand that people don't want their children being molested by priests, don't want the priests who have abused children reaping the benefits of their tide, nor do they want to see their church sheltering the pedophile priest.
Yet the Cathoholic church refuses to admit any wrong doings and hides their own dogma to keep the real scope of the problem hidden.

It's like our U.S. government letting Wall Street bankers off easy by refusing to prosecute AND also bailing them out.
When the Church and its pedophile priests are part of the establishment and they have so much power, they try to hide these abuses and go easy on their own ranks by refusing to prosecute - and they also bail them out with cushy retirements and reassignments.
We need true separation of state and religion.
